Book Description
Taking a science-based look at an emerging area of medicine, Adaptive Biology and Medicine: New Frontiers, Volume 3 discusses the biology of adaptation at the molecular, cellular, and system levels in response to a variety of stressful conditions. Leading international experts present a total of 37 chapters that cover a common continuum of adaptations. For easy reading, the information has been grouped under the sub-headings: Cardiovasular Adaptation, Adaptations to Changes in Altitude and Microgravity, and Environmental Stresses. Examples of cross adaptations are included where repeated exposure to one stimulus may have applications in the treatment and prophylaxis of different diseases. Understanding disease and the mechanisms involved can help us fight disease. When you look at illness through the lens of adaptive biology you can sometimes see medical problems in a new and thought-provoking light. Offering promise for therapeutic strategies in both experimental and clinical pathology, Adaptive Biology and Medicine: New Frontiers explores a new way of thinking about physiological adaptations and their link to disease development.

Customer Reviews:
Really, a waste of paper.......2006-04-06
This tiny, outdated excerpt from the larger Fodors guide to Mexico is practically useless. You can read the whole sightseeing section on your coffeebreak. Too much time is spent on side-trip suggestions -- it's almost 1/3 of the book!

Customer Reviews:
A plus for beginning Reefers.......2001-06-17
Dr. Herbert Axelrod continues to pass on his aquatic prowess in this book for coral enthusiasts. Novice reefkeepers should definitely invest in this book as it is very easy to read and understand. Experienced reefkeepers would even profit from having this book in their aquatic library for reference at any time, as it is thorough in all the typically kept hard and soft corals. Each coral is given its own color-coded review for difficulty of keeping and put into one of three catagories, green for beginners, yellow for experienced keepers of corals, and red for those who consider themselves experts. On the whole this is a great reference for anyone who is considering keeping corals, either for the first time or continuing to keep them after years of experience.
Excellent photos!!!.......1999-03-25
Excellent photos and good guide for beginners in picking corals...Better than some kid at the local fish store!!!
outdated and misleading-forget about this one!.......1999-03-09
Somewhat disorganized and very misleading, due for the most part because its outdated. It categorizes as hard to keep most of the SPS corals that are common to the hobby today. The pictures aren't that great and I'm still searching for the "care & breeding" section that the book's title refers to.This book is truly a waste of money!
Customer Reviews:
Right choice for amateurs!.......2000-08-08
This book doesnt have the following information: How to feed a coral, how often and what to feed, what type of lightning to use and how many watts to use, what additives to add to the water and in what quantity. The book is very poor in pictures content, the pictures are all blurry and the colors are all faded out, doesnt have any info on how to treat a sick or infected coral. The levels of difficulty of each coral are not very well presented and identified, the author identifies each with a color, and the trouble is the colors are very poor in quality and are all faded, a yellow is almost like an orange which is very similar to a red, and its confusing sometimes.
In sum its a book for a beginer but not for the advance aquarist. If you are on a middle or higher level do not buy it.
An Excellent Guide to Corals For Your Reef tank.......2000-05-14
There are very few books on corals which are suitable for reef tanks... a lot of beginners rush and get species which never live...or are incompatible..! this book guides u pictorially as well as informatively...thru the pro's and con's of keeping corals..how to chose, maintain, as well as about water conditions and how to stock the tank. Particularly useful to me was the mention of water standards as well as light requirements and the proper identification of the right species which was Just the choice made for me and my tank ! A must for every Marine Aquarists Library..who really love their corals..and want them to live...and at the same time be envious of the selection...the choce and the healthy sustainment of the species in the tank. No wonder they say.."NEIGHBOURS ENVY..OWNERS PRIDE !" when it come to keeping live coral tanks..and this book is the right guide to help u through... With Axelrods vast experience and excellent Pictures I recommend it to each and every Reef Lover ! Please feel free to contact me at prateepks@yahoo.com

Book Description
High hills, rolling uplands, steep escarpments, swift-flowing streams, stately homes and humble dwellings draw visitors to the Cotswolds, one of Britain's most celebrated regions. Now it's your turn. The journey starts in the university town of Oxford, with its awe-inspiring medieval towers, and ends in the elegant resort city of Bath. Along the way, travel to the area's best-known sites, and also uncover its secret, secluded gems. From village to village, a visual harmony reigns, thanks to nature's gift of limestone, which brings honey-colored beauty to both the landscape and the architecture. From the overarching rainbow-filled sky in Belas Knap to the well-tended cottages of Bibury, it's a trip you'll never forget...and one you'll want to take often.

Very helpful both before our trip and after we arrived in England. The day to day calender allowed us to better plan and enjoy our time in the country. Can't wait to get the next book in the series.

From the supplier: Cotswald sheep are hardy animals and produce excellent wool and meat. They have a stronger natural survival instinct than many sheep breeds and will seek out shelter in storms. They are also easy to handle and are efficient eaters.
