Book Description
There is increasing concern in the media, among politicians and within environmental organizations, about the effects of chemicals in our environment that affect the endocrine systems of wildlife and humans. At its simplest these are referred to as `gender-bending' chemicals or `environmental estrogens'. The chemicals in question (pesticides, PCBs, plasticizers, petrochemicals, and a variety of industrial chemicals) have been known to decrease human sperm counts, cause fish to `change sex', and increase male genital abnormalities.
A great deal of pressure has been placed on environmental protection agencies to devise regulatory tests for the effects of these chemicals and to require limitations on their manufacture and release. Fish are increasingly recognized as an excellent model for such tests, in that the aquatic environment may provide early warnings of the effects that these chemicals will have on human health. In addition, the large number of eggs which fish produce provides an excellent model to examine the effects on female fertility.
Endocrine Disruption in Fish provides a simple yet extensive background to the field of fish endocrinology in order to assist those toxicologists who have a limited background in either mammalian or fish endocrinology. It shows that environmental estrogens do not simply affect male reproductive potential, but that they may equally well affect the female. It is possible that these chemicals may have a complex effect on the brain, hypothalamus, pituitary, gonad and liver of both sexes.
There are many other chemicals which affect both the gonads and other parts of the endocrine system to cause decreased fertility, abnormal sexual differentiation and behavior, decreased response to stress, immune deficiency or altered basal metabolism. Many thousand man-made chemicals are released into the environment, but very few have been tested for endocrine disrupting activity. This book covers only the minute fraction for which evidence has been collected.

Description:
A specific sex steroid-binding protein (SBP) is believed to be involved in regulation of circulating sex steroids, steroid delivery to target cells and intracellular signalling in sex steroid-sensitive tissues. In the present work, interactions between xenoestrogens and the plasma SBP in Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus L.) were determined using ligand-protein binding studies. The test compounds were all able to displace tritiated 17@b-estradiol (E2) from the Arctic charr SBP (acSBP) in a competitive and dose-dependent manner. The acSBP affinities for the xenoestrogens ranged over several orders of magnitude (17@b-estradiol@?ethynylestradiol (EE2)>zearalenone (ZEA)>diethylstilbestrol (DES)>genistein (GEN)>bisphenol A (BPA), 4-t-octylphenol (OP)@?o,p'-DDT, and dieldrin (DIN)), but were consistently lower than that of 17@b-estradiol (about 4x10^2-10^6-fold less potent). The relative binding affinity (RBA) for selected chemicals were independent of both gender, age and maturation status, as well as variations of acSBP binding affinity. The affinity of endogenous steroids and estrogen mimics for the acSBP shows a high correlation to the affinity for the rainbow trout SBP, thus suggesting a phylogenetically conserved ligand-binding site between closely related species. Furthermore, it is argued that interaction with the acSBP- and SBP-mediated processes may introduce novel pathways for endocrine disruption, which may work in concert with the classical receptor-mediated effects.

Description:
This study represents a first approach to short-term effects of phenanthrene (Phe) in fish. The teleost Liza aurata was exposed to 0.1-2.7@mM Phe during 16h. CYP1A induction was assessed as liver ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity. Genotoxicity was evaluated in gill and liver as DNA integrity (by alkaline unwinding), whereas in blood the erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities (ENA) frequency was determined. Stress responses were determined as cortisol, glucose and lactate plasma levels. Liver EROD activity was significantly increased by Phe 0.3-2.7@mM. Phe genotoxicity in gill was not found, whereas liver DNA integrity significantly decreased after exposure to Phe 0.1 and 0.9@mM demonstrating its genotoxicity which did not correlate with liver CYP1A induction. Phe genotoxicity in blood was demonstrated by a significant ENA increase from 0.1 up to 2.7@mM. In terms of stress responses, plasma cortisol was significantly increased by Phe 0.3-2.7@mM, though plasma glucose was only significantly increased by Phe 0.9 and 2.7@mM. The Phe observed effects on L. aurata detected at different levels demonstrate a physiological unbalance and a probable ecological risk to ichthyofauna.

