Customer Reviews:
Terrific Guide for Visiting or Wine Shopping!.......2005-06-03
I used this beautiful and informative book to plan a fabulous Yamhill County, Oregeon wine tasting day with friends. The book had wonderful, accurate information about an incredible number of Oregon wineries. I am pretty fussy about wine and go tasting frequently in California. The authors of this book gave great recommendations and the wineries we picked based upon their endorsements were all top-notch. No disappointments! We left the book with our friends in Oregon, but I am buying another copy to keep at home to use for navigating the Oregon section of our local wine stores. One caveat: the authors find something nice to say about every winery they review, and they cover a lot of them. So, if you are looking for a great pinot, and the review for a particular winery focuses on the lovely garden, you may want to visit elsewhere!

A book about graphic design is a delicate thing that pits its own presence against its (graphic) content. 365: AIGA Year in Design 21 is no exception. Beginning with a tribute to 2000 AIGA medal recipients P. Scott and Laurie Haycock Makela and other awards, it devotes a large section to selected work in communication graphics and finishes with "50 books, 50 covers." 365 has more weight and seriousness than one would normally expect, feeling less like a yearly journal than a comprehensive art catalog, partly due to its own design. Because the text is so small as to be illegible, and the design is based on a puzzling scheme of full pages, smaller postage-stamp-sized filled boxes, and a cryptic notation system, the material is so controlled that the physicality of the work is lost and the information is hard to read. The work itself is great, and worth the effort, but the book requires patience. --Juliette Cezzar
Book Description
365 is the American Institute of Graphic Art's annual presentation of the best in American design, and features cutting-edge projects selected by a jury of pre-eminent designers and design specialists in the organization's Communication Graphics 21 and 50 Books/50 Covers of 1999 competitions. Communication Graphics is the premier design competition in the US, open to any and every form of graphic work, from traditional print and packaging to the most recent and innovative interactive technologies. 50 Books/50 Covers has recognized excellence in book design and production since 1923, and its entries include books and book covers ranging from trade, reference, and juvenile books to museum publications, encompassing standard as well as limited edition and special format books. Conceived by AIGA in conjunction with renowned San Francisco-based designer Jennifer Sterling, 365 serves up essays that contextualize the ever-changing shape of contemporary graphic design, including a text that critiques the New Minimalism movement for its conflation of consumerism and spirituality, and a defense of the printed book in the face of the ''post-literate'' Digital Age. In addition, AIGA's 2000 Gold Medallists--Scott and Laurie Makela, Michael Vanderbyl, and Fred Seibert--are profiled in insightful biographical essays and retrospective portfolios. This year's stunning plastic-encased volume is sure to become a design object collector's item.
Customer Reviews:
Sterling is a genius.......2004-11-23
OK, OK, it's true... everything they said is true... Sterling crops the living heck out of everyone's work... but the presentation as design is beautiful... Honestly, if people are that dissapointed because of this, I think they are being petty. This book is gorgeous, and with 500 pages, you are bound to find something that inspires you... I love this book, but feel the cropping issue only deducts one star, NOT 4! That's not being generous... this book is worth it IMO. Blows away every other AIGA book without question. Who wants boring presentation anyway? Stick with Typography 24 if you want boring. This is for fans of ATTIK and TOLLESON, and of course Sterling.
art not design.......2003-09-04
This book is a good example of where art and design go their separate ways. It's a beautiful book, clearly put together by a very creative individual. But it's "designed" very poorly, it doesn't serve it's function. It's hard to read, you can't see the pieces it's supposed to highlight, and the binding breaks very easily because of the chosen materials. Again, they look great, but they don't do their job. Design that's honored by the AIGA should live up to higher standards in my opinion.
good typographic inspiration.......2002-11-08
Sterling miss 2 stars for the cropping, its true that I can't see what the winners' works look like.
But the cropping itself makes the content more interesting.
Think different, .. its amazing that I enjoy reading this book more than any other AIGA publications. I don't get any inspirations from the works. I do get more how Sterling thinks..
Try and use this..I dare you!.......2002-08-27
The book itself looks wonderful, with a nice, strong design on all of the pages. The sad part is this design comes at a price, and that price is the content it's trying to display is completely truncated, and ineffectual. As far as inspiration books go, this is definitely one of the worst books I've purchased. You can tell that there are some real gems located within, but the sad part is you only see the top corner, or little snippets. Maybe next time AIGA should focus on letting us see why the winners are in the book, instead of trying to make an artsty statement in and of itself.
Eeeesh!.......2002-04-18
How you'd rate this depends on whether you're rating it as an object or on it's content. What was AIGA's purpose here? I thought it was to showcase the award winning work within not just Jennifer Sterling's work. I left this book on the shelf at my local bookstore.
