Well Worth the Investment.......2006-09-12
Nigeria tends to get short-shrift in the travel guidebooks; rarely is it featured, and it is commonly maligned. This even-handed treatment of Africa's most populous country dishes out the treats that Nigeria has in store for the traveller as well as the negatives. In short, if one exercises common sense and stays alert to his surroundings, Nigeria can be a rewarding experience. The author is a fearless youngster eager to try everything, but also allows for an older person's expatriated sensibilities, understanding that not every traveller wants to camp or lodge in youth hostels (a common ailment in the Lonely Planet travel serials). She finds the warmth in the people that is a common Nigerian trait, and allows the reader to experience that warmth with her. There is no cold, clinical distance from her subject(s). This book is well worth the investment.
Invaluable.......2006-02-23
As a recipient of numerous email correspondences from immensely wealthy Nigerian heirs and heiresses, I figured that something must be going right in Nigeria, especially Lagos. So, having just sent an wealthy son of a King Obi Obi $10,000 (US), in exchange for some $450 million (US), I wanted to be the first to hop a plane to Nigeria to meet this fine fellow face to face. Particularly after the funds did not show up in my account as he had promised.
Let me tell you that this guidebook led me down the dusty, dirty, rebel-infested roads of Nigeria like I would imagine no other guidebook could. In no time I was lead straight to the Internet Cafe where I was shocked to find several sons and daughters of Kings and wealthy, deceased oilmen all writing to foreign potential investors.
My $10,000 (US) is long gone, and the millions upon millions never showed up, but my guide through Lagos was complete thanks to this book. If you plan on going, pick up yours today!
Excellent informative book.......2005-12-19
I recently went on a medical mission trip to Nigeria. I bought this book to learn about the basics of the country, including culture, politics and religion. I found this to be a very well researched book with excellent information, presented in an easy to read fashion. Most notable, however, is the fact that this is the first book in its class. There are no other travel publications devoted to Nigeria. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is planning to travel to this part of the world.
A "Must Buy" for anyone living in or visiting Nigeria.......2005-08-29
I have lived in Nigeria now for over seven years and I met Lizzie when she came to Lagos to write the book. Within the space of a few weeks, Lizzie has come to understand Nigeria and the Nigerian people in a way that many long term residents of my acquaintance have not. Time and time again when i was reading the book I found myself recognising places and situations exactly as I had experienced them myself. She writes with great empathy for her subject and tells it as it is, the good and the bad. I showed it to a couple of my Nigerian friends and they loved it and agreed with almost all Lizzie had to say. This book is quite simply a must for anyone living in or visiting Nigeria, as well as being a cracking good read.

best guide to nigeria.......2005-08-25
As a frequent traveller to Nigeria i have been looking for a good guide for a few years - Lizzies wonderful book really helped me get to grips with this facinating but frustrating country. Especially loved the walking tour of Lagos. I'm not sure i have the courage to visit all the places she went to or travel the way she did but its interesting to hear of the places. This book is a must have for anyone considering visiting.
Book Description
Despite its negative image, for travelers with an open mind and friendly demeanor Nigeria is an incredibly absorbing country in which to travel. Experience the mind-boggling chaos of Lagos, the traditional durbars, Benin bronzes and walled cities, and enjoy its single greatest quality – the warm generosity of 140 million people.
Details of getting around, by bush taxi, rail, car or on foot, together with accommodations options, wildlife watching and activities, are balanced by a wealth of background information, from history (of a country dating back thousands of years) and geography to culture and the environment.

Book Description
Description: The shocking new bestseller! Includes exclusive images by 23 teams! Looking like the kind of paperback tome available in the supermarket line--think Jackie Collins or Stephen King--Hd is a bang-up encyclopedic survey of young designers working in Holland. As the story goes: At the beginning of a new century, the creative potential of these young designers surges forth with all the energy granted them by promising futures. From the ashes of a century full of incognitos, feebleness, and superfluous rhetoric, a new style emerges with unstoppable force: do-it-yourself with a vengeance! Their names will surely pass into the annals of graphic design history, but remember you heard it here first: 75B, DEPT., Beng, Experimental Jetset, Roelof Mulder, Mieke Gerritzen, GM, Thonik, Annelys de Vet, Mooren & van der Velden, Studio Boot, Arjan Groot, Lonne Wennekendonk, Lust, Pingpong, Greet, Jop van Bennekom, Joes Koppers, Mevis & van Deursen, Coup, Lava, Stuart Bailey, ECBG, and hundreds more. Act now, before everyone's heard of them!

