5 out of 5 stars Best First Visit to Costa Rica Book.......2007-05-17

My husband and I were going to Costa Rica for our honeymoon so, wanting to research it thoroughly, I bought 6 different C.R. travel books. I bought this one last and wish I had bought it first. It was the book I kept going back to. It also had the most useful maps of any of the C.R. books I saw. We wanted to stay at a mix of regularly priced places ($100+/night) along with the occasional splurge of $200+/night places. We also wanted to stay at enviromentally-friendly places as much as posible. This book got the job done.

CR for Dummies is the best intro/overview book. I would also recommend buying The New Key to Costa Rica because it has more detailed information about accomodations for all budget types and lots of additional info on activities and tours that you won't find in Dummies.

        Book Description

In this new and masterful synthesis, Wasserman shows the link between ordinary men and women-preoccupied with the demands of feeding, clothing, and providing shelter-and the elites' desire for a stable political order and an expanding economy.

The three key figures of nineteenth-century Mexico-Antonio López de Santa Ana, Benito Juárez, and Porfirio Díaz-are engagingly reinterpreted. But the emphasis in this book is on the struggle of the common people to retain control over their everyday lives. Concerns central to village life were the appointment of police officials, imposition of taxes on Indians, the trustworthiness of local priests, and changes inland ownership. Communities often followed their leaders into one political camp or another-and even into war-out of loyalty.

Excesses in partisan politics and regional antagonisms gave rise to nearly eighty years of war, resulting in the nation's economic stagnation between 1821 and 1880 and the mass migration of women from the countryside to the city. The industrialization of urban employment forever altered gender relations. During wartime, women acted as the supply, transportation, and medical corps of the Mexican armies. Moreover, with greater frequency than has been known, women fought as soldiers in the nineteenth century. This account of Mexico from Independence to the Revolution combines lively explanations of social history, political and economic change, and gender relations. Wasserman offers a well-written, thoughtful, and original history of Mexico's nineteenth century that will appeal to students and specialists alike.

"At long last, a clear-headed, non-romanticized, and non-adversarial analysis of everyday life and politics across the vast sweep of a century of change and rebirth. This is a first-rate book, expert and highly accessible."—Professor Timothy E. Anna, University of Manitoba

This account of the history of Mexico from Independence to the Revolution traces the struggle of common people to exert control over their everyday lives.

5 out of 5 stars Making Sense of "Los Años Olvidados".......2004-04-02

For all its historical riches, the nineteenth century, particularly the first half, is a period in Mexican history neglected by historians for far too long. Almost forty years ago, Nettie Lee Benson lamented the lacunae when she stated that much was yet to be learned about what actually happened during the period between 1810-1857. Fifteen years ago the refrain was much the same when Eric Van Young called this early national period a "hueco." Four years later, Josefina Zoraida Vázquez focused on the lack of attention to nineteenth century Mexico when she characterized this period the "forgotten years." As late as eight years ago, Professor Vázquez exhorted the historical community to apply social and economic histories to clarify who the actors were and what role they played in the political life of nineteenth-century Mexico instead of shrouding the political realities behind the themes of foreign aggressors and pronunciamentos.

It would be misleading, however, to interpret the introductory paragraph on this review as characterizing a complete void in historical studies of the period in question-much has been done in the last forty years. Seemingly as a response to Professor Vázquez, Mark Wasserman, whose book is the subject of this review, masterfully synthesized a suite of extant historical works-books and articles-which previously had to be consulted collectively to order and place in perspective this neglected period of Mexican history known erroneously for its chaos and disorder.

Everyday Life and Politics in Nineteenth Century Mexico demarcates the nineteenth century into three periods, from the formation of the nation-state until the disastrous war with the United States; Guadalupe Hidalgo through the internecine wars of the Reform ending in the triumph of Liberalism and the Tuxtepec Revolution; and the Profiriato until the dawn of the Mexican Revolution. Wasserman introduces each period with a biographical sketch of the leading figure of the period, in this case being Antonio López de Santa Anna, Benito Juárez and Porfirio Díaz. Additionally, the author provides a brief but useful timeline that orders the period in question.

