          Book Description

This volume comprises selected contributions by internationally renowned researchers and represents the state-of-the-art in the field of hemoglobin function in vertebrates living in extreme and temperate environments. The topics have been covered from several viewpoints, including protein chemistry, molecular biology, and evolution. All the contributions chosen for publication focus on phenotypic and genetic adaptations to changing environmental conditions and on gene expression and regulation. The book provides the reader with an update in this field, which is presently enjoying a true renaissance following developments in recent years of powerful methodologies such as site-directed mutagenesis and discoveries of new roles, for example, as oxygen sensors and in nitric oxide metabolism.

            3 out of 5 stars A Book from a Native.......2007-09-18

A rather gentle--and genteel--guidebook from a native of the region. I usually prefer a book with more bite, but this one was OK, provided it was supplemented with a Yankee view. The copy I received was in excellent condition.

            3 out of 5 stars A Bit of a Letdown.......2004-07-17

The places the author wrote up seemed scant and random, and the write-ups themselves were shallow and rather generic. Also, the organization was odd. Disappointing. I hope Lonely Planet publishes something on this region.

5 out of 5 stars The Accidental Tourist.......2002-09-28

Having, for more years than even I may care to remember, long considered myself an 'armchair traveler' I tend to be extremely wary of many travel guides. While the author/editor may have their hearts in the right place ( and of that I'm not always certain either! ) they tend to be written, for the most part, from a slightly askew view-point. By that I simply mean seemingly to have been authored by someone who too is merely 'visiting' the city/region that I am reading about....and therefore long to aggressively explore and 'drink-in' the local culture. Again, a book being written from one is on the 'outside looking in' so to speak. And since I tend to wish to 'blend-in' when travelling ( I loathe actually looking like a tourist, don't you? ) I require a book from one who not only knows all the region's highlights but the cafe's, shops and little nooks and crannies that the 'locals' frequent as well. And when a travel book is written concerning the wonderful 'Lowcountry' of Georgia and South Carolina than I may be even more persnikity! But having lived in the South for a number of years ( I'm a transplanted Savannahnian! ) my critiques may be even more judgemental. Therein lies my dilemma!

The back cover of Cecily McMillan's " The Charleston, Savannah & Coastal Islands Book " states that the author has lived in the 'Coastal Empire' since 1980 and it truly shows. The book itself is penned from one who not only truly knows the region well but from one who seemingly loves it as much as I do. Laid out for easy accessibility I had no problem using the book last summer when visiting Charleston and Kiawah Island. It even gave me much needed updated information on Savannah ( I've been gone far too long! ) such as smaller shops where I could spend my hard earned dollar, tucked away restaurants featuring delicious local cuisine and especially a vast amount of info on the surrounding islands ( Hilton Head I'm coming back to stay next time! Definitely! ) as well. The book also gave a sense of history for the region which I always find very helpful when attempting to 'get the feel' of any city/town and it's local population. Plus, there was an agreeable amount on local beach's that I didn't even know existed. Shame on me! Overall, a very well put together edition that guided me effortlessly through my travels.

Obviously this is a 'two-thumbs up' review of " Charleston, Savannah & Coastal Islands " and why not? The Lowcountry is a marvelous region and one which possess's an abundance of beauty and a laid-back elegance which is undeniable. I found little wrong about this guide ( not much on local Golf courses but it did give badly needed info as to where I might find it! ) from the first-rate information that was easy to use and seemed fully up to date. And while I am no longer a 'local' ( for the moment! ) I am happy with my purchase and for Ms. McMillan in helping me enjoy my summer holiday. Perhaps you truly can go home again! Thank-You!!

5 out of 5 stars a nice blend of history and service journalism........1998-08-25

Ms. Mcmillan knows this region well and the book reflects that. It is well organized, factual, and as up to date as is possible, given the vigorous growth spurt that has enveloped the area. The restaurant reviews are honest and accurate as to specifics. As a resident of the South Carolina coast, it has been helpful to me and to the friends to whom I have given a copy. This is a region rich in history and atmosphere. I think this book conveys a sense of those things in a very entertaining and refreshing way.

4 out of 5 stars Dale Chihuly At Atlantis Resort Hotel On Paradise Island.......2006-01-24

The challenge was to bring beauty to paradise-and the Sun and Moon. Sol Kerzner asked Dale Chihuly to make dazzling yet approachable sculpture for the new Atlantis Resort Hotel on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. Chihuly's answer: four sculptures that respond to Atlantis' architecture and the singular beauty of the site. The Crystal Gate is a glittering tower of crystal soaring nearly 20 feet into the air. The Temple of the Sun has more than 2,300 yellow, orange, and red elements radiating from a fiery globe atop a replica of a Mayan temple. The opalescent white and cobalt blue glass of the Temple of the Moon seems to glow and fill the room with a cool light. Finally, the magnificent Atlantis Seaform Chandelier displays the sealife forms of jellyfish, anemones, squid, and seaweed in delicate shades highlighted with silver and gold. In this extravagant book, designed by Werkhaus Design of Seattle, each piece is shown from concept through completion. Chihuly, working with a collaborative and creative team of artists, glassblowers, technicians, and installers, has created glass sculptures that dazzle with the magic of light.

