Customer Reviews:
Good book, but has a lot of recycled material........2006-11-18
This is a good, somewhat comprehensive book with nice pictures. However, don't buy it if you already have Koi: Living Jewels of the Orient. A lot of the text is the same, word for word, as are a lot of the pictures.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2006-01-10
That the study of plant viruses is of very important does not even need to be said, given the destruction that they cause to food plants every year. This sizable book, having appreciable gravitational pull, is written for experts and students who intend to specialize in plant virology. However, anyone who is curious about the subject will find the book packed full of information, even though at times it reads more like a literature survey. In addition, many of the techniques in genetic engineering were first applied to food crops and other plants. Therefore anyone who is interested in transgenic technologies or functional genomics will find the book very informative. This reviewer was mostly interested in the effects of plant viruses on photosynthesis and the role of gene silencing, if any, in plant viruses. These topics are discussed at various places in the book.
Some of the questions that arise when reading the book include the following (not all of which are answered in the book):
1. To what extent are humans responsible for spreading viruses to plants by moving them from one place to another?
2. How is viral infection dependent on the manner of crop rotation? On the sowing time of seed?
3. How does the ecology and epidemiology of viruses with nematode vectors differ from that of viruses with air-borne vectors?
4. What role do weeds play in the incidence of virus diseases?
5. Why does viral transmission by grafting result in a different disease than from transmission by mechanical inoculation?
6. How do nepoviruses and cryptic viruses infect the gametes?
7. How many viral particles are actually needed for a successful infection?
8. Are there plant viruses that specifically target the chloroplasts?
9. How do plant viruses affect the photosynthetic processes?
10. How does the susceptibility to infection depend on light intensity?
11. How are viruses transmitted to plants by beetles?
12. What role does gene silencing play in cross-protection?
13. How are viruses used to induce sequence-specific suppression of gene expression?
14. How does post-transcriptional gene silencing (PTGS) affect virus infection? How is PTGS related to transgenic resistance?
15. What factors are responsible for the differences in symptoms caused by different strains of a plant virus?
16. Do plant viruses inhibit programmed cell death?
17. Is there any evidence for the existence of `viral genes' whose role is only in the induction of disease?
18. What are the nature of the mosaic patterns and symptoms?
19. How does viral infection affect ethylene production?
20. What are the mechanisms by which virus infection stunts growth?
21. Do plant viruses suppress the expression of genes that compete with it and enhance the expression of those that help it?
22. How do viruses move from the external phloem to the internal phloem?
23. What are the effects of viruses on plant metabolism and can the metabolism be engineered by the use of viruses?
24. What is the nature of asymmetric infection?
25. What is the connection between the triple gene block and viral movement from cell to cell?
26. What experimental methods are used to study virus movement?
27. What is the nature of subliminal infection?
28. What are the three types of viral replication?
29. In terms of field release of transgenic plants, what risks are there in the recombination between episomal and transgenic viral sequences?
30. What are the mechanisms for RNA recombination?
31 What is the difference between mutation frequency and mutation rate?
32. What proteins are involved in the replication of viral RNA?
33. How many different species of plant viruses are there?
34. What is the oldest recorded virus?
35. What species of plants have never been susceptible to viral infection?
36. Does viral infection always cause disease in the infected plant?
37. Can two viruses, each of which is deleterious to the plant, be combined to form a virus that is not?
38. Can viral infection ever induce growth in the infected plant?
39. For plants having nectar guides and infected by a virus, does this infection have an effect on the behavior of the honeybees that access the plant?
40. Why does on species of virus infect one plant species but not another?
41. How can a virus be blocked from infecting the plant?
42. How long can a virus remain in pollen or seed before it loses its power to infect?
43. Can two different viruses infecting the same plant result in an easier infection for both than each one acting alone?
44. Why do plant viruses have the shapes that they do?
45. How many genes do plant viruses have?
46. Why are cell recognition proteins not necessary for plant viruses?
47. What strategies do viruses use to overcome eukaryotic translation constraints?
48. What is ribosome shunting?
49. What is cap-snatching?
50. Where does the virus get its energy to carry out its functions?
51. What advantages are there for viruses to replicate in their insect vectors?
52. What mechanisms do plant viruses use for RNA recombination?

Ballet & Modern Dance: A Concise History
ASIN: 0415111625 |
Book Description
Dancing Women: Female Bodies Onstage is a spectacular and timely contribution to dance history, recasting canonical dance since the early nineteenth century in terms of a feminist perspective. Setting the creation of specific dances in socio-political and cultural contexts, Sally Banes shows that choreographers have created representations of women that are shaped by - and that in part shape - society's continuing debates about sexuality and female identity.
Broad in its scope and compelling in its argument Dancing Women:
* provides a series of re-readings of the canon, from Romantic and Russian Imperial ballet to contemporary ballet and modern dance
* investigates the gaps between plot and performance that create sexual and gendered meanings
* examines how women's agency is created in dance through aspects of choreographic structure and style
* suggests approaches to issues of gender in postmodern dance
Using an interpretive strategy different from that of other feministdance historians, who have stressed either victimization or celebration of women, Banes finds a much more complex range of cultural representations of gender identities.
Customer Reviews:
Women Breaking Barriers.......2000-10-22
Dancing Women: Female Bodies on Stage is an exceptional creation that explores women in dance. Banes gives in-depth historical and social reference for the dances in this book. This context allows the reader to more fully understand the characters on stage and the women off stage. She shows us the significance of the ever-changing "marriage plot" and how it affected choreography and influenced women to break through the social barriers in their lives. It is very educational and inspiring to read about women changing the course of art in Europe and America during the 19th and 20th centuries. I recommend Dancing Women: Female Bodies on Stage to anyone interested in dance history and the woman's rising power in the arts.

