Why not Newfoundland and Labrador?.......2005-07-17
Normally I am a Lonely Planet enthusiast, but this one is a turkey. I bought it, then returned it. Why? Principally because it contains nothing whatever about the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, which were the principal destinations for a trip I was planning. Isn't Newfoundland and Labrador a maritime province? Apparently Lonely Planet doesn't think so. But even if they don't, it would seem to be just common sense to include it, because anyone planning a trip to the 3 provinces they do cover would be likely to want to go to at least Newfoundland as well. (Admittedly Labrador is a different story--that's strictly for backpackers.)

Roadtested.......2003-02-22
February 2003 - just back from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. I found the book helpful, accurate and comprehensive - exactly the qualities required in a travel guide.
Terrific choice.......2002-09-16
I'm currently using this book to plan a Sep 2003 trip up to Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island & possibly the Bay of Fundy. Lonely Planet has to be my favorite series of travel books, and this edition is right on par with their other guides.
One goal of mine has been to stay in B&B's the whole time (I picture lots of intimate Atlantic oceanside places), and there is a good focus on these accommodations. Another increasing trend in the LP series has been to supplement with web addresses for more information. The author looks like they have gone to great lengths to provide an extraordinary number of links for accommodations, activities, visitor info and often, restaurants. Coverage of maps (including city) and suggested itineraries are two of my favorite aspects of Lonely Planet, and this guide has great ones. This book also doubles as a history primer for the area. Two easy-read examples within that I enjoyed included background on the New Brunswick-to-PEI bridge & the history of why Halifax gives a Christmas tree to Boston each year.
Overall, there is more information contained within than I could use while visiting the area. It's simply the best choice for visiting the Maritimes.
One last note, Lonely Planet also released a full guide on Quebec as well.
Maritimes.......2002-09-16
As the previous reviewer stated, this is a great guide for locals as well as visitors. The author combines some fine local history and stories with essential travel tips that will definitely point travellers in the right direction for an enjoyable vacation.
A simple, easy-reference guide.......2002-09-07
Canada's Maritime Provinces is a simple, easy-reference guide to touring Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. Maps, facts, history, motel listings, restaurants, famous entertainment locales, highlights, expenses, and much more are covered in this small, handy, portable and information-packed reference. Canada's Maritime Provinces is a "must-have" for anyone planning to see the sights on or near Canada's windswept and beautiful coast.

Ancient Greece for Kids.......2007-07-20
This book was truly helpful in the classroom. It is a great intoduction to the Greek world. It is an ancient times new paper filled with a lot of factful information about Greek life in today's modern langauge. Kids learn about what the Greeks ate, what they wore, who went to school and who did not, about their government, religion, every day customs and even every day utensils used back then. I found myself being fascinated by this book the first time I saw it because it is a great fountain of information in just one small book. I learned a lot too!! It is not a text book, but it has just what you need to introduce the Ancient Greeks to your students.
High School Helper.......2003-11-07
This book has been the greatest help for my greek projects. In this book you get an easy explanation of the greeek culture with out a lot of dry information. It's an easy read and something one can get the best info from. Especially culture and war though it does an article on both dsacrifices to the god and the oracles. Easy and fun IF YOU ARE A TEACHER PLEASE PICK THIS BOOK! Your students will enjoy it! :)
This book is great to use as a supplement for Greek History.......1998-10-20
This was a great book. I used it along with my studying of Greek History in school. I would read out of my textbook and other books then find a section in this book to read about. It helped me understand Greece a lot better. I enjoy the little cartoons and fake advertisements put in. The articles are written in many different forms including: interviews, traveling reporters and submitted articles. It is a fun book to read and I really loved it. This book is great for anyone either studying Greece or just interested in the subject. Age 13