The overarching theme that the author provides for nineteenth-century Mexico is that it was a time of pervasive wars, the most disastrous one for Mexico being the war with the United States followed by the Reform civil wars. And it is this constant warfare that resulted in the nation's economic stagnation and hence inability to develop fully. Furthermore, this constant warfare reverberated in the social space by creating demographic shifts, particularly of women. War and the resulting migrations also irrevocably altered gender relations as women fought wars with greater frequency than had been thought, and migrated to industrialized urban centers and became workers.

This book is clearly meant for the introductory survey level, hence its limited bibliography and lack of footnotes. While the bibliography is limited, many more studies were consulted in constructing this synthesis as evidenced by the acknowledgement section of the book and the footnoted acknowledgements at the beginning of each chapter.

Everyday Life and Politics in Nineteenth Century Mexico provides a much needed synthesis of nineteenth-century Mexico with an excellent balance of political economy, social and gender history that will surely become the de rigueur introductory survey for students of Mexican history in general and nineteenth-century Mexican history in particular.

            Book Description

In this original study of the transformation of late nineteenth-century Stockholm into a flourishing industrial capital, Allan Pred reconstructs the development of Stockholm's local economy, civil society and built environment through an interpretation of lost elements of language, of forgotten fragments of daily discourse, of lost words and meanings that belonged to members of the working and periodically employed classes. Pred demonstrates how the emergence of industrial capitalism in Stockholm and the onslaught of modernization were not simply imposed upon the local arena; instead they were given their own distinctive local identity and meaning.

2 out of 5 stars Selling Bucky short / Bucky for dummies.......2006-08-12

Buckminster Fuller was undoubtedly an interesting man with many interesting ideas, indeed some extremely interesting ideas. Unfortunately this book, which is much more a picture album than a thoughtful book, is so perfunctory that I gained few, if any, insights into Fuller's thinking.

5 out of 5 stars Exploring Buckyýs Archive is always a treat........2000-10-02

Because Bucky did his best to get his message out to as many people as possible, at a cost of $65 I am sure that this is not the type of book he would wanted to see produced. It seems like the book could have been printed in a less costly form and many of the graphics which were clearly just taken from video eliminated so that the material could be made available to more people at a lower price.

That said, I thoroughly enjoyed the glorious visual aspect of this book. In my years spent researching my book "Buckminster Fuller's Universe" and working on other Fuller writing, I had not seen some of the photographs and illustrations displayed here. This is a must have for any Bucky fan.

I don't recommend it as an introduction to the ideas and wisdom of Fuller because, as is true with almost all of Fuller's writing, the ideas need to be studied not read over once, and this book does not provide a complete enough picture to be a good study guide. Look to the writing of others for your introduction to Bucky, and look to this book to add to your understanding of a man who is recognized as one of the great thinkers, geniuses and Renaissance men of modern times.

5 out of 5 stars Superb - organization, production, and editing.......2000-07-26

"Your Private Sky" is a must-have book for Bucky fans. In addition to presenting a wealth of new material from Fuller's archives it also arranges and presents Bucky's life and works in an innovative format that emphasizes the larger view of his work and the natural progression of his thoughts. The authors have taken the time to do the re-search which allowed them to see the larger picture. This book about Bucky's life and inventions goes from the whole to the particular.

One example of the thoroughness of "Your Private Sky," compared to earlier books, is in it's handling of the Dymaxion house. This is the first book, I've seen, that includes drawings and photos of the initial square or rectangular 4D home. The authors have done a great job of ransacking Fuller's archives to find just the right images and words to convey the flow or progression of Bucky's designs. This was the first time I grasped how the work on the Dymaxion home designs was related to the latter invention of the Geodesic dome.

Most of the never-before-published photos, drawings and writings in "Your Private Sky" were found in Bucky's Chronofile, the 300-foot long series of personal history files that Bucky started collecting in 1915. Except for the short introduction and chronology at the beginning of the book, all the material in this 522 page book consists of items selected from Bucky's Chronofile. The words are selections from Bucky's writings.

The graphic design, printing and binding of "Your Private Sky" compliment the quality of its contents. The superior binding permits the pages to lie flat so you can view the hundreds of full bleed photographs including many two page spreads. The book's visual organization is excellent especially considering the variety of items and styles that had to be accommodated. My minor criticisms are that I would have liked to see more indexing and source information and a few less spelling and translation errors in this book.

A superb book; it's well organized, packed with never before seen photos and drawings, thoughtfully arranged and edited, and printed and bound using first class materials and methods.