HD.......2004-06-11
I read the book in two sittings. I wish there were more explanation or background given for the pieces presented. I guess this book is designed for people in the profession so an excess of background information isn't needed.
Having never heard of any of these teams, I wasn't exactly blown away by any of them. The one section that captivated me the most was the flag section. I love the idea of encoding all the possible graphical elements of a world flag and then displaying the output in a long color chart.

Great therapy.......2005-06-27
I contributed the story about "Holly". She was my 15 year old poodle who saw me through the death of my father when I was eight, my teen years and becoming an adult. She died right after my 22nd birthday. Writing my memories of Holly was very theraputic for me. Since then I have lost another beloved pet (Chelsea, a seven year old Himalayan cat) and the stories in this book helped me through my grief. My advice to all pet owners is have this book bought and on a shelf BEFORE the lost of your four-legged friends. The book will be there waiting for you when you need it.
It's Okay to Cry.......2005-02-08
I loved this book. After the death of my best friend of ten years (my dog, Hardy), it made me realise that I wasn't the only one out there.
Don't miss this diamond within . . ........1999-12-04
Don't miss this diamond within and don't be mislead by the reading level (Ages 4-8). This is a powerful book which gives the breaking heart permission to get another dog, love another dog, and form relationships with another dog yet still maintain the respect, integrity, and love for the beloved deceased dog. The book reassures the grieving owner that it is alright--nay, the deceased dog wants and encourages the owner left behind to heal, go on with life, and love again. The book assures the owner that the deceased dog is *ALWAYS* there in spirit and will be waiting for the owner at Rainbow Bridge. Oh yes, have some tissue at hand . . .
This Book Heals.......1999-07-04
If you feel that you're alone and that nobody knows how you feel or have possibly been in the same situation... Read this book. As you read, you will feel the healing power of those who have been there.
If you have lost a pet and are mourning, don't miss reading!.......1998-08-30
If you have recently lost a beloved pet and are grieving, don't miss reading this book. You will find understanding among other animals lovers who have experienced the same type of feelings that you are experiencing. It is truly comforting to know that other people love their pets just as you loved yours. A great gift for anyone who has lost their pet.

A best friend is hurt badly . . . . A grandparent dies . . .

Most likely they are confused. They have questions they want answered. They need help from their parents or others who care to understand and process their grief.
It’s Okay to Cry offers practical help for parents. It explains the symptoms of loss and unresolved grief so that parents can recognize them and walk alongside their children on the path to recovery.

Book Description
This book will provide readers with another perspective about how people deal with adversity in their life. The character, Special expressed herself a great deal throughout the book by crying. Crying helped Special heal. Special used crying as a way of lashing out, venting, and releasing stress. The reader will be able to relate to the circumstances and situations that the characters find themselves in. The reader will be able to relate to at least one, if not more, of the emotions expressed in the book. If the reader themselves have not had the experience they will know someone who has. The book expresses how spirituality helped Special get through all the adversity she experienced. Special had determination and the right attitude throughout the book. Special experienced adversity over and over again and held it together for her self and children. Special had her breaking point and still got through. Through talking to her children, family, friends and a therapist she succeeded in not breaking down or giving up. Special reflects back on her adversities and expresses how she made it through and what was going on in her life at that time. In the book several conversations are taking place that allows the reader to think and reflect on. The reader will be calling family and friends striking up conversations after they have read certain chapters or incidents in the book. The reader being able to relate and identify with several incidents and conversations is the main factor of the book. *The names of the characters are very symbolic in the book. Every woman or man has had a BUSTA in his or her life. A Busta that has made him or her cry.

Book Description
Book 5 in the Medicine Wheel Series by Golden Eagle. This story is for children and though often avoided, it is very well written lesson about death and dying and being able to show our emotions by shedding tears, which is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of being human.