There are plenty of books on the market sold as objects. I don't see the purpose of disrespecting other peoples work to create an object in what is supposed to be a showcase to honour what they have done.
I like Jennifer Sterling design work but if she wants to sample other peoples work she should record a hip hop album next time. And why did AIGA approve this?
Book Description
“I wrote and illustrated this book to help every inquisitive birder, from novice to expert. Whether you can identify six birds or six hundred, you’ll be a better birder if you have a grounding in the real nuts and bolts of what birds look like, and your skills will be even sharper if you know exactly what to look for and how to record what you see.” —David Allen Sibley
The Sibley Guide to Birds and The Sibley Guide to Bird Life and Behavior are both universally acclaimed as the new standard source of species information. And now David Sibley, America’s premier birder and best-known bird artist, takes a new direction; in Sibley’s Birding Basics he is concerned not so much with species as with the general characteristics that influence the appearance of all birds and thus give us the clues to their identity.
To create this guide, David Sibley thought through all the skills that enable him to identify a bird in the few instants it is visible to him. Now he shares that information, integrating an explanation of the identification process with many painted and drawn images of details (such as a feather) or concepts.
Birding Basics begins by reviewing how one can get started as a birder: the equipment necessary, where and when to go birding, and perhaps most important, the essential things to look for when birds appear in the field. Using many illustrations, David Sibley reviews all the basic concepts of bird identification and then describes the variations (of shape, size, and color) that can change the appearance of a bird over time or in different settings. And he issues a warning about “illusions and other pitfalls”—and advice on avoiding them.
The second part of the book, also plentifully illustrated, deals with another set of clues, the major aspects of avian life that differ from species to species: feathers (color, arrangement, shape, molt), behavior and habitat, and sounds.
This scientifically precise, beautifully illustrated volume distills the essence of David Sibley’s own experience and skills, providing a solid introduction to “naming” the birds. With Sibley as your guide, when you learn how to interpret what the feathers, the anatomical structure, the sounds of a bird tell you—when you know the clues that show you why there’s no such thing as “just a duck”—birding will be more fun, and more meaningful. An essential addition to the Sibley shelf!
Customer Reviews:
Easy to use... which is good for me. .......2006-12-21
I'm a novice birder, to say the least. I like Sibley's guides because they are straight forward and easy to navigate. The drawings are all done by Sibley himself, not a team of various artists... believe me, it matters. Birds are shown from various angles, by sex, and at various stages of life. I think any Sibley guide would make a lovely (different) house warming gift along with, perhaps, a bird feeder.
Happy birding!
There's more to birding than found in the standard Field Guide.......2005-10-31
Almost every field guide gives a an introduction to the skills that need to be learned if one wants to develop any proficiency in finding and identifying birds in the field. In this book David takes it a whole lot further and has produced a book that covers all the skills needed and would be a great asset to any birder,be they a novice or a long time seasoned birder. It is not a book to replace the normal field guide but instead is a super addition to hone the skills of any birder, regardless of their skills.I won't try to cover what is in this book as other reviewers have done a fair job of it already.
What this book does is to explain why a bird was found where it was,why it was not something else, why is it such and such when it only remotely resembles the picture in the field guide, how could you tell,it's too dark to see the colors, and on and on.
You will also learn the many subtle differences and field marks to look for ,especially if you want to try to describe a bird to someone else, write it up in your journal or even to help if you listen to and hope to understand some more experienced birder describing a bird you may even be looking at.
One way to show what this book is all about might be to compare it to Baseball or Bridge. The standard books tell you all the rules and finer points of the game;this book tells you how to play the game.
Don't let the fact that this book has only 154 pages and not very expensive fool you.It is very unique and would
be welcomed by any birder who doesn't already have it.
I must say, however, that this is not the type of 'bird book' to buy if you just want to buy one book.It is definately the book to buy to go along with any other Field Guide that covers all the birds in an area;such as National Geographic's Birds of North America,Peterson's Field Guides,American Bird Conservancy's field guide to All the Birds of North America,Kaufman's Birds of North America,Sibley's Guides or any of the other excellent guides available.
The best introduction I've seen.......2004-08-31
This is the best instruction I've ever seen, printed or otherwise, on learning how to bird. It includes not only basic visual identification skills, but also the basics of how to bird by sound. Sibley teaches the feather groups and anatomy, plumage variations, molting patterns, and effects of lighting that make some indentifications so difficult. I would recommend it to any aspiring birder.
Excellent but strikes me as somewhat odd.......2004-04-05
Let me depart a bit from the other glowing reviews to point out something I think is slightly odd about this book. While the book has many outstanding features, I'm not sure it is the ideal "birding basics" book.
