Book Description
Walter Starr, Jr., was a life member of the Sierra Club who ardently loved the High Sierra. He could not rest until he had seen it all - and then he wanted others to see it, to enjoy it, and to be inspired by it as he had been. So he made notes of practical directions to the John Muir Trail, a high-country trail that runs from Mount Whitney to Yosemite National Park. Although Starr did not live to take part in the final preparation of his guidebook, so thoroughly was his work done that it was possible to publish it very nearly in the form that he had planned. The preparation was done by his father, Walter Starr, who also was well acquainted with High Sierra trails.
In the introduction to his book, Walter Starr, Jr., wrote: "By joining the United States Geological Survey maps of the region from Yosemite National Park to the headwaters of the Kern - a distance of more than one hundred and fifty miles - one will observe a continuous strip of blue lakes running down the map immediately west of the Sierra Crest. Through the heart of this blue strip winds the famous John Muir trail with laterals leading to it from the east and west, some of them vying with the Muir Trail itself in scenic grandeur."
Acting on the suggestion contained in these lines of his son, Walter Starr had a map made for the book showing the trails and approaches the author so well describes.
This classic guide covers:
Keys to trail descriptions and map references
How to obtain a wilderness permit
Yosemite National Park Region
Middle Fork of San Joaquin River Region
South Fork of San Joaquin River Region
North, Middle, and South Fork of Kings River Region
Sequoia National Park Region

Pete Starr.......2005-04-02
My dad and I hiked the length of the JMT many years ago. At that time Starr's Guide was invaluable. In terms of its accuracy, we encountered only one minor hiccup and it was probably our own fault. We didn't recognize Senger Creek when we passed it and we kept looking for it for a few miles when it was actually behind us. Hiking a few extra miles at the end of the day was hard but it all worked out as we took a layover day for some fishing on the middle fork of the San Joaquin River.
For more information on "Pete" Starr, check out William Alsup's book, "Missing in the Minarets: The Search for Walter A. Starr Jr."
As history, a must, but not up to date.......2004-03-01
There's no doubt that Robinson's guide is one of the great books written about the JMT, no one disputes this. It's nicely written, informative and gives background on the trail not found in other guides. However (and this is a huge "but"), this book is *not* useful for planning a present-day thru hike of the John Muir Trail. It was written in the mid 1930's and so much has changed in the intervening 70 years. Locations to trailheads, water sources and resupplying points and all drastically changed since 1936.
Most people who thru hike the JMT want all books every published about it, to remind ourselves of our accomplishment. This book definitely deserves a hallowed spot on your bookshelf, it just doesn't belong in your pack in these modern times.
The best JMT guide--ever.......2002-12-20
Having grown up in the John Muir Wilderness as a Boy Scout, I can attest to the greatness of the guide. Its size and intricate, step ny step trial guidance is second-to-none. An absolute must-read for anyone even remotely contemplating a trek between Mount Whitney and Yosemite. Despite the fact that the information in the guide originates in the 1930's, it is still relevant today and provides a very sound planning tool for Scouters and "civilians" alike. I recommend it highly for another reason: It fits in the outer pocket of my backpack!
The prolog about Walter Starr is amazing........1999-05-18
The problem with this guide is it was written in the 30's and the trailhead info is not totally reliable. For hardcore JMT fans this is a must-read.

Book Description
Description: 365 is the American Institute of Graphic Art's annual presentation of the best in American design, and features cutting-edge projects that were selected by a jury of preeminent designers and design critics in 2001. New this year, America's largest and most esteemed design organization has transformed its "Communications Graphics" and "50 Books/50 Covers" competitions into a suite of 12 individual, narrowly focused, independently judged competitions, including: branding applications, design and typography, environmental graphics, experience design, and package design. Conceived by AIGA in conjunction with award-winning Chicago-based book designers studio blue, this year's version of 365 will include 12 essays that contextualize the ever-changing shape of contemporary graphic design and a special section that details statistical findings on creativity and the design process. In addition, AIGA's 2001 gold medalists Samuel Antupit and Paula Scher will be profiled in insightful biographical essays and retrospective portfolios.