Many people love the idea of a house full of fresh-cut flowers, but sadly, most have no idea how to select, care for, and arrange flowers, much less grow them. Flowers A to Z is a superb guide for anyone who enjoys flowers and wants to celebrate them in the home or garden. Author Cecelia Heffernan, a floral designer by trade, provides a wealth of information on how to cut, purchase, arrange, care for, and grow all types of flowers.
The book is divided into sections covering everything leading up to a beautiful flower arrangement sitting on your dining room table. It begins with a chapter on hardware, which details all the basic tools--from floral shears to floral wire and tape--that you'll need for cutting and arranging flowers, as well as advice on choosing and caring for vases and other containers. The "Handling Flowers" chapter explains the proper way to cut, condition, and care for flowers to ensure the most attractive and long-lasting arrangements. The author sprinkles valuable tidbits of advice throughout the book. She suggests, for instance, that it is better to use branches or thick foliage as arranging aids instead of floral foam, chicken wire, or other artificial aids, as those can shorten the vase life of flowers significantly. This section concludes with a concise and informative guide to growing flowers in your home garden.
The final section, which makes up the bulk of the book, is an alphabetically arranged guide to flowers from agapanthus to zinnia. Each flower is depicted in a gorgeous full-page photograph, while smaller images show the flowers in different stages of development, illustrating the difference between fresh and older flowers. The informative text is written in a handy reference style, detailing the specifics of each flower: its scientific name, available colors, scent, how long the blooms will last after being cut, relative cost, and other useful information.
The gorgeous photographs, accessible text, and handy cross-referencing will surely inspire many readers to fill their homes and gardens with blossoms. --Robin Donovan

I use this book all the time!.......2001-10-05
This book is a great resource for anyone with a cutting garden, a love of flowers, or a romantic husband. It's full of great tips for all different types of flowers and has allowed me to increase the longevity of the bouquets I receive.
I liked it so much that I bought one for mother's day.
The only thing I didn't like about this book is that it shows flowers being cut in air when they should always be cut underwater!
Simply Stunning.......2001-08-08
Not only is this book packed with the most gorgeous photographs, but also it's also full of practical advice. As the title suggests, it is arranged in alphabetical order so that looking for the flower you are after is quick and easy. Each flower is presented with a double page spread, and includes tips on buying, growing, arranging and cutting. It's an extremely useful reference with information on important flower-related problems such as how to make each flower last longer in the vase, what's poisonous, etc. it even gives you the meaning of flower names. Even if you're not into the practical side of arranging flowers, this book is equally valuable as a stunning coffee table book.
Great For Your Reference Library or Your Coffee Table.......2001-07-08
"Flowers A to Z" is a wonderful resource that is definitely needed. Essentially it is a dictionary of flowers, containing information about names, colors, vase life, how to tell freshness, availability, designing tips and more!! But what a dictionary!!!! It is a very large and visually stunning book, lavishly illustrated with beautiful photographs. "Flowers A to Z" provides very practical information about floral product in a format that elevates the content to an art book! Pros and hobbyists alike will appreciate it for both its content and presentation. "Flowers A to Z" would be equally appropriate in your reference library or on your coffee table.
Finally..A fabulous guide for cut flowers.......2001-03-29
For anyone who enjoys flowers, this book is a must! Full of artfully done full-page color photos, it contains a wealth of information on cut flowers. What I really liked was the types of flowers the author choose to include, hydrangea, fritillaria, peonies as well as many other unique varieties. Very upscale and cutting edge, this is not your run of the mill book on daisies. Each flower contains 2 full pages and includes growing and arranging tips, as well as care and handling. An indispensable reference.
Book Description
Perfect for everyone who loves flowers and wants to fill the house with color and scent. This practical and inspirational book shows how to create glorious flower arrangements throughout the year using flowers and foliage that can be grown in your own garden.
Customer Reviews:
One of my Favorites!!!.......2007-06-12
I found this lovely book at the local library a few years back. One page in and I new I had discovered treasure! This book is wonderful. It is so full of helpful information and useful tips which are rarely if ever available on cut flower varieties outside the traditional florist scope. I reference this book almost daily in my floral business. I highly recommend it!
I added it to my collection.......2002-03-05
I too checked this one out from the library and promptly purchased it as a reference for my own book collection. I was most inspired by the variety of plants the author highlighted for arranging...I hadn't thought about a lot of the things I already have growing in my own garden in that light before. I also liked her descriptions of the composition of the arrangements.
Contains fire hazards shown as arranging advice.......2000-10-30
It's quite true that this book shows some lovely and varied flower arrangements. But what concerns me greatly is the picture on page 89 of a grapevine wreath with candles burning beneath it on a mantel. THIS IS A BAD FIRE HAZARD. Please, don't follow the author's example in this - it's too high a risk. Dry, twiggy decorations should never be placed this close to open flame. Nor is it appropriate to place a candle, without a globe around it, to be burned in the center of an arrangement as shown on page 86. Even a green arrangement can be dried to the burning point by a candle flame that close.
I wish this was presented as an example of what not to do, instead of as the successful finished product the author shows it as.
This is Not your Mother's Cutting Garden!.......1997-07-15
I first found this book at my public library. I was skeptical at first because growing, rather than cutting flowers is more my thing. But it looked pretty, so I took it home. Wow! What a surprise. I like it so much that I logged on and ordered it from Amazon immediately.
While many of the flower arrangements were not to my taste, the section on "Flowers and Foliage Through the Seasons" is worth the price of the book. Lavishly photographed and thoroughly documented with varieties and cultivation notes, this section contains a number of more unusual complementary foliage plants that a relative beginning gardener like myself might not think to plant. From Euphorbias and Eryngium to "lime green" Nicotiana and the unusual acid green zinnia "Envy" there are dozens of fantastic plants to complement some of the more traditional border flowers.
Sections covered in the book are:
Planning and stocking the Garden
-includes planting schemes and cultivation tips
Flower Arranging
-my least favorite part of the book, but the notes on conditioning different cut flowers are great.
Flowers and Foliage through the Seasons.
-Excellent reference section. The beautiful photos are very detailed(and to scale, you can actually figure out how big one plant is in relation to another!) and grouped by season and color scheme.
Recommended for the beginning/intermediate flower gardener!

