BUY MAUI REVEALED INSTEAD.......2007-08-17
I bought both Maui for Dummies (Feb 2007 edition) and The Unofficial Guide to Maui (May 2007 edition) and my friend got a Maui Revealed book only and was MUCH MORE INFORMED than I was with my TWO books. I highly recommend either of these books (Maui for Dummies was the better of the two in my mind) but only AFTER you have already purchased Maui Revealed! Also, make sure you are always getting the newest edition on these books...it matters
nothing new here.......2003-05-30
After reading Frommers and Maui Revealed this book had nothing new to offer. A big disapointment. I left it in the hotel room.

Customer Reviews:
Well, No........2001-09-18
Although the book touts itself as giving readers "the inside story" on Hawaii--everything from shopping to volcanoes, from our experience there's no truly remarkable reporting. The descriptions are fairly accurate, albeit not over-critical, but I have to agree completely with the reviewer from LA who states that this is very much standard fare. Okay, so "Dr. Beach" says that such-and-such is one of the best 10 beaches in America, how is that "unofficial", and how does that reflect what the author thinks? Tominaga relies far too much on the offical line--publicity available in every hotel lobby about the attractions--and not enough on his own experience. Perhaps his comments on islands other than Oahu are more meaningful, but if you can get to Hawaii, a good concierge will do as much or more for you. There is so much more that Hawaii has to offer that isn't included here--probably a book isn't the best way to get this information anyway. On the positive side, the "Unofficial Guide" formula for rating things according to age group is very helpful.
What a disappointment!.......2000-07-15
Perhaps I was expecting too much from the title of this book. There is nothing "unofficial" about the information it contains. The hotel descriptions are very standard guidebook material - lots of facts, but not enough of a description to give you a feel of the properties. I have stayed at several of the properties listed in this book and they could have easily included some information that IMHO would have been crucial to your enjoyment. Also, very little information is provided on things to do on each island outside of the usual tourist attractions. Maybe I am being too harsh. After all, Frommers and Fodors aren't any better, but since this book is touting itself as the "unofficial guide", I feel that it's a bit of false advertising.
Best Hawaii Guidebook--Goodbye Fodor's, Frommer's, Etc........2000-06-28
Great organization to a potentially complex topic. Most comprehensive evaluations of hotels, restaurants, nightlife, beaches, and attractions of any of the usual guidebooks. Attraction evaluations and descriptions provide accurate age appeal breakouts to aid in evaluating attraction's overall family appeal. I love this series and rely on its accuracy. It rightfully leaves the other general Hawaii guidebooks in the dust. If you are going to buy one guidebook make it this one!

Brian Boru: Emperor of the Irish is a beautiful and compelling true story of Irish history.
Customer Reviews:
"Perhaps the only thing safe to love is the land itself.".......2005-01-30
Although this book was written for a younger audience,it is an excellent way to write history for a wide spectrum of readers. One reviewer suggests it might be a good version of the story of this important leader in Ireland and an incitement to read an extended version ; maybe so.So much history is written in a dry and difficult manner that many people get bored and turned off.History occured with passion and excitement and there is no reason that it should not be written the same way.Maybe history writers should take a lesson from Llywelyn.Llywelyn breathes life in this exciting story.I have two other books by this author,"1921" and "1949" that I am anxious to get into, and I'm a person who couldn't stand history as taught in school. This approach to writing history reminds me of Margaret Mitchell's "Gone With the Wind",John Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath" and Cecil Woodham-Smith's "The Great Hunger".Did any history books ever cover The Civil War,The Great Depression or The Irish Famine with as much passion? Obviously,I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
children's book.......2004-01-04
this is the children's version of "Lion of Ireland" which it is a good preview of, it is still a good book but leaves out a lot of details. If you liked this book but you want a more complete story read "Lion of Ireland"
well hung..........2003-10-14
this book was great at leaving out a lot of details. there was almost no description to what was happening. the book left a lot hanging or it was intended to let your imagination run wild with the book. i like imagining the characters and things but when almost the whole book is left up to my visual imagery in my head i really dont like that. the book was decent over all for like beginning readers but anyone with an iq over one would have enjoyed the world a little more well painted in thier head!
outstanding Piece of work.......2003-03-19
This book is one of the best I have ever read. It will keep you hooked all the way through. The best part was taking truth and turning it into something very exciting. This is coming from someone who doesn't like to read. Brain Boru Fought his way from nothing to high king gathering loyal followers form all parts of Ireland. Quit wasting time reading this and find a copy of the book.
A wonderful book that brings you back 1000 years in history........2000-12-14
Another wonderful book by Morgan Llywellyn.
This is a historically accurate novel that keeps you glued until the very end. I found myself transported to a time of medieval towns and kings. Brian Boru had me rooting for the Irish from start to finish!

