A Recreation of Urban History.......2007-09-19

Barmi is an imaginary city, but it is typical of many smaller cities in the northern Mediterranean. This book recreates the history of the city from its earliest settlement through today, in stages that clearly illustrate how the past of a city remains imprinted in its later forms. The book was evidently intended to help European high schoolers understand their own cities; but the drawings are so lavish and intricate that they have instant appeal to any reader. It's easy to become lost in the back alleys of Barmi at some point in its history, or to follow a detail (a Roman amphitheater gradually converted into an oval Baroque piazza) through its architectural development over a long period of time. This and the other volumes in the series are one of the best introductions I know to the study of urban geography, especially in cities with a history stretching over millennia. Highly recommended!

This book strikes me (maybe that description is too harsh for such a book) as an informative, healing, and spiritually-thoughtful book. I felt like I was being wrapped in a glowy, enveloping, surrogate home every time I picked it up, which is more often now since I seek more comfort these days in our insecure world. The writer chronicles each month of the year in terms of gardening, so that you are doing something garden-related, even in the Winter months, when most of us are just pipe-dreaming of the first sprout of the year. There are so many ideas and so many questions the writer poses to you, many involving your inner self, that it will take some time to process it all. Luckily, you can work on these questions monthly, and pick and choose whichever month of the year you want to pore over (I couldn't resist). There are also sonnets and other literary entries by various writers, which will surely make you ponder or simply smile. This book made me take notice of all the life around me, down to the grass growing outside, and to live more in the season and the moment. You may be inspired or spurred to take action once reading this delightful book, and don't be fooled by its docile, calming nature. Great change can spring forth from such quiet contemplation. I have begun to live this truth. Maybe it will help you live a more healthy, vivacious and thoughtful life, or maybe it will just bring you home. Either way, it will certainly help you create change within yourself and your life. I think in just the small excerpts I would read at times, I would gleen some replenishing freedom for my oft-parched soul, and it is sometimes just what I needed. I hope you, too, find some freedom in just such a book. Ultimately, this is a useful book that was written to guide you through your spiritual growth AND your gardening (it doesn't get much better than that) in a way that a gardener can understand and relate to, to the molten, stormy core. I must say that there are many things in this book which I did not mention, as I am sure you will find them yourself, with your own unique perspective. I thought I found this book; but truly, this book found ME.

AN EXCELLENT GUIDE TO THE PROPER CARE OF VINTAGE GARMENTS.......2001-11-10

Don't let the small size of this book fool you! It is filled with excellent instructions on how to care for vintage clothing, properly. I'm guessing most readers will be as surprised as I was by the items that actually harm our precious clothes. My entire closet is set up incorrectly. Now I know why the items I was using to protect my clothing were actually harming them.

I love the way this book feels to the touch. The paper on which it is printed glided through my fingers as I was reading it. The photos are crisp. I contacted one of the suppliers of acid-free products from the list in the back of the book. They have an excellent website and reasonable prices on products I could not find locally.

This book is a joy! If you are stricken by the incurable disease of collecting, you will love having this book on your shelf and refer back to it often. Entertaining and inspirational, and very well photographed.

This subject is limitless, and in fact there are an endless number of books on the subject. This book is a brief but beautiful approach to give an overview. To a modest collector it does a good job of covering what can ce collected,why collections are made and the things to consider when deciding how and where to diplay them.
It is of very large, high quality (10" X 13") book with many excellent color photographs and makes a fine coffee table book. The photos are almost all of high end to museum type collections. That, however; does not suggest that the same principles cannot be used in displaying personal collections of moderate objects. The one thing you won't find in the book is anything about how to go about assembling a collection.
You will find some very imaginative ideas in displaying collections of a small number,a large number and even mixing very different objects.
Probably the strongest part of the book is in how it shows how importrant the lighting of the collection really is.It has pictures showing the same objects displayed with different lighting; and the differences are startling. At the back of the book, you will find an extensive list of sources and suppliers;conservation organizations,conservation references,consrvators and restorers,suppliers of display units,materials,installers, framers and security.There is also a list of books the authors used as references in writing the book.
A delightful book by anyone who has a collection or just enjoys looking a one.

This book really helped me to becoming more drawn to BeanieBabies. My love for them has skyrocketted as this new book helped mekeep track of the beenies that I own. The only downside to the book is the lack of Beenie spaces, 120 isn't that many. Otherwise irt keeps you busy having fun with your collection.