This book gives a behind the scenes detailing of the creation of the four Chihuly glass sculptures in the Atlantis resort and casino on Paradise Island, Bahamas. The sculptures themselves are amazing to behold, and I'd say that the photos in this book do them some amount of justice. While reading the book in the Atlantis gift shop, my girlfriend and I noticed several aspects of the scultpures which we had missed, and we went back to take a second look.

This is certainly not a book for someone wanting to read about Chihuly, or the sculptures he created for the resort. Aside from the acknowledgement section, you'd be hard pressed to find 1000 words in the whole book. But if you're interested in seeing the artwork, and you can't make it to the Bahamas to see it in person, each picture in this book says at least a thousand words, and many of them are "wow".

(The book would run you $45 in the Atlantis gift shop, so you'll save a few dollars here as well.)

5 out of 5 stars Comfort for horse and rider.......2005-09-29

Jessica Jahiel reveals the three principles of superior saddle-fitting and guides you step by step through the selection and fitting process. She also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of new and used saddles and offers important saddle maintenance tips. A good saddle, carefully selected and well cared for, can last a lifetime. With Jahiel's expert advice, you can make the best selection possible for you and your horse.

3 out of 5 stars Only a starter guide, not 'superior'.......2005-09-04

I like Jessica Jahiel, her riding and horsemanship books and articles are always worthwhile but this little guide only goes into some of the areas of saddle fitting and should be taken as 'the bare essentials' rather than 'superior'.

Unlike many guides it does attempt to cover both western and english style saddles and tries to cover a vast subject area from saddle construction right through to leather care with saddle fit being the main lesson.

              What the book doesn't cover

              - Determining the horse's maximum saddle area. It does discuss the scapula and withers (at the front) but there is no mention of the shelf of the ribs, the 18th rib or determining the width of the spine to ensure that the panels of your saddle are neither too large\long nor too narrow for your horse.

              - There is also no discussion of bridging or how to determine the correct 'shape' of the tree for your horse's back (from front to back not just side to side). Should you look for a banana or a flattish tree? How will you recognise these ?

              - There is no discussion of assessing the angle of the saddle in relation to the slope of the horse's back - neither the angle from the spine as it flows toward the ribs nor the angle of the back from the base of the withers to the loins and whether this is matched correctly by the angle of the panels as they end under the cantle.

All in all - it's a start but by no means comprehensive - for a few dollars its a a beginners guide.

                            Book Description

Following on from the volume on the King's Theatre, Haymarket (published by OUP in 1995), this interdisciplinary study of opera and ballet now turns to London's Pantheon Opera during the period 1789-98. The discovery of six cartons of previously unknown manuscripts in the possession of the Duke of Bedford makes possible the rewriting of a hitherto dark and little understood chapter in the history of opera in London. The King's Theatre, Haymarket, burnt down in 1789. To replace it, the fifth Duke of Bedford and the Marquis of Salisbury secretly backed a new opera company, to be housed in the Pantheon, an elegant exhibition hall hastily converted to house the venture. Part 1 of this book tells a tale of intrigue, blackmail, bankruptcy, arson, and high-society infighting against a background of exalted artistic aspirations and genuine love of opera. The Pantheon tried to engage Mozart to compete against Haydn, and hired some of the most notable singers and dancers in Europe. Mismanagement led to huge losses, and the theatre burnt in highly suspicious circumstances in 1792. The backers tried to impose an artistic vision and financial controls on the management of the rebuilt King's Theatre, Haymarket, when opera returned there in 1793, but by 1795 their failure was evident. The second part of the book is a detailed analysis of the opera and ballet repertoire, personnel, management, costumes, staging practices, and finances of the company, based on the Bedford archive and a wealth of hitherto unused sources. What emerges is the fullest operational analysis ever published of any pre-nineteenth-century English theatre or opera company.

                              Book Description

This interdisciplinary study attempts to make sense of what has long been regarded as a chaotic period in the history of opera in London. In 1778 R. B. Sheridan acquired the King's Theatre and its resident opera company in what we would now call a leveraged buy-out, plunging the opera into escalating debts that were to haunt it into the 1840s. The 1780s and early 1790s were a stormy but exciting era: the company hired some of the foremost singers and dancers in Europe; ballet d'action came to London, with Noverre himself as ballet master; the company employed such composers as Sacchini, Anfossi, Cherubini and ultimately Haydn; it went bankrupt and carried on through years of wrangling in Canchery; the King's Theatre burned down in 1789 and was rebuilt and re-opened in defiance of the Lord Chamberlain's refusal to license the new building. Drawing on librettos and scores, ballet scenarios, pamphlets, scattered manuscripts, legal records, architectural drawings, newspapers and other sources, the authors reconstruct the history of the company its shifting artistic policies, analysing opera and ballet repertoy, performers, production circumstances, finances and managerial infighting.