101 Celtic Knotwork Designs (101 Celtic)
ASIN: 1861081154 |
Book Description
Designing Celtic knotwork patterns can be as easy as drawing hearts, loops, and lines on a graph. Traditional knotwork has long been a favorite source for crafters of all kinds, but they’ve always had to rely on ready-made images. This handbook changes that, because it teaches the essential elements of construction so that anyone can plot borders, motifs, animal figures, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Simple techniques, beautiful results.......2002-08-01
In the "Celtic Knotwork Handbook" Sheila Sturrock invites the beginner into the adventure of designing and constructing beautiful Celtic knotwork patterns. Don't be fooled by the simple techniques explained in the book. By first teaching how to plot basic patterns on a graph paper, she teaches the student the basic patterns and designs. From these basic beginnings the student then learns how to leverage those skills to create larger more complex patterns.
In a matter of about an hour I was able to design and draw basic patterns easily. By the next day I could design and produce much more complex patterns and was quite pleased with the results. An enjoyable book that teaches one of the easiest methods to learn and create Celtic knotwork, it is a valuable reference as well as just plain fun.
The Celtic Knotwork Handbook, a perfect book for beginers.......2002-07-10
If you are just getting started, or have been interested in knotwork for a while, this is a great book! It provides historical information, diagrams, how to make circular knots, anamorphics, and more than 100 original knots, which include corners, borders, and motifs. This is the best keltic knot book I've seen.
I guess they're cutting publishing costs........2000-09-16
I went to the store a few days ago to take a look at this book before I decided to buy it. When I found it I was a bit dissappointed in what I saw. It looks like the same book she made in 1998. It even uses the exact same cover only this time it is brown. Don't get me wrong, that is a great book and I use it all the time, but this book was about 2 inches X 2 inches smaller. I personally prefer the larger version which is 7 1/4 inches by 9 3/4 inches. If you don't mind the smaller size, it has been a wonderful reference. I also love how they illustrate both the two-dimensional line drawing and the final three-dimensional drawing side by side.
Celtic Knotwork Handbook.......2000-07-07
This book is an interesting beginning for those just starting out in celtic artwork. At first, the lack of detailed instructions is confusing, but once you get the hang of it, it is very simple. This book shows an interesting way of doing complicated knotwork.

