Customer Reviews:
A good guide to a great region.......2006-11-28
Glad to see Cadogan is paying attention to this terrific part of Italy. We spent two weeks in Bologna and visited Ravenna, Ferrara, Florence, and Siena (latter two not covered in this book) during that time. Cadogan specializes in giving a complete and very valuable historical and cultural picture of the regions covered in their books. The background is very informative; the only thing we could have desired is more logistical information, buses, trains, opening hours, etc. This information changes frequently but would nevertheless be extremely valuable--perhaps a once-a-year E-Newsletter for people who buy the book? We wasted a lot of time trying to juggle opening hours with public transport schedules.
A very good guide.......2006-09-10
It's a sad reflection on just how overlooked this wonderful and important part of Italy is these days that so few guides cover it at all; in fact, this may be the first one in years that covers Emilia-Romagna comprehensively. Luckily, this effort by seasoned Europe travel writers Facaros and Pauls does the region a great turn.
The book is a convenient size -- not too large, not too small -- and is well organized. There is a fairly comprehensive, if a bit tendentious, section on the history of the region, a very good section on the arts (including a neat alphabetized list of the painters, sculptors, and architects whose works a traveler in the region is likely to encounter), another on food, followed by the mandatory practical section. Finally, there is a detailed description of the region, broken up logically into six areas: Piacenza, Parma, Reggio & Modena, Bologna, Ferrara & Ravenna, and the Romagna/Adreatic portion of the region.
The writers know what to focus on: in addition to the separate section on food, part of the section on history is devoted to Emilia-Romagna's culinary achievements, the region's strong suit. The level of the authors' erudition and up-to-date intelligence is evident throughout the guide. The descriptions of the sights are knowledgeable and engaging but also to-the-point, leaving little to be desired. There is, unfortunately, very little photography inside the guide, save for a "photo essay" in the beginning, but this contributes to the book's portable size and weight. Some of the local maps, too, could be better, but few guidebooks have good maps.
Most impressive, perhaps, have been the book's captions on restaurants in the towns where I stayed. It is clear that the authors actually ate at many of the establishments. Perhpas it's hard to go wrong in Emilia-Romagna, but all the eateries they recommended were well worth a visit.
I have now used the book on two trips to the region, both of which times it was my primary resource. It is now well-worn, and I intend to use it again. What better compliment can you give a travel guide?
Print is too small.......2006-08-03
I lived in Bologna for five years and this is an informative book.
I wish the print were larger. One needs a magnifying glass or strong reading glasses to read in comfort.
Bravo!.......2002-07-22
There is nothing else available that I can find specifically on this wonderful part of Italy. And aren't we lucky it's from the Cadogan's stable!
Intelligent writing for discerning travellers; Cadogan Guides are for the independent traveller who really wants to get to grips with a place. They also provide all the essential information on how to get from here to there, hotel and restaurant suggestions. Perhaps a bit more heavily concentrating on the upper price range than what I desire, but still useful.
Recommended for any journeying to this corner of Italy.......2001-01-17
Cadogan Bologna & Emilia-Romagna is the first guide to cover this corner of Italy, which provides excellent art, scenery, and foods. Chapters profile the 'best' of the region with blends of historical background, cultural insights, and destination-oriented tips on what to see, where to stay and eat, and how to best enjoy the region. A recommended pick for any journeying to this corner of the world.

