Black boards, color pictorial jacket. Profusely illustrated. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
Book Description
Despite all the concrete and crowds, Tokyo can be a great place for kids. Scores of parks, museums, and imaginative play spots dot the city, at prices that won't send parents into sticker shock. But for newcomers to Tokyo's bewildering urban sprawl, these hidden gems can be hard to find.
Kids' Trips in Tokyo is the answer to every foreign parent's prayers. No Disneyland or Tokyo Tower here-each chapter is a full day's outing that might include anything from a tour through a samurai mansion to an ice cream treat made fresh at a working dairy. Kid-tested and parent-approved, every
tour includes complete information on transportation, eating options, schedules, and pit stops.
It's a sampling of the very best Tokyo has to offer young minds and active bodies, with sensitive attention paid to the complications posed by language and culture barriers. From interactive exhibits that teach kids about Tokyo's history to wildlife sanctuaries that will let them escape the city
altogether, Kids' Trips is a treasure trove of creative ideas for parents to enjoy with their children ... or even without.
Customer Reviews:
I spent last summer in Japan ........2002-08-14
Last summer, I stayed with relatives who were living in Japan. We used this book a lot for sightseeing and it lists huge parks. There are really, really, beautiful gardens in Japan, and as a 16-year old guy I usually don't pay much attention to gardens. My cousin lived in Tokyo for several years and swears by this book. One recommendation: skip the raw fish.
Depends on Your Kids.......2001-12-15
The book was well organized, but if one's children are active boys between the ages of 5 and 11, then this book is probably not for you. Although there were a few exceptions, I found that the book was filled with museums, which may be interesting, but did not seem too exciting upon reading. I also ordered with this book, "Tokyo for Free" and "Little Adventures in Tokyo". Between these two books and a good guide book, everything in this book was covered with the advantage that there were things in these other books that seemed like alot more fun. Depends on your kids.
This book is unbelievably great.......2000-01-14
We got this book right before moving to Tokyo for a year with our two year old daughter. We haven't been steered wrong yet - each of the tours or trips in the book we have tried so far has been a delight for us and our daughter. If you have a kid in Tokyo, you *need* this book.
Highlights so far have been the Kodomo no Kuni dairy farm/park in Kanagawa, the parks and streetcar line in Arakawa, the park and community center in Kichijoji.

Book Description
"Cornhusk bag" is the popular name for a distinctive type of handwoven bag made by the Indian women of the Columbia and Snake River Plateau. Once a thriving craft, the weaving of cornhusk bags had almost disappeared by the middle of the twentieth century, and it has been only within the last few years that the tradition was revived by the Indians in an effort to preserve an awareness of their cultural heritage. Drawn from the resources of the Eastern Washington State Historical Society, this collection of 170 bags is a representative display of the variety of designs that characterize this native craft tradition. No two patterns are the same—they are improvised as the bags are woven—and each weaver relies on an intuitive sense of pattern and color in creating the designs which are integrated with a keen sense of awareness of traditional forms. In these fiche, both sides of each bag are shown to demonstrate the different but complementary nature of the designs. The accompanying text provides detailed information on the materials, dyes, and the weaving techniques of "twining" and "false embroidery" used in the composition of these cornhusk bags.

Excellent overview of Western Native American life........2000-01-10
This covers the early inhabitants of Eastern California, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Western Washington, Eastern Whyoming, Eastern Montana, and Northern Arizona. It has color and black and white photos on almost every page. It describes theories on the arrival of humans, the environment in the stone age, hunting techniques and tool use. There are sections on shelters, clothing, food types, and cultural practices. Of course, no book about Native Americans could be complete without a section about the arrival of the White man and the changes it caused, so this too has a section for this purpose. This would make a wonderful addition to any home or grade school library, and is a good read for anyone interested in Native American culture.

