This book was extremely helpful - up to date, easy to navigate for wanted information, and full of interesting tips. The language section provided enough help to get us through some out of the way experiences.

Practical Combination of Advice, Knowledge and Girth.......2000-09-03

The Rough Guide Hungary is a complete paper guide: both practical as well as good in in-depth knowledge. Arriving in Hungary by plane as I did in the Summer of 2000, you feel you have arrived in a country where a completely strange, vigourous and stimulating language is spoken and little else except goodwill. This book has the capacity to guide you into this really foreign country, offering you several possibilities in the above situation, varying from the safe: 'take a cab but fix the price beforehand', to the more adventurous: 'take bus # 93 (red) to the metro terminal and continue your journey to Budapest by taking the blue metro line to the centre of town'. Whatever your choice, I found this is all excellent advice with no mistakes. The guide continues in this reliable way both in the capital and in the country side, but does more as it also describes Hungary's history and culture in its own words, not copying textbooks. Boxes with extra, spicy information are included.

Because this guide is so good on history, contemporary politics and culture, it doesn't cover every village in Hungary, as other guides in the same category and written for the same public do. This one maintains an enjoyable balance between tourist information, background knowledge and girth. Although its electronic variant as seen on Internet is weaker than its direct competitor, the paper variant is second to none, even superior.

this book is very good.decpite the fact that im rather young im kind of i miney historain and some times i know more than adults (exaple my first grade teacher had to call on me wenever somebody asked about history.)any way i thought that this book was rather accurate she did fall for the accaisonal revulution mith .but still i think this book good teach kids stuff while still being entirtaning overall i thought it was very good.

History with some humor.......2004-02-09

I am a fifth grade teacher and thought this was a well written non-fiction book. It gave great details about the beginnings of this country and the key players. The author includes contributions made by women in history. I thought the novel was respectful with a dap of humor. The reading level would suit my class and I order each student a copy to read. I feel it is important for our young citizens to take an interest in the formation of this great nation. We need to find books that keep them interested. Elizabeth Levy's style is just right. Thank you.

A refreshing and fun history suppliment!.......2003-12-14

The person who wrote the review before mine is obviously so "Daughters of the American Revolution" conservative that (s)he's completley lost his/her sense of humor. (S)he's also completely forgotten that MOST kids are smart enough to realize when something's obviously altered for humorous purposes.

This is a great series! (Some of the books are labeled "America's Horrible Histories", an offshoot of the popular "Horrible Histories" series.) Levy definitely edits the facts, but the point of this series is to take the most interesting and engaging people and events in history and reveal them for all their foibles, so that kids can develop critical thinking skills while having fun. These books work with that purpose in mind, although I wouldn't recommend teaching anything with them as the sole source of information. They pique kids' interest in history, and let them laugh.

The only criticism I have is that the level of the humor (about 7th grade) is, in some cases, above the reding level (about 5th).

Revolting Author.......2003-11-13

I saw this book at my son's book fair and the title caught my interest. All I needed to do was scan through it for about 5 minutes to become thoroughly disgusted with this woman's one-sided view of revisionist history. The book calls the early founders and fighters of our country a group of drunken, fighting gamblers, all of whom had whordes of slaves. She even takes pleasure in ridiculing and demeaning George Washington's mother (which is so historically relevant). The really sad part is that this book was labeled with a "scholastic" tag, which I assume makes it "good" for children of this age to read. They should be ashamed also, but I don't think so. Looking at their website there were more books in the history category of African Princesses and French Queens than of those who have built this country into what it is today. I strongly urge anyone considering any books sold under the "scholastic" label or this author to go elswhere. P.S. I would have given this book "zero" stars but the software on Amazon didn't allow it.

What a great, uplifting book - for all dog lovers! The authors captured great topics with light easy reading paragraphs on each topic. I have read it twice and plan to read it again. The book is like a big Dog Magazine with short interesting chapters!