The first half of the book has some terrific information but is often light on content (the equipment section, birding by geography section, finding more info section) as well as some glaring gaps (breeding habits, migration patterns, birding history in North America). It's one thing to tell a beginning birder how the gestalt of a White Crowned Sparrow is different from that of a White Throated Sparrow but does the beginning birder even know when to expect either in their area? The ending on ethics and conservation is so small it almost plays to the criticism that birders are more in it for the sport than for birds themselves.
The second half of the book is a stunning review of the external structure of birds. It is better than many ornithology texts in this regard. Everything you could ever need to know about feather structure, molt, proportional differences and color perception is presented along with an excellent introduction to taxonomy and bird song.
Sibley is obviously playing to his strength here which is fine because what he knows, he really knows if you get my point. The art work is great, of course.
I don't want to come across as knocking this book. I own it, enjoy it and have learned a great deal from it. I recommend that you buy it. I'm just not sure it will serve this generation of up and comming birders as the ideal "basics" book the way Jack Connor's "The Complete Birder" did for many in the prior generation.
What do you think of a basics book that can take the time to touch on a birds nasal bristles or gestalt but omit a basic discussion on migration or breeding? Maybe it's me but it strikes me as a bit odd. I think the second half could have been published as part of a book called "Sibley's Ornithology for Birders" or something to that effect.
Great Introduction to nany aspects of birding.......2003-02-24
I came into this book with some interest in learning to identify birds around the yard to a greater extent. This is the first book that I've seen to go beyond the basics of shape and color. It's actually a virtual biology lesson on birds with fine details about feathers, and molting among other topics. Very detailed materials that help the reader understand how to see the parts of the bird beyond quick impressions in order to make identifications. But I also gained a new insight into an animal that I took for granted just seeing every day. Sibley is an incredible artist and liberally demonstrates his concepts with sketches and drawings of a wide variety of birds. The combination of beautiful art, and clear, educational writing makes one of the best introductions I've ever seen to birds, and how to know and appreciate them. Highly recommended for the casual as well as serious bird enthusiast.

Book Description
Born in Vienna in 1890, Gertrud Bodenwieser became a leading exponent of Ausdruckstanz (Expressionist Dance) during the 1920s and 1930s, developing a definitive personal style and a philosophy of dance that distinguished her from all her contemporaries. In 1938 she emigrated to Australia to start her career afresh with the remaining nucleus of her company from Nazi-occupied Austria.
In this collection of writings (initially compiled by Bettina Vernon and posthumously completed by her husband Charles Warren) each contributor highlights Bodenwieser's achievements from a different perspective, with reminiscences from her pupils and company members, together with scholarly studies.

Handbook for Managers, not investors.......2005-10-22
Although helpful and well written, the book appears more appropriate for executives or managers of operating companies that may be faced with bankruptcy prospects. A good overview of how the process unfolds, players, objectives, legal issues, and procedures is provided. Managers at a financially distressed operation typically carry a different toolbox of experience and skills, and therefore, this book would be well worth the introduction to the topic.
However, for investors this book is somewhat superficial and lacks the roll-up-your-sleeves education neccessary for investing. In most cases, senior management is sacked because creditors understandably have little confidence in those who may have mismanaged or were responsible for the business's failure in the first place. Thus, the audience that I presumed above may not be appropriate nor the majority of individuals who surface after a Plan.
For investors or external parties, I urge you to consider:
"Distressed Debt Analysis: Strategies for Speculative Investors" by Stephen G. Moyer. It is more expensive, but its a much better book on this topic. Moyer is a stronger writer and seems to be more experienced in the matter than G. Newton. Both books do not include the 2005 Bankruptcy Code reforms, so you may wish to brush up on that separately.
Very practical reference, "thin" on theory and case studies.......2004-01-24
Very useful and convenient reference guide for restructuring bankers / distressed debt investors. Probably too generic for experienced bankruptcy attorneys. The text and examples are efficiently presented and the author does a superb job of distilling the bankruptcy code into an easy-to-read format. The chapter on valuation is nothing more than the common stuff you read in any corporate finance book. A case study and a more extensive discussion on bankruptcy term sheets and negotiation tactics would have made this book more praiseworthy.

GOOD FOR DIE-HARD FANS & SCHOLARS, BUT NOT FOR GENERAL FANS.......1999-07-09
Gehring's book is like a text book. Like a thesis. It's good on that level; but there's always the ultimate question: Why analyze comedy at all? Once you start to explain it on a serious, scientific level, you've drained it from all it's fun. This book will help understand W.C. Fields & Groucho's worth in the history of Comedy and Satire, but it won't win them new fans. I love Groucho & W.C. Fields; I think they were brilliant, geniuses and true artists. But this book with it's text book, scientific style, is drab and makes you wonder what is so funny about them. If you really want to know and enjoy W.C. Fields & Groucho, watch their films.
