Fantastic!.......2006-01-02

This is indeed a fantastic little book. It contains all the colloquial Italian you could need for a short visit or even a long stay in Italy. I just returned from a langauge school in Rome and I wish I had this book with me. It's Italian as the natives speak it - not as they teach you in school. I found a lot of phrases I had to discover on my own from Italian friends.

One warning - If you are a complete beginner, this book does not contain pronunciation guides for the words/phrases. You'll want to supplement this with a beginning Italian text that includes basic pronunciation. Otherwise, this book is a dream!

What They Can't Teach You in School..........2005-12-13

A graphic artists'MUST HAVE reference........2000-09-03

There have been many great graphic artists in the past several decades. In my opinion, The Stenberg Brothers produced some of the finest graphical works of art in this Century. The Stenberg Brothers lived and produced their Art in 1920's...and 1930's. Fueling the Soviet propaganda machine. Look beyond the thorns of the Soviet era propaganda machine. If you are a true graphic artist, you will definately appreciate the fantastic talents of the Stenberg Brothers and Soviet-era art. The Stenbergs were Masters of the Graphic Arts. This book should not be listed as a "book". Rather, it should be listed as an artists' portfolio. This "portfolio" of Soviet artwork is a MUST for everyone with an interest in appreciating the graphic arts. The Stenberg Brothers were truly MASTERS of their medium. This BOOK is packed FULL of high quality, premium-paper-stock reproductions of the best works these brothers have ever produced. I recommend it wholley!

A great look at early Soviet-era poster design.......1999-09-23

While mostly confined to the movie posters that the Stenberg Brothers produced in the early years of the Soviet Union, this book still includes enough general history to help the reader view them in the context in which they were produced. Well-illustrated (most illustrations are in full color) with easy to comprehend text, this would be a valuable volume for anyone interested in graphic design. It will also appeal to students of the Constructivist movement.

This fascinating reappraisal of the relationship of women and the scientific enterprise focuses on the efforts of Protestant women science faculty at Mount Holyoke College to advance themselves and their institution from its founding as an evangelical Protestant seminary for women by Mary Lyon in 1837 to the present. Contrary to most history-of-science interpretations of women's professional experience, Levin suggests that in several important ways New England Protestant culture -- and the zeal of women faculty at a college established to train female missionaries -- created a learning environment that enabled science faculty to establish and maintain a niche for themselves and to contribute to the development of scientific enterprise, particularly during Mount Holyoke's first hundred years.

Levin's study reflects the paradigm shift in writing about science inspired by the publication of Thomas Kuhn's book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962), which transformed the history of science from its exclusive focus on scientific discoveries about how nature operates to a field that pays much more attention to the social roots of scientific discoveries. Historians of science now routinely consider both "external" as well as "internal" developments in the co-production of science.

Levin examines science at Mount Holyoke College in four critical "externalist" dimensions: religion, gender, geography, and pedagogy. She shows how the unique blending of a religious and female calling took place in a particular geographical setting -- a relatively isolated college town in New England. She also shows how new ideas about "doing science" became translated into new ways of teaching science and how pedagogy and scientific discoveries are mutually interactive.

Ultimately, Levin presents an intriguing case study of an alternative way of doing science -- college-based, women-based, religion-based, teaching-based -- one wholly different from the "rise of the research university" model that has become the basis for the history of academic science in the United States. In Levin's book, Mount Holyoke itself becomes an experiment that raises a basic question: Is there another way to do science?

Sixty years ago, at the height of World War II, an extraordinary series of gatherings took place at Mount Holyoke College in western Massachusetts. During the summers of 1942-1944, leading European ?gures in the arts and sciences met at the college with their American counterparts for urgent conversations about the future of human civilization in a precarious world.

Two Sorbonne professors, the distinguished medievalist Gustave Cohen and the existentialist philosopher Jean Wahl, organized these "Pontigny" sessions, named after an abbey in Burgundy where similar symposia had been held in the decades before the war. Among the participants—many of whom were Jewish or had Jewish backgrounds—were the philosophers Hannah Arendt and Rachel Bespaloff, the poets Marianne Moore and Wallace Stevens, the anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss and the linguist Roman Jakobson, and the painters Marc Chagall and Robert Motherwell.

In this collection of original essays, Stanley Cavell and Jacques Derrida lead an international group of scholars—including Jed Perl, Mary Ann Caws, Jeffrey Mehlman, and Elisabeth Young-Bruehl—in assessing the lasting impact and contemporary signi?cance of Pontigny-en- Amérique. Rachel Bespaloff, a tragic ?gure who wrote a major work on the Iliad, is restored to her rightful place beside Arendt and Simone Weil. Anyone interested in the "intellectual resistance" of Francophone intellectuals and artists, and the inspiring support from such American ?gures as Stevens and Moore, will want to read this pioneering work of scholarship and historical re-creation.

The College was founded as a female seminary in 1837 by Mary Lyon, who was one of the first to voice belief that women were capable of higher education as much as men were. Our founder still has pride of place in campus life: her resting place (never mind whether shes really buried there or not) lies in an enclosed hilly area near the center of campus, where students must pass daily on their way to and from class. And that about sums up how much influence the past has on the present here: a great amount. The College is no longer a seminary, nor does it have any religious affiliation, but we take our traditions seriouslyfrom the revived May Pageants to gracious dinners on Mary Lyons birthday that feature a cake in her honor. The women of Mount Holyoke today feel a strong connection to Mount Holyoke women of the past, and it shows. First of all, we keep coming back! Reunions, held every year in the spring, are packed with women who don their class colors yet again (despite perhaps having gray hair and a child or two in tow), and proudly march in the alumnae parade in front of the newest graduating class. Its a once-in-a-lifetime experience, marching with your class between rows of alumnae cheering you on, on to Mary Lyons grave where you and your fellow seniors sing Bread and Roses, an old suffragette song, before placing the laurel chain youve been carrying throughout the parade on the fence around the grave.

Of course, like everyone, were a part of the modern world, too. Those in charge of campus life try hard to keep architecture and technology up-to-date without removing the over-a-hundred-years-old charm Mount Holyoke possesses. The social atmosphere on campus is definitely more liberal in character than it was in the beginningbut no, were not all lesbians either. In general, this is a serious school, a dry campus, and not the place youd seek out for a party on a Friday night (thats not to say we never have parties, though). Were serious about our academics, and were serious about learning how to make a difference in the world. Were also especially good at creating a sense of communitya sisterhood, really. South Hadley definitely isnt the most exciting place to live, but life here is what you make of it, minus a few easy entertainment options. If you really want a party or a night out, go to Amherst or Northampton. But when youre ready to go home, Mount Holyoke will be there for you.