Get out your magnifying glass.......2003-07-14
Annual awards recipients' biographical material as always appetizing and interesting. However, the following sections depicting current work focus on first-person design-incantations rather than the work. Due to smaller format (reduced dimensions) it's difficult to see the work examples and all nuance is for the most part completely lost.
A surprising amount of lengthy unilluminating explanatory text.
A very odd section attempting to illustrate very simple survey results in a bizarrely complex manner.
I can't use this book as a design reference as I do with previous AIGA annuals, so I'm going through the bother of returning it.
Book Description
Here are the yarns of a true cowboy for those who have in their blood either a touch of larceny, an affection for the Old West, or better yet, both.
These twenty tales add up to a true account of Ben K. Green’s experiences around the corrals, livery stables, and wagon yards of the West. Green was a veterinarian who took down his shingle and went into horse trading, in what he imagined would be retirement. No stranger to the saddle, Green claims to have “with these bloodshot eyes and gnarled hands measured over seventy thousand horses.” His tales range from tricks to make an old horse seem young (at least until the poor creature died from the side effects of the scam) to a recipe for making a dapple-gray mule from a bucket of paint and a chicken’s egg. So you want to go into the horse business? You can learn the knavery, skill, salesmanship, and pure con man hokum of horse trading here, in a book every westerner or horse fancier should have on hand.

Readin' makes good horse sense.......2007-04-07
I nearly always give my books away---which was what I did with Horse Tradin' over 40 years ago. Now I wanted to give a copy to a grand niece and was not surprised that hard copies were nearly unavailable. I was pleased to see that someone had the good horse sense to publish this Green classic in paperback for contemporary readers. Even so I paid up for a used hardback and just finished rereading the book. It would have been worth twice the price.
Probably only people that now live in rural areas can appreciate the freedom and casualness of life before World War ll. You would never know from reading these stories that Ben Green was an educated professional man. He was a self effacing gentleman that may no longer exist. Other reviewers have covered the content of the book and there is no need for my repeating. Do yourself a favor and get and read this book.
I only wish that someone would make a movie of 3 or 4 of these wonderful stories. When you read the book you will know what I mean.
Would you Buy a Horse from this Man? .......2005-05-04
Ben Green's book "Horse Tradin'" will be enjoyed by about anyone from Texas or with an interest in cowboys and horses. Green was born in 1912 and this book tells stories of his horse tradin' experiences as a boy and young man in the late 1920s and 1930s before the automobile made the profession of horse trader obsolete. Green was a bit more than the simple cowboy he portrays in this book. Research into his life tells us that he was educated in Veterinary medicine at Cornell and in England, so he didn't spend all his time trying to make a buck by sharp trades.
One suspects that Green, like all good traders, stretches the truth a bit in some of these 20 stories, but there is an air of authenticity and affection for horses and cowboying that is hard to resist. "I rode into Mineral Wells one day on a new dun horse with black mane and tail that weighed about eleven hundred pounds and had a nice way of carrying himself -- a six-year old, stylish enough..." Now that's a description of a man who knows his horses. Green tells of his shenaningans as a trader, and also of the times that he was taken himself -- by a southern gentleman who sells him a blind horse and by an Indian in New Mexico who sold him wild horses tranquilized by "sleepy" grass to make them appear tame.
Green makes you long for a time gone by, capturing the feel of a cold Texas morning, the taste of "bachelor's grub" like beans, beef, and potatoes, and the virtues of "hard-twisted, ill-tempered, unbroke Mexican mules." Texans bought this book in vast numbers when it was first published and it deserves to be recalled as an outstanding bit of Western Americana.

