The Rough Guide to Rome is the easiest to read guide I've ever owned. The writing far exceeds the usual highlights featured in other books.

This Book is a Little Gem!.......2005-12-29

If you want the real lowdown, and the fine detail on travel to Rome, this is the best guide book I've found. There are literally hundreds of recommendations for places to shop, see, eat and stay. I checked out the restaurants mentioned around The Spanish Steps, and completely agree with their picks. As someone who makes part of their living by writing about Rome, through my web site, I can tell you that this is a well researched, up to date book that will not disappoint.

I really don't care for Lonely Planet's Italy guide so I bought this one. Many of the descriptions are brief.

perfect if you're visiting for a weekend or a year.......2002-03-18

I bought this book while I was living in Rome, and in my six months there saw nearly all the sights listed and more. I especially loved the book's size--I could hide it in my pocket and not look so much like a tourist, and I didn't have to walk around with a big huge map unfolded in front of me. If only the maps in the book could be a little more detailed (like, including the names of the piazzas and churches mentioned in the text!). The bars and restaurants recommended are places I actually went and would recommend to other travelers.
I did find some errors in the text, but unless you're searching for specific works of art, etc. like I do, this shouldn't be a problem. Definitely my favorite of my 5+ Rome travel guides.. I like it even more than the one in Italian!

Only one thing lacking: a highlights section.......2001-06-18

This book delivers the right contents. There is no question about that. It has the quality of the other Rough Guides. It is practical, it is funny, it has a different view on things and it makes you want to go and see them.

The only thing I thought was lacking is some kind of overview or highlights section. Traditional full-blown Rough Guides usually have a 'Where to Go' section in the introduction. I could have appreciated a similar section in the beginning of this book as well, preferably taking into account that there are people who will stay for a week and others who will only stay for a few days. I don't suggest that people are being taken by the hand with complete itineraries as other guides do but some more suggestions would be useful.

Personally I believe that the maps could be better. I used them to see in which area I had to look (which for each site is nicely indicated in the book) but then switched to the map I got in the tourist office. I assume that this is one of the drawbacks of the otherwise excellent and handy format.

The listings in this book are Mobil rated which means not only could we find places which accept pets, but they are nice for us humans as well! Best of all, Andrea Arden offers some great advice on teaching your pet to enjoy travel. The resource guides (especially on places to visit with your pet) are an added bonus.

This book MUST be the definitive guide for any one interested the the art of Miniaturists. The presentation is excellent, content outstanding. There are more than 1,000 illustrations and the author has detailed the methods for dating minatures from clothing and style. Good bedtime reading.........2000-05-07

Ms. Osler wrote this book after her best seller 'A Breath From Elsewhere' so maybe my disappointment is owing to reading number two. I honestly can't see why everyone is so excited about this author. It's a nice book and pleasant to read before you go to sleep, but not particularly insightful (Jim Nollman, Allen Lacey), funny (Henry Mitchell), filled with useful information (Miss Elizabeth Lawrence) or historical tidbits (Anna Pavord). It's a good read, but doesn't deserve 5 stars.

The perfect gift for the avid gardener.......1999-12-15

Classic little book in this field.......2005-03-27

Although my botanical interests lie mainly in mycology and dendrology, I developed a little (or not so little, as the case may be, since there are approximately 14,000 species of grasses) subspecialty in graminology, or grass taxonomy. I was truly delighted to find this little book, because it is the best book I've found to get a conceptual understanding of the structure of grasses and the main genera to such an extent that it will aid your ability to identify them in the field using more traditional taxonomic keys. Normally, such keys lead you from the specific characters to the taxon/concept itself, but with this book, you learn the more powerful concepts that unify and differentiate the various genera. This was a great aid to me in my field identification of this important group, because after reading this book several times, I basically knew what was going on, instead of just "cookbooking" it using the typical botanical key, which is what the usual non-specialist in grass taxonomy does.

I have sort of an amusing story associated with this book. By learning the powerful generic concepts in the book I could basically identify any grass at least to the genus level by sight, and then I could consult a more detailed taxonomic key from there for the species. I was once sitting around a fire with my fellow mycologists, who were somewhat amused I had somehow learned how to identify the grasses, which, even for a botanist, are an esoteric group. So when they asked what I was doing, I said that once you understood the grasses, even an apparently desolate, boring, sand lot down the block can provide hours of fun. Mycologists are used to spending hours tramping through the woods in search of interesting mushrooms, so they found this quite funny and everybody laughed at the thought.

Anway, Agnes Chase loved the grasses and this book is filled with that enthusiasm in this clear and concise book, helping to make one of the most difficult areas of plant identification easier to deal with.

Grass Identification.......2001-11-13

While this listing doesn't say what edition the used copy is, it would be either 2nd or 3rd, I'm guessing. I own both. I would love to have a first edition. This primer of grasses is unique, in that it teaches the beginning botanist the basic structure of each tribe of grasses. Spikelet structure is broken down into easy to remember elements, vastly simplifying the student's understanding of an otherwise confusing plant family.

The fourth edition, AGNES CHASE'S First Book of Grasses, 1996 Smithsonian Institution Press, is a delight to have available, since earlier editions are out of print. This book is a "must have" for students of the grass family.

Great Nike Inside Story.......2006-01-16

I found this early 90's insider's view of Nike to be well writen, interesting and overly informative. Too bad it's out of print now! I bought 10 copies to pass around my work for managers and exec's to read.

I thought this was a very fascinating book to read. Whether or not you are a fan of Nike, this book gives insight into Nike's founder, Phil Knight, and the thought process that goes into making a great shoe.

I thought that this book was a good read because i have been a customer for Nike for many years now and so I got more information on how the company started and etc. But i did not like how Nike used poor labor to make their shoes and how they sell the shoes for more than they are made for. But anyways this was a good book to read on a powerful company.

Captures the Spirit of This Fast Corporation's Climb.......2004-04-02

After reading this fascinating account, I am somewhat dumbfounded by some reviewers who didn't find any real corporate insights here. There are plenty, especially the spirit of the place, which one quickly realizes is the heart and soul.

Bookcased by Air Jordan's entry and retire, Katz in good prose that flows well style relates how a middle-distance runner and his coach and eventually some Japanese shoes turned into the giant Swoosh Just Do It corporate wonder. For those of us from this time in our history, one distinctly remembers the embodiment of that spirit, Prefontaine.

You see the dominant style of the venture comes from the playing fields, and many customers for it shoes can feel it, and so they buy it. Others are caught up in its powerful draft, not understanding at all the athletic side. Knight does, and he and his company relished it and grew it. Amazing. I remember setting right next to a mother and her teenage son, both of us guys trying on cross-training shoes. Me, non-Nike, and this young kid insisted he would only wear Air Jordan. The salesman said they didn't have any in that style in his small foot size, the smallest size 2-3 sizes too big. The salesman said it would be harmful to his feet to wear them, but the kid was incensed to have them on. And mom gave in. Stunned, I was. Then to hear about what kids would do to have these shoes.

I relate to all of this as one who never really cared personally for those who stood for the Swoosh ala McEnroe, but respected very much their talent and drive. That's my response to their history and this fascinating chronicle of it: I don't really care personally for what they were about, but have great respect for their drive and talent. You have to give it to them.

They ran the great race, up those trudging hills, and through those barriers that all distance runners have to run through. That great cover photo says it well, does it not!