Book Description
Kenneth King is one of America's most inventive postmodern choreographers. His dancing has always reflected his interest in language and technology, combining movement with film, machines, lighting and words both spoken and written. King is also conversant in philosophy, and some of his most influential dances have been dedicated to and in dialogue with the work of such philosophers as Susanne K. Langer, Edmund Husserl and Friedrich Nietzsche. Since the 1960s, he has performed his dance to texts both spoken and prerecorded--texts intended to stand separately as literary works.
Writing in Motion spans more than thirty years and is collected here for the first time. It includes essays, performance scripts of King's own work, art criticism, philosophy and cultural commentary. Dense with movement, these writings explode and reconfigure the familiar, crack syntax open, and invent startling new words. Dancing, to King, is "writing in space," and writing is a dance of ideas. Whether referencing Aristotle, Langer, Simone de Beauvoir, MTV, Maurice Blanchot or Marshall McLuhan, King's delightfully lavish prose is very much "in motion."

Book Description
Concealed within Bittersweet Journey's provocative and orginal chocolate-box design is an exquisitely written novel - romantic, nostalgic, delicately humorous - sprinkled with the author's own luscious photographs and her aphrodisiac passion for chocolate. Charlotte leaves her husband in a quest for more - love, sex, chocolate - lured by her craving from Greenwich Village to the chocolate capitals of the world. Perhaps most enticing of all, the inclusion of evocative color photographs of the world's best chocolates, the addresses of the chocolatiers who make them, and several quintessential recipes for chocolate desserts, allows readers to make Charlotte's journey their own.
Customer Reviews:
A delight for all the senses........1999-10-27
The photography, the story, the knowledge of chocolate -- altogether Enid Futterman's Bittersweet Journey is a delight for all the senses. Perhaps the first of its kind, it is a visual novel, and it is just beautiful. In this deliciously rich and psychologically profound piece of work, the photography is every bit as evocative as the narrative.
It is the story of a woman sprung loose from her marriage who begins an obsessive journey to find the right man via the great capitals of chocolate. Sampling love the way she samples truffles, Charlotte scours Vienna, Munich, Zurich, Brussels, London, Paris, Hawaii, New York and New Hapshire (where the most delicious real ganache is housed in the unlikely bodies of chocolate mice) finding bad boys and beautiful chocolates to arouse her.
But most significantly, Bittersweet Journey is the story of journey into the interior of a woman, a dark tour of the female psyche where longing and love are indistinguishable. Enid Futterman writes in a sharp, spare, deeply poetic way that is reminiscent of Jean Rhys and Marguerite Duras, and comes up with something that will resonate in the heart, mind and palate for a long time to come.
A Rich, Dark Treat for Your Heart.......1999-07-31
The author tells us, in a whispered and poetic voice, an intimate story of her search for love and chocolate across continents and years. On the way, we learn how love and chocolate conspire to fuel her odyssey. Bittersweet Journey's end reveals that, at least for Charlotte, you can go home again.
A Bittersweet (and delicious) Journey.......1999-07-02
Thank you, thank you for the incredible experience of having a book, in its simplicity, tenderly assault one's senses in so many ways. I feel completely saturated, utterly spiritually fulfilled, and terribly well fed.
An excellent and very unique book........1999-07-01