5 out of 5 stars Your Private Sky.......2000-05-27

I was looking forward to receivinging this book .........The newly published book was just what I expected. It contains Bucky's whole life history and his various ideas that arised during his life such as the famous geodesic dome, dymaxion products, tensegrity, world game and so on. Many are what I have not obtained so far in detail from other literatures already published. So they are extremely usefull and fun to me. The most important thing that I could get from the book is that I could feel strong power to live the daily life again with fresh dreams.

Through several years and several Dobermans, this book has stood the test of time. I have reached for it on many occasions. If you are involved with Dobes, or even thinking about getting a Dobe, this book is a MUST READ! It is worth every penny and then some.

4 out of 5 stars Really Really HUGE book -- .......2006-01-06

                        This is a massively oversized hardcover, with glossy pictoral covers, 638 pp; My copy seemed a little bent out of shape for being so huge. Claims over 800 color and b/w photos, just about anything you'd want to know about Dobies; over 5 pounds of book, and prepare for projected expensive shipping costs (really, really BIG book) by the Queen of Judges, Mrs. Nicholas;

5 out of 5 stars Best Perennial Gardening and Design Book!.......2003-09-15

I have alot of gardening books and this one stands out as a winner that I highly recommend. It is a book for beginners as well as advanced seasoned gardeners. What I love the most and what made me buy this book is how he takes his 30+ years of gardening experience and distills his knowledge into very easy to learn principles.

He doesn't talk down to his readers or use terminology that is over the head of the average gardener. His tonge-in-cheek and witty comments shows that he is a normal gardener like the rest of us, making mistakes, buying the wrong plant and putting it in the wrong place but that's part of the fun of gardening, trial and error and seeing what works and what doesn't. A great book to curl up on a couch/hammock to read and dream how you're going to change your garden soon.

                              ...

5 out of 5 stars Helpful Information for Aspiring Gardening Artists.......2003-06-10

Upon receiving this book, I glanced through it to see what it had to offer. I was very pleasantly surprised.
What most excited me, as an experienced gardener who is ALWAYS looking to expand my knowledge, were the many suggestions and explanations for the non-trained gardening "artist" that would help one better understand the principles of design and the use of color.
The information on the author's suggested plants for an ever-blooming garden were explicit, yet concise, and would benefit the average gardener as well as the beginner.
Within 24 hours, I had read the book, highlighted it, and recommended it to several gardening friends. In addition, I spent the day moving many perennials in my large mixed border to achieve, what appeared to me to be, an overall improvement in the design of my perennial garden. I look forward to seeing the results of the changes I have made as the season progresses.
This book, I think, offers the gardener, who might be tentative in his/her design decisions, knowledge that allows one to improve upon one's overall plan with a better understanding of the design principles presented and how to use them most effectively.

                                    Book Description

Poet, polemicist, pagan, and pretender to the throne of Poland, Count Geoffrey Potocki de Montalk was one of the glittering generation of New Zealand poets of the 1930s. His career took a strange turn after he was imprisoned for obscene libel. Following a celebrated trial in London, he became increasingly eccentric, dressing in mock-medieval garb, claiming the throne of Poland, and issuing a stream of poetry and pamphlets, before returning to New Zealand in the 1980s and 1990s. This is the first time his full story has been told and it will be relevant to those interested in the literature of obscenity, the history of censorship, and private press publishing in the 20th century.

My response to this excellent biography/memoir about New Zealand born poet, polemicist, private printer, pagan and pretender to the Polish throne, Count Geoffrey Potocki de Montalk, by his cousin NZ poet Stephanie de Montalk, is best conveyed by excerpts from the two following reviews. Michael King, writing in The Dominion (NZ) 17 November 2001, said, 'Every once in a rare while, a subject and an author admirably suited to each other connect and the result is a book of outstanding interest and merit. Unqiet World is one such volume ...like many poets, she writes prose very well. This quality is yet another that lifts this book from the domain of biography into that of literature.' And Ruth Brown, writing in the Times Literary Supplement, 27 December 2002, observed: 'Stephanie de Montalk succeeds in bringing her implauible relative to plalusible life. His various exploits on a worldwide stage are set in a meticulously researched analysis of the context of their times, and in openly acknowledging a complex and shifting personal reslationship with her quarry, she charts the subjectivity that must go into the making of any biography.'