Beautiful photos.......2002-05-09
Some of the most beautiful lifeforms on this planet are illustrated in this book, and when reading it, one can only feel more amazement and respect for this order of reptiles. The colors, patterns, and life styles of snakes are varied enough to keep a serious student of herpetology busy for a long time. One can only envy the photographer who took the pictures in this book.
The book is not just a photo collection however, for the author also includes a discussion of their taxonomy, natural history, biology, eating habits, diseases, reproduction, and how to care for them in captivity. The most interesting discussion in the book was on taxonomy, for it is very controversial. The binomial system is employed in the book, but the author explains that a trinomial classificiation becomes appropriate when certain characteristics are unable to justify a separate classification as a species. The North American Common Kingsnake is offered as an example of this, having at it were seven subspecies.
The top 10 most beautiful snakes in the book:
1. Trimeresurus wagleri p. 569
2. Chondropython viridis p.41
3. Diadophis punctatus punctatus p. 257
4. Oxybelis fulgidus p. 356
5. Ahaetulla prasina p. 312
6. Dendraapsis augusticeps p. 412
7. Bitis nasicornis p. 476
8. Naja nigricollis p. 429
9. Drymarchon corais couperi p. 111
10. Lampropeltis zonata p. 164
This book is unfortunately out of date with incorrect facts........1999-07-24
John Coborn has written some very good books but this one gets the two stars from the brilliant photos. The species doesn't get their english name by the pictures, only by taxonomy, and those are some times incorrect. Incorrect maximum lengths for the species some times as well. John Coborn could have done it better.

A life of collecting to understand a sailor's life........2000-03-24
Welles Henderson started his maritime history collecting as a schoolboy when he invested 50 cents in the USS Constitution, aka Old Ironsides. His first piece was a small anchor, his reward for his contribution to the preservation of this revolutionary war masterpiece. After many years of collecting memorabilia of the sailor's life he started the Philadelphia Maritime Museum, now the Independence Seaport Museum. His intense interest in the shipboard life of Jack Tar comes out in the many illustrations, most in color, many drawn or painted by sailors. Most of these illustrations are of items that he has collected in his world travels. For those interested in the romantic adventures or the dull drudgery of shipboard life in the 19th century this book will be a welcome voyage.
A very great contribution to maritime history.......2000-02-01
There has never been a book quite like JACK TAR and it couldn't be more welcome. It's a real treasure chest of a book -- sumptuous to look at, a delight to read, and sound in scholarship. It's also a book to enjoy again and again. The authors and designer deserve highest praise.
A fascinating look at the lives of sailors of the past.......1999-10-20
This book gives an extremely interesting account of the lives of sailors of both the United States and Britain in the age of sailing and steam-powered ships. Through artifacts gathered by nautical antiques collector (and founder of the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia) J. Welles Henderson, we discover what valued most to these men (and a few women) and get a taste of how they passsed their time. An extremely impressive array of images shows their handicrafts (scrimshaw, macramé, etc.), as well as pointing out the dangers and drudgery inherent in the sailors' lives. Topics cover everything from discipline at sea and sailor's misbehavior on shore to acts of piracy and available medical care. Both naval and merchant service experiences are explored. I only wish such a comprehensive volume had been available when I did the research for my novel A Star to Sail By, which features a sailor of the clipper ship era. I would recommend this book to anyone with a love of sea lore and a nostalgia for the age of the great sailing ships.

More research involved........2001-04-04
I am a current Texas resident, who has been dancing for ~18 years.
I decided after getting my 'bread and butter' degree, that I would now pursue my dance degree. I went on the internet, and found some schools whose programs looked fabulous! My friend recommended this book to me, swearing it to be the 'Bible of Dancers'. I even had the book special ordered. Upon arrival, I opened it only to find the schools I had pursued were not listed. On top of that, I had taken some dance classes at the University of Oklahoma, only to find Mr. Jones refers to Ko Yukihiro as a 'she' in the book. I can promise you, as I have taken one of Ko's modern classes, that Ko is a male, not a female.
Texas Woman's University has one of the Top 10 Programs in the nation, both for graduate and undergraduate studies, yet Mr. Jones doesn't even have TWU listed. TWU has several guest artists, and all the faculty have incredible resume's. How well did Mr. Jones do his homework? The University of North Texas; one of the largest Universities in Texas, is not mentioned either.
I was also at a loss when I tried to find an area that would help me write my dance resume'. One would believe that for such a comprehensive, well-written book, surely advice on how to write a good dance resume' would have been included. After all, it tells you about your taxes!
I give this book 3 stars. I hope revisions are in the making.