Like a fine truffle this book seems best consumed in one or two bites ... marvelous bites. The text is the most poetic prose I have read in some time, and the stunning photographs (also by the author) make the various chocolates as delicious, alive and sensuous as the book's heroine, Charlotte. I found the "journey" hauntingly appealing. It is alternately nostalgic, melancholy, exciting, intriguing, fulfilling ... but always permeated by an atmosphere of longing and the "bittersweet."
It is also a most unique and sophisticated book. The chocolate stands as both metaphor and solid object in the writing, with recipes for some of its delicacies spelled out in an appendix. The design of the book and its pages is beautiful, unusual and clever: a perfect complement to the text. Yet it is one of the rare cases where the whole seems even greater than some very high-quality parts. A delicious book.
So much more than "a chocolate lovers romp".......1999-06-28
Deep questions are looked at and lived .Wisdom gained by walking the razor's edge is on on nearly every page .
I know several people who need these questions explored and I'm glad there is this book to recommend.
There is more than enough chocolate lore and lust for anyone...and who thought there ever COULD be enough?
Fnid Futterman understands .
Also having Ms Futterman's own photos illustrate her journey added, on many levels, a wholeness of vision .
Chocolate is itself... and a metaphor for much.
This book will take you as deep as you want to go and most likely futher than you thought possible
It's deep fun.

Book Description
The long-awaited sequel to the award-winning memoir, ‘Is That You, Ruthie?’.After twenty-two years under Government control as an inmate of Cherbourg Aboriginal Mission, Ruth journeys towards freedom by marrying Joe Hegarty and moving to a nearby settlement. However, the settlement — with its origins as a camp for displaced Aboriginal families, its system of food rations and shortage of housing and jobs — is a difficult start for the young couple. Humour, a supportive circle of family and friends, and Ruth’s own resourcefulness prevail, and eventually the Hegartys achieve the basics of a house for their growing family. The invasive powers of the Native Affairs Department continue to affect their lives even when, years later, they move to the city. Ruth’s determination and irrepressible sense of fairness characterise a life vigorously committed to social justice and community causes.
Book Description
Journey Through the Bittersweet tells the story of a girl growing up in the Midwest. It is a story of hope in the face of adversity; of joy transcending bittersweet memories. The companion book, Rhapsodies From The Bittersweet, is an anthology of poetry drawn from the author's experiences growing up. "When I finally trusted myself to look to my left, I saw Daddy on his knees looking at me. I froze! I knew I was going to 'get it.' I'm not sure just how much time did pass, but it seemed like an eternity. With my chin propped on my knees and my little heart pounding, I waited. I just sat there waiting for disaster to strike."

Breathing for a Living: A Memoir
ASIN: 1413713246 |
Book Description
Chronic illness has the ability to rob life of its joy and meaning. The social, psychological, and emotional challenges of a chronic illness can destroy lives and leave empty human shells in its wake. But just as chronic illness is a thief, it is also a giver. It has the ability to transform lives by providing countless opportunities for knowledge, personal growth, and perspective. Chronic illness challenges us to accept its intrusively difficult nature and grow through the difficulty. Through a series of poignant essays and chronicled journal entries, Bittersweet Chances recounts Doug and Dana Broehl's journey of growth through the darkness of cystic fibrosis and the renewed hope of a double lung transplant.