This book is a great resource for those who want to know and understand manatees. It has great information on manatee history and their habits. It contains good photos showing a variety of behaviors. The chapter depicting a ficionalized year in the life of a manatee is a great way to teach while telling an engaging story. Great discussion on conservation issues. The sirenians, as scientists call them, are familiar denizens of the world's subtropical waters, well known to visitors to the Red Sea, the Florida keys, and Australia. In ancient times, around the world, these creatures, the manatees and dugongs, were thought to bear a magical kinship to humans, giving rise to stories of mermaids and sirens. Surprisingly, writes marine biologist Jeff Ripple, little was known about the sirenians until the late 1940s, when Florida-based scientists began to study them closely. His book, well illustrated with large-format photographs by Doug Perrine, interprets these scientists' findings for a general audience. Ripple offers accounts of the behavior and life ways of the Trichechidae, the family that embraces the West Indian, Amazonian, and West African manatees, and of the Dugongidae, which includes the dugong and the now-extinct Steller's sea cow. He also describes conservation efforts that have been undertaken in recent years, with mixed results as populations of wild animals continue to decline around the world. To protect the remaining sirenians, Ripple writes, will require controversial measures, including restrictions on the development of waterfront land and on boating in manatee and dugong habitat. The time for such measures, he adds, is growing ever shorter. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
Manatees and Dugongs of the World is an excellent introduction to the natural history of the four living species of sirenian, including the Florida and Antillean subspecies of the West Indian manatee, the Amazonian manatee, the West African manatee, and the dugong, as well as the extinct Stellar’s Sea Cow. Also included is a discussion of conservation issues and an exploration of the sirenian in myth and tradition.
Customer Reviews:
great book!.......2007-01-04
This book has great pictures, good narrative and everything you would want in an educational book about manatees. It would be an excellent school or student resource, and is packed with lots of information and interesting facts. I recommend it for kids 8 and up to adults.
Most comprehensive book for the public.......2004-12-10
As a manatee scientist and co-founder of Sirenian International, Inc. (http://www.sirenian.org), I would rate this beautifully illustrated introduction to manatees and dugongs of the world as "the best choice" for all reading levels at or above high school. I have purchased the hardback edition and also sell the softcover edition in our giftshop. Although the book has full color, absolutely georgeous images on almost every page, it is also a comprehensive and complete introduction to the Order Sirenia, which is comprised on only 4 extant, and endangered species around the world.
Manatees are the best mammals.......2000-03-21
The Manatee and the Dugong are water mammals that spend there time eating marine grass and other water plants. They are similar in apearance but are quite different. Manatees are bigger and are found throughout the world. The Dugong is found in africa and is smaller and skinner. The two mammals are fun to learn about and have some cool things about them. They are both endangered and might go extinct in the next 5 to 10 yrs. In my opinion I think they are the best animals of the ocean.

Stunning and Comprehensive Guide to Mysterious Manatees.......2000-01-30
This is probably the most extensive work on the subject that will satisfy any level of interest from the browser to the academic. Not only are the photographs of luminous clarity, they capture defining moments in the manatees' life cycle. Even more unusual are the photographs of all the dugong species around the world, not only the ones found along the Florida coast. It is both a satisfying picture book for all ages as well as a useful reference work for anyone interested in this endangered marine mammal.

This is a very good book for someone interested in the biology, habitat & distribution of these endangered animals. Excellent illustrations & photographs. I highly recommend this book for someone who wants more than a field guide!
Only good for school projects.......1999-02-14
Manatees & Dugongs isn't something anyone would want to read in their spare time, but it was really useful on my manatee science project. Full of info and statistics, it's informative but of course quite boring. (Since it's a research book.) If you're doing a school project on manatees, read this book!

Book Description
During the 1990s there has been a tremendous surge of interest in football memorabilia, which has become one of the fastest growing areas in collectables.
Recent reports in the press read: 'Football collecting reaches fever pitch... keepsakes are big business.' (The Sunday Times) and 'What's interesting about soccer memorabilia, despite the huge increse in prices, is that investors have not come into the market. It's all genuine fans and enthusiasts.' (The New Statesman.)
This book comprises a fascinating collector's guide to soccer memorabilia, covering the sport from its formative years to the present day. All collecting fields are discussed and lavishly illustrated in colour throughout, showing the diversity of material that is available to collectors. The book also provides details of where soccer memorabilia can be seen and acquired, and from whom collectors can seek further information.

