Customer Reviews:
The only book I needed!.......2007-07-15
This book was my bible for the trip I took to Paris. The pages are so worn and dog-eared and wine-stained, it makes me laugh to look at it. Indispensable if you're making up your own funky itinerary (on a budget!) and looking for your own experience of Paris outside of guided tours and bus trips.
Let's Go...to the bookstore and buy another guide book!.......2007-06-22
I had used one of the "Let's Go" books on a previous trip to Europe (in 2000) and remembered it being informative and helpful for youngish people traveling on a budget, so after quickly looking through guide books at the bookstore I decided to give Let's Go Paris 2007 a shot for my trip to Paris this summer. I soon regretted that decision. Here are my top complaints:
-In general, the information is disjointed and poorly organized. Food, Sights, Museums, Entertainment, Nightlife, Shopping, etc. all have their own categories, which is not helpful when you're in one area, trying to find multiple things to do. I was constantly flipping back and forth between the many sections, and it wasn't always clear where to look. For example, is "Invalides" a "sight" or a "museum"? What about the Pasteur Institute? And where can I eat nearby? Are there other attractions worth visiting near here? Flip, flip, flip. Also, the maps (more on those shortly) are all in the back, in the index. What I wished for, while standing on the street corner trying to hold five pages at once while my husband plotted things on the map (in the Index!), was an all-inclusive section for each arrondissement, with the map of that arrondissement in that section. Another reviewer mentioned that this problem was resolved in the 2007 edition, but my copyright date reads 2007 and the subdivision pest lives on.
-The maps themselves are terrible. They're small, and not in chronological order by arrondissement (it breaks down after the eighth when they go 9th & 18th, 10th, 12th, 11th, 13th, 15th, 14th, 16th, 17th, 19th, 20th), and the map of the 15th was so tiny it was practically useless. On the map of the 20th it actually says, "See Père Lachaise map p. XXX." The page number is listed as XXX. Unbelievable. I was so frustrated that I almost purchased a "Paris Pratique" while I was there.
-At least one restaurant reviewed ("Le 36" in the 8th) did not exist once we walked 45 minutes to get there. That was unpleasant.
-Almost all listed admissions prices were wrong. If it said 6,50 E, we just counted on it being 7,50. It said a carnet of 10 Metro tickets was 9,60. It was 10,80. Again, this was issued in 2007.
-There are things listed in the book that are not in the Index (so it's almost impossible to find them again if you haven't marked the page) and things in the Index that are not in the book.
-While I found the cultural information and historical sections in the beginning to be generally interesting and useful, I was annoyed when trying to figure out postage rates and found the following on p. 48 "...the standard postage system whose rates are listed below," but there was nothing listed below. My husband and I read and reread the section, baffled, and there were no postage rates listed anywhere.
After a week, this book became that unreliable friend that you can no longer trust so you just stop trying. We resorted to looking up restaurants, maps, and attractions on the Internet, but not everyone visiting Paris has easy access to an Internet connection. I'm giving it 2 stars only because some of the information was helpful, but I would strongly advise looking into another guide book. I will not purchase any Let's Go publications again. Ever.
GREAT BOOK.......2007-04-20
Let's Go Paris 2007 offers a wealth of information! It is easy to use, organized well, and focuses on budget traveling. I found my hotel in the 5eme for only 65 euros a night - thanks Let's Go! It also outlines dangerous areas in Paris, cheap places to drink, and describes sights and musuem by neighborhoods. The maps are great as well. I found it much more useful than Lonely Planet France or Frommer's Paris for budget traveling.
The new edition is GREAT!!!.......2006-11-15
Hey, all,
So, I agree completely with everyone's cranky reviews of Let's Go: Paris 05. As it turns out, they've completely redone quite a bit for the 07 edition, and I found it quite accessible and useful. They've totally reorganized the Entertainment, Food, and Nightlife sections so that they're all by arrondissement: no more of the idiotic subdivisions. Plus, all the information in the chapter is in a handy table on each chapter's opening page, so you can really do a fast find if you need to.
Plus, the maps have improved tenfold. They've got the "Paris by Arrondissement" map as well as a map that breaks the city down into cultural areas, and ones that highlight suggested itineraries.
Bottom line: 07 is incredible. I've seen Lonely Planet, Frommers, etc., and LG is the way to go.
Don't believe the un-hype.......2005-08-30
Hey, I found this book really useful as a complement to Rick Steves book - you need both. The maps in the back were fantastic and accurate; the listings (unlike other books) were by arrondissement, which is really helpful, and it had great patisserie/boulangerie recommendations. Get both books.

