Redefining History.......2004-09-14

Beware of the glorification of Islam and Muslims. Perhaps, "Islam in the Middle Ages" would more accurately describe the focus of the editor.

As a teacher who appreciates the integration of fine art with history, this books good use of such would have been more greatly appreciated if credit would have been given to the artists.

Inspiring.........2003-06-09

This book is the best of a series of "the big book of.." by David E. Carter.
With its hefty selection of works to see and be inspired from, With clear sections and a selectiveness uncharacteristical of carter, this book can be used over and over again, and you can always find something new in it.
It is also of great value. If Graphis ( a high-end graphic design publisher) was to publish such a volume, you can bet the price will be over a hundred dollars.
In short, every designer needs this book.

Decent Book.......2001-10-10

I think this is a good book, but I think people need to be aware of what type of book it is. I think this book is excellent for pictures and basic dog knowledge. There is some information about all aspects of this breed, which I think is good. I don't think though that it is ideal book for people wanting to understand GSD psychology, as well as Schutzhund work. It does cover these areas to some degree as I mentioned, but not near enough.

I would recommend this book to people that like GSDs, and perhaps are interested in showing them. It has superb photographs and is nice to own for those purposes. I personally think though that showing dogs is primarily what cripple the breed characteristics and temperament that predominantly are used for any form of working task. If one wants to show their dog, then they should at least qualify in certain events that protect the breed's instinct and it's designed abilities. Many people feel that this is very unnecessary, especially when it comes to training them to protect. My opinion to people who want a pet is to get just that. I don't feel GSDs or any other working canines should be bred for any other reason than their intended purpose whether that is conformation work or hunting wild game.

I also wish that books designed for specific breeds would discuss things about their behavior rather than basic dog maintenance and other common knowledge topics that are discussed in books on dogs in general.

Informative and Interesting.......2001-08-31

Brit Sheila Rankin compiled this fascinating coffee table book which includes a wealth of information on the German Shepherd dog. The photographs are excellent and numerous. She includes information from a wealth of different resources and touches on everything from the History of the GSD to how to house train a new puppy.

I would suggest that this volume is a wonderful resource for those wanting an overall picture of what a German Shepherd is and should be, however, it is Not a training tool.

The chapters to do with training a GSD are abbreviated and simplistic in nature. The Ultimate German Shepherd Dog is however, a great resource for those contemplating owning a GSD or a a companion book for a more substantial training manual.

This is an excellent book! I recommend it to any one who wants to learn more about the German Shepherd, or even if you do own it buy it! The history is very detailed and each time I read it I get more info. I have a Shepherd myself and this book helped me work with her. It's a great book!

Wonderful!.......2001-02-08

This book is a great coffee table book for both the novice Shepherd fancier and the experienced. It goes into detail about many subjects, from why the GSD is so much more than just a dog, through to health matters, with a particularly good illustrated breed standard and the views of various well known judges, with professional colour photos throughout. I like the sections on police, guide and service dogs written by people in those fields. This version has a far nicer cover than my copy, mine is beige and plain!

The Ultimate Book on the Ultimate Dog.......1999-08-08

This is a great book with over 200 color pictures. Each chapter is written by a different expert on each subject. The book covers many different subjects, including the breed's origins, all about the GSD puppy, diet and nutrition, training, health care, show dogs, police dogs, schutzhund, and so much more. I would recommend this book to anybody who is about to buy a German Shepherd.

This is a tiny book packed with information. Every collectable category of art nouveau is clearly listed with the key artists and what to look for to determine value for the various objects. It is a great guide for the auction house and the online auctions.

covers a wide range of different antiques and styles with a focus on the main artists of each style,descriptions,marks,and tips for what to look out for, but does not provide enough examples of the works of each artist or factory featured. good reading,well written,extensive and informative. the book contains a good number of selected designers and manufacturers as well as the different marks of many of them and that is very helpful. the author,Eric Knowles,is one of the leading experts in the field and you notice that as you read. it is a shame he does not put a value estimate by the photos.

As a person who seems to kill every plant she owns (even cacti), I picked up this book when planning to create a kitchen herb garden. I really learned a lot.

A Beginner's Herb-Growing Bible!.......2000-11-09

I happened to run across (and purchase) this book when I was first researching herb growing. Boy, did I luck out!

This beautifuly arranged and designed book, is a wonderful resource for rookie herbalists/gardeners. Topics include the selecting and growing of herbs, harvesting and preserving herbs, and creating gifs and recipes with herbs. Each bit of instruction is followed by an informative set of pictures or diagrams. Thanks to this book I was able to grow and harvest my first potted herb garden -- and make some pretty tasty herb butter to boot.

I would caution experienced gardeners and herbalists against purchasing this book, as it will most likely be too basic for them.

Before I end this, though, here's a gift idea that I made for a friend as a housewarming gift. Wrap up this book along with a tiny garden shovel, gloves, potting soil, clay pots, and seeds. She/he will be delighted!

This book is wonderful in helping to plan your herb garden. It provided several tips on propogation, and even more on the various herb uses. Fabulous gift giving ideas. Would like to see more problem solving tips, but I won't give my book up!

Thorough biography of the author of an Australian icon.......1999-07-14

This book is a biography of Arthur Hoey Davis who wrote under the pseudonym of Steele Rudd. His stories "On our selection" and others in the series were the most popular publications in Australia in the early years of the twentieth century. The rural characters he created, Dad and Dave, are deeply embedded in an earlier Australian consciousness. The book documents for the first time the details of Davis's somewhat tragic life and the appropriation of his characters by others without recompense. The famous radio serial "Dad and Dave" was extremely popular in Australia. Although it used his characters, it was not written or authorised by Steele Rudd. The book reveals Davis's real understanding of the misery of the life of the small Australian "selector" despite the affection for it with which his stories are usually associated. Selectors have similarities with the situation of small landholders and the homesteaders in the USA in the nineteenth century.