Book Description
How do women set up institutions? How has higher education helped or hindered women in the world of dance? These are some of the questions addressed through interviews and researched by the educators and dancers Sharon E. Friedler and Susan B. Glazer in Dancing Female.
In dealing with some of the tensions, joys, frustrations, and fears women experience at various points of their creative lives, the contributors strike a balance between a theoretical sense of feminism and its practice in reality. This book presents answers to basic questions about women, power, and action.
Why do women choreographers choose to create the dances they do in the manner they do? How do women in dance work independently and organizationally?

Book Description
Working from the premise that dance history can be studied as it has been created in and through the bodies of dancers, Karen Eliot closely examines the lives and careers of five popular female dancers: Giovanna Baccelli, Adèle Dumilâtre, Tamara Karsavina, Moira Shearer, and Catherine Kerr. Notable dancers in European and Russian ballet and American modern dance genres, these women represent a historical cross section of performance, training, and technique.
By elegantly guiding the reader through the Russian Revolution, stage fright and illness, liaisons with aristocracy, movie stardom, and dancing rivalries,
Dancing Lives provides valuable insight into the culture in which each woman performed. Readers are introduced to each dancer’s social and economic status, her education and training, and changing debates about dance and choreography. The resulting stories are packed with intimate personal details, keen descriptions of dance pedagogy and performance, and behind-the-curtain glimpses of popular dance trends.

Indespensable.......2006-02-19
Quite frankly I think every student of Yoruba culture should own this book. While Gelede is the central object of study, the books touches on multiple aspects Yoruba and Orisa spirituality. The amount of information is so overwhelming that you will literally have to read it over and over again.
A very good book.......2000-12-06
I do recommend this nice book to all those engaged in the practice of the Yoruba cult. The author gives a good persp- ective of what is behind the cerimony. Mo juba Iyami Osoronga!
Worth reading for student & practitioners of Yoruba religion.......1998-06-22
This is a fairly good book on the subject of Yoruba masks and drumming. Contains good pictures of masks (Gelede) and is very informative with regards to ceremonies performed at the Gelede.
Is recommended reading for any of the followers of the Yoruba religion and to students as well.
I would have liked to have seen a more in depth review of the ceremonies and religious aspects of the Gelede, therefore I have not rated it a 5 Star.
Nonetheless, I would still read it all over again !

Book Description
Acclaimed author of Daddy Was a Numbers Runner and the historical novel Fragments of the Ark, Louise Meriwether now gives us this resonant and revealing contemporary story about the struggle to love in the shadow of our fears. . .
A successful writer for BlackSpeak magazine, Glenda Jackson is gifted, dynamic, and respected in her field. She's determined to take control of her emotional life. While reviewing a new play at Harlem's innovative Aldridge Ensemble, she meets the enigmatic director, Mark Abbitt, the driving force behind a renaissance in black theater.
The charismatic director proves to be as complex as one of his dramas. Haunted by memories of Vietnam, blind to the manipulations of his ex-wife, Mark is determined to be a good father to his four-year-old son. If Glenda's not to be eclipsed by Mark's powerful presence, she must confront her own deep fear of intimacy to find out if love is enough to heal a damaged soul. Yet against all the odds, these two remarkable people step into each other's shadow . . .and begin to dance.
Customer Reviews:
Not worth your time.......2003-07-10
I picked up this book because according to the display in my local library, it's a great new African-American women's novel. I actually forced myself to finish it because I wanted to make sure I wasn't judging it unfairly. Basically, I wouldn't suggest anyone waste his/her time on this book--it was not particularly well-written (the dialogue was stilted, the narration constantly said explicitly what could have been implied or shown to the reader in a more interesting way); the plot was incredibly contrived (drama after drama happens--to reveal here that there's a car crash, a near-mugging, a death in a gunshot robbery, a meningitis scare, and lots of post-traumatic stress syndrome doesn't spoil any of the pleasure of the book), and the characters were never three-dimensional enough for me to care about them.
great.......2001-11-23
Shadow dancing is the up and down marriage of Glenda and Mark. The marriage has problems that include, Glend's insecurities, Mark's ex wife, and the lost of his beloved job. What happened to Mark at the end was a shock and unexpected. I throught this book was good, in that in didn't end with the fairytale ending that most romance books do.

Wonderful Book.......2001-05-08
I thoroughly enjoyed Shadow Dancing. The characters were realistic, dealing with mature problems of love and guilt and vulnerability. From the very beginning I was drawn into the story, feeling connected to Glenda, the main character, and remained enthralled throughout. The writing is also exceptional. A very good read.
So-So.......2001-04-06
This book was like a soup that was under seasoned- bland. Don't get me wrong, the writer is very talented, that's clear by her lyrical, concise prose. But overall, Shadow Dancing is filled with mundane people having mundane experiences. The most interesting person is Darlene, but unfortunately, she's just a secondary character who's given a sketchy life. Come to think of it, where were all of the strong, lasting subplots? It seems the writer killed of a major character when there wasn't anything else to do. This book lacked depth and substanstiality, but on a positive note, it wasn't torture.
