Customer Reviews:
Might as well have bought a Fodor's .......2007-05-03
Perhaps erroneously, I expect Lonely Planet guides to cater to the smart and budget-conscious traveler. Far too many of the hotels and especially the restaurants in this guide were waaay out of my price range. Further, the writer recommends Granville Island as a must-see of artists studios and a farmer's market, when it was actually a Disneyland version of such. Lastly, her chipper enthusiasm for diversity-as-consumer-product chafed. Better to get Douglas Coupland's City of Glass; it's not a guidebook per se, but it's a better guide.
Travel .......2007-03-13
I tend to buy a small guide to carry around and a bigger one such as lonely planet that has more indepth information, but this trip I didn't use the lonely planet that much and stuck with the Top 10 travel guide most of the time, although I suppose it helped that I was visiting someone who lives in Vancouver. I highly recommend the top 10 guide (much better to carry around for quick access of info.) The benefit of the Lonely planet guide I think is to use it ahead of time when planning things out and using the book info to supplement internet research.
Great for tourism and more.......2006-04-23
Whether you are planning to visit Vancouver as a tourist, or you are doing preliminary research about it as a potential permanent destination later in your life, Lonely Planet Vancouver sums it all up nicely for you. The first few pages do a great job of giving the newcomer a birdseye view of the city's composition, lifestyle, culture, etc. The book moves on to cover other aspects from dining to outdoors activities and much more in a detailed yet not overwhelming way.
The only shortcoming this guide (as well as other Lonely Planet books) has is a lack of more pictures, which other series such as DK's Eyewitness Travel Guides excel at. However the competing book about Vancouver in that series is nowhere near as comprehensive as this one.
Updated version - A great improvement.......2005-08-10
I read reviews of the last version and the Lonely Planet people have really taken on board the feedback people gave. Its easy to read, VERY up to date and has some great additions. A great top 10 things to do in Vancouver, it details the top restaurants, good summaries of local areas etc. Its a brilliant overview and now we have our trip all maped out! Its well laid out and the use of color is helpful too. One of the best city guides I've seen.
Unorganized.......2004-04-25
The book contains a lot of information for sure. The thing is for a first time visitor it does not really provide a big help. Which things are a must to see? The book does not say. Instead the reader is forced to read each every section of the book because the book is divided into sections, each covering a part of the city.
All in all it is a bit disappointing.

Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected.......2002-10-02
The map is ok. Laminated and colorfull, but too small. I was looking for more details.
Excellent brochure sized city map.......2001-08-11
First, I must say that this item was not what I expected. I thought I had ordered a guide book, not a map! Having said that, I will not be returning the item because it is an excellent value and an item which I'm sure I will get much use out of on my first trip to Vancouver.
The map is actually 7 maps in one brochure-sized, laminated, accordian-folded sheet -- much easier to reference than maps in a guidebook. The maps include not just the main city center but the outlying areas of interest. It even has a suggested walking tour described in words and graphically represented on the map. Best of all - Lonely Planet has pointed out on the map not just the main touristy attractions but smaller recommended ones - like "Little Sister's Book & Art Emporium" and "Kitsilano's Cyber Cafe".
Highly recommended.

