Horses of the bygone Circus World........2007-05-20
I became aware of this book some years ago but was unable to locate a copy since it was out of print. How I would have loved to have "run away to the circus" in those bygone days. I'm a percheron breeder and love the action and drama of big teams in action.
This book is a great cronicle of the days that we'll never see again of how the horse helped develope the U.S. as we know it today. These horses were as crucial as the ones used to spread the settlers west in the building of American. Each era has it's horse heros and this book shows the heros of the Circuses.

Customer Reviews:
Awesome book, but prior to hurricane.......2007-08-10
For basics that will never change, short of a mass destruction of the entire Yucatan, this book is fantastic. I've used and abused this book for 3 trips to the region. With the bus schedules, the bus routes, the ways to do tours on your own for practically pennies compared to the formal over priced tours, this book easily paid for itself in the first day trip we ventured out on. Great background info on the region and history, things to do, places to eat, places to stay... a wealth of good info. I will definitely buy the next edition when it's updated.
Great travel companion.......2007-03-22
Hands down the best guidebook to the Yucatan. Great suggestions for restaurants and hotels, great driving directions, and accuracy in even the little details. We followed the recommendations and were rarely disappointed. The only thing it was dead wrong on was the restaurant suggestions in Isla Mujeres. We used it to drive all over the northern Yucatan, small towns, ruins, ceynotes, etc. and we loved the personality and opinions of the writers.
Not bad, but.........2006-12-21
The main problem I had with this book is the uneven coverage of regions. Other than the city of Villahermosa, the state of Tabasco is barely covered. The authors write that there is not much there. Not true! Go ahead and "google" Tabasco or look at the State of Tabasco's official website and you will see that there are many wonderful off the beaten track places to visit in Tabasco. It's as if the authors just didn't bother to do in depth research of the area. Another example is Chiapas. The most touristed areas are covered well, but the coastal region and other remote areas like the incredibly beautiful Lago Miramar are barely if at all mentioned. The heavily touristed coast between Cancun and Tulum is covered fairly well, but even here there are some areas more focused on than others. The tourist village of Akumal, for example, is not well covered. A better job also could have been done on Sian Ka'an. I also would like to see more hotels and restaurants listed. I realize that every place on the peninsula cannot be listed, but they barely scratch the surface.
I thought that a guide book covering just one region of Mexico was supposed to be more focused and detailed than a "whole country" book. While the book does this at times, it does the complete opposite at other times. Bottom line is that there is room for improvement. Maybe it is just a matter of the authors gaining more experience traveling the region. To end on a positive note, I did like the coverage of the state of Yucatan.
Useful and practical, but turn elsewhere for authoritative facts about decapitation.......2006-11-06
On a recent vacation, we took both Moon Handbooks Yucatan Peninsula (2005) and The Rough Guide to the Yucatan (2005). I was glad we brought both books, but overall I found the Moon book more useful for the small practical details.
For instance, we rented a car and drove from Merida toward Tulum (south of Cancun). This route offered a couple options: the free highway or the toll highway. We stopped in Valladolid and were trying to get back on the *toll* highway. The Rough Guide map of Valladolid just shows an arrow east labeled "Cancun". The Moon Handbook map reveals that east lies the *free* highway to Cancun, but you head *north* to reach the toll highway. This sort of detail can save a lot of frustration and stressful driving around.
Another example - in Tulum we were looking for a hotel on the beach. The Rough Guide had a detailed description of how to reach the beach hotels from the town center, but it contained directions like "Coming in from the north... another kilometre south along the highway is the beginning of the town proper...Most of the local accommodation, however, is a few kilometres east, right on the beach - all of it connected by a narrow road running north-south along the water..." etc. This was frustrating because I wasn't always sure which compass direction we were facing while we drove around. The Moon book, instead of paragraphs of text, had a much more helpful and practical map showing the beach hotel zone in relation to the town center.
On the other hand, the Rough Guide seemed more rigorous and reliable in terms of historical accuracy. For instance, take the ball court at Chichen Itza, with its murals of beheaded players. Apparently, historians aren't 100% sure whether it was the winners or the losers who got decapitated. The Rough Guide mentions this but the Moon book simply states that it was the losers. It bothered me that the Moon book seemed a little sloppy with history sometimes.
For vegetarians, the Rough Guide was more helpful in mentioning restaurants with vegetarian options.
Overall, the Rough Guide and the Moon Handbook complemented each other well and I'm glad we had both. I thought the Moon book was slightly more useful and practical with better maps, but the Rough Guide seemed more trustworthy for historical facts.
Best Yucatan Guidebook.......2006-05-09
I bought the Moon Cancun & Cozumel for a family trip to Cancun, and got this one for traveling on my own later. I loved the Cancun book, and was equally impressed with this one. The depth is amazing - the authors seemed to go everywhere (including Chiapas, which isn't really part of the Yucatan but still fascinating). I had planned to get the Lonely Planet guide, but it's puny compared to this one and is three years old (but it costs the same!). The Moon book covers all budgets - I mostly stay at mid-range places, but talked to backpackers and high-end using the same book and they seemed equally happy. I also liked the authors' writing, unlike the cookie-cutter books you sometimes get. The background/informational sections were detailed and well-written, and they throw in enough humor thoughout to keep it interesting. Moon isn't well-known, but this is really a top-notch book.

