Customer Reviews:
The Best (and most crowded) Parts of the Sierra.......2006-09-11
This guidebook really is worthy of the award it won. It describes over 60 hikes in the Sierras the bulk of which are long day hikes or backpack trips. Each route has a topographical map included, detailed descriptions and alternative routes or side trips included. What makes this guide fairly unique are the many (very beautiful) color plates and some wonderful sidebars on local history, including a discussion of arborglyphs left by Basque sheepherders and the fight by the climbing community to save "Camp 4" in Yosemite Valley.
Nonetheless, I cannot give the book 5 stars. There are several minor errors in the book. Arrowheads have not been found atop Mt. Whitney: that is an apocryphal story that dates back to Clarence King. Similarly, the claim that Mt. Rose is the only 10,000 ft. peak with a trail to the summit in the Tahoe area is untrue. The Tahoe Rim Trail goes right over the summit of Relay Peak and this even appears on their own map of the Mt. Rose hike. The main drawback of this book, however, is that it really only covers the popular backcountry hikes in the range. The book lists only 8 hikes in Sequoia and Kings Canyon and these are the premier hiking parks in California. So, while this book is good if you really have no idea of what is available in the Sierras, hikers with some foreknowledge, or those seeking solitude, will need to supplement this book with other sources.

Book Description
The Journal of Decorative and Propaganda Arts, founded in 1986 and now published by The Wolfsonian-Florida International University, explores themes relating to The Wolfsonian collection and to the visual language of objects. It conveys to readers the power of design and shows how design shapes and reflects human values and experience.
From 1875 to 1945, the arts and architecture flourished in Cuba. The passing of power from the old patrician class to the emerging middle class together with the emergence of the free enterprise system contributed to a vibrant exchange of ideas and opportunities between the island and the United States. When Cuba gained independence from Spain in 1899, its quest to achieve its own national identity, especially in the arts, took on a special poignancy. Cuban artists and architects initially looked to the distant colonial past as a way to begin a new expression of Cuban culture. Meanwhile, U.S. architects were designing an impressive range of Art Deco and Streamline Modern buildings in Havana. These thirteen essays on Cuban art and architecture are organized into four groups: 1875 to 1910, 1911 to 1930, painting, and 1931 to 1945.

Model 6000: "Limousine of the Air".......2007-05-31
The 1920s witnessed growing interest in air travel and "the businessman who flew was a new market for all airplane companies." At Travel Air a "sedan model," targeted "businessmen who needed fast, comfortable travel capability." It proved to be the "most successful and worthy of the Travel Air name." A high wing, semi-cantilever monoplane with a fully enclosed cabin, "the Model 6000 was billed as the `Limousine of the Air.'"(44-45)
The interior featured cabin heating and "roll-down automobile style windows." (48) While many Model 6000s served fledgling airlines, one unit was modified for the personal use of actor Wallace Berry. It incorporating plush velour seats, a couch for napping while in flight, and a lavatory with hot and cold running water and sported a larger, more powerful 420 hp Wasp engine which required a strengthened structure. Interior options alone cost Berry an additional $1000 and the total cost, at $20,000, was "the most expensive Travel Air ever built."(54) In comparison the price for a standard Model 6000-B with a 300hp Wright engine was $13,500. While significantly less than Berry's, even at this price it was unlikely to be in the range of the average owner/pilot seeking personal air transportation.
Aircraft manufacturers were able to use data from experiments conducted at McCook Field in Dayton, Ohio. There, in the 1920s, "many experiments with airfoils, drag reduction, engines, supercharging and turbo-charging, lubricants, fuels, propellers and armaments were being conducted."(14) While primarily for military purposes, some of these technological advancements diffused to the commercial sector. One company was Travel Air, Inc.
For a time, before he started his own company, Clyde Cessna worked for Travel Air. He was one of the organizers, contributed $5000 initially, served on the board as vice-president, and loaned wood working equipment to get the company going. Other notables with Travel Air were Walter H. Beech, secretary and Lloyd C. Stearman, chief engineer. In time Cessna, Beech, and Stearman would leave a legacy of aircraft monikers all their own, but before that they created Travel Air designs recognizable for their reliability, attractiveness, and style.
The company fell victim to a failing economy at the onset of the Great Depression and ceased to exist in 1932.