Book Description
We don't believe in dragons anymore, but we continue to celebrate these fantastic creatures in stories, movies and songs. In fact dragons are so popular there is a science just to study them! In a book that is carefully researched, brimming with energy and charm, and full of interesting facts, best-selling author and illustrator Gail Gibbons presents dragons from cultures all over the world -- their origins, their place in mythology and folktales, and the reasons why they are still so fascinating today.
Customer Reviews:
Plagiaristic rubbish........2004-09-16
Don't waste your money or time on this children's book, get the books that it's plagiarized from instead.
The illustrations in "Behold... The Dragons!" appear to have been awkwardly copied by a artless hand from two books. Those books are
Dragons: A Natural History, and
Dragons: Truth, Myth, and Legend. It would have been fine and normal if they simply reproduced the antique woodcuts in
Dragons: A Natural History, like everyone does- but when they sloppily redrew them, they colored them exactly the same way as the books they're copied from! (The colorized woodcuts in that book were memorably silly-looking, with splashes of technicolor which weren't mentioned in any texts, so it's obvious they were copied from that book and that book alone, and in vastly inferior quality.) And the illustrations in
Dragons: Truth, Myth, and Legend are modern illustrations- hardly in the public domain- with no mention of having asked that still-living artist for permission.
Like the two books it is ripped off from, this book attempts to cover all sorts of dragon myths from all around the world. (It's nice that it preserved the multicultural approach, at least.) The text is also based upon those two books, except it's been oversimplified for even younger readers (4-8) than those, and even more mistakes have been made. "Maybe it was" has been rephrased as "it was." The book is careful to make clear in all incidences that dragons are pretend; that's certainly a valid and scientifically-correct stance, and is perhaps appropriate for some children. However, for children and adults who were expecting a flight of fancy from a book about dragons, it's a bit of a letdown.
Bad illustrations, bad text, plagiarism, mistakes, no bibliography. I didn't see much redeeming value in this book.
Son Loves It.......2004-01-12
My 5-year-old son loves this book. He likes to pretend he is a knight and dress up in a knight costume and fight his imaginary dragons. I like that the book explains that they are not real, because he sometimes has problems going to bed at night because he's afraid of imagined dangers. The book has very nice pictures, the writing on each page is not too long or complicated, and it explores a wide variety of dragons from different cultures. I think this book is also good in the way it introduces symbolism and encourages logical thinking.
DON*T EVEN THINK ABOUT BUYING THIS BOOK!!!.......2001-08-12
If you believe, love, or at least like dragons dont read this book.It destroys your beliefs and wonders.Gail Gibbons certainly did not have any imagination when he was a child. My friends and I LOVE dragons. We really did not like this book.Gibbons is trying to explain every thing about dragons, making dragon believers look like jerks.THE ONLY REASON I PUT A STAR IN THE RATING IS FOR THE A+ ART WORK.
disappointing.......2001-07-18
I love dragons, and so does everyone else in my family. I hoped for a book that would feed my love of dragons with information and new dragons to love. Instead, I found this book constantly de-mystifying, taking all the wonder out of dragons. There were a couple of new dragons in the book, and some bits of new information, but overall, I felt a real letdown because I felt the author, instead of wondering with me about where all these dragons came from, explained them away, explained them out of existence so that they became silly stories ignorant people used to believe. Very sad, especially for children. Though there were token entries on Aztec and Chinese dragons, overall the book was very Eurocentric. It was also quite simplistic. It is possible to write a book for this age group that simplifies without being simplistic. The best thing about the book was the illustrations which were very colorful, cheeful and eye-catching. I would recommend this book for the child who doesn't read but likes looking at pictures of dragons, and tell the adults not to read anything but the names of dragons.
Behold...the Dragons!.......2000-01-13
Gibbons gives an overview on the history of dragons from various cultures. The text is brief, but informative. Illustrations are colorful and well done. A great read. This is an excellent folklore book and is recommended reading for students from 1st through the 6th grade, and for teachers, as well.

The unconquerable, invincible, unbeatable, Cigar!.......2005-03-09
This horse was a wonder horse and clearly deserves to have his name mentioned alongside the great Citation. Citation may have won the triple crown, but Cigar conquered the breeder's cup and Dubai world cup, things Citaion never even got the chance to do. This horse was wonderful. The trainer conditioned him carefully and fully, the owner raced him heartily and responsibly, and the jockey rode him wonderfully. Truely one of the greats of our time. I would strongly reccomend this book.
What a Horse, What a Team.......2002-01-13
I am happy to report that the writer for this book is in the same league as the horse he's writing about. The result? A thoroughly enjoyable story of how Cigar, the charismatic son of Palace Music and Solar Slew, carved a name for himself in racing history and in the process became the sweetheart of the sports world.
Author Jay Hovdey did his homework for the book, tracking down and interviewing all the major players in Cigar's life from the folks who foaled him to those who tended to his needs as he raced. He also took the time to get to know and probe beneath the surface of the public exteriors of the people who surrounded Cigar. This means that the reader has a feeling for how things unfolded behind the scenes as Hovdey relates Cigars meteroic rise to stardom. What makes it even sweeter is that Cigar was a late bloomer with delicate legs that resulted in all but one of his initial 11 races being run on grass. As it turns out, Cigar didn't like grass, and it wasn't until his bones had a chance to strengthen and someone in the stables lobbbied strongly for giving him a try on the dirt that Cigar came into his own. And what a show it was! Not only did he win 16 times in succession, equally Citation's record, but he beat out the best in international competition after being shipped to Arabia where he ran in unfamiliar surroundings on a less than ideal track.
If this book lacks anything, it's a personal connection with the horse by the author. Although Hovdey does a great job of relating what others have to say about Cigar, you never have the feeling that he himself has connected with the spirit of the colt. He talks about Cigar from a distance, removed by time and reporting from the immediate physical presence of the animal. Time and again you read that Cigar's exercise jockeys thought he was smart, how he loved peppermints, that his trainer always knew when he was in a playful mood, that he always carried himself with dignity, but in the end these are all second hand accounts. You never get the feeling that you are actually in the presence of Cigar, running your hand down the muscled neck, smelling his sweat as he cools out, seeinig his one, white-ringed eye roll in your direction as he listens to what you're saying, the feel of his lips as he plucks one of the peppermint candies he was so fond of from your hand, smelling that sweet mix of straw, manure, linament and sweat that is so much a part of all stables. Perhaps because I've spent time around horses I missed these very personal touches which would have brought the horse alive for me.
In the end this is a very competent, well-written book, but it lacks the spark that would have made it a 5-star recommendation for me.
Great book!.......2000-11-29
I really enjoyed reading this book, although I feel that it doesn't really say all that much about the great big bay, it mainly talks about his owner, trainer, and jockey; although Cigar is also mentioned quite alot. In the middle of the book, it contains some wonderful photographs of Cigar and his connections.
Could I give it six stars?.......2000-03-03
I certainly enjoyed this book. It was well written, easy to understand, and had funny and enjoyable parts often. I don't think I sat down and didn't smile after ten minutes of reading. I loved the pictures, they were simply magnificent and portrayed the beauty, power, and grace of Cigar wonderfully. The writer really went into the emotions of the horse, not just the people associated with Cigar. The writer really told the story well, and I would read anymore of the books he wrote. I would definatly reccomend this to anyone, even if they don't know squat about horse racing, they would have a much better understanding of it after they read this book!