Description:
Some chemicals have the potential to adversely affect sexual development through multiple endocrine actions. Prochloraz is an imidazole fungicide that displays diverse mechanisms of action, including inhibition of aromatase activity, inhibition of androgen synthesis, and antagonism of the androgen receptor. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of prochloraz on the sexual development of zebrafish (Danio rerio) in the Fish Sexual Development Test (FSDT) proposed as an OECD test guideline for detection of endocrine disruptors. Zebrafish were exposed to prochloraz (0, 16, 64 or 202 @mg/L) for 60 days from 24 h post fertilization. Fish exposed to 202 @mg/L prochloraz showed an increased proportion of males. Furthermore, the incidence of intersex and the stages of the gonads were altered in the treated fish compared to the control fish. A significant vitellogenin decrease was observed in both female and male zebrafish at an exposure concentration of 202 @mg/L prochloraz. However, in the male fish, significantly increased vitellogenin concentrations were observed in the groups exposed to 16 or 64 @mg/L prochloraz. This study serves as a part of the validation of the FSDT and indicates that the FSDT is suitable in detecting compounds with multiple endocrine actions. This is of importance in the assessment of the potential risk of existing and new chemicals.

Description:
Estrogenic chemicals such as alkylphenols (APs) have been shown to disrupt the reproductive system of male fish. In the present study, the effects of the estrogenic chemical octylphenol (100 @mg g^-^1) and 17@b-estradiol on the semen production and the biochemical composition of the seminal fluid of the viviparous eelpout (Zoarces viviparus) were investigated at the time of spawning. After 10 days of octylphenol or estrogen treatment, vitellogenin (Vtg) synthesis was induced as indicated by increased plasma vitellogenin concentration. In accordance with the increased vitellogenin concentration, hepatosomatic index (HSI), total protein concentration, and total calcium concentration were also increased, and free amino acids concentration was decreased in blood plasma. Octylphenol treatment caused a decrease in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and the milt volume and an increase in the spermatocrit. The histological examination revealed that octylphenol affected the normal lobular structure, including the Sertoli cells. In the majority of the octylphenol-treated fish, trapped sperm cells were observed in parts of the seminiferous lobules and the sperm ducts. The biochemical composition of the seminal fluid was also affected by the octylphenol or estrogen. The seminal plasma concentrations of magnesium, calcium, and total protein were elevated, and the concentration of free amino acids was reduced in the treated fish. This study indicates that octylphenol inhibits the seminal fluid production and changes its biochemical composition in eelpouts.

Description:
Recently, it has been demonstrated that the biocide tributyltin (TBT) can interfere with fish sex differentiation, leading to a bias of sex toward males. On the contrary, it is well known that estrogenic compounds can induce fish feminization. Yet, the combined effects of mixtures of androgenic and estrogenic compounds on fish sex differentiation have never been investigated before, even though in the environment animals are frequently exposed to both groups of xenobiotics. Therefore, in order to investigate whether exposure to estrogenic compounds can block the masculinizing effect of TBT, 5 days post-fertilization zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae were exposed for a four month period to TBT and to the synthetic estrogen-ethinylestradiol (EE2). The fish were fed a diet containing TBT at nominal concentrations of 25 and 100 ng TBT/g, and two groups of animals were also dosed with TBT plus EE2 at nominal water concentration of 3.5 ng/L, using a flow-through design. As expected, fish exposed to TBT showed a bias of sex toward males (62.5% males in control tanks and 86% and 82% in TBT 25 and TBT 100 ng TBT/g, respectively). Co-exposure to EE2 completely blocked the masculinizing effect of TBT, with 7% males in the TBT 25 ng/g+EE2 treatment and 0% in the EE2 alone and in the TBT 100 ng/g+EE2 exposed groups. These results clearly indicate that EE2, at environmentally relevant concentrations, can block the TBT masculinizing effects in zebrafish, which suggests that in the aquatic environment the presence of estrogens may neutralize the fish masculinizing effect of TBT. Our findings highlight the need of testing the combined effects of contaminants, as single exposure studies may not be sufficient to predict the effects of mixtures of xenobiotics with antagonistic properties.