The editors of the Smith & Hawken catalog have put together an excellent introduction to the art, practice, and enjoyment of gardening that will be of use to experienced gardeners and novice tillers alike. Like the catalog from which it springs, the book sometimes manages to be trendy and breathlessly traditional at the same time. But the prose is lively, the illustrations exact, and the photographs pleasing, and the book will look as good on your coffee table as it will propped up next to your hydrangeas. On second thought, better get two: the hardback for the coffee table and the soft cover for the garden.
Book Description
From Smith & Hawken, and now with a striking new cover, here is a book that offers a distinctly American approach to the art, craft, and pastime of gardening. Embracing British perennial beds, French intensive techniques, antique roses, heirloom vegetables, alternative lawns, and a bedrock philosophy of working with-not against-the ecosystem, this illustrated organic gardener's bible includes a 350-entry color plant guide and is written for all North American regions and hardiness zones.
Readers will learn how to feed the dirt, achieve good tilth, create and use compost. How to plant in contours, manage water, plant outdoors. How to work with plants that not only come back every year, but bloom early and long, smell great, and even provide a pleasing silhouette in winter. There are sections on tools and gear, grooming and deadheading, winterizing and ornamenting the garden; digging and planting; propagating garden plants from seed; the secrets of maintenance. Selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club's Country Homes & Gardens Club, the Newbridge Garden Book Club, and the Rodale Book Club. Over 140,000 copies in print.
Customer Reviews:
Complete Reference for the Novice.......2003-12-13
I am new to gardening and have been looking for a comprehensive reference to getting started with gardening. This book has answered all my questions, including soil preparation, plant selection, necessary tools, planting, and how to tend the garden. It even has information on propagating, containers and furniture. I highly recommend this book to the beginning gardener.
Best for beginning gardeners, useful for experts.......2000-04-26
Gardening books for a broad audience are rarely successful. It's extremely difficult to present basic information for beginning gardeners that doesn't bore more experienced plantsmen to blindness. On the other hand, how many beginners have had to plod through chapters on advanced topics in so-called "general" gardening books - such as grafting rootstock or the family tree (no pun intended) of a minor succulent - just to find basic information on when to plant potatoes? And how often does one find right-way, wrong-way statements in basic gardening books that directly conflict with the statements made in the next book on the shelf, with no attempt to explain the rationale behind the recommendations?
Fortunately for all gardening addicts, Smith & Hawken's Book of Outdoor Gardening is the exception to the rule - at least the first half. Each chapter and sidebar successfully blends basic horticultural information with unique tips and techniques for the master gardener. This book is a handy reference tool for any gardener as he moves through the various stages of his craft. And where conflicting recommendations exist, the authors take time to explain how BOTH ideas are correct, but are dependent upon the circumstances. Good examples include the proper planting depth for roses, and the wisdom of using chemical fertilizers and soil amendments.
I've given this book 4 stars, for two reasons: First, as I've noted above, The Book of Outdoor Gardening is quite a worthwhile read for most gardeners. However, a novice would probably find it most useful, and for this audience the book should receive 5 stars. Expert gardeners will still find good information, but since this type of focused data can be found in specialty books, my rating for this audience would be 3 stars. Hence, a compromise 4 stars.
My second reason for giving 4 stars is the plant list that forms the second half of the book. This is a personal issue: in general, I find plant lists woefully incomplete and inadequate. In trying to please novice gardeners, who usually want information on traditional plants, and experts, who want detailed content regarding hard-to-find or hard-to-cultivate plants, the authors left out a number of important species in both categories. This is most likely due to space considerations; however, since purchasing the book - and using it frequently for the information in the first half - I've often had to refer to other books for plant information.
The Book of Outdoor Gardening.......2000-03-30
I found this book to be very helpful when setting up my landscaping at my new house. It was a useful guide in determining what plants would work for my area. The beautiful pictures were also great examples of what to expect.

Designed in an easy-to-handle, spiral-bound format, the book's 200 sequential color photos and clear, simple instructions allow both partners to follow, step-by-step, every aspect of each dance. A lively, accessible guide that will enable novice dancers of all ages to learn and practice in their own homes. Peggy Spencer's previous books include The Joy of Dancing, Formation Dancing and Medal Tests, and Come Dancing.