The 1998 10th edition of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary marks the 100th anniversary of this distinguished and popular reference standard, and this is more than just an interesting statistic--it means that Merriam-Webster brings years of experience and reams of citation files to the creation of this latest edition. Improving on their last dictionary, they've added more than 100 pictorial illustrations and supplemented the synonym paragraphs with examples. Along with the English dictionary, which forms the heart of the reference, the editors at Merriam-Webster have included a brief introduction to the English language and a history of the English dictionary, a guide to pronunciation, and a series of appendices that include chemical element abbreviations and symbols, foreign words and phrases, extensive sections with biographical and geographical names, signs and symbols, and a handbook of style.
But getting back to the book itself--it's impressively comprehensive for a collegiate dictionary, with more than 215,000 definitions. Each item includes a pithy wealth of information, with first usage date, etymology, and pronunciation, and clear, precise definitions. In addition, there are often usage notes, synonym cross-references, illustrative quotations, variant spellings and pronunciations, regional labels, and information on capitalization, function, and inflections. Then there are the extra touches. Under bible, for example, there's a chart detailing books of the Old Testament, Jewish Scripture, Protestant apocrypha, and books of the New Testament. Under months is a table listing the months of the principal calendars--Gregorian, Jewish, and Islamic. And wonderful line drawings illustrate terms such as mackerel, lyrebird, hedgehog, and the ancient Celtic stringed instrument known as a crowd. All this makes it a valuable reference--detailed enough for editors and writers, accessible enough for students and casual definition seekers, updated with the new vocabulary of technology, and rigorous enough for the linguistic perfectionists. --Stephanie Gold

Customer Reviews:
Shortcomings.......2007-09-18
This product really needs the addition of an audio pronouncing feature, in our opinion. Without this feature, correct pronouncing is quite difficult.
Great Dictionary.......2007-04-17
I have been using a Merriam-Webster dictionary for years. When I bought a new computer my old software needed replacing. I bought a Dictionary by Random House and was very disappointed. It did not even show how to hyphenate words. I then bought the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and love it. It works like it is supposed to and has the features I need.
Barely misses perfection.......2007-04-03
If you're fed up with fumbling even a collegiate-sized or paperback book on your lap just to quickly look up a definition, synonym or spelling, you'll love this electronic dictionary/thesaurus, which conveniently presents all that right on the computer screen where you're already working.
But unfortunately, you'll have to minimize your current program to get to the desktop icon for this program, since it offers no way to pop it up from an icon in the tray -- its worst shortcoming, in my view.
The only way to have it immediately available is by running it, then minimizing it to the taskbar, where it consumes space along with other programs you may already have minimized there. I suppose that's really a minor quibble, but it bugs me greatly because there's no reason beyond lazy programming that it couldn't have offered a tray icon option.
The two exceptions to that are if you're writing in MS Word or Corel's WordPerfect, where macros can be installed as buttons, allowing you to highlight a word and pop it up in the dictionary/thesaurus by clicking that button.
But that's a sadly limited use of a major program's pop-up capability, which with a little extra programming could have been expanded to include virtually any selected word on the screen, as is possible with some other electronic dictionaries.
That notwithstanding, the program offers the same robust selection of definitions and synonyms you'll find in the printed Merriam-Webster Collegiate, but with a number of easily clickable search options for finding them. They're also presented in basically the same excellent format Merriam-Webster uses in its printed versions.
If you can't find a suitable word in the 225,000 definitions and 340,000 synonyms and related words available in this program, you're probably looking for something that'll drive whoever's reading what you're writing to a dictionary.
Selecting the dictionary or thesaurus is as quick and easy as clicking on either from a drop-down menu prominently at the top of the program -- and you can set either as the default on startup.
Other configuration preferences are sparsely limited to changing text size/color and background color, and setting a default for any of the 19 search "types."
To look up a word, you can select from three tabbed options:
Basic Searches (Entry word is...): You'd likely use this most. As soon as you enter the first letter a list pops up in a lower window with everything beginning with that letter. As you type additional letters, you increasingly drill down to words nearer what you're looking for, ending with your word highlighted when you type the final letter. This is basically exactly the same routine as when you use the "Find" feature of any Windows help program -- and sure beats flipping through pages of a book.
Advanced Searches: This is a Boolean thing using AND, OR, NOT and some possible parenthetical expressions. I found it to be mostly an advanced piece of uselessness.
Browse: This is basically like thumbing through a printed dictionary starting at some letter and functions exactly the same as drilling down through the letters of a word using the Basic search feature. But -- and that's a big BUT -- its two options of searching for either the beginning or ending of a word can be a lifesaver when you have no idea how to begin spelling that word. For example: Try looking up "ptarmigan" under "T" or "mnemonic" under "N." You'll get nowhere fast on either. But search for the fairly obvious endings and sooner than later you'll find those words.
One other quibble I have with this program is that it refuses to recognize my USB mouse wheel for scrolling through the word lists. But I've learned to be content with the side slider.
Its few shortcomings aside, at Amazon's price this program's a world-class bargain, functions flawlessly for what it's intended and hands down beats wrestling with a book.
Perfect -- almost!.......2007-03-16
This is a can't -live-without- it reference product. It's got all sorts of ways to help the writer or speaker. Is it Antartic or Antarctic? Athelete or Athlete? What's a four letter word synonym for morose? What is the correct pronouncement of herb? Whet? What rhymes with storage? There are at least 15 valuable word tools in this relatively inexpensive program. I would pay twice the price.
That said, I had difficulty installing the software on my iMac G5 running O.S. 10.4. I ordered the CD (so glad I did) and everything was a snap except ... no pronunciation unless the CD was inserted. This is fixable, but not without cnversations with M-W. And their instructions didn't work well. PCs? I couldn't say. What the hell -- take a chance.
Historical Use of this Dictionary.......2007-02-24
This edition of the Webster's Dictionaray was recommended to me when I began writing historical fiction. Many of the entries have a note giving the year the word was first used. I had previously used an Oxford English Dictionary, which does not give the year of origin. The nice thing about the Oxford, however, is that it contains many words used in England along with English, rather than American, spellings.
This would also be a useful dictionary for the high school student. It has a presentation page making it a nice gift for students.

