Customer Reviews:
Great help!.......2007-07-21
We just returned from a great trip to the Yucatan, and this guide is worth more than you can imagine. Despite being a little concerned at a couple of the suggested restaurants(they don't speak English, and they are obviously for a local audience), we never got sick, the food was delicious, and a great bargain. We are planning on purchasing Rough Guides for all of our trips, to make the most of the maps, trip, and restaurant suggestions. However, this guide was published in 2005, and the prices are a little higher now, and one restaurant was not there. Not too bad since Playa del Carmen is rapidly changing. Buy this guide, have a great trip, and travel smart!
Excellent for the independent ttraveller.......2006-05-12
This book was excellent for our needs. We rented a car and drove around the Yucatan, not the Cancun strip but other less travelled areas. One good thing is that the book was recently updated, the area has changed so fast that you need a current guidebook to keep up with the rapid development. The maps were good inside the book and also the history and description was readable not boring like in some of the books. One oddity though was that the author ignored Akumal, where we spent six pleasant days at a modestly priced resort that wasn't even mentioned in the book. Don't know why the entire town was basically ignored when it is a signficant destination and other guidebooks cover it. However overall the book was quite useful to me. I also bought the Rough Guide road map which was also very helpful because the signage is often poor.
Don' tleav home with out it!.......2006-05-03
I agree with the previous reviewer. This book covers all the bases, plus has plenty of sidelights to out of the way places to keep your trip interesting. It was evident that the author has done her homework! She will lead you to some great places to eat! I also recomemend you Check out the thriller "A Tourist in the Yucatan" a great beach read set in the Yucatan!
Highly recommended-- a big help........2006-04-22
I don't usually bother to do this, but I just wanted to post here that this guidebook is great: full of interesting ideas, and very trustworthy. All the basics are covered, but it also includes funny and reliable tips on cool places the average tourist might not go to, like Punta Allen and Felipe Carrillo Puerto. I really liked the fact that when the book covers the crucial tourist areas, it also includes a range options for making your experience even more enjoyable and varied, like mentioning spots that the locals actually go to. You can tell that whoever wrote this book did a lot of exploring to find interesting places.
It's a Rough Guide, so the maps are pretty good and there's all the nitty-gritty travel info I would want. I thought the info on renting a car was helpful, as it included tips on local driving rules that actually took the fear and mystery out of driving there for me.
By the way: you can find *delicious* food when you use this book. Sometimes it seems like guidebooks just reproduce whatever random restaurants are included in other books, but that's not the case here. The restaurants were always really good, and there was a range of price choices. Even the street-vendor suggestions are worth checking out.

This is a fairly good book........2001-02-07
This book is about the changes in Jewish sociaty in Germany mainly between 1770 and 1840. Though the author claims to be equally analysing all of Western European Jewry, in fact he only focuses on German Jewry. The reason for this may be that he wasn't so happy with the outcome in Ausria and Hungary. Most of what happened after 1840 is mostly in the political realm, i.e. when exactly Jews had legal rights to serve in Parliment and not have swear the standard Anglican oath etc. The main problem the book has is the author is one-sided in that he favors the Jewish reformers to the extent of not even mentioning Rabbi S.R. Hirsh. Rabbi Hirsh was able to construct a system that showed that there is no contridiction between the Jewish religion and the Modern era. A side effect of the problem is that the author gives very little statistical records to back up his ideas. If one wants to try and figure out what the total picture of German Jewry was in this period, one will be either misled or just confused. However all in all the book is clearly written and carefully footnoted.

Book Description
Conceiving the City is an innovative study of the ways in which a generation of late-Victorian novelists, poets, painters, and theoreticians attempted to represent London in literature and art. Breaking away from the language and style of Dickens and the static panorama paintings of William Powell Frith, major figures such as Henry James and J. M. Whistler, and, crucially, less-celebrated authors such as Arthur Machen, Edwin Pugh, and George Egerton bent realism into exciting new shapes. In the naturalism of George Gissing and Arthur Morrison, the fragmentary impressions of Ford Madox Ford, and the brooding mystery of Alvin Langdon Coburn's photogravures, London emerged as a focus for dynamic, explicitly modern art. Although many of these insights would be dismissed or at least downplayed by subsequent generations, the ideas evolved during the period from 1870 to 1914 anticipate not only the work of high modernists such as Eliot and Woolf, but also that of later urban theorists such as Foucault and de Certeau, and the novels and travelogues of contemporary London writers Peter Ackroyd and Iain Sinclair. Nicholas Freeman recovers a sense of late-Victorian London as a subject for dynamic theoretical and aesthetic experiments, and shows, in stimulating analyses of Conan Doyle, H. G. Wells, Arthur Symons, and others how much of our understanding of urban space we owe to eminent (and not so eminent) Victorian figures. Written in a clear and accessible style, the book restores a much-needed historical perspective to our engagement with the metropolis.