Not a Bitter Book.......2005-01-06
Dana Broehl is my spanish teacher, and I read her book mostly to see how good of a writer she is. I found out that she is an excellent writer who adds humor to her very difficult problems. She writes of her husbands double lung transplants and all of the problems that go along with it. It is a heart warming story of love, faith and living ones life to the fullest. This is perfect for anyone who is going through a difficult situation or has been through one in the past.
The Title Says It All.......2004-09-11
Dana is a gifted writer who has told the story of how her life was transformed by love in a most glorious way. She shares the deepest secrets about meeting Doug and then goes on to tell how she had to learn to share him with a third party - a chronic disease that would surely kill him. Was it worth working to build the relationship? Could Dana and Doug beat the odds, which were stacked against them on so many different fronts? There is so much to be learned from their experience and Dana (a teacher by profession) educates the reader about accepting the truth and overcoming obstacles previously unimaginable. There is a spiritual side, but it does not dominate her writing. There is a humorous side, but it does not detract from the seriousness of the story. This is probably the most educational, amusing and uplifting book I have read in the past year.
Hopeful.......2004-06-09
My son has CF, and I know that he will someday need a transplant.
I found this book to be a hopeful and honest portryal of life with a chronic illness. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who feels overwhelmed or burdened by life and illness.
Uncovering The Meaning of Life.......2004-05-23
This book is an open and honest portrayal of one couple's journey through a chronic illness. The book is full of hilarious and heart wrenching stories, but the message is hope. This brave young couple has gone through the storms of life, but they have weathered them in such a way that they have learned to focus not on the storms, but on the rainbows that inevitabley follow. This is a spectacular book that should be read by the healthy and the chronically ill.

A Book Worthy of Your Time.......2000-11-20
Larry Ritter started the trend of visiting former players in his classic entitled "The Glory of Their Times." The author of "A Bittersweet Journey" follows the same trend in visiting former players who are not necessarily stars. Some of the stories I have read about before. The best part of the book, at least for me, was the section entitled "The Media." Roger Kahn discusses visiting Brooklyn's Boys of Summer, Mike Royko tells us how he as a manager would deal with the modern ball player, Vin Scully relates the advice given him by Dodger broadcaster, Red Barber, and Robert Lipsyte tells us that baseball is not going to have the same place in our life that it once had. Bob Cain tells us of his experience in pitching to midget Eddie Gaedel, Jim Bouton revisits his book "Ball Four," Bobby Thompson reveals his thoughts just prior to entering the batter's box just before he and Dodger pitcher Ralph Branca marched hand in hand into history. I won't spoil it for you by giving you the answers to these experiences. The book is a quick read and is worthwhile. I went through it in two sessions.
A Sweet Review.......2000-07-18
Phalen's book is a wonderful oral history which includes interviews with some of baseball's most colorful characters. Included are interviews with offbeat characters such as Jimmy Piersall, Jim Bouton and Dock Ellis. The best interviews are the ones with more pathos that show those on the periphery of baseball or baseball success. The author clearly loves baseball and is able to communicate that love in this book. This will be thoroughly enjoyed by any fan of our national pastime.
A Bittersweet Journey.......2000-07-17
Just when I'm tempted to give up on baseball, along comes "A Bittersweet Journey" to remind me why I can't. Through his contacts and interviews with Hall-of-Famers, not-so-famous players, umpires, sportscasters, writers and observers, Rick Phalen shows why the sport still has an emotional hold on us, both because and despite itself. Some great stories told by the people who lived them, and they do run the full range from bitter to sweet. An enjoyable book to read, it leaves you wanting to go outside and play catch...
That Sensation Called Baseball.......2000-06-29
A thoughtful and well-conceived book that transcends the several generations of its focus. While the pleasurable nature of this work should be shared by the reader with anyone having even a casual interest in baseball, the book should be kept close at hand for return perusals. "A Bittersweet Journey" is aptly named as it touches a broad range of emotions and memories, with the result being a more acute sense of appreciation on the part of the reader for why a trip to the ballpark, the play by play of a familiar announcer, or a simple game of catch in the backyard are experiences that are fondly recalled but frustratingly difficult to explain to those inexperienced in that sensation called baseball.
Bittersweet Journey: Baseball.......2000-06-22
This book reflects the "grip" that baseball has onour lives as fans, and those involved in the game. Phalen provides uswith insights well beyond peanuts, popcorn and crackerjacks. A compelling look at the "cold hearted mistress", we call baseball.
