The only way to review this book is to go and use it. Field test it. That's why I ordered, of course, so I was predisposed to favor it. Well, it has made my longing to trek in the southern Andes more urgent than ever. I'll review the utility of the book when I get back!

A great book!.......2006-12-14
I liked this history book! It is about a girl who is going through the Great Depression. Her dad lost his job during the Depression. They had a boarding house to help pay the mortgage in 1934. There is a picture that shows what Kit's house looked like. That is why I liked it.
Hard times with a human touch.......2006-03-20
This is not the book I would normally buy but I'm interested in the Depression years in the US and I'm also a publication designer. Using the neat Amazon facility 'Search Inside' the book convinced me this would be a good addition to my design library. The book's production really is first class, so a tip of the hat to Will Capello who art directed it.
Don't be put off by it only being sixty pages long because there is a lot of information in words and images, all presented in an elegant, creative way. The four chapters are divided into themed spreads and each of these uses a scrapbook design style to display the photos and graphics, for instance, pages sixteen and seventeen about the 1932-33 Winter of Despair has a short introduction and ten images with detailed captions. To avoid the feeling that history might come across as being distant and remote a really nice touch is the use of paintings showing Kit and other girls relating to the events described on many pages. If I have a criticism it is that there is no further reading list. The text is such that it will certainly arouse any reader's curiosity to find out more.
'Welcome to Kit's World 1934' is a visual delight and gives a human touch to the dramatic events of the Depression years.

History, scrapbook style.......2004-06-02
I bought Welcome to Kit's World: 1934 last year when I was faced with a challenge: I was trying to assemble a credible family scrapbook that would feature pictures and stories from the early 20th century - particularly the 1930s - but I realized that I understood very little about that important decade in American history other than what I knew from a few books like Steinbeck's. My grandpa's stories about growing up were priceless, and deserved pages that honored both the look and feel of their time. I needed a quick way to "catch up" on the Thirties (and a source for collage photos to scan).
Thank goodness for Pleasant Company. If you haven't heard about their American Girl books and dolls let me tell you that they may be this generation's solution to getting girls ages 7 to 12 interested in history. Kit is a fictional character in a series of books written to appeal to girls in that age range. Growing up in the 1930s, she deals with issues typical of that generation as well as everything young people from any time deal with, so modern readers can truly relate to her.
Kit is made more real in the mind's eye when put in the context of this Welcome To book. The book's organization takes us from the prosperous late 20s that set it up, through the Depression and onto the New Deal at the end. We find hundreds of era photos of people, places and things that made up the fabric of life back then. Richly supplemented with illustrations, the visuals are grounded with chapter introductions and short blurbs that contain interesting trivia. I can see how it would be a good resource for school reports in grade school, but it's arranged in a fun way for kids so that they'll read it even when they don't "have" to.
Worth owning if you have a grade school child in the house. Check out the other Welcome To books for some of the other fictional girls: colonial times, pioneer days, Victorian era, 1940s, etc; history will come alive for them.

Wow!.......2002-03-24
All I can say is Wow! Welcome to Kit's World is fantastic! The Book exlpores life during the Great Depression, from how people saved money, to how Hollywood entertained them. Also has Amelia Earheart, talks about the Cincinnati Reds Baseball team, Ernie Lombardi, the Dust Bowl, the Roaring Twenties, hoboes and tramps, etc. An overall good book, but it does repeat parts of the Peek into the Past sections from other Kit books, and even recycles some of the pictures. But otherwise a good read, and not unlike the Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness book series.

On the farm, there was no electricity, telephone or radio; farm work was performed with horse and mule. Harvesting hay, threshing wheat and working in the cornfields contrasted with Huck Finn-type adventures floating down the river in a leaky homemade boat with playmates. Accidents on the farm called for frantic horseback rides for the only doctor in the nearby town. The author relates the happy times along with his sadness when events force him to leave the farm. His adult career in engineering and management positions in NASA's manned space programs, Gemini, Apollo and the Space Shuttle, contrasted sharply with his simple boyhood life.

A Book of Kells recalls the lives and unearths the egos of John Kell and Kathleen Ward who meet in 1917 when he is a Canadian sailor stationed in Portsmouth, England. Her father, a Methodist Sunday School teacher, brings him home for tea. Kathleen’s sister writes to Jack until she gets married in 1924 and Kathleen takes up the correspondence. Meanwhile, Jack has been getting an education and has spent a year evangelizing the Swampy Cree to whom he plans to return for another five years. When he gets Kathleen’s letter it is like manna from heaven. He proposes awkwardly and she asks him to come over for another look. But, when he does, she smashes him at tennis and banishes him to his far northern post. However, they agree to give themselves a year to reconsider. Seventy-two letters get through, even though the native reserve is cut off from civilization for six months of the year. They marry in 1927 and she goes up to Oxford House, Manitoba, by canoe along the old fur trade route. Nine months later, in mid-winter, she treks for five days by horse-drawn cariole to find a place to give birth. When I enter the picture during the Great Depression, a stressed-out minister’s wife and three little girls are crammed into a duplex on a working-class street in Toronto. We’re working our hearts out as little “examples,†trying to help Father. In later years, I discovered an emotional toll to pay. I couldn’t sit through a church service without breaking into unrestrained weeping. My teen-age and college years were near-suicidal. What seemed to be the fundamental problem was that I had been trained to put away my ego in favor of redeeming my soul. Still, religion was a great strength, protecting our family from tendencies towards alcoholism and mental illness. I struggle desperately to avoid the pitfall of black sheep, which seemed inevitable for the youngest of three “perfect†minister’s daughters. The name of this family voyage recalls the famous ninth-century illuminated gospel manuscript, The Book of Kells.