Customer Reviews:
Could've Been Worse.......2005-09-27
I liked it but it's an introduction not a comprehensive, in-depth analysis regardless of what the title says. Beware of pretty covers and sugar coated words when buying books. As the one reviewer states "not accurate" but it's worth looking into if you're new to the muscle car genre.
OK.......2004-05-10
This book is alright. Although not entirely accurate, its OK for someone new to muscle cars. Most of the muscle cars are covered and all have descriptions of there different models. There is also a price guide in the back for those interested in specific models and years.
Informative..Yes. Accurate..No........2004-01-11
When one purchases a "Standard Guide", one would expect a thorough and accurate accounting of the subject. This book does not meet that minimum standard. The information provided as to model information is shoddy and poorly researched. Production numbers are inaccurate, photos are of poor quality and in some cases, identifying the wrong vehicle. One need not be a gearhead to identify or grasp the magnitude of the errors made in this reference guide. For example Steve McQueen DID NOT drive a Charger in "Bullitt". The lack of proofreading and research evident in this "Standard Guide" is an affront to educated automobile afficiandos everywhere.
A commendable effort.......2002-06-28
I too enjoyed the original print ads for a great many of the cars shown. And the information is generally reliable as well. Although one should keep an open mind. In the section covering the 1968 Dodge Charger R/T the editor states that this is the car driven by Steve McQueen in "Bullitt." This, of course, is not true as McQueen drove a Ford Mustang fastback; the mafia hitmen drove a black Charger 440 R/T.
Standard Guide to American Muscle Cars.......2001-12-31
Pretty good book in that it covers a lot of muscle cars and a long time span. I like the way the book uses many original ads and it is fairly complete in its coverage. I would like to see better pictures and more proofreading. I noticed that some of the information about certain cars is incorrect or transposed. It also appears that some of the picture captions are not associated with the proper picture.
Book Description
Ice storms in the South. Severe drought in the West and the East. Floods in the Midwest. Brutal, unpredictable weather conditions can devastate yards and gardens. Sadly, the information you find in most gardening books recommends plants with the assumption that the climate will be temperate all the time. But when bad things happen to good gardens, those gardening books aren't much help. Stepping into the breach is The Weather-Resilient Garden, a comprehensive one-of-a-kind, region-by-region reference on how to plan and grow a garden that will flourish in normal conditions and be hardy enough to survive and thrive despite drought, flood, high winds, and extreme hot or cold spells. As part of his "defensive gardening" approach, horticulturist Charles W. G. Smith provides an encyclopedic list of resilient plants, with specific advice for each region of the United States. And for gardeners who regard "hardy" as a synonym for "unattractive," be assured that the plants Smith recommends are as beautiful as they are resilient. Daylilies, for example, score 9.5 out of a possible 10 because they can withstand drought, cold, heat, salt, flooding, ice, snow, wind, and humidity. These lovely garden favorites even help control erosion. Almost as good is the rugosa rose, with a score of 9.0. This lovely, vigorous variety breaks the stereotype of roses as the prima donnas of the garden. The rugosa rose can bounce back from lightning, hail, even fire. Of course, sometimes weather is so violent that even the hardiest gardens are damaged. For those situations, Smith offers detailed problem-solving advice for every contingency--from something as simple as a tree that has lost a limb to a flooded lawn, from uprooted plants to damaged soil. He even explains what preventive measures you can take to minimize the damage when you know bad weather is on its way. Here, then, is a book that takes a two-fold approach to defending your garden. It teaches you how to outwit the weather by creating a resilient garden landscape before misfortune strikes. And it takes you step-by-step through the process of healing a badly damaged garden. The result is a garden that is every bit as beautiful as it is undaunted by anything the weather can throw at it.
Customer Reviews:
Top-notch information for novice and experienced alike.......2005-07-22
I picked this book up as we deal with the worst drought on record in the Chicagoland/Northern IL area--which is tough on gardeners even in the best years. Smith covers it all in an in-depth, very readable manner. For a newcomer to gardening (wherever you may live), there is plenty of information on specific conditions divided by chapter (ex.--heat, cold, drought, flood...whoops, we can have that all in one day around here!). You can turn to a section to find out how to deal with a situation immediately. There is also plenty of discussion on plants and types of plants suitable for a variety of locales. Not simply a weather-related tome, the author also sprinkles in good information on dealing with animal damage, providing habitats for birds, and lists (including a 100-plant glossary) of plants for specific conditions.
For experienced gardeners, there is excellent scientific information, historical discussions (no, Jethro Tull isn't simply Ian Anderson's band...), and techniques that may be new to you.
Good for browsing or curling up with by a toasty fire in the winter. Whether you need help now or want to learn more in general, this book will become a well-thumbed reference.
A great addition to your library.
How to organize a garden for inclement weather.......2004-06-07
From hail and ice to summer droughts, gardens can face daunting seasonal survival challenges. Enter gardening expert Charles Smith's Weather-resilient Garden: a "user friendly" guide to planting a garden tough enough to withstand almost any kind of weather change. Blend an encyclopedia of 100 hardy plants with expert advice on how to organize a garden for inclement weather and you have a solid key to a lasting, beautiful garden.

Description:
This paper analyses the relationship between the interannual variations of snow depth and snowmelt date and river discharge measurements in the Ob river basin. The snow parameters are derived from passive microwave remote sensing measurements by SSM/I during the time period 1989-2001. We find a significant correlation between the snowmelt date and the runoff in May (correlation coefficient R=-0.92) and between the winter snow depth and the runoff in June (R=0.61) measured at the Ob estuary. These results validate the methods used to derive the interannual variability of the snow parameters, particularly the snow depth. In such vast and remote regions, this is fundamental for monitoring and predicting snow related flood events. Furthermore, the results obtained can be very useful to improve the description of the snow-runoff relationship in global hydrological models.

Description:
A snow water equivalent (SWE) algorithm has been developed for thin and thick snow using both in situ microwave measurements and snow thermophysical properties, collected over landfast snow covered first-year sea ice during the Canadian Arctic Shelf Exchange Study (CASES) overwintering mission from December 2003 to May 2004. Results showed that the behavior of brightness temperatures (T"bs) in thin snow covers was very different from those in a thick snowpack. Microwave SWE retrievals using the combination of T"b 19 GHz and air temperature (multiple regression) over thick snow are quite accurate, and showed very good agreement with the physical data (R^2=0.94) especially during the cooling period (i.e., from freeze up to the minimum air temperature recorded) where the snow is dry and cold. Thin snow SWE predictions also showed fairly good agreement with field data (R^2=0.70) during the cold season. The differences between retrieved and in situ SWE for both thin and thick snow cover are mainly attributable to the variations in air temperature, snow wetness and spatial heterogeneity in snow thickness.