American Vision, Study Guide - Great Help!!.......2007-03-15
My son is learning disabled, and we recently purchased this study guide. It's too bad that the school doesn't tell parents that this product is available. It would have helped immensely earlier in the year! It condenses the chapters and explains the highlighted words. We have found it to be most helpful. Thanks.

Customer Reviews:
Early American Crewel Design.......2005-11-27
This 48 page soft cover book offers a brief but concise introduction of early American crewel work. The designs in the book are actual designs from early American textile works.
Although the designs are real, the textiles they are from are not referenced, which is the only negative within the book.
The images are easy to duplicate since they are large and are mostly on one page each. No color choices are offered but intermediate embroiderers can easily chose what colors will work best. This is a must have for a reenactor's reference library.
Pretty patterns.......2001-09-02
I really like the patterns in this book. I love the colonial look, well duh, it's a colonial craft... I also use the patterns on background pages in my scrapbook. I just stich them right onto plain cardstock (poke small holes with an exacto knife). Very nice book, I wish there were a bit about the history of American crewel.
Crewelwork designs.......2000-04-11
I found "Early American Crewel Design" to be a very good pictorial resource. It did not contain a lot about the history of crewelwork, or any references for the sources of the various designs for history buffs or reenactors. But, if you are looking for inspiration or traditional American designs, this is a good basic design book.

Buy it for the photos, not for the content........2001-09-20
All of Kelsey-Woods' books have terrific photos, but poorly organized and often inaccurate information. Sections on hedgehog diet recommend foods that are high in fat, low in protein -- exactly the opposite of what a hedgehog needs. He also recommends the use of gloves while handling hedgehogs -- a true no-no if you ever expect your pet to bond with you. The habitats shown in the book are not large enough for an active hedgehog.
This book is widely distributed, and I am sad every time I see it displayed in a bookstore. Hedgehogs all over the country are receiving sub-standard care because of this book.
Informative with lots of beautiful photographs.......2000-03-02
My daughter just bought her first hedgehog as a pet. Although she researched hedgehogs before deciding to buy one, she was able to learn some important facts of which she was unaware. This book contains exquisite photographs and stresses the importance of selecting a hedgehog of good health and temperament. It is a good source of information for those who are new to hedgehogs, yet find them totally irresistable. We have all fallen in love with this new prickly family member

I especially love the journal provided throughout the book. By journaling facts about my own garden, the book has become my own personal gardening guide. Book Description
This volume presents four early works by Vives: De initiis sectis et laudibus philisophiae (On the Origins, Schools and Merits of Philosophy); Veritas fucata (Painted Truth); Anima senis (the Soul of an Old Man); and Pompeius fugiens (Pompey in Flight). In each case the Latin text is accompanied by an English translation. The main aim of the editors has been to provide for the first time critical editions of the texts. The texts published here were included by Vives in the volume of collected essays which appeared in 1519 in Louvain under the title Opuscula varia. The text published at that time has also become the textus receptus. Variants are, of course, included in the critical apparatus. The apparatus fontium gives us an insight into Vives as a humanist. To the English translation are appended a small number of explanatory notes. Finally, there are these three indices: an index nominum (with reference in each to an encyclopaedia article which contains the bibliography forming the basis), an index locorum, and an index verborum memorabilium (which indicates deviations from Classical Latin forms). This volume is the first in a planned series of Selected Works which will follow the same concept.

