Visiting Costa Rica.......2007-03-14
A good read when visiting the country. I enjoyed/understood the stories much more when I visited Costa Rica and therefore the context in which they were written albeit that many of the stories were written in the earier part of the 20th century. Short stories were a good idea when travelling around
Open up the country............2004-02-24
The two most invaluable books I read prior to vactioning in Costa Rica were this one, and a social history with magnificent photos called, "Costa Rica: The Last Country the Gods Made."
The funny thing is that they compliment each other almost exactly in their selection of the geographical areas in Costa Rica that they both chose to explore; so you can read the essay, "Travels from the Interior" in "Last Country" then read the corresponding short story set in the highlands of the central plateau in "Literary Companion"!
I read both books alternating back and forth like that....talk about opening up the country before your eyes!
A Fleeting Impression.......2001-10-10
BEFORE TRAVELLING overseas, I always try and read some literature from the places I'm visiting, so I certainly applaud the spirit of the "Traveler's Literary Companion" series. As there doesn't seem to be much in the way of Costa Rican literature available in translation, this anthology is invaluable. However, I'm afraid I didn't find it as illuminating as the reviewers below. While the idea of grouping the 26 short stories by geographical region sounds like a good idea, in practice, I didn't find regional differences embodied in the stories to be distinctive enough to warant such arrangement. Perhaps a better grouping would have been coastal, inland, mountainous, and urban, I'm not sure. Another possible reason I might not have found the selections very evocative is their length. There are 26 stories by 20 authors (six have two stories in the collection) over 220 pages, so one gets more a sense of vignettes with fleeting impressions than a solid sense of what the people or places are like. The one aspect that does appear in the many of the stories is the importance of nature in Costa Rica, both as a source of beauty and as something to struggle against.
Don't leave home without it.......2000-03-15
A fascinating variety of styles and topics. We especially enjoyed the way the stories are arranged, by region. Sleepy, pick a short story. If you wonder what it might be like to labor with a machete or to live in a small house in the jungle. If you want to know what it might be like to be the only white girl, or the only brown boy. Read this. This book will change the way you see the uniformed schoolchildren, the mysterious round rocks, the lizards... There is more to Costa Rica than identifying birds and eating mangoes.

This small compilation of short stories was a priceless companion on my trip to Costa Rica. The philosophy of the "Traveler's Literary Companion" series is terrific: one of the best ways to really understand a country and its culture is through that country's literature. I highly recommend this book for anyone planning a trip to Costa Rica, or just curious about this glorious and inviting place. ¡Pura Vida y Tuanis!

At the turn of the last century, the Arts and Crafts movement transformed not only how objects looked but also how people looked at objects. It provided a framework for essential issues that are still debated today: the conflict between standardization and individuality, the question of whether a one-of-a-kind handcrafted object is superior to a mass-produced one, and the problem of defining what kind of design most benefits society.
As the most industrialized country, Britain was also the first to generate a movement to counter what was seen as the malevolent effects of mass production. Protagonists such as John Ruskin and William Morris championed "joy in labor"—the moral and spiritual uplift that would come with the revival of making objects by hand. The improvement of working conditions, integration of art into everyday life, and an "honest" aesthetic resulting from the use of indigenous materials and native traditions were also central to the movement's philosophy. At the end of the nineteenth century, these Arts and Crafts ideals were appropriated and adapted by the young avant-garde throughout Europe and the United States.

An Excellent Exhibition Catalog .......2007-03-30
Though seeing an exhibition via a catalog is not ideal, the photographs in Kaplan's will not leave you with a second-best taste in your mouth, for they beautifully capture the items in the exhibition. As for the text-- As reviewer Slake has accurately conveyed what is covered, I'll just add that it is worth every dollar you'll pay for it. I was astonished by how much I hadn't known about the Arts and Crafts' movement. (Incidentally, the high-quality paperback is identical in everything but the use of &s in place of "and's" in the title.)
What a fascinating book!.......2005-07-06
This is an exhibition catalog and ... I actually read it! Most catalogs are useful only for the pictures, but this one is a fascinating read about the emergence of the arts and crafts movement in England in the nineteenth century and its spread to the countries in Europe and the United States. It's organized by country, and focuses on the social context in each one, particularly how each country's artists and commentators modified the original Ruskin/Morris ideas to meet their own needs and respond to the salient issues in their own societies. Very well done, and lots of beautiful pictures of arts and crafts objects, too.

This book touches on why we have and love our dogs. It was a page-turner for me. Any dog owner can relate to the reasons for owning pets and their special bonds with us. I found it a good book to add to my dog book collection.