Reference bibliography.......2007-06-12
This is an essential bibliography as a reference to introducing students for the Plant Pathology science.
an excellent text.......2006-10-07
This is an excellent introduction to plant pathology and the kind of book one tends to hold onto to use as a reference after finishing their coursework. I have known plenty of graduate students who've held onto their copies, and I've really never heard any serious criticisms of this book. The coverage is broad, and it will serve as a useful, interesting and highly readable reference for those with interests in bacteriology, virology, mycology, botany and a variety of other fields that overlap with aspects of plant pathology. Typically when I rate textbooks I am fairly harsh because the cost is generally high while contents often leave much to be desired. In my opinion this book is an exception, and I think the cost reasonably reflects the value of the information contained.
Gold standard for general phytopathology. .......2006-08-04
I have been out of Phytopathology since the fall of 1971. Over the years I have; from time to time; skimmed journals like Mycologia and Phytopathology. So the old urge came back and I bought this text on the recommendation of a friend.
This is an excellent text book on general plant pathology. The scope is extensive and I was delighted that a goodly portion of the book explores host pathogen interactions with a microbiological slant. My late, learned, and very noble professor, Dr. R. K. Hegde would have been thrilled to no end considering that the book generally follows his outlines of PL-PATH 600. Dr. Hegde Sir, whereever you are, remember that seminar in May 1968 on the basidiomycetous Fungi with Dr. C.S.Holton in the audience and your passioned pleas for more biochem data? Well those questions are explored to some extent in this book.
If you have any interest in biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or plant science get this book. Most definitely a classic.
Best textbook on Plant Pathology.......2005-10-09
This is by far the best reference on the subject of Plant Pathology. It will be useful not only to plant pathologists, but to other plant scientists and biologists as well. George has done an excellent job in bringing his now famous textbook up to date. I have many books on Plant Pathology; this is by far the best. The fifth edition includes many new pictures and drawings to illustrate the concepts relating to diseases of plants. Plus many new sections dealing with the state-of-art of this science. George says this will probably be the last edition he will write. What a way to cap such an illustrious career!
A Classic Textbook.......2005-10-03
Agrios has upgraded and improved his classic Plant Pathology textbook. I own the 4th edition, and I was uncertain at first if I should buy the 5th edition. It was defintely worth it. Not only is there considerable new information, there are also many more helpful pictures and diagrams. Plus, many of the old graphics that appeared in black and white in the 4th edition are in color in the 5th edition. I highly recommend it.

Subtitled The World of Modern Dance, Jack Anderson's Art Without Boundaries traces the century-long history of modern dance, and argues that such dance owes its vitality to its embrace of cultural inflows. As you'd expect, based on his writing in the New York Times and Dancing Times, Anderson gives the impression of having been everywhere and seen everything. Even such seminal artists as Isadora Duncan and Ruth St. Denis benefit from the fresh angle, showing how African and even Asian influences changed their thinking. Though Anderson seems much less fascinated with the personalities of the 1990s than those of the 1920s and 1930s, the later years give him a chance to explore the global cross-pollination that led to Japanese Butoh and corresponding movements in Africa, Germany, Russia, the Netherlands, China, Spain, Australia, the Czech Republic, and elsewhere. Art Without Boundaries leaves you on the edge of what promises to be a fascinating new century of dance.
Book Description
Out of his long history as dance critic for the New York Times, Jack Anderson gives us this important, comprehensive history of one of the liveliest and most unpredictable of the arts. Treating modern dance as a self-renewing art, Anderson follows its changes over the decades and discusses the visionary choreographers who have devised new modes of movement. Art without Boundaries is a CHOICE Outstanding Academic Book for 1998.

Book Description
This biography of Australian parliamentarian Peter Andren tells the story of an intelligent and sensitive man who became a politician because he could see that the values he held and the people he cared for had been abandoned by the major parties. Andren's run as an independent and his capture of the federal seat of Calare in central-western New South Wales in 1996 is detailed. His third victory in 2001, which he secured with an amazing majority of the vote, is also discussed, as is how Andren accomplished all of this in a rural electorate, without the benefit of a party organization, and while holding views that are to the left of the Labor, Liberal, and National Parties.
