5 out of 5 stars A well written and enjoyable look at Marine Biologists.......2001-02-19

This book, although technically a children's book, is fascinating reading for people of all ages. Mr. Collard does a great job at keeping things simple, yet at the same time detailing how these scientists go about their job on Lizard Island.

I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Like all Lonely Planet guides, a mine of useful information, that proves invaluable in picking the resort that best suits your interests and pocket. A good section on diving and snorkelling. Well worth the money.

                    4 out of 5 stars LP Maldives.......2004-11-02

I find this guide very useful in terms of choosing the resorts. It has good descriptions of all the resorts in terms of facilities, clients, food served and activities. The resorts are in different chapters according to the different atolls. So, it is a good guide for choosing the right resort according to one's taste

4 out of 5 stars A good place to start..........2002-08-26

There are four main tour books for the Maldives, and this one is a good place to start. (Another good one is the Michelin guide.) This book gives a general overview of the islands and many of the resorts. Divers will want the Divers' Guide to the Maldives to fill out the information here.

It was a good book about an overview of Maldives but did not focus much on the interior travel within Maldives and getting around its myriad of islands

                    Book Description

Scattered like rings across the Indian Ocean, the 26 atolls that comprise the Maldives are a diver's mecca. Encompassing channels, pinnacles and walls, the sites here have lyrical names that match their beauty. While hard corals recover from recent coral bleaching, the reefs still thrive with vibrant soft corals, sponges and anemones. Prolific fish life ranges from funny little blennies to massive, friendly Napoleonfish. Divers are transported to the reefs on colorful traditional dhonis and luxurious safari dive boats. This book describes 78 of the best sites in the Maldives, with full-color photos taken in the wake of El Niño damage.

                    4 out of 5 stars Maldives-A diving Mecca.......2004-10-29

If you are planning a SCUBA diving trip to the Maldives I would recommend this book for some useful information and eye candy in preparing an amazing underwater experience. I also recommend it because the photographs have been taken since the El Nino damage to the reefs so they portray a realistic view of what you will encounter. While the reef damage is unfortunate and visible, the Maldives are still an amazing for the variety of life that you can experience; whale sharks, mantas, hammerheads, napoleon fish, etc... can all be found in various location in the Maldives. Once, in the Maldives though, I would rely on the advice of the locals and the local dive shops. These people know which sites are best under the current conditions and where the sorts of things you would like to experience are to be found at that moment. So the book is not really a necessity, more something to wet your appetite for the trip. My experience included diving with a whale shark, being surrounded by giant mantas that swam in circles around me, seeing many sharks, and a very friendly sea turtle that seemed to think my camera might be an edible treat!

                            Book Description

Leon Bakst (1866-1924) was a painter, illustrator, stage designer and costume designer. He is universally acknowledged for representing a synthesis of creative energy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Bakst travelled widely throughout Europe and in 1890 joined the World of Art journal circle which numbered many artists among its members, the most famous being Benois and Diaghliev. This book illustrates the wealth of Bakst's contribution to the world of the theatre and dance. His best known work includes sets for Stravinsky's Firebird, and Weber's Spectre de la Rose.

To my mind, this book is designed and published in the most amateur way. The page layouts seem not to be carefully thought through. Some pictures are laid one upon another in the most unfavourable way, others are cut and/or placed too close to the binding in the center. What is the most annoying, several pics are "broken" - placed in such a way that the most part of the picture is on one page and 1/6 of it is on the opposite one (whereas the binding is quite tight), though could be zoomed in to see it as a whole.
Some pictures are magnified to such extend that lose their sharpness and really look like the pictures I sometimes print out using my DeskJet printer (even the photographs of ballet scenes are grainy!)
At least one picture is mistakenly described as the costume design for Salome, though is is clearly written on the drawing itself by the hand of Bakst: "Swan Lake" (in Russian). This leaves me wondering whether the author made a thorough investigation.

What I cannot understand is that if the book is about Bakst and his art, why there are so many reproductions of other painters' works (Serov, Bilibin, Shishkin, Chagall, Matisse, Gauguin, etc.)? No doubt, it is important to mention in the narrative all the influences on Bakst's art as well as the historical preconditions of his development as an artist, but why to include all these works, especially in such a large format?! For example, it is just briefly mentioned that Bakst was invited to teach at Zvantseva's school of art where Marc Chagall later studied, and there is a huge ("broken") Chagall's painting on the opposite page! I cannot get rid of the impression that the author didn't know how to fill in the pages.

On the brighter side, there are a lot of beautiful Bakst's works and despite of all its faults, I do not really regret bying the book, especially as there aren't (unfortunately) many books on this artist.

Leon Bakst was born in Belorusse in 1866 to a middle-class Jewish family. He showed early talent for art and was educated along those lines. His first work was as a copyist and illustrator for teaching materials and then for popular magazines. When he met Albert Benois, his talent found a new direction. Bakst joined Benoir's "World of Art" circle and later joined that group as part of the "Ballets Russes" with Diaghilev as the impresario (you can argue lots of different ways who was the "founder" of the group).

In the theater, Bakst found the perfect outlet for his talent. His designs are sensual, full of energy, and have a deep affinity for the orientalism that was all the rage in the early Twentieth Century. He was able to capture fantasy and exoticism (and some eroticism) in his designs.

As a person, he was given to strong passions and even obsessions. In the end, he broke down and his final illness seems to be a combination of a mental breakdown and some sort of physical illness that remains undiagnosed. He died in his 58th year. Some say it was the strain of working so hard on Istar with Ida Rubenstien. All we know for certain is the grief and sadness of his friends when they lost this talented artist.

