Lonely Planet Pakistan & the Karakoram Highway.......2007-04-11
Lonely Planet Guide is the bible of all backpackers. Once again I would not travel without this addition for Pakistan.
Great book for a great country.......2005-12-24
Pakistan is among the tourism world's best kept secrets, and this book throws open those secrets very well. Lonely Planet has always been good with detail and comprehensive coverage, and that trend continues with its coverage on Pakistan.
Without the off-the-beaten track records, I would have missed some of the greatest historical and cultural artifacts that Pakistan has to offer. And the guide truly works as you trek up north into Pakistan's majestic mountains that offer the most mind-blowing natural beauty - even India's Kashmir area is nothing compared to the rugged and untouched beaty of the Swat River Valley all the way to whitewater rafting areas in Gilgit.
So when you head to Pakistan, definitely take this book along.
Wonderful details and descriptions.......2005-11-28
I found this book very helpful in getting to know this exotic country, full of adventure and culture.
I recommend this book highly to folks who want to know about the indus valley culture and Pakistan.

One of the most remote parts of the world, but well worth it.......2000-11-16
I recently completed a trip across the length of the Karakoram highway, and found this guide book excellent. It provided a lot of useful background on the different people and cultures whom we encountered, and had great information on the various towns and villages along the way. It was particularly helpful to have the phrasebook section at the back with all the different languages of the region. This is a wonderful part of the world to visit, but not the easiest to travel in, so a book like this makes all the difference.
Extremely Helpful.......1999-05-13
I reviewed several guidebooks on Pakistan before selecting this one. Lonely Planet is the best. It has the most detail information for travellers. Looking for a guesthouse, a motel, or a hotel in every corner of Pakistan, its in there. Travelling accross the country? Want to know how to make travel arrangement? Its all in there. Most importantly the prices are there. From the Arabian Coast to the borders of China, Iran and India this book is a traveller's survival kit; it all you need for you trip to Pakistan.
Born in Guyana and living in the USA, I decided to visit Pakistan in 1994. I was able to make my travel plans based on this guidebook. Its detail map was of great help. Where to stay, where to eat, what to buy, what to see and travel tips are all there. From this book I was able to get an accurate idea of how I should budget.
Using Lonely planet, I visited Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Taxila, Mardan, Peshawar, Saidu Sharif, Bahrain, Kalam (SWAT IS BEATIFUL), Muree, Abbotabad, Kaghan, Naran and Kashmir. My trip was a success thank to Lonely Planet. This guidebook is worth purchasing. Now that I am plannig to return to Pakistan I have purchased the 5th edition as I plan to visit Gilgit, Quetta, Chitral, Iran and India.
Karakoram Highway,The High Road to China.......1998-10-01

Book Description
Roots for Kids is based on a twelve-week course the author developed for her fourth grade class. While the book is suitable for adoption by teachers seeking to supplement their middle school social studies curriculum with material on family history, its principal use will be by and with individual young people. The author moves slowly and carefully, as she takes young readers through an introduction to genealogy, to discussions of their families and their parents families . . . learning how to ask questions (oral history) . . . researching local, state and national records . . . using libraries and historical societies . . . much more. In short, Roots for Kids will teach youngsters how to create a simple family tree and give them both the tools and appetite to learn more about their roots and to uncover the stories and events that make them and their families unique.

