Customer Reviews:
Excellent travel guide!.......2006-06-08
I just got back from a trip to Toronto and I found this book incredibly helpful. I bought it mainly for the restaurant and shopping chapters (which were great) but the best parts were the walking tours. There are three days of complete itineraries plus several walking tours of different neighborhoods, and they were so interesting that I ended up spending most of my trip following them. I feel like I really saw the city, not just the touristy highlights. Some of the places I wouldn't have found on my own, and others, like the University of Toronto Campus, I wouldn't have thought of visiting (there are two art galleries on the campus though so it's definitely worth a visit).
The other thing I really loved about the book was that there were sections about restaurants that are good for people with food allergies. This is always an issue for me when I travel, so it was fantastic to have a list of places that I could eat at without worrying.
There were a lot of great things about this book, so I'd highly recommend it. Also, Toronto is a great city so I'm planning another visit!
Was not a useful reference.......2004-07-11
The usual reason to buy a travel book like this is to get some insights about places to visit and use the map to figure out how to get to those places. Unfortunately, the maps in this book aren't always correct. We had tickets to Mama Mia at the Royal Alexandra. The book justs insists that the RA is on the wrong side of Simcoe. Luckily there were plenty of banners hanging along King Street to guide us in the right direction. Still, I was a little more gunshy about all of the Frommer's recommendations after this. Some of the dining recommendations were good but some just made no sense (a highly recommended seemed mediocre and overhyped). The layout of the book means that there is never a single map to show you where both the restaurants and attractions are. Each is relegated to its own section. Due to the Royal Alex mishap, Frommers got relegated to the hotel room and we just used the freebie Hertz map we got when renting the car. And tripadvisor.com got consulted for all attaction advice.
Luckily the book is cheap so I wasn't out much money. But with the wealth of web resources, I would either just rely on the web or buy one of the other travel companies books.
Good Guide to One of The Best Cities I've Ever Visited..........2004-03-19
....there's so much to do and see in Toronto, you are going to need a guide like this one from Frommer's. You aren't likely to miss the big tourist sights--the CN Tower, the Jetsons styled City Hall, the Sky Dome and Ontario Place--but the little secrets like shopping districts where you can get more from your dollar (that is, more than what you get on the daily currency exchange), Frommer's take you there. Also there are superb breakfast places and diners that you can get meals on the cheap. Frommer's helps you find them. You can wander in the historic glory of Casa Loma and it's famed gardens or you can get a dig on the daily downtown hustle and bustle...heck, I don't know if they still do that kinda thing nowadays, but you can even ride Lake Ontario, if you're so inclined. Frommer's will give you the details so's you get the best bang for your buck. Trolley rides, jazz shows, art museums, places to get film developed in an hour, Frommer's got the buzz about. While the CN Tower is a must see, (the glass floor at the skyview scared the bejesus outta me) it isn't the only thing to see and do in this great city. This guide will be indispensible to your enjoyment of Toronto. Trust me.
Good Reference on Canada's Largest City.......2002-06-06
Resourceful, handy, and full of important travel reference, "Frommers Toronto" by Hilary Davidson is a good book to have when traveling to Canada's largest city. Full of maps, suggested itineraries, and the names and addresses of many local establishments, this book came handy when I traveled to Toronto back in October 2000.
While I consider this book a good buy and reference, I am more biased when it comes top travel guides, I highly recommend Lonely Planet's guide to the city. Lonely Planet is an excellent series because it is full of information that not only will benefit you during your stay in Toronto, but also comes in handy when preplanning your trip. Whether you want to learn about entry requirements or more about the city's history and culture, Lonely Planet in my opinion ranks supreme in the travel book industry. Frommer's is a great series, but I feel that it is geared more to travelers 35 years and above, whereas Lonely Planet covers the young adult market.
Still a good book, Frommer's will make your stay in Toronto a pleasant one. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
Interesting read for the obedience competitor.......2007-07-25
William Koehler has a bad reputation among modern dog trainers. I have to admit that I delayed reading any of the Koehler books for years, having being told that they were sickeningly cruel and barbaric.
When I did finally get around to reading the first Koehler book, "The Koehler Method of Dog Training", I was actually rather impressed. Any argument I have with the first Koehler book has to do with the outdated final chapter suggestions for dealing with canine behaviour problems. The methods described for teaching actual basic obedience are easy to read and implement, they emphasize achieving reliability, and are scrupulously fair to the dog.
However despite my fondness towards the earlier Koehler method books, I have a rather ambivalent attitude towards this particular volume.