Fun-Educational-Helpful.......1998-12-01

If not the best, it is one of the best dog books I have read and I have read several. The book is written with the reader in mind and flows as you read. I read cover to cover as soon as I opened it and now go back to get answers to questions that pop up. I just reread the chapter on Dog Allergies and while I had the book open took another look at Expensive Gifts to Buy Your Dog. Most dog lovers on my gift list this year will find this truly fun and educational book in their stocking. I hope there is a new one in the wings.Be sure to take the Dog Nut quiz at the end.Your dog will love you for buying this book.

This is a great beach-reading book. Each chapter is short (1-3 pages long) and discusses the coolest topics! if you love your dog, get this book! I am looking forward to the author's second edition!

A very different kind of movie guide..........2004-06-26

I got into movie-review books when wanting to get reviews from professional critics on movies of my favorite genere; horror/ slasher films. I first picked up Roger Eberts and Lenord Maltins books. Un-surprisingly, as most critics seem to despise any kind of slasher pic, they panned pretty much every movie I looked up. Frustrated by thier harshness, I next turned to the Video & DVD guide. I was pleastntly surprised. Whoever reviewed these movies gave films like, for example, "Halloween 2" and "Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter", three stars!, while Ebert and Multin gave them below two, probably just because they were gory, and they consider that a big no-no for any horror movie to be good. Most of the horror/ slasher pics. in this book got two stars or more (except for those truly un-deserving ones). It's as tho the critic were looking through a horror-fans perspective! I defintely reccomend this book!

An unreliable guide........2003-07-14

When you are a big movie fan it's a good thing to get yourself a reference book to keep track of all things film. Although this particular volume is not bad to have around it has some major flaws, especially in the review department. There seems to be no continuity from review to review. Because there are so many different people writing reviews there is no general opinion of what makes a good movie. How is it possible that the same source gives a thrown together mess like ARMAGEDDON three and a half stars and a superb satire like FIGHT CLUB a 'turkey' rating? The review of FIGHT CLUB is so far off it really seems that the author didn't even see the movie. There are more examples as well that induce some head scratching. With a guide such as this you need to have a kind of general opinion that gives you an idea of when to buy into the reviewers advice. I've bought the last five or six volumes of this guide and found the VIDEOHOUND GOLDEN MOVIE RETREIVER book to be far superior and chock full of extras that, over the years, this book didn't have or had to get rid of to put in more questionable movie reviews. I've actually rented movies based on highly recommended reviews within the VIDEO AND DVD GUIDE that were bad calls. Not bad if kept in the bathroom for quick reference but definitely not for coffee table presentation if you are a hard core movie buff.

Great guide.......2003-04-23

What I have always liked about VDG/VMG is the fact that you can find movies by actors. This is something other books dont offer.

Almost Perfect.......2003-02-27

The only reason this didn't get 5 stars is because it does not have as many movies as "Maltin's Movie and Video Guide." I buy "Maltin's Move and Video Guide" on odd numbered years and "Video and DVD Guide" by Martin and Porter on even numbered years. Maltin has the best, most comprehensive movie reviews and Martin and Porter have the best cast index. Between the two you can find everything you could possibly want!

5 STARS !!!.......2003-01-25

I've been turning to Martin and Porter for around 13 years now and all I can say is that I eagerly await each year's edition. This year sees the Video Movie Guide (VMG) renamed the Video & DVD Guide (VDG). When I first went looking for a paperback movie guide to keep on my desk, I spent a lot of time checking out the competition and found them all lacking in some area. Leonard (who is quite film savvy) and I just didn't see eye-to-eye at all. If he didn't like a certain genre, those type of movies didn't get a fair shake. Many of the others were geared for family viewing (which is fine but I've been there, done that, and have moved on to encompass a wide range of films). The only one that I found to be fair and have the technical info (color or b&w, running time, rating, subtitles, year released, cast, director, etc.) that I was looking for was VDG. I've watched the book's format change (for the better) over the years (I happily don't have to figure out the genre of the movie before looking it up anymore). After reading some of the other reviews, I understand the frustration of not having all of an actor's or director's films listed but if you read the Foreward/Introducton to VDG you'd know that only available (for rent and/or purchase) titles are covered (at the time of publication). This is why I've kept my old VMGs for reference. Nobody seems to mind when a book or DVD has an incomplete filmography on an actor or director so what's the beef?