The Extremely Useful Guide to Teaching Primary Sources.......2005-03-16
What the history textbook I read in school said about the Scopes "Monkey" Trial in 1925 was that defense attorney Clarence Darrow put prosecuting attorney and three-time Democratic nominee for president William Jennings Bryan on the witness stand and forced him to admit that the days of creation were not literal 24-hour days, thereby denying the Fundamentalist's literal interpretation of the Bible and the story of divine creation set forth in Genesis. The moment is also captured in the stage and theatrical version of "Inherit the Wind." However, when I finally read a transcript of the case of The State of Tennessee vs. John Thomas Scopes and looked at the celebrated "duel in the shade," I discovered that rather than Darrow compelling a confession, Bryan had made the admission freely, heading off Darrow from the painting him a corner. What was in the history books was not what "really" happened.
Years later I discovered that the Scopes Trial was never mentioned in the grade school textbooks of America's schools until "Inherit the Wind" debuted on Broadway (and then usually associated with the rise of the Ku Klux Klan). What appeared in most of those textbooks represented what was in the play, an admitted dramatization of the events in Dayton, Tennessee that sweltering summer of 1925, and not based on the trial transcript. In graduate school I was fortunate to have a couple of professors who emphasized the importance of analyzing primary documents, so when Susan H. Veecia put together "Uncovering Our History: Teaching with Primary Sources," she is preaching to the choir and I am just here to help spread the word along.
Veccia is the former manager of educational outreach for the Library of Congress and currently an independent library and education consultant. Specifically, she managed the first large-scale program designed to make the Library of Congress's digital primary-source material more accessible to K-12 teachers and school librarians. Consequently,
The cover photograph is of James B. Washington, a Confederate prisoner taken by a young George Armstrong Custer. In the middle of the book the photo is presented as an example of visual literacy, explaining how she would show young students the photograph and get their reaction before explaining that Washington and Custer had been classmates at West Point (i.e., there was a personal history behind the photograph). This represents the thesis of the book's first chapter, which focuses on how primary sources provide such "magical moments of insight." Providing these for their students becomes the goal for history teachers in their own classrooms, and this book provides some suggestions for how to do so, along with the necessary resources.
Chapter One, "Primary Sources: Magical Moments of Insight," defines primary sources as personal stories, ongoing investigations, and raw and unvarnished materials. Veccia then details how teachers and students can access primary source collections, advocating a team approach between teachers and librarians, while also listing various virtual library collections. Chapter Two looks specifically at "The American Memory Website from the Library of Congress" (be forewarned, once you go to the link the next hour of your life is gone), where you can find specific collections of papers (e.g., Alexander Graham Bell, Hannah Arendt), as well as collaborative products between the LOC and various historical societies, and places to find frequently requested photographs from the Prints and Photographs Division of the LOC. There are examples of text collections, recorded sound collections, map collections, motion picture collections, and online exhibitions to indicate exactly what you can find at this site.
"Finding Materials Online" is covered in Chapter Three, with advice specifically directed towards librarians and teachers. You can search the collections, maybe find some helpful lesson plans, and do even more sophisticated searches for information. Chapter Four is an essay on "Strategies for Teaching History" by Stanlee Brimberg, which focuses on the skills of basic versus visual literacy, and how to manage student learning with primary documents, including ways of assessing what students have learned. In Chapter Five, Gail Petri talks about using such materials with young children in her essay, "It's Elementary!" Petri makes some specific recommendations for dealing with this particular age group and has a list of curriculum connections designed for elementary schools.
Chapter Six, "History Told Firsthand in Middle School," by Laura Wakefield, emphasizes both oral history and teaching photo-analysis skills. In terms of finding resources online, Wakefield lists some helpful ways of finding interviews from the "American Life Histories Manuscripts from the Federal Writers Project, 1936-1940." "Focus on the Questions in High School" is covered by Michael Federspiel in Chapter Seven. Federspiel is interested in students forming their own hypotheses, and in being able to work with not only single documents but also with multiple documents or document sets.
Veccia devotes Chapter Eight to "Professional Development: The Road Ahead," to suggest what the future will bring for teachers interested in teaching with primary sources. Here is where you get information about the technical considerations for using American Memory and Learning Page professional development materials, the latter including document analysis worksheets, handouts, workshops and materials, and even more helpful things to know and online places to go. The final chapter on "Going to the Source" is Veccia's encomium to the Library of Congress.
"Uncovering Our History: Teaching with Primary Sources" will help teachers, librarians and students deal with the overwhelming amount of information that is freely available online. This book is a hands-on guide that can help with such navigation so that you will now how American Memory resources can be used to teach history, increase information literacy, and help cultivate critical thinking in students whether they are in elementary, middle, or high school. There are a lot of tips for integrating primary sources into your classroom, tips on how to overcome the problems students will have with original materials, and how to include historical methods that will compel students to engage in the "big questions" that history exists to teach us. This book makes me wish I was teaching History rather than Humanities.

Great service.......2007-06-27
Book was received in good used condition, exactly as described by seller. Very fast shipping. Would absolutely purchase from this seller again. Thanks much!
This book stopped my puppy from peeing on the carpet!.......2000-05-21
This book is the best "How To" book I've ever read. I'm not one for instructional manuals, but when my puppy came home and decided the carpet was the best place to relieve himself time after time, I was desperate. This book taught me not only how to potty train my pup, but also how to play with him in the best way to keep him from biting and snapping later in life. The author is a dog trainer and knows what she's talking about. All of the info was easy to understand and easy to put into use in every day life. A pretend schedule is included for various situations such as introducing your puppy to other people. The book also has amusing antidotes about either the author's pets or other people's pets she has run across. The author explains what you should do as far as training and play goes and why you should do it. She has some consequenses included. This is a wonderful book for a first time puppy-lover. It is a must have! Keep it next to the dog food and newspapers!
Wonderful!.......1999-10-17
The best puppy raising book I've seen. Has a little bit(or a lot) of everything puppy related from selecting your puppy to nifty tricks and games; this book is a definate #1 resource as to dogs & puppies.

Book Description
This is the story of a particular Javanese group of 'matching' musical instruments called the gamelan Digul, and their creator, the Indonesian musician and political activist Pontjopangrawit (1893-ca. 1965). He was a superb Javanese court musician, who had entertained at the of king Paku Buwana X as a child. In this magnificent artistic environment he learned how to build gamelans, and also became a sought-after teacher. Involved in radical political activities, Pontjopangrawit was arrested in 1926 for his participation in the movement to free Indonesia from Dutch rule, and spent the next six years in the notorious Dutch East Indies prison camp at Boven Digul. Made in 1927 entirely from 'found' materials in the prison camp, including pans and eating utensils, the gamelan Digul became a symbol for the independence movement long after Pontjopangrawit's own release in 1932. In the 1940s, it was transported to Australia, where the Dutch and their prisoners took refuge from the Japanese invaders. At first interned as enemy aliens by the Australian government, the ex-Digulists were finally released. Cultural activities within the Australian Indonesian community involving the gamelan Digul served to create sympathy and interest for Indonesia's independence, which was granted in 1945. Tragically, Pontjopangrawit himself was later arrested by the Indonesian goverment during the 1965 revolution, and died in custody. This book's musical and political discussions will interest all those concerned with Indonesian and Southeast Asian music, performing arts, history and culture as well as the beginnings of Australian-Indonesian friendship. Margaret Kartomi, AM, FAHA, Dr. Phil, is the Professor of Music at Monash University. She has published over a hundred articles and several books, annotated CDs and LP records on the music of various parts of Indonesia and other ethnomusicological topics. She was elected a member of the Australian Academy of Humanities i
