Estimating abundance of wildlife is an essential component of a wildlife research program, and a prerequisite for sound management. With the exception of a few highly mathematical volumes, there are no books on the subject for use by students and field workers. Also, the various techniques for counting animals found in scientific journals are often not accessible to African managers. The unavailability of the diverse literature necessitated the production of a textbook or field manual that covers the ground. The book compiles the most relevant techniques for counting African mammals, illustrated with many examples from the field. It provides guidelines for selecting the appropriate methodology for a range of conditions commonly found in the field, in terms of different animal species, habitat types, and management objectives.

I found this book quite useful while hiking on the big island, where I did the majority of the recommended hikes (excluding the Mauna Kea, admittedly). I used it in the planning phase and, in conjunction with a topographic map, during the hikes. The descriptions of the hikes are accurate both in terms of the path to take, the scenery, plant and animal life to expect as well as in regard to the time the hikes will take. The warnings it contains, especially regarding the need to carry enough water are to be taken seriously! As a fit but not expert hiker, I ended up finishing the hikes in about the lower estimated duration given by lonely planet.

What made me, as a biologist, sad while hiking in Hawaii was the abundance of non-native (invading) species, which in many cases have a detrimental effect on the endemic Hawaiian species. There is not much in this book about this problem, which is quite striking to anyone interested in nature who hikes around the Hawaiian islands.

In addition to the sections about the hikes, I found the information on hostels and cheap dining places on the big island informative.

A note to any prospective purchasers: Lonely Planet released several books on Hawaii, both about the state in general and also about some of the individual islands. This book only covers state and national parks, and known hiking trails on the five islands you can get to (thus excluding Lana'i, and the inaccessible Kaho'olawe and Niihau. Therefore, it's best used in conjunction with the other general books on the subject.

I found this book to be of value for the three islands I visited. There's a little bit of outdated information about climbing the Diamond Head volcano crater on Oahu. More useful to me were the extend portions about Waimea Canyon State Park on Kauai (absolutely gorgeous even if you're only driving up, as my wife and I did) and the material about Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island. This latter section was especially helpful in terms of providing background information, as we had a poor commercial tour guide who frequently missed the points we were interested in.

I recommend this book even for the non-hiker (we limited ourselves mostly to the "easy" trails) because the level of detail about the two state parks mentioned above, surpasses both what I found in other books and even from some tour guides.

This book hits on just the tip of the iceburg. There are hundreds of trails on these islands and since I only visited two I wanted it to tell me more. So if you do buy it, use it for just an overview. It makes a good companion to the Frommers Hawaii book.

I picked up this book because of Lonely Planet's good name. For general reading it's okay for an overview but for solid trail advice and exact information that a hiker really needs, it misses the mark. I only visited one island and there weren't enough listings to make purchasing this book worthwhile.

The Ultimate Wiener Dog Art.......2007-09-02

This book is an unmitigated delight. The photographs are enchanting and the story they tell completely wonderful. I was sad to learn that Picasso "dumped" Lump when his back was injured, but he gave him to David Douglas Duncan (who originally brought him) and I must think that Lump lived out his days in great happiness. In any event, this is a real charmer and a great one to keep on the coffee table to look through again and again.

Art is one of my passions, and until getting this book Picasso was just an inivative man to me with a weird style I didn't appreciate. This book changed my mind, especially after reading this part of the book,"Picasso's welcome of Lump into his family happened so fast Jacqueline was stunned--speechless. There had always been dogs around Picasso's studios and seen in some of his paintings but never in his arms--where Lump was now at home." It was really a touching book.

You must own this if you are a dachshund lover. And you really must own it if you are an art lover.

This wonderful book was a big hit with me for two reasons. I've had dachshunds all of my life, with two in residence now, and I majored in art history in college. The minute the book arrived I read it cover to cover. Lump's antics tickled me to death and I laughed out loud causing my own dachshunds to stare and look at me in the way that only dachsies can do. I've even begun calling my most mischievious one "Lumpita" ! After reading the book I went back and examined every detail in each picture, fascinated with the very intimate look into the private life of the artist. The story of Picasso and Lump exposes a vulnerable side of an artistic genius. You don't have to love dachshunds to love this book!

Not what I expected.......2007-05-13

I didn't realize when I ordered this book that it was primarily a photographic essay. The pictures are delightful but, as a dachshund "owner," I had hoped for more of a written history of the adventures of Lump. 'Owner' in quotes since anyone who has lived with a dachsie knows who owns whom.

The authors have only inserted "Retail Florist" into a generic template for beginning small businesses with a computer. This is concluded not only from the lack of florist industry examples, but also from the repeated grammatical error "...an Retail Business" throughout the book and the long list of "How to Start & Manage..." material solicited in the back cover.

There is only one page referencing three professional florist organizations and a small section with sparse information on the Retail Florist potential near the end of the book. I might mention that the Business Resource Information section (for How to Start & Manage a Retail Florist Business) includes "How to Start a Profitable Child Care Program in Your Home", "How to Start Your Own Bed and Breakfast...", and "How to Start a Successful Word Processing Business in Your Home".