Dad was making good money and we even had the luxury of a Model T Ford. I had a brother, one year old when I was born. Everything was going fine. Another brother came along it 1928. It was the next year that it happened: the stock market crashed. I was four that year and had little idea what all the excitement was about, but I knew something was wrong. We sold our car, we didn't have any money and I heard them say the bank was going to take our house. We were having something called a “Depression,” whatever that was.

The importance of ornament in the emergence and development of abstract art has long been underestimated. Indeed, such pioneers as Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian looked upon ornament as a sin in which abstraction should not indulge. Yet ornament had a decided if surreptitious impact on abstract art, this book demonstrates. Featuring four artists who help to highlight the role of ornament in the history of art-Kandinsky, Mondrian, Henri Matisse, and Frank Stella-this generously illustrated volume examines in depth the influence of ornament as a formal and methodical element in abstract art. The book begins with the innovative pictorial conception of Philipp Otto Runge, whose early nineteenth-century paintings featured the last genuine form in the history of ornament-the arabesque. The authors trace the influence of the arabesque and show how, side by side with the "royal way" of Cubism, arabesque abstraction opens up a second doorway to the world of non-figurative art. Following other lines of inquiry, the authors explore theoretical findings on the theme of ornament and what it reveals about the relation between abstraction and figurative art; modern artists' preoccupation with the ornamentation found in distant cultures (such as Matisse with the Orient and Oceania, Ad Reinhardt with Asian culture, and Josef Albers and Barnett Newman with pre-Columbian ornament); and ornamentation's relation to Minimalism, new media, digital technology, the Renaissance, and the Rococo. Great for Draft Owners.......2007-08-07
An excellent book on owning drafts in particular and any horse in general. Informative, interesting, and never boring. It also gives information on drafts and draft diets that is not common knowledge. As a new owner of drafts I've found this book invaluable.
Truly an owner's manual.......2005-03-20
This book does an excellent job of explaining maladies and situations that are unique to the ownership of draft horses. The authors discuss the fact that draft horses have different digestion than light horses. There are hoof problems, muscular problems, and nutrient storage issues here that are unheard of among light horses as well. It was an eye-opener to read how many differences there are between these creatures and their lighter cousins. I wholeheartedly recommend this book for any prospective or present draft horse owner. There are many issues here that could be vital to your horse's health.
As for other things... do not expect this book to overly extol the draft horse's positive values. It does briefly mention them, but in a more clinical, objective sense rather than warm praise. This is indeed an 'owner's manual', reminding me for the most part of an instructional book on a new lawnmower, except extremely well-written, easy to understand, and simple to apply. It is filled with good information.
It seems that, if you are interested in such a book, you are already interested in the beautiful and enchanting draft horse. Therefore, you don't need any inducement to love them. Once again, I completely recommend this book. There is much to think about. Enjoy.
$61.19?! This seller is asking way too much!.......2004-05-07
"Low Price" - NOT! List price is only $32 (for a brand new book, I might add), & I have found it elsewhere for that. I recommend not buying this (USED, "new condition") book from this seller at the grossly inflated price of $61.19! Very good book, but no sense paying that much more when it can be gotten for the cover price.
Great Book about Drafts, Useful for Other Breeds as Well.......2001-02-14
This is an easy to understand handbook. It covers all aspects of owning and maintaining a healthy draft horse: with topics considered ranging from exercise to diet; hoofcare to healthcare. The volume would serve any draft owner well, but would also make a great addition to any farrier's library. I would also highly recommend this book to owner's of other breeds as many of the disease processes, parasites, and lameness issues prove to be, for the most part, non-breed specific.

The Buyid wazir Abu I-Fadl Ibn al-bAmid (died 970 A.D.) became famous as a poet and expert in epistolary literature ( inwac), but also as a scholar and scientist. Until now our only source of information was from fragments and quotations in later literature. Fortunately, two Arabic manuscripts from the 12th and 13th centuries have been preserved containing seven letters which were sent to the Buyid emir bAdudaddaula, and confirming posterity's high opinion of him. Moreover, they reveal the originality of a personality which, based on the knowledge of Greek and contemporary sciences, drew new conclusions. The text of the letters is published here together with translations into German, commentary and complete glossary. In a deliberate and complicated style they discuss themes of meteorology, physics, psychology and philosophy. These letters are extremely important for the history of Arabic literature and the history of sciences.