The BEST of the genealogy books.......1998-01-09
Purchased this book on the recommendation of a genealogist. She was right. It is NOT just for kids. The charts in the back have been an exceptional help in keeping me organized.
Book Description
The poetry selected for this volume comes from the Tang Dynasty (618-907), an era when the influence of Buddhism was at its strongest in China. The best loved and most influential of all Chinese poems come from this period. Like all books in the Shambhala Calligraphy series, In Love with the Way takes a classic spiritual text that has been a subject for calligraphers for many years—and uses it to showcase a uniquely modern example of the calligrapher's art, bringing the text to life in a striking new way. In Love with the Way is accompanied by François Cheng's introductory essay on poetry of the Tang period, and by a closing essay on the work of the calligrapher, Fabienne Verdier. Calligraphy (from the Greek for "beautiful writing") is an art where word and image meet, where the artist strives to give visual expression to the meaning of words in a way that transcends the text while remaining completely faithful to it. It is a discipline that has been invested with spiritual significance wherever it has arisen—and it has arisen throughout the world in every age, in virtually every language, culture, and religion. The Shambhala Calligraphy series is a collection of books devoted to contemporary expressions of this "art of the word," featuring contemporary calligraphers' striking new interpretations of texts that have been traditional subjects for calligraphic interpretation. Whether in Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Latin, or Chinese pictographs, the characters, words, and sentences are brought to life anew here in a choreography of mind, hand, and heart by which letter and spirit fuse in a single stroke.
Book Description
Nothing can replace home as the best and least-traumatic place to leave a dog when an owner goes away. And leaving a dog at home requires hiring a dog sitter to either stay at the house or come in periodically to care for them. This handbook is designed to offer owners peace of mind by informing the dog sitter about the peculiarities of a dog and its daily requirements, while also giving valuable information about general pet care. The easy-to-use handbook format lets the owner fill in appropriate information about their dog's food, walking schedule, toys, rules, favorite chair, medication, etc. The text of the book consists of an orientation on general dog behavior; tips on dealing with behavior problems; and what to do in case of an emergency. There is also a valuable section on how to give a dog medication, while also allowing the owner to write in specific directions, and a section on emergency medical care for dogs. This handbook minimizes a pet's stress when it is left in another's care, and gives owners peace-of-mind as their personal instructions and advise are clearly outlined and easy to follow.
Customer Reviews:
Comforting to owner, useless to pet sitter.......2005-06-27
This small book was written to comfort owners. Thinking about having a sitter come into your house to care for your pets is a stressful thought - what if they forget something? What if they break/steal something? What if they forget to come? But basically if your pet sitter isn't asking for all this information in this book on his/her own without the book then you are in grave trouble.
Professional sitters cost more than the "kid down the street" because they DON'T forget to come, they DON'T steal, and they DO know what questions to ask so that nothing is forgotten (and if there is an confusion, they know just who to contact to fix it with no delay). They also don't get bored around the 2nd or 3rd day and decide not to show up anymore (and lie about it).
Your sitter is not going to read this book if you leave it for them. Unless it is a professional, and then they will just read it to laugh at how usless it is. Do you really want your sitter spending his time reading instead of playing with your pets? If you want, buy this book so you know what the pet sitter will ask before they arrive (and to weed out any fly-by-night bad ones). Then hire a true professional. Plan to spend 60-90 minutes with the pet sitter answering his/her questions at the Meet and Greet. And if you are still not feeling near "worry-free", turn down that sitter and choose another.
good book to leave with your sitter.......2004-05-28
I think this book included a lot of information the sitter should know that I had not yet thought of. I think it is good for someone who is pet sitting the way they would baby sit, not as a pet sitting service, but sitting occasionally, which is how many people do sit. There are many books out there for "professional" pet sitters who have a pet sitting business, but nothing else for those who occasionally sit. I feel this book caters to those people where none others do. And it's a helpful little book for anyone to read who is watching your pet. I would recommend it if you are having someone come to watch your pet, or for someone who is going to watch someone's pet and can offer it as a gift to the owner. Handy and helpful.
Note from a Pet Sitter.......2003-10-12
If your pet sitter isn't asking about your pets needs and behaviors before agreeing to care for your pet, you're in trouble. As a pet sitter, having a client hand me their Dog Sitter's Handbook would be useless. Not only do I not have the time to read it, but I would already have asked all of these questions of the owner directly. The only use I can see to this book is if you are hiring a "free" pet sitter such as a neighbor or friend. Even so, it would be a lot easier for them if you wrote everything concisely on a single sheet of paper. And don't forget emergency phone numbers and directions to your vets office.
A helpful and thoughtful book to leave for your Dog Sitter.......2003-03-05
My only complaint with this little book (and the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5) is that it is too small for the purpose. The information provided is excellent and would help a Dog Sitter tremendously, especially the fill-in-the-blank pages that really personalize this book. This great book deserves to be much larger in format instead of a super small 'gifty' size...but it's still no reason not to purchase this book and use it over and over again! I have dog-sat in the past and wished I had a little something to go on. This is just the ticket! I do recommend it highly...just don't expect a full size 'handbook' as the title indicates.
The Dog-Sitter's Handbook.......2003-02-08
I was extremely disappointed in this book. I am a professional pet sitter and I was looking for a handbook for a dog-sitter. Given its title, I believed I had found it. Not! This was a complete waste of my money. There is absolutely nothing useful in this book that even a beginning pet-sitter wouldn't already know.

First published in 1986, this classic is back in print by popular demand. It is the authoritative text on edible landscaping, featuring a step-by-step guide to designing a productive environment using vegetables, fruits, flowers, and herbs for a combination of ornamental and culinary purposes.

There are sections on attracting beneficial insects with companion plants and using planting to shelter your home from erosion, heat, wind, and cold.
Customer Reviews:
A Library Within This Book.......2006-06-15
One of my most-used books; I'm buying this copy for a wedding. Two negatives -- The cost is high, and even as I wish for more color photographs, I ponder how much the price would rise with them. Also, as a new gardener, I struggled with five-syllable foreign terms and phrases. But he compensates well. After "an inoculant called rhizobium that colonizes the roots of leguminous plants", he says, "Pull up some bean plants. If you can see small pinkish white nodules on the roots" then it's okay. (p. 125)
The range of material is wide yet thorough. Can I grow peaches where I live? He compares 10 varieties, with limitations and virtues. He suggests alternate reading for each subject, and offers a capsule review (e.g., "A good one to browse in the library; only serious tree crops enthusiasts need own it." p. 219). The appendix seems all-encompassing to me, with an expansive index, recommended magazines and supportive organizations, mail order suppliers, & real recipes like "Chayote Parmigiana", with text on everything you'd EVER want to know about growing chayote for the dish, including Effort. (p. 300, 301)
Rosalind Creasy broke ground (ha!) promoting edibles in the landscape, and Kourik credits her. Her book has not been updated, however; this book remains timely.
Best book I have ever read related to gardening!.......2005-09-11
I am an experienced gardener but I never fail to learn something new when I pick up this book. I have had my copy for over fifteen years but still find the information current. This book is a must for anyone who has every wanted to grow an edible garden. From cover crops to choosing apple tree varieties it's packed full of information. I only wish the author would write another similar book so I could buy it. I own most of the books written about edible landscaping and can say this is by far the best.

Book Description