Another jewel by Moon.......2003-04-16
I have come to rely on the quality, detail and accuracy of Moon's guidebooks. They have added to my enjoyment of vacations for years. This book is no exception. It provides meaningful information on in-town attractions and out-of-the-way destinations alike. A must for anyone visiting the Yucatan!
Worst guidebook I have ever read.......2003-03-04
This is possbily the worst guidebook of any kind I have ever read. Loaded with meaningless phrases such as "Nighttime activities are not to be missed," and other high-school-yearbook-type observations, it is absloute torture to ferret out any helpful information buried in the inane prose.

A Classic and Still Great!.......1999-07-17
I loved the first edition of this book, and it was a ground-breaking travel effort--the first comprehensive guidebook to the Yucatan area. It still holds up today, but there are several other guides that are just as good. I especially enjoy Chicki Mallan's down-to-earth style and her way of highlighting worthy locally-owned businesses that we might not otherwise know about. For example, she gives information on small hotels in Izamal, and there's a new ecotourism project in the Xpujil area.

Outstanding, all you need........1997-07-29
I carried this book as my bible for my first trip to Mexico. I couldn't imagine needing any other resource, it was so complete. What I liked best was that the author consistently provided enough information and description for the traveller to make his/her own decisions on what they wanted to get out of their trip, without imparting too much of her own opinions (compared to, say, Lonely Planet books). For example, by reading the guide I was able to determine that Playa del Carmen would probably be a good "home base" for my wife and I, and after visiting most of the towns and islands along the coast I realized that we made the right decision. The author obviously has intimate knowledge of the area, as opposed to someone who may have spent a few months there. In addition, the maps were complete enough so that we did not have to buy any additional maps, and the book travelled very well due to the compact design and tough outer cover (you may find this to be a minor point until you've trashed a few books in the course of your journeying.

A History Lover's Delight!.......2005-05-26
This is one of the best books by Ms Grafton. The images are colorful, sharp, and clear. Ms Grafton provides authentic advertisements from the turn-of-the-century, as well as furniture, cars, luggage, and cigar ads. Many of the graphics are old photographs. This decoupage book is simply beautiful and very useful, also containing the old stand-bys such as holidays, butterflies and flowers. Highly recommended!
Pink of Perfection.......2001-04-21
These quaint old victorian vignettes in bright colors are perfect for collages and scrap books. Victorian era lovers, this is for you!

Another wonderful Rodale book.......2004-04-24
Being a novice gardener, I am sometimes intimidated by gardening books. I have checked out several Rodale books at my local library and have found this one to be another winner. It's easy to read and loaded with useful tips and ideas, some so simple that I wonder how come I didn't think of that myself! Others I think "Wow! What a cool idea". I've got plans to utilize many of them this year. I'd recommend this book for just about anyone, especially a new gardener. This is another one I'm adding to my wish list.
A great book for the adventurous gardener!.......1999-11-06
As a beginning gardener myself, I found this book to be quite fascinating. I wanted to utilize all these tips because I had most of the materials at home! It was a very easy book to read, and I thank the author for gracing us with these tips.
The best garden common sense book I've read!.......1999-08-28
Common Sense, that is what we really want to use and 1001 Ingenious Gardening Ideas gets us going. Let's use what we all stash in the garage, lamp shades, newspapers, plastic bottles, old plastic pots. This book is so easy to read, and to re-read. I don't know how I got along without it all these years. I can't wait for the next 1001 suggestions.
very helpful! full of great ideas........1999-08-02
I thumbed through this book at my mom's house and knew I wanted to buy it. It's full of helpful hints and great ideas. It's very interesting!

It's not just silverchair............2001-01-18
This is one of the most laid back, comical and most well researched books I have ever seen on three of Australians most well loved bands. It gives an outsiders view of the inside of being a "Rockstar" but follows the section of each bands lives carefully and Mathieson manages to portray them in a complete light: not just the cahsrts and music scene but also the relationships that must go onto support the bands. It details how long silverchair have been "mates", how Janet English, of spiderbait, longed to get out of their small town and see the world and of Tim Rogers (you am i) watching the world go by. Beautifully detailed it shows how human each band is. My favourite passage is the end of Spiderbait when Kram takes over the narritive. A true treat not only for Aussie's but for music lovers of all kinds......
Is It Worth Your Money ( read this before you buy it).......2000-06-08
I am a huge fan of silverchair, i am in their fan club have their autograph and have been to their concerts. Now dont get me wrong this book is cool, but wasn't very well written and didn't explain much. If you want some silverchair stuff, subscribe to their fanclub and you get free stuff catalogues and more. You can subscribe by mail and to figure out how go to chairpage.com which is their official web page

It gives you insight on some cool stuff that you might've not known. If you're a big fan of silverchair, like I am, then I would most definitely recommend purchasing this book.