"The Koehler Method of Utility Dog Training" is similar to the other books in the series. Like the previous Koehler books, it is well written, and the proscribed exercises are logical and sometimes impressively inventive. The techniques in this book generally follow the simple three step Koehler formula of:
1) repeatedly show the dog what you want,
2) repeatedly praise him when he complies,
3) after the dog fully understands how to obey the command, then physically correct him if he ever disobeys.
Personally, I feel that the Koehler method lends itself better to basic obedience training than to complicated Utility level obedience work. I feel that while it's easy to justify using physical corrections to train a dog in basic obedience, when reliability to a "come" or "stay" command might conceivably save a dog's life, it's harder to justify using physical corrections for the exercises found in Utility level trials.
Utility obedience exercises have more to do with the whims and ambitions of humans than the safety of the dog. Unlike a faulty "come" command, the lack of a reliable directed retrieve will not impact on your dog's safety or quality of life. So if your dog can't be motivated to do the complicated utility obedience routine using motivational methods alone, then in my opinion it's probably kinder to find another sport than to attempt to correct him into performing just to satisfy your own ambitions.
The vintage of this book is clearly shown by the incorrect claim that obedience work taught through reward or games cannot be reliable. This was probably true when the book was written, but since then we have discovered many new training methods that lend themselves very well to teaching advanced obedience work (shaping behaviours using marker words, motivating with food rewards, or using prey drive rewards as in Schutzhund). The Koehler method of praise-and-correction-only might get the best out of some dogs, but many dogs will do better in advanced obedience work when taught using different forms of motivator.
However, this book certainly isn't all bad. There are several really useful techniques for teaching utility exercises in here - the technique described for teaching directed retrieve is very clever, and the method of teaching send aways is also particularly good. These could be used as they are, or could easily be adapted to include food or toy rewards if desired. If you are interested in utility dog training, or trying to train your own utility dog, then "the Koehler method of utility dog training" is certainly worth a read.
Be aware that the book builds heavily on foundation work outlined in the two earlier books: "The Koehler Method of Dog Training" and "The Koehler Method of Open Obedience Training". Reading both of the prior books is a necessity to get the most out of this one.
KOEHLER METHOD AGAIN CONSISTENT AND EFFECTIVE.......2000-04-07
Utility obedience is very challenging and Koehler offers consistent and effective methods to train difficult excercises. His emphasis is on clearly communicating with your dog. His methods generally get through to the dog very quickly. By the time you have reached this level (Having first read The Koehler Method, and Open Obedience Training), you should understand that his methods, while firm and authoritative, are not cruel. You will appreciate a fine completion to the obedince series. Although out of print, it is definitely worth finding.

The World of the Luttrell Psalter
ASIN: 0712349340 |
Book Description
What is the status of visual evidence in history? Can we actually see the past through images? Where are the traces of previous lives deposited? Michael Camille addresses these important questions in Mirror in Parchment, a lively, searching study of one medieval manuscript, its patron, producers, and historical progeny.
The richly illuminated Luttrell Psalter was created for the English nobleman Sir Geoffrey Luttrell (1276-1345). Inexpensive mechanical illustration has since disseminated the book's images to a much wider audience; hence the Psalter's representations of manorial life have come to profoundly shape our modern idea of what medieval English people, high and low, looked like at work and at play. Alongside such supposedly truthful representations, the Psalter presents myriad images of fantastic monsters and beasts. These patently false images have largely been disparaged or ignored by modern historians and art historians alike, for they challenge the credibility of those pictures in the Luttrell Psalter that we wish to see as real.
In the conviction that medieval images were not generally intended to reflect daily life but rather to shape a new reality, Michael Camille analyzes the Psalter's famous pictures as representations of the world, imagined and real, of its original patron. Addressed are late medieval chivalric ideals, physical sites of power, and the boundaries of Sir Geoffrey's imagined community, wherein agricultural laborers and fabulous monsters play a similar ideological role. The Luttrell Psalter thus emerges as a complex social document of the world as its patron hoped and feared it might be.
Customer Reviews:
Camille, fantastic art history writer.......2003-07-08
Camille is one of the best new art history writers I have encountered lately. I relish everything he writes! He's not afraid to pull out all the descriptive language and criticize what has been said up to now. Excelent work!!
A Wonderful Tale of Merry Olde England.......1999-01-27
Who would have thought illuminated manuscripts could be so fascinating? Camille guides us along their margins, pointing out ghouls and grotesques and creatures of medieval fancy that are at once amazing and obscene. In his story of the making of Britain's cherished Luttrell Psalter, he reveals an England rife with political strife and intrigue as it shaped itself into a young, unified nation. A beautiful book with brilliant illustrations.