Book Description
As his stories unfold, Daniel Dancer reflects on spirituality, indigenous knowledge, quantum physics, psychology, and ecological principles. Humor, synchronicity, delight, and heartfelt struggle are all present in these tales. The result is a breath of wholeness, a gift for our apocalyptic times and for a culture that has forgotten its connection to nature.
The sacred, magical role that art has held in everyday life since the dawn of humanity is often lost in modern society. Dancer's timely work is a quest to revive this form of art, weaving the shards of our failing culture and fragmented ecosystems into a celebration of possibility. Entertaining, full of surprise at every turn, and beautifully illustrated, Shards & Circles helps map the way home to our authentic selves.
Customer Reviews:
wisdom and inspiration from wild nature.......2007-08-26
A view of the world in alignment. For those who have always felt at odds with this culture, and this place in time, who see the world through different eyes.
Daniel Dancer has so beautifully articulated so many of my own thoughts and perceptions. If you are a lover of beauty and life, and you feel connected deep down to the rhythms and patterns of the natural world, you will feel the same way. As I read, I kept having this feeling that we were of one mind. Page after page, Dancers words triggered sacred memories of deep impressions that live inside me, from my own experiences. It's comforting to know that there is someone else who sees and feels the world the way I do. Dancer is possessed of a rare strength of spirit, and a huge loving heart. In this book, he shares his soul, and the depths of his insight with the world.
The work he is doing, is an elegant merging of awakening consciousness, creating real community, and Art-making, all in the context of a humble reverence for nature.
Simply put . . . well, it's brilliant
in deep respect, dancingwater (artist/ educator)
Desperate Prayers of beauty.......2007-04-20
This book changed my life.
I read it nearly 3 years ago and still it is impacting me. Page by glorious page, insights flooded me and tears welled in my eyes over and over. I was astounded at what I was reading...the earthy brilliance and heartful awareness that was given as beauty to the unsuspecting and open mouths of the spiritually hungry. Most certainly this author must be gifted, to have his feet rooted so sweetly in this wild earth while still capable to having the vast perspective of a soaring bird. This is rare.
Something spilled from this book into me, telling a story beneath the stories, which, in themselves were mind-opening and beauty provoking. What I heard underneath it all was a story of a man curious enough in mystery and keen in his vision to dive into a world seldom seen...a world that is calling desperately for our attention now...an invisible, Holy world that feeds on beauty, ceremony and tears. To allow this powerful understanding in, opens hearts and breaks into long held patterning. It can change the world. I am forever grateful that this book is here to feed us through perilous times with it's luscious and cohesive expanse.
Immersion in Ecopsychology.......2006-02-09
Anyone who has been moved by David Abram's "Spell of the Sensuous," is sure to feel the same about this gem by environmental artist Daniel Dancer. Here ecopsychology is demonstrated - vividly, authentically - rather than simply being talked about. Dancer's stories of immersing himself in landscapes, and then assembling found objects into art forms as gifts, as expressions, as spontaneous shamanic undertakings invites readers to reflect not only on their own ways of communing with the vibrancy and brokenness of the natural world but also of how we all can deepen the ways in which we open our hearts to the healing powers of nature.
It has been several months since I read "Shards and Circles", and yet without even opening the book, powerful images come to mind - vignettes of stories I shall never forget. I remember how, in contrast to Dancer's usual style of composing his art in the same episode in which his encounter with objects begins, one story reveals that it took him several years of returning to a particular place before he was moved to express a resolution to the mystery initially posed to him by a half-burned shard of paper. The psychological cleansing that came for him by waiting was powerful and suggests to me possibilities for my own recurring visits to special spots.
I was brought to tears by a chapter in which the power of place and simple acts of releasing feathers with his young children in a ritualistic manner gave Dancer a chance to transform the pain of divorce and home-leaving into an intimate moment of wonder and bonding that his children, surely, will never forget.
Finally, I applaud the author for presenting his stories so truthfully that even his mis-steps became learning experiences for this reader. Sparely, beautifully written, Daniel Dancer's words are windows of possibility for wounded souls in a wounded world.
Damaged Wilderness Transformed to Sacred Art.......2006-01-26
Daniel Dancer gives a revolutionary new meaning to both art and ecology, and he does so by melding the two in a way that is inviting, thought-provoking, consciousness-raising, and inspiring. A photographer who has documented many endangered lands, he seeks out the wounded places on the earth. In clearcut forests, beaches clogged with litter, a stretch of the Columbia River that faces the Hanford Nuclear Plant, and other places, he gathers waste left by human presence and recreates it, then and there, as art. His book, written with humor and playfulness, a naturalist's attention to detail and a philosopher's sense of the broader picture, tells the stories of these places and the works that arose from them.
Like the artist Andy Goldsworthy, Daniel Dancer's work uses the elements of a place and arranges them in the context of that place. Both make three-dimensional art that is meant to be ephemeral. Ultimately, however, Goldsworthy's pieces are exquisite creations that are only about themselves. Dancer's work, on the other hand, springs not only from a particular place but also from the ways that humans have interacted with that place. These fascinating works involve the artist himself and us, the witnesses/readers not only in the sorrowful reality of What Is, but in the attitude that transformation is possible. They invite us to bring attentive presence to beautiful, damaged places and to find what is sacred and meaningful everywhere.

Book Description
Here is a snapshot of Australia as it once was, of old gold town Ballarat during the second world war occupation by American troops. There are shades of All Creatures Great and Small as a vet and his son travel the country together, but this childhood story grows and matures into a haunting spiritual journey. Bary Dowling is a reviewer, nature writer and travel writer who has been a farmer and gardener for most of his working life.

A book worth reading.......2000-05-20
Mudeye is a about a group of school children growing up in a higher class society. The focus is mainly on 6 children that attend the St Christophers School. The storyline isn't extremly interesting but the book is still worth reading.