Customer Reviews:
waste of paper.......2004-09-29
It doesn't even deserve one star. Not much here about paper engineering. The paper is cheesy, color reproduction is terrible, photographs uninteresting, with few exceptions. Almost all promotional material. I didn't even bother to read what little text there is. I have some wonderful books on paper engineering and will not insult them by including this in my library. It goes back tomorrow.
Save your money.
A Beautiful, Intriguing, Exciting Book.......2003-12-26
A great book on the topic if you're interested in
details of paper engineering. Thought I'd page through
my library's copy for a few minutes and return it, only
to decide I needed to come here and buy it.
Great for collectors of pop-ups as well. The only thing that keeps it from being an all-around winner is the text printed on blocks of dark background colors: visually stunning but unreadable, and the text is worth reading.

Track Pack: Animal Tracks in Full Life Size
ASIN: 0486244423 |
Book Description
For hunters, naturalists, scouts, nature lovers. How to recognize tracks of alligators, bobcats, centipedes, owls, skunks, toads, and many other animals. Diagrams of tracks, tips on identification. "...interesting and a good inexpensive introduction..." — The Naturalist (UK).
Customer Reviews:
Inexpensive addition to your animal track library.......2006-05-23
Now here is a bargain of an animal track book:
1. It has dichotomous keys for identifying tracks for mammals and birds. The species list goes into quite a bit of detail beyond "type" or genus.
2. The drawings of tracks and gaits are large and clear.
3. The book is relatively light, and small enough to fit in a small pack or large pocket (7.9" x 5.4" x 0.4"). Paperback.
4. It is inexpensive!
5. It includes notes on reptiles and amphibians.
All track identification books have pluses and minuses. The behavior behind why these tracks are the way they are is not here. Halfpenny's book is much better for this. However, this is a nice book to have in your animal track collection.

Book Description
Paul Cézanne remains one of the world's most beloved Impressionist painters. His works are among the most popular at major museums around the world, and visitors flock each year to Aix-en-Provence, where the garden at his home and studio in Les Lauves remains meticulously maintained to honor his memory.
Now in Cézanne's Garden, award-winning garden writer and photographer Derek Fell offers a groundbreaking approach to the study of the man and his art. Setting images of Cézanne's paintings against breathtaking photographs of his garden as it exists today, Fell offers fresh insight into the man, his art, and the natural world that inspired him. Readers will see how Cézanne's unusual garden -- a wooded landscape layered with brilliant greens and punctuated by strong structural elements -- reflects the artist's innovative theories on color, texture, structure, and light.
Using Cézanne's own letters and the musings of painters who knew him, Fell draws an astonishing portrait of this socially awkward, hardworking man, complete with his favorite outdoor motifs, his favorite still-life subjects, and even his favorite flower: scabiosa. As he traces the development of the artist's career, Fell takes readers on a tour of gardens from Cézanne's early life -- the Jas de Bouffan on his family's estate and the nearby Château Noir -- as well as from his adult years, namely his garden and studio at Les Lauves, showing how it was then and how it stands now. For the practicing gardener, Fell also shows how to create a Cézanne-like garden of one's own, including how to create favorite Cézanne motifs such as vertical gardens and leaf tunnels.
Beautifully illustrated with more than one hundred original photographs and a dozen Cézanne masterpieces, Cézanne's Garden is a revealing look -- using art, photography, and reflection -- at one of the world's most cherished artists.

Book Description
This absorbing book is ballet's 'biography' -- a revealing examination of a closed world, its competition and camaraderie, sexual politics, intimacies, pressures and, not least of all, its magic. Ballet companies have endeavoured to hide what is going on backstage lest the reality of highly strung nerves, constant fatigue and pain from injuries tarnish the illusion of ethereal figures and seemingly weightless steps in polished performances. But the audience's perceptions of fairy-tale worlds onstage are far removed from the experiences of the dancers themselves. The author, who trained to be a dancer, has been given an entrée to this private world that few outsiders ever see.
Books on ballet tend to focus on performance. In contrast, this book, which draws on extensive fieldwork with major companies such as London's Royal Ballet, the American Ballet Theatre in New York, the Royal Swedish Ballet and the Ballett Frankfurt, is about dancers - how their careers are made and unmade and what happens in dance companies offstage. Anyone interested in the culture of ballet or the theatre, as well as students of anthropology, dance, performance and cultural studies, will want to read what really goes on when the curtain comes down.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing writing.......2000-10-13
This was one of the worst books on dance I have ever read! Maybe it was just a bad translation but the language was clumsy and most of all, the subject matter was just not compelling or informative. Ms. Wulff seemed to focus on details of little interest and the constant references/footnotes make the reading anything but smooth. Unless someone is completely unfamiliar with the dance world, I would not recommend this book at all.