Burpee is a widely known and trusted name in the gardening world, and the Burpee Basics series of colorful growing guides to specific plant types is a great reference for novice gardeners. In Roses, Mary C. Weaver clearly presents the necessary information for beginning rose growers: how to select the right roses for your garden, prepare the soil, plant, fertilize, water, and prune. Rose growers have a distinct vocabulary, and the large section on rose varieties contains a helpful glossary to terms used throughout the book. This is also the section most eager readers will turn to first: it's packed with information on the different categories within the four basic classes (old roses, modern roses, shrub roses, and climbers and ramblers) and presents excellent descriptions of 100 rose varieties, with photographs of most. As if anxious not to leave any good candidates out, Weaver also gives lists of additional varieties in each category. A generous resource list in the appendix recommends additional reading and offers North American sources for roses and garden supplies, rose societies, Web sites, and newsletters. Concise, reasonably complete, and easy to use, this is a good first rose book for any rose-loving gardener.

Customer Reviews:
A treasure of a book!!!.......1999-01-11
Exceedingly well researched and clearly presented, this book makes roses doable for everyone-no matter the climate, type of rose, or gardener's experience. There are terrific sections on choosing roses (grafting or own-root, grades, where to buy, etc.), planting, and general care. But the best part is "the rose gallery"-a list of 100 most carefree roses from among all the rose types, including old roses, modern ones, shrubs, and climbers. Weaver checked with some 70 rosarians, plant pathologists, and nursery growers in 40 states and weighed disease resistance, hardiness, general vigor, and overall performance to come up with the list. Each rose gets a good description and most have photos. A wonderful book.

The vanishing not elusive prophets.......2005-05-12
Collected in this volume are papers read at joint meetings on the prophet as historical person or literary character. Fourteen papers representing studies on more general aspects of prophecy in general (Fenton's Israelite Prophecy), specific books (Collins's Threading in Amos), and small units (Dijkstra on Amos 7:9-17 or Spronk on Judges 4:4-5) are collected in this volume. It is difficult to make a generalized assessment with such a diverse group of essays. In general the discussions represent recent movements away from a historical understanding of the text to the position that it is later redacted literature. The prophets as persons are only a weak consideration in these essays. Such persons, if historical, are well hidden behind the literature created about them. When the prophet is considered a historical figure it is mostly because of a unique feature of the text that might be explained as stemming from an original thinker, like the confessions of Jeremiah or Amos's moment of confrontation with Amaziah. Spronk's paper, for example, holds to the authentic placement of Judges 4:4-5 (describing the prophetess Deborah) but deconstructs Deborah from the named wife, judge, and prophetess to an anonymous necromancer working out of the tomb of Rebecca, Deborah's nurse. A number, but not all, support Auld's thesis that Israel's prophets were poets (not prophets) with features, like the title (nab'i) being added later. I found Fenton's article on "Israelite Prophecy..." and Dijkstra's contribution, which concentrates on Amos 7 but expands to address hermeneutical concerns, to be more informative than many of the others. I would consider this to be one of the more disappointing collections to be published in recent times. In general, the articles express the author's presuppositions more than advances on the biblical text.

Ballet & Modern Dance: A Concise History

This 1987 book of essays captures some of the clearest, most insightful, least pretentious dance writing around. Culled from Dance Magazine, the New York Times Ballet Review, Dancing Times, and other publications, these essays (originally published as reviews) serve as a guidebook through the world of late 20th-century dance, in form ("Patterns and Spinning Are Only a Part of It"), in trends ("The Rise of the Male Ensemble"), and especially in personalities ("Some Personal Grumbles About Martha Graham"). Jack Anderson does what few dance writers are able to do: in jargon-free language he describes the intellectual content of modern dance, as well as how the body moves through space and how it can communicate emotions beyond the power of speech.