Description:
Vitellogenin (VTG) is a widely used biomarker in studies of endocrine disruption induced by xenobiotics such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). This study evaluates the estrogenic effects of these compounds on the black-fin goodeid Girardinichthys viviparus, an endangered fish species in Mexico with a reduced range of distribution due to pollution of its natural environment. Adult fish born in the laboratory were exposed to half the LC"0 of Inerteen(R) commercial PCB mixture. VTG was determined through an inhibition enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using a homologous-heterologous system. Male and female fish were killed after 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 days of exposure. The distal third of each specimen was used for analysis. VTG was obtained from cultured hepatocytes and blood serum of males previously exposed to 17@b-estradiol. VTG molecular mass was 348 kDa. PCBs were found to elicit greater estrogenic effects on VTG induction in males than in females (p
<0.05) and sex differences were noted. Time-dependent VTG induction kinetics in males and a stationary phase in females were also observed.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2006-08-28
First, beware, this book is largely about the towns surrounding Yellowstone. It has 30 pages on Grand Teton, 90 pages on Yellowstone, and 180 pages on areas outside the parks.
The entire Yellowstone section is lumped into one item in the Table of Contents which means that to find say "old faithful" you have to either check the index or flip randomly through the book.
Lastly, the lack of detail was appaling. For example it said only that Canyon has "various stores and eating places." Such as? A place to get a sandwich? A place for a nice dinner? A store with a good selection of camping gear? No way to know until you get there.
I skimmed this book before I left but I was in Yellowstone for a week and barely opened this book because I found it so frustrating.
Most up-to-date guide for Yellowstone and Surrounding Areas.......2004-07-15
Author Don Pitcher has revised the wonderful first edition of his Moon Handbook for Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. The new edition packs in even more information than the original. This guide contains detailed driving information for driving through both Yellowstone and Grand Teton Parks. The guide also provides helpful tips on highlights in both parks and the areas where you are most likely to see wildlife. The hotel reviews and contact information have been updated, and I found the reviews to be quite accurate.
One of the best features of this book is the information included on Jackson, Wyoming, including a detailed block-by-block map of the city which shows the location of each restaurant, museum, art gallery, and store mentioned in the text.
I like the Moon Handbook series because of the extensive historical information included in each book. This one is no exception. Using this book will give you a much greater appreciation of the area's fur trappers, early traders, and American Indian influences in addition to the natural beauty of the area.
Great Road Trip Resource.......2003-03-14
This book was very imformative and valuable on a recent road trip to the parks with my kids. I provided a consise resource of information and facts in an easily readable form. A valuable addition to your glove box at the start of your trip, or reading material on the flight to Jackson. Highly recommended.
The only book you'll need to buy.......2003-03-10
There are many travel guides which will tell you where to eat, where to stay, and how much you can expect to spend. Some contain maps, important phone numbers, and local attractions. This book goes well beyond that. You will come away with a deep appreciation of the area and a better understanding of the wildlife. You will come to understand the differences between a black, brown, and grizzly bear and how to peacefully coexist with them in the park. You will learn how geysers work, what dangers exist, and how to help preserve the park for future generations.
Essential Companion for Yellowstone National Park.......2002-06-03
I just returned from a visit to Yellowstone and found this book extremely helpful both in planning the trip and as a reference while there. I particularly liked the author's reviews of the accomodations within the park, which I found to be accurate, especially his reviews of the accomodations at the Old Faithful area, Canyon, and Lake Yellowstone.
The book contains excellent, accurate maps and the descriptions of touring the park contain lots of little-known sites that were worth seeing. Also, the book contains great information on hikes within the park.
I looked at several other guides to Yellowstone, this one by far outshines the other ones that I saw.
Enjoy your visit to this wonderful park!

Old English Tile Designs.......2005-09-09
As the Master of the Saint Caitlin's Guild of Hairy Potters, I have been teaching classes in the crafts of the Middle Ages, including the making of the tiles in the retro Quire at Winchester. This handy little volume allows the copying of designs for everyone in the class, with a range of easy to difficult, and scaled to produce four inch tiles allowing for clay shrinkage.
All my work is done for me. All I have to do now . . .is teach.
Nice design illustrations.......1999-12-21
There are 150 floor tile designs from medieval cathedrals and monasteries rendered in black&white. Lots of animals, dragons, griffins, and fleur-de-lis. There are also face images of kings, jesters, etc.
All designs are shown in decent (maybe actual?) tile size (around 4-5 inches square), as well as in groups of four (or more if required), to show how repeats would work. All designs are very bold and simple, but amazing when placed in repeat.
Nice designs for beginning tile makers to use, since the designs can be easily worked in clay. Well worth the cost of the book.

Book Description
Six years ago the Preston Creative Living Centre, a small community agency in the diverse northern suburbs of Melbourne, embarked upon a risky but exciting venture. It marshalled resources for people to engage in artistic and community processes together and became a performance venue for a series of vital and engaging performances. Over this time the space has become alive, filled with people and activity. This book is about the partnerships between organisations, artists, and communities for community artmaking. It is the story of one organization’s experience with community performance-making, from the philosophy that informs choices, to the nitty-gritty of work.