Book Description
Calm Birth is a safe, noninvasive, and drug-free childbirth method, based on meditation and mind/body medicine, which has been used in hospitals for more than 10 years. Supported by many highly respected childbirth specialists, including Jeannine Parvati Baker, Ina May Gaskin, and Ruth L. Miller, it encourages natural childbirth, but is effective even when medical interventions are necessary, as it helps heal the side effects of medications and invasive procedures. The three narrations on this CD guide mothers-to-be and new mothers through the main relaxation and meditation practices detailed in the author’s book Calm Birth: A New Method for Conscious Childbirth — the practice of opening, womb breathing, and giving and receiving. An empowering alternative to the “medicalization of birth," the techniques allow women to channel their innate wisdom, ability, and energy, making the birth experience a truly blessed event.
1. Practice of Opening 22:15 minutes
2. Womb Breathing 22:12 minutes
3. Giving and Receiving 12:21 minutes
Calm Birth is a program of Medigrace, a nonprofit corporation.

good methods, but not an easy read..........2007-04-30
I have been reading many books on natural childbirth methods, and the common thread is to not fear pain and breathe deep slow breaths(no panting), and visualizations. This book's methods are based heavily on Buddhist meditation with some references to physics and natural energy fields of the body. Yes, I did say physics in a pregnancy book. The author writes this book like a published research paper and it can be VERY hard to read. For much of the book the author keeps throwing out different names and citing their research and tries to back up the methods up a little too much. It can be a bit overwhelming for a tired pregnant woman, especially if it overwhelms me now just doing research before I get pregnant with child number two. The actual methods, (there are three) are confined to a much shorter part of the book, and I can see where the CD might be all you need if you have done much research. There is a small jab a Christianity and it's ties with the downfall of women as healers in the beginning, so a sensitive religious reader may be offended. This book does not go into the biological process of birth to let you know exactly what is happening with your body. I feel that knowledge of childbirth is part of the empowerment to give birth naturally and should have been included. At the very end it gives childbirth stories, but is written in interview form and that too can be hard to read.
Overall, if this was the only book you read I think you would be able to have a successful childbirth. BUT I recommend you read some other books first: Hypnobirthing by Marie Mongan is my favorite. HypnoBirthing: The Mongan Method: A natural approach to a safe, easier, more comfortable birthing (3rd Edition) It made me feel so empowered. Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way is very good too, but is a little negative and very outdated. Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way: Revised Edition