Book Description
The Luttrell Psalter is one of the best-known English manuscripts. Written and illuminated in the early 14th century for Sir Geoffey Luttrell, it is celebrated for its long series of attractive marginal illustrations showing scenes of life in medieval England. The most celebrated sequence of pictures represents the annual cycle of growing crops including plouging, sowing, weeding, harvesting, threshing, and the delivery of the grain. Animal illustrations include domestic boars, geese, pigs, cattle, ferrets, rabbits, birds, cats and mice. Sports, pastimes, entertainers and musicians are all represented, showing the reader that rural life did have a lighter side beyond the routine of work. Janet Backhouse's entertaining study reminds us that although The Luttrell Psalter was created to provide a reflection of the status of the Luttrell family, its preservation has given us a supremely emotive pictorial source for the daily life of rural England.
Customer Reviews:
Large and gorgeous.......2003-01-22
A lovely book with large color photos of some of the pages of the original Luttrell Psalter. Wonderful representation of rural life in the 13th century. My only quibble is that some of the nicer larger images stradle two pages which means that some of the details are lost in the gap between the pages.
Book Description
Depicting scenes of everyday rustic life with vibrant color and earthy wit, the Luttrell Psalter is a unique and vivid document of British culture in the 1320s. Unlike other illuminated manuscripts, the Luttrell Psalter does not focus only on religious imagery, but instead portrays the domestic dramas of the day. Scenes of farming, archaic medical treatments, music and dance, and even marital friction spill over the psalms and cover the margins of this celebrated book.
In The World of the Luttrell Psalter, Michelle Brown unravels the Psalter’s history and sets it firmly within medieval society. A crucial element of the Psalter’s cultural context is its patron, wealthy landowner Sir Geoffrey Luttrell. Brown reveals that knowledge of Luttrell and the book’s audience is as important to understanding the work’s meaning as its striking imagery. Brown’s engaging narrative traces the inspiration and creation of the book, identifying its forebears while elucidating its originality. With lavish illustrations that highlight the inventiveness of the manuscript, The World of the Luttrell Psalter is an appealing guide to a remarkable artifact.

A must for 13th C. history and lifestyle enthusiasts.......1999-07-24
This book is a must for those interested in the everyday life and culture of the late 13th C., as well as those interested in calligraphy, illuminated manuscripts, and period re-creation. It gives a glimpse into a little-talked-about period between the "Dark Ages" and the Gothic era. The pages of the actually manuscript (a religious psalter) are wholly reproduced and show great details about everyday life entwined in the border vines. Backhouse, a noted scholar in this field, takes great pains to provide you with a rare glimpse into the middle ages and intelligently speaks about the creation and culture of the manuscript. I once owned a copy and used it for clothing research. I have known others to use it for medieval archery, entertainment and daily life research, as well as for it's calligraphy and illumination styles.

Customer Reviews:
Visually it ranks a 4.......2004-11-27
Pluses: many large, full-page photos, features appealing & colorful rooms
Minuses: grey text almost impossible to read on pastel pages, some picture captions in such small print that you need a magnifying glass, binding isn't very strong.
Enjoyable book to browse for decorating ideas. I'm afraid I didn't gain much from the text on creating a harmonious interior. The final chapter covers feng shui principles for balancing your life.
Nice photo's but not so very helpful........2004-11-22
The book is a visual feast, filled with some delightfully photographed rooms and will certainly give you some design inspiration.
What it will not do is give you an easy to follow abc to designing Harmonious Interiors.
Each chapter contains only one page of information for 15-30 pages of photo's.
Each photo has a caption telling us why that room has an appeal and you get an assortment of suggestions.
There are plenty of conflicting tips to muddle over if you must, but the best thing to do is treat this book like a magazine - lust and sigh, but don't expect any practical information.
A good coffee table addition but don't expect too much.
Delightful, practical, inspiration, highly recommended........2000-08-05

Book Description
Arthur Bishop is a world-class international inventor, a consummate thinker, and a passionate dreamer, yet few who use his products have ever heard his name. This account of his extraordinary life and work is also an exploration of what it is to be an inventor.
Driven by Ideas is not only the story of Arthur Bishop; it is also a biography of an idea, Bishop's mechanical magnum opus: variable ratio steering. His technology is used in a quarter of the passenger vehicles produced in the world today. This book becomes an edifying account of what an inventor does to develop an idea, as well as the obstacles that must be overcome in order for that idea to come to fruition.
