Celebrating its 10th anniversary, "Our House" presents six stories, all told from the point of view of a child living in a Leavittown house. Starting in 1948, a young boy moves into a brand-new house in a brand-new type of neighborhood. Leavittown was a planned community, a subdivision, full of quickly built, nearly identical, inexpensive houses that were perfect for the post WWII new and growing families.

The stories span 48 years in Leavittown, covering important American issues such as the Vietnam War, personal tragedies such as the loss of a sibling, and everyday discoveries such as uncovering one's special talents. The children are typical, everyday kids presented with the sheen of being depicted by a strong writer. This would be a terrific read-alound for a 4th grade classroom, offering lots of food for thought and discussion.

Great for learning about towns, especially Long Island, NY.......2000-07-20

I thought this book was not only a great story but informative. Each decade starting with the 1940's has a different set of characters relating to that time period. The short stories are emotional but not too detailed for being a short story. From the days when only one person on the block had televisions to how you felt when you just wanted to move away from your neighborhood so badly it hurt. The stories include time relevant events such as the Viet Nam War and the end of WWII. A great book to teach history, family life, or personal growth. It is a great book to read for pleasure as well.

A Great and Very Real bunch of lab stories.......2000-02-07

This is a kind of book you'd want to take with you to work, and read a story on your break and at lunch. The stories are short, some funny such as the one where much researching was done to buy a pup and it happened the pup picked the owner instead. Some are sad. All are real. I have a lab, and have had other dogs. I identify with all the dogs I've had with this book. If you read this book away from your dog, you'll just want to go home, hug them all and thank them for being them.

Being a labrador retriever owner since 1997, I was toucbed at the authors depiction of the way an animal can become so much a part of an individual's life. The book spoke of the hardships of training a lab puppy, to the struggles of dealing with the loss of an old friend. Any lab owner can agree, most of the stories found in this particular book, their lab has done at one time or another. In this book a labrador is more than just a companion. Great Book! I would recommend to all lab owners..

The Underappreciated Master at his best.......2000-06-27

Even now, after his death, Leonard Bernstein remains, at least in my estimation, one of American Musical Theatre's most underappreciated masters. The Three Dance Episodes from On The Town, and the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story provide ample evidence that there's much to appreciate. On The Town tells about three navy GIs on liberty in New York during World War Two. West Side Story, of course, is Bernstein's megahit about a Romeo and Juliet among Hell's Kitchen street gangs in the 1950s. Both scores create an engaging blend of Musical Comedy, Jazz, and dance music inspired by Stravinsky and Copland. These selections amply demonstrate both this music's complexity and popular appeal. Please don't misunderstand; these dance selections are no more muzak Bernstein than the Carmen suites are muzak Bizet. Anyone who buys sheet music regularly nowadays knows that music can be pricey. Boosey and Hawkes editions aren't exceptional in that regard. For approximately the same price, the Norton Scores anthology contains, among all its treasures, the West Side Story Dances. The trouble is, Norton doesn't have the On The Town dances. The Boosey and Hawkes scores were re-edited prior to the composer's death. The pages are easy to read, the paper's acid free, the softcover is durable. So, if you're a Bernstein freak, like me, perhaps you should bite the bullet.

A musical experience is marked by the synthesis of passion and rationality, emotion and understanding, and body and mind. Ferrara demonstrates that each method of musical analysis confines musical significance to a single level: formal methods explain musical syntax; phenemonological methods describe the sound-in-time; and hermeneutic approaches interpret referential meanings. Ferrara devises an "eclectic method" that provides bridges for musical sound, form, and reference. In response to the multiplicity of levels of musical significance, Ferrara's eclectic method draws upon a wide-ranging number of conventional and non-conventional approaches to musical analysis which results in a dialectic of methods. Referential meanings are concretized, clarified, and delimited by the degree to which they can be grounded in the sound-in-time and formal elements; the latter are reexamined, expanded, and enriched by referential insights. In the last two chapters, the eclectic method is tested through analyses of works by Bela Bartok and David Zinn. This book is intended for trained music listeners and performers, music analysts, musicologists, and those interested in aesthetics and the development of music and music education.
