Explore Barbados is a guide and travel overview for the island of Barbados. This book includes a wide range of information, everything from background knowledge on the island's natural and cultural environment through places to stay while on the island to interesting things to do at every stop along the way.

There are six sections in Explore Barbados: Introduction; Practicalities; Bridgetown and St. Michael's Parish; The Northern Parishes and the Scotland District; The Southern Parishes; and Accommodation Finder. The introduction section contains an overview about Barbados and the general Caribbean area. This detailed information includes land, climate, flora, fauna, history, government, economy, culture, and religion of this area.

The next chapter, Practicalities, contains contacts and general information on transportation, food, accommodations, and potential activities while enjoying Barbados. Each entry contains a short paragraph about each of these general topics including contacts and potential costs.

The rest of the sections in Explore Barbados focus on particular parts of the Island. The first portion of each section describes a little about the particular island region including the history. After this overview, specific examples of transportation, accommodation, restaurants, shopping, tourist information, services, and sights are depicted in detail. Each entry contains a short paragraph about the establishment including contacts and potential costs. Better than Lonely Planet.......2007-01-16

I do quite a bit of traveling and often buy a Lonely Planet guide as a basic reference. Lately, however, I've become somewhat jaded by its formulaic coverage and superficial approach. I'm also skeptical about how they go about choosing which accomodations and restaurants to include in their books.

Pariser's book at first glance looks remarkably like a Lonely Planet guide--the same format and much the same information. However, Pariser puts more of himself into it and the book clearly is a labor of love. Pariser's guide compares to Lonely Planet like a family restaurant to McDonalds.

Don't Leave Home Without It.......2006-04-06

If you are planning to visit the exotic, mysterious land of British-ruled Barbados, you will be met by a blend of English and African cultures, temperatures that can only be experienced near the equator and waters so blue you may wonder if you're seeing a mirage. Not too helpful...........2005-01-17

I did not find this book to be helpful in providing information specific to Barbados that I could not find in any free tourist booklet on the island. There is a whole page on "Beach Boys"... there are local men anywhere you may go on vacation that will try to pick up vacationing women. This is not information specific to Barbados. There is a whole page on "What to take": Shoes and socks, underwear,swimsuit,soap,sunscreen,comb,shaving kit,etc,etc. Please!!! I stayed at the Coconut Court Beach Resort which is one of the oldest and most respected family run hotels on the island and it is not even listed in the accomodation sections. I would save your money and pick up the multitude of free guides available on the island.

After having liced in B'dos for almost 6 months, I can honestly say that this is the most comprehensive guide around. On addition to discussing the culture, the book provides information that in not otherwise readily available unless you spend time with the Bajans.

The theme, in every aspect of design, from furniture to graphics, lighting to fashion, is pluralism. Look, Read, Think.......2003-07-23

If you can't make it to New York to see the actual Triennial show at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, then this book is your best bet for a provocative survey of contemporary design. This is particularly true if you think of design as a big idea connecting print, interaction, motion, products, architecture and environments. You'll find a good balance of critical writing with images in this book. So it is something both to look at and to read and think about.

How to be British #101.......2002-01-23

I was given this book as a Christmas gift and have to say it's a great book, full of high-quality pictures and just the right amount of text for an evening read at the end of the day.

It did, however, remind me of the Sinatra song "You've either got or you haven't got style..", because, despite the excellent quality, the book begins as a description of interior design (which is good), but then appears to deviate into a 'style-guide', including the correct 'set menu' for a picnic, the brand of lawnmower used by the Queen and Prince of Wales, down to a section on the removal of Wellington Boots!!! Although the authors have been very thorough in their research, this part of the book diminishes the effectiveness of the section on interior design, in my opinion. I believe that 'British Tradition' is a little more flexible than is presented here.

Some would say that true understanding is not only knowing the rules but also knowing how and when they can be broken - if that's true, then this book is a great primer on the former. It's certainly an interesting read.