David Spain's new book, Art Deco Noritake & More, is filled to the brim with stunning photographs that bring to life more of the work of the artisans of Noritake...to savor slowly and deliciously. WOW!
In addition, to my delight, Spain has written a fascinating history of Noritake, highlighted with rare, early 20th century photographs..most never before published. I loved seeing the founders, the artists, the workers and their workplaces, the people of Noritake who created the magnificent porcelain fancyware and dinnerware avidly sought by today's collectors.
Spain's easy to master, revolutionary system for numbering Noritake backstamps is still a gem. Best of all, he's added more backstamps to the collection and has included documentation for some previously only thought to have been used by the Noritake Company.
New or old to Noritake collecting, or just looking for a gorgeous coffee table book or a special gift, you'll love this one.

This book adds more than 750 color photos to the record of materials on Noritake collectibles presented in Spain's 1997 book on this subject-a work with more than 1,200 color photos. This book, like the previous one, is comprehensive. It covers non-dinnerware porcelains made by the Noritake Company between about 1908 and the 1970s. The emphasis, however, is on the 1920s and works with Art Deco characteristics. The backstamp materials have been expanded, updated, and made very user-friendly. This amazing "Book 2" companion to David Spain's "Noritake Collectibles, A to Z : A Pictorial Record & Guide to Values" is truly a great piece of work. As if the first book were not stunning and wonderful enough, with it's easy, breezy organization and thoroughly impressive pictures numbering over 1000, this second one wows audiences yet again with it's amazingly clever organization and truly beautiful pictures, many taken (as in the first book) by the author himself. Quite the icing on the cake. Spain's writing genius shines through.

I have been a semi-professional gardener for 25 years and this is one of the best plant and flower guides you can buy. This book has all the features a beginner or accomplished gardener can ask for -- concise information, a photo of every listed plant, compact size, well organized, very reasonable price, and a large, varied selection. I own many gardening books but this is the first I turn to when I'm looking for plant information.

Good, but not as intended.......2004-06-18
The real strength of this book is its profuse illustration. Every flower is shown in a good-sized photo, and there are hundreds of them. That makes the book useful as a visual reference for someone drawing or painting, giving plenty of color and variety.
As a gardening guide, though, I'm not sure how successful it is. The descriptions of each plant and its culture are very brief, possibly too brief to ensure good understanding of the plant and its needs.
Working Person's Gardner.......2000-06-28
Finally, a book small enough to carry out to the garden with me for reference yet compact with enough information to enable me to find answers to my basic questions regarding best locations, season, size, appearance, care, possible difficulties, etc. I found the illustrated key next to each written description and picture of each plant to be extremely helpful and time saving for quick reference as to whether or not I want a plant based on its's being suitable for the location I want and the purpose intended for the blooms. All I have to do is flip open the book to the desired page, glance at the illustrated key symbols, slide my eyes over to the colored photograph of the actual plant and I know in less than 10 seconds if the plant may be suitable for my needs. I can then read the clarifying information and firm up my choice. The photography is very clear and the write-ups simple enough for a beginning gardener, such as myself, to understand.

A valuable reference source for Zarathushtrian rituals........2004-02-20
Zarathushtrians the world over are once more provided with a massive volume, this time edited by Dr. Michael Stausberg, his other two voluminous publications being, "Faszination Zarathushtra" (Walter de Gruyter, 1998) and "Die Religion Zarathushtras" (W. Kohlhammer, 2002). This book is the outcome of a proceedings of the international symposium "Zoroastrian Rituals in Context" held at the Internationales Wissenschaftsforum Heidelberg, from April 10-13, 2002. The book is a collection of papers by a majority of the greatest scholars in the field of Zarathushtrian studies, and in particular Zarathushtrian rituals and liturgical ceremonies. From setting the definitions of rituals and initiations in religious, geographical, historical and social contexts, nearly every minor and major Zarathushtrian ritual and liturgical ceremony is discussed and debated at some length. Thus this book serves to provide a valuable reference source for Zarathushtrian rituals, both for the novice and advanced students of Zarathushtrianism and I recommend this book most heartily to every Parsi and Zarathushtrian for a careful study of these papers. As usual the publishing house of Brill has to be thanked profusely for publishing for us in excellent style and format a valuable book on Zarathushtrianism in one of it's excellent monographic series.

I Paid $14.95 for THAT?.......1999-12-13
My first reaction when I opened my box from Amazon.com and pulled out this book was, "I paid $14.95 for THAT? " This isn't a book. It's a booklet. We're talking 8 pieces of paper (one of which is the cover, on colored paper) folded in half and held together with 3 staples.
The information it contains is mostly okay, although rather superficial. The best part was the section with tips on how to do a performance. It offered good, intelligent advice, and that's why I decided it deserved more than one star.
In the section describing how to do some intermediate-level dance moves, the descriptions were okay, and the illustrations were appropriate, but I found myself thinking, "Wouldn't most people rather learn how to do movements from a video instead of from the printed word?"
I found it peculiar that the "culture lesson" section of the book focused on Saudi Arabia--a place where belly dancing is not performed in public AT ALL. It would have been much better if the author had written about either Egypt, Lebanon, or Turkey instead, where women actually DO perform this art form in public.