Great Horse Stories.......2000-09-12
I read this book many years ago and am glad to see it reissued. Even my non horsey kids enjoyed the stories. It's even worth rereading.
Green Not Hokey.......2000-06-25
Whoever said that Green's stories were hokey must be young, and not appreciative of bootstrap operations. Ben Green was a self-made man, sizing up opportunities as an enterprising youngster. He shows determination, he demonstrates decision-making skills, and he always plays within the framework, ever flavored with a fine-tuned sense of humor. In short, he's the sort who made this country great, and what we are woefully short of in today's crop of youngsters. I know; I'm a retired middle school teacher. I'd recommend this book to any of my former students, except most of them don't like to read.
Strange Short Stories.......2000-04-27
This is a book of odd little tales written with a western "flair". The line drawings are nice but the stories were occasionally a bit hokey for my taste. Good for those who like old westerns and beans from a can on the grill.

Book Description
From the same corral that produced the widely loved Horse Tradin’, Ben K. Green has rounded up fifteen new yarns filled with the ornery yet irresistible style that has earned his books a place in classic Western Americana.
Some More Horse Tradin’ recounts the dealings of a whole slew of craggy old-timers and rangy characters. See them match wits as they trade well-bred mares, snorty-like range colts, and used-to-be-bad horses from the tumbleweed plains. Admire the old-time knavery, skill, and salesmanship in such tales as “Gittin’ Even,” “Brethren Horse Traders,” “Mule Schoolin’,” and “Water Treatment and the Sore-Tailed Bronc.” Ride along with Green, and he’ll tell you what he knows about horseflesh--but keep your wits about you, and hang on to your wallet.

Horsetrading.......2007-04-03
My Dad traded Horses and Ben green is the real deal and is a superb storyteller. All of Ben Green's 5 books are excellent reading. Enjoy stories of a time and place that is woefully gone.
Some More Horse Tradin'.......2007-02-19
I loved the book. Ben Green gives a wonderful peek into an era gone by. He uses the lingo of the day and the stories are wonderful to anyone interested in horses and days when there were more horses than cars.
Ozark Gal.......2007-01-31
This is such a fun book to read that it is hard to put down. The reader learns so many "tricks" of horse trading through Ben Greens stories. It is so enjoyable you will want to buy his other books also.
Some More Horse Tradin'.......2000-09-25
This was an excellent book. I greatly enjoyed each and every adventure that Ben K. Green takes you through in the book. In a time where everything is done the easy way it is great to be able to look back and see how things realy used to be done. Through this book you are able to get a very clear picture of the old west. I loved reading about all the different ways the horse traders thought of to skam each other and somehow they both thought they were getting a good deal. I thought this book was great and was not able to put it down once I picked it up. I can't wait to read more by Ben K. Green.

Rodale's Flower Garden Problem Solver: Annuals, Perennials, Bulbs, and Roses.......2007-04-03
Excellent resource for Annuals, Perennials, Bulbs, and Roses care and maintenance.
Solving flower garden problems organically.......2000-05-02
If you consider yourself an organic gardener, this book is for you. There are three main sections to the book. The first part lists specific plants and is divided into chapters for annuals, perennials, bulbs and roses. Each flower has the following information: description, ideal environments, propagation, general care, most common insect pests and most common diseases. This is the part of the book I've found most helpful when there's a problem with a plant. Just look up the plant and locate the problem signs and the book gives suggestions on how to solve the problem organically. The second section has three chapters; Insects, Diseases and Animal Pests. Here pests are described, and information is given as to most obvious symptoms, best control strategies, monitoring, preventing damage and plants affected. The last section is a chapter on gardening basics. There are two things I don't like about this book. As many pests affect more than one type of plant, there is a lot of repeated information. A much greater variety of plants could be included if, when listing the symptoms, the author referred you to the pest section for problem solving. The second is that it would be nice to have pictures instead of line drawings to make identification easier. Overall, I enjoy this book and refer to it frequently to solve garden problems.