The late author made a start on a revision b ut had to abandon the task because of failing health. We undertook the revision very largely out of respect and regard for Dr. Henrici. We were aided by beginnings of a revision, which, however, were entirely concerned with the first three chapters. Chapter II was prepared by Henrici and is inserted almost ex actly as he wrote it. However, scattered notes in his personal marked copy and especially the memory of many conversations indicated the general nature of the revision which he hoped to make. Mere verbal changes, a modernization of nomenclature, a few deletions and insertions of new material were found insufficient. A complete rewriting was essential, and a considerable change in ar rangement of topics seemed advisable. Two entirely new chapters dealing with material scarcely mentioned in the first edition have been added. Some deletions of portions of the old book, which ex perience had shown were of limited value, were made. In spite of all this, however, we have attempted to produce a book in the spirit of the original book namely a discussion of molds, yeasts, and actinomycetes for students of bacteriology. Like Henrici, we in clude in the term students many individuals who have completed their formal education. It was for such students that Henrici callfed his first edition a handbook. Dr. Henrici was very insistent that, for their own good, bacteriol ogists would do well to have some working knowledge of mycology. Inasmuch as most books on fungi are written for the botanist, the agriculturist, the phytopathologist, and others, the emphasis, in gen eral, is often on those forms of least interest to the bacteriologist, and the forms of greatest interest to him are likely to be ignored or merely mentioned. Hero the emphasis is reversed. The stress on medical and industrial applications of mycology has been retained in this edition and has been intensified.. Moreover, Henrici was of the opinion that bacteriologists, whatever their special field, should have some knowledge of the morphology of fungi classification, cytology, genetics, life cycles, and so on so that they might better vi PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION understand and more intelligently discuss the many problems of the morphology of bacteria. He also maintained that an elementary knowledge of mycology, including a vocabulary, should be a special requisite for writers on variation and so-called life cycles in bac teria. He frequently predicted that, if and when sexuality in bac teria was demonstrated and proved, the persons responsible would be individuals with some knowledge of modern mycology. We, therefore, have not cut the discussions of life cycles in Chapter I and sexuality of yeasts in a later chapter. Rather we have, as Henrici explicitly intended, expanded them considerably...

Helpful tips for a beginner.......2006-11-21

This book is great for the person just beginning to explore the idea of eliminating debt and maximizing their money. My husband and I have been working to get out of debt for the past year and already practice many of the suggestions in this book. But I took away several new tidbits of helpful info. The chapters and sections are brief, so it's easy to skim the book in a night or two. I particularly liked the chapters on insurance and wills, subjects we're just beginning to explore.

If you want to get out of debt and make a million bucks, write a book on how to get out of debt and make a million bucks. This stinks. Dave Ramsey is the only way to go folks.

Save Your Money.......2004-08-18

Save your money and skip this book. As stated in other reviews, the title of the book is misleading. The author mentions here and there how she got out of debt but there was nothing for the reader to grasp onto and use as a course of action. The tid-bits of information she gives for saving money are obvious and boring if the reader has already been reading books on the "get out of debt" subject.

I purchased this book a little over two years ago when I first saw the author on television. Since then, my husband and I have referred to it daily to find ways to save money. If we keep it up, we should be out of debt in two more years. So, we both think that this is the best book that we have ever read about getting out of debt. If this author puts out a second edition, we hope to be the first to buy it. Thank you author for writing such a wonderful book!!!

I have read a lot of books about debt recovery, personal finances, budgeting, and saving, and this book has been by far the worst. To begin with, regardless of how the title sounds, the author doesn't actually give any tips for how to organize or budget in order to reduce the debt that you currently have. The book is basically a list of money saving tips, which would be fine if the tips were useful and applicable to ones daily life. Unfortunately those that Ms. Gabriel shares are neither.

Her tips range from ultra-restrictive suggestions such as never go into a mall or retail store again to tips that would only apply to specific and seldom occuring (at least I hope) situations such as decide not to get tattoos or don't throw lavish funerals for your loved ones to just down right impractical suggestions such as move in with family or friends for a year and rent out your house so that you can double what you are paying on your mortgage. If you are looking for a book of practical, manageable money saving tips that you can apply to your everyday life then this is definitely not that book.

This book has wonderful pictures and great information - everything I would expect from a DK book. The breeds are not set up in the AKC groups, although it is very easy to find the breed you are looking for. I was just disappointed to receive a book that was only 3 inches high! It's a great book for children to look through, however, as it fits well in their hands.

This is a great book for the seasoned artist as well as the beginning collector. The photography is great and the text is very readable. It's a pleasure to carry with and read while traveling, as well as to study the photographs for ideas. I enjoyed reading about the artists, especially the ones I already knew; and learning about the ones I was'nt familar with. The photography was a pleasure, as well as the the text. I would recommend this book to anyone intested in teddy bears and artists!

I think this chap has a problem..........2005-02-28

...with the great female stars, he has written many biographies of Hollywood, Broadway and West End stars and yet there is a marked difference. His books on male stars are well researched, celebratory and complimentary. In contrast his books on female stars are either scant, slight or plain nasty.
Depending on the sex of your star of choice I would give him a wide birth, even if the star is male I would consider his credibilty; which is not great in my opinion. This book is scant, silly and a real missed opportunity. It does not do the great lady any justice whatsoever!

Not what I was looking for........2003-08-06

I bought this book based on the description "lavish pictorial biography". It has only 15 pictures in it. I'm returning it and shopping for a different book with more pictures.