Description:
The Tropospheric Water Vapour and Stratospheric Ozone (TROPWA) project has measured ground-based stratospheric ozone by means of millimetre wave radiometry tuned at 142 GHz from 1993 to 2000 in Mendoza, Argentina. Additionally, tropospheric water vapour was measured using a 92-GHz radiometer. This paper presents the theoretical error analysis used to characterize the ozone instrument, and a comparative study of the retrieved profiles with the coincident measurements taken with different instruments. To evaluate and validate the retrieved stratospheric ozone profiles, we have used a set of ozone profiles measured with the Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE); while the water vapour data was calibrated against a set of 3-year-radiosounding-balloon data taken by the Argentine National Weather Service. This study also includes a comparison of individual ozone profiles measured using a second ground-based millimetre wave radiometer-spectrometer tuned at 276 GHz from the Max-Planck-Institut fur Aeronomie (MPAE), Germany. During this particular campaign carried out in November 1994, the ground-based measurements were contrasted with two space-born experiments: the Millimetre Wave Atmospheric Sounder (MAS), flown in the NASA-ATLAS 3 mission and the above-mentioned HALOE. From the error analysis and the comparison tests, it follows that between 20 to 40 km the TROPWA instrument is able to retrieve ozone profiles with absolute errors varying from 10% to 20%, relative errors less than 5%, and with a height resolution, calculated as full width at half maximum (FWHM), varying from 5 to 11 km depending on the altitude. The major discrepancies between the different set of profiles are about +8% to -10% (+0.4 to -0.8 ppmv), mainly due to the coarser height resolution of our instrument.

Description:
The monitoring of snow water equivalent (SWE) and snow depth (SD) in boreal forests is investigated by applying space-borne microwave radiometer data and synoptic snow depth observations. A novel assimilation technique based on (forward) modelling of observed brightness temperatures as a function of snow pack characteristics is introduced. The assimilation technique is a Bayesian approach that weighs the space-borne data and the reference field on SD interpolated from discrete synoptic observations with their estimated statistical accuracy. The results obtained using SSM/I and AMSR-E data for northern Eurasia and Finland indicate that the employment of space-borne data using the assimilation technique improves the SD and SWE retrieval accuracy when compared with the use of values interpolated from synoptic observations. Moreover, the assimilation technique is shown to reduce systematic SWE/SD estimation errors evident in the inversion of space-borne radiometer data.

Description:
One of the major challenges in determining snow depth (SD) from passive microwave measurements is to take into account the spatiotemporal variations of the snow grain size. Static algorithms based on a constant snow grain size cannot provide accurate estimates of snow pack thickness, particularly over large regions where the snow pack is subjected to big spatial temperature variations. A recent dynamic algorithm that accounts for the dependence of the microwave scattering on the snow grain size has been developed to estimate snow depth from the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) over the Northern Great Plains (NGP) in the US. In this paper, we develop a combined dynamic and static algorithm to estimate snow depth from 13 years of SSM/I observations over Central Siberia. This region is characterised by extremely cold surface air temperatures and by the presence of permafrost that significantly affects the ground temperature. The dynamic algorithm is implemented to take into account these effects and it yields accurate snow depths early in the winter, when thin snowpacks combine with cold air temperatures to generate rapid crystal growth. However, it is not applicable later in the winter when the grain size growth slows. Combining the dynamic algorithm to a static algorithm, with a temporally constant but spatially varying coefficient, we obtain reasonable snow depth estimates throughout the entire snow season. Validation is carried out by comparing the satellite snow depth monthly averages to monthly climatological data. We show that the location of the snow depth maxima and minima is improved when applying the combined algorithm, since its dynamic portion explicitly incorporate the thermal gradient through the snowpack. The results obtained are presented and evaluated for five different vegetation zones of Central Siberia. Comparison with in situ measurements is also shown and discussed.

Book Description
Good, singable music, of proper range, set to purposeful text, and of such character and construction as to inspire the average boy to eager effort in singing. The natural range of the average boy is rather limited, and the selections here have been arranged with this fact in mind.
Most of the selections are in two-part arrangement, and these, while primarily designed for boys, may with a few exceptions be used with equally good effect by girls' voices - soprano and alto.
The subjects - words and music - are throughout, cheerful, optimistic and healthful in tone.

Book Description
Early on in his backstage life he realized he was gay, and in due time accepted his being "different" readily enough to become as happy a homosexual as one is likely to encounter, even when he was involved in the grizzliest of gay activities, some of which are written about herein.
Having reached total blindness at about 65 years of age, he writes in third person: "There was a time when he did tap routines; now he taps down the street with his cane." He sings to himself: "Everybody loves a chorus boy. I used to be a twinkie. Everybody loves a chorus boy, But now I am a blinkie. Tap-tap-tap." And he ends his book with: "It's a sunny day with blue skies and birds twittering in the trees, and an old crone passes him and says he's not missing much. Bill smiles and continues to walk straight ahead."