This book is wonderful. It is full of great illustrations of Bakst's work. There are also many photographs of the dancers in the costumes (black and white - but the illustrations of those costumes are in color). The richness of the reproductions is quite impressive. There are also photos of the sets in the theater and of those involved with the Ballets Russe.

That this book has risen so much in value since it has gone out of print testifies to its quality and value.

I used to hunt a long time ago, but have since grown distant from any need to kill for sport ... so, I was initially rather hesitant about this purchase ... I've had the book for about a week now, gone through it from cover to cover, and must say the hunting element still disturbs me somewhat ... but the subject has been treated in the best possible manner ...

The book is well laid out, with quality paper and colour separation ... the photography is very good, the backdrops & landscapes breath taking ... the dogs themselves are shown at their best ... sharing quiet moments with their human partners ... running, playing and working in water ... and doing that which they excel ... retrieving. A wonderful book for all who love Labradors ... and can keep an open mind about hunting ...

There are alot of labrador picture books, but this is one of the best I've seen. Not only is the photography technically suburb, but the unique ways in which these dogs are portrayed shows you how much Byran loves labs and how much time he spends around them. Mr. Bryan postulates in the intro that people who don't hunt can't really appreciate their lab's full potential. I don't hunt, so our lab is a family dog. But this book allowed me to understand what she's capable of and to appreciate her already fine qualities even more.

Patty C. Rice brings a passionate love for her subject to this wonderful book. She offers a very comprehensive study of this beloved gemstone, from a detailed account of its long history, to the folklore surrounding it, to a thorough study of its scientific properties. She explores the many sources of amber worldwide, and gives an exhaustive study of the amazing variety of amber. Most helpful to a collector, she explains in detail how genuine amber differs from its imitations, and how you can perform simple tests to determine if yours is authentic. The mechanics of working with amber as a lapidary or jewelry- maker are also discussed. I loved the wealth of gorgeous photos, many of them from Dr. Rice's own impressive personal collection from all over the world. Her book does full justice to the beauty and enduring fascination of amber, and if you love it as much as I do, her book is a must-have.

2 out of 5 stars Not Quite Worth The Price.......2000-12-27

Apparently, this book was written to cater to those interested in hallucinogenic fungi. I initially bought this book in the hopes that it would teach me how to set up a cultivation operation focused primarily on edible, gourmet mushrooms. What I got instead was a poorly organized book rife with errors. The text has almost nothing to say about growing edible mushrooms. Rather, it is basically little more than a souped-up underground manual for the cultivation of hallucinogenic or so-called 'magic' mushrooms.

To demonstrate how erroneous this book is, the author begins the book by saying that fungi are plants! As any good student of biology knows, fungi lack chlorophyll, thus can not be considered plants, and occupy their own, separate kingdom. These and other gross errors throughout the text make it unfit as a starting point for those interested in mushroom cultivation.

The book is poorly organized, and places way too much emphasis on the psilocybe mushrooms, with passing reference to the cultivation of Pleurotus (oyster) mushrooms. In addition to some gratuitous color photos of a variety of Psilocybe mushrooms, and a few poorly placed black and white photos, this unremarkable book comes without an index, references, or supplementary materials. Furthermore, for the money you spend, you will not get much more than eighty six pages devoted to terse methods for locating, identifying, and cultivating the Psilocybe mushrooms (and this even is at a very low level).

The title of this book should actually be: 'Growing Hallucinogenic Mushrooms'. For those interested in Psilocybe mushrooms, this book may serve as an adequate reference. For individuals interested in the edible and gourmet mushrooms, a good starting point is Paul Stamets' utilitarian book 'The Mushroom Cultivator' and his comprehensive, though sometimes off-beat 'Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms'.

This is a great book, and at no. 137,000 this Bob Harris' book on Mushrooms seems all set to pass the other Bob Harris' book on Chomskian analysis of how dumb all those journalists are, excepting of course Mssrs. Cohen and Solomon.

4 out of 5 stars Growing Wild Mushrooms.......2000-03-30

Growing Wild Mushrooms is a good book for a biggining Mycologist. It runs through the basic procedures from making an agar medium to harvesting. But what makes this book worth a four star rating is it's wonderful color photos. It's one thing to read text, but quite another to to see clear illustrations. I would recocgmend this book to any aspiring Mycologist

4 out of 5 stars A little inaccessible, but very helpful.......2000-09-25

I bought this book looking for some help in making basic Classical and Romantic tutus. The book is dominated by illustrations, and the instructions could have been written a little more clearly -- but after re-reading them very carefully, I decided that all the information I wanted was actually there. It's just a little inaccessible.

The book describes how to make basic garments (tutus, leotards, etc.) without a pattern, and then has lots of illustrations to show how you might modify them for particular styles and dances. So, to get any use out of this book, you'll need to buy some cheap material, and draft your own patterns with the help of the book and perhaps a little trial and error. If you absolutely have to be provided with a proper pattern, you'll need to look elsewhere for it. Even so, the example illustrations may be helpful in adapting a basic costume to suit a particular dance, once you've obtained the basic pattern elsewhere.

The content of the book is just as old as I am -- first published in 1975 -- which is probably why Lycra (tm) isn't mentioned in the book at all! So if you're determined to use Lycra, you'll have to figure out for yourself what differences it will make to the design and construction.

Overall, this is a very good book which could really use a new revision to take account of new materials, and to make the text a little more accessible.

I went to the library to get this book out when I needed to make costumes for my daughters dance recital. It was an amatuer production of Swan Lake; so I needed some help making the classical tutus. Unfortunately, the book hrdly helped at all. The pictures and/or instructions were very hard to understand, and Iam no oaf so I do understand a lot. But this? I didn't understand at all. They did have some very nice ideas for costumes, I thought.
