Description:
Precommercial thinning (PCT) is being practiced increasingly throughout the Acadian forest of eastern North America to meet silvicultural objectives; however, effects of this practice on wildlife, both immediately and several years post-treatment are not well understood. Forest dependent small mammals have ecological roles as prey for numerous avian and mammalian predators, dispersers of seeds, fruit, and spores, and contribute to nutrient cycling. Researchers in the northwestern USA have suggested that thinning of young, regenerating clearcuts may increase the abundance and diversity of some forest-dependent small mammals by increasing rates of forest development and enhancing the ecological representation of mid-successional stands across managed landscapes. We examined the effects of PCT within conifer-dominated forest stands 1-, 6-, 11-, and 16-years post-treatment, on abundances of mice, voles, and shrews, and on within-stand structure in the commercially managed, Acadian forests of northern Maine. We live-trapped small mammals on 24 herbicide-treated clearcuts treated with PCT and on 13 similar, unthinned stands during summers of 2000 and 2001. Thinning of mid-successional conifer stands resulted in increased abundances, (red-backed voles, Clethrionomys gapperi, P=0.008; masked shrews, Sorex cinereus, P
<0.001) or had no detectable effect on (deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus, P=0.544; short-tailed shrews, Blarina brevicauda, P=0.517) the 4 most common species of Muridae and Soricidae in northern Maine. In general, abundance of deer mice responded more positively to increasing development class and to the number of years since thinning than other species of small mammals. Several within-stand habitat characteristics associated with stand maturity, such as larger stem diameters and a partially open canopy, occurred in thinned stands. Thus, PCT may accelerate the development of habitat attributes typical of mid-successional conifer stands in intensively managed stands within the Acadian Forest. PCT may increase abundances of small mammal species associated with mid-seral forest conditions at the scale of the forest stand.

Description:
Small mammals such as mice and voles have potential as indicators of sustainable forest management. They have an important functional role in forests, they are economically important as prey for furbearer populations, and they respond to disturbance in a characteristic manner. In Ontario, Canada, several small mammal species have been suggested as bioindicators. However, strong year-to-year variation in population levels independent of forest disturbance means that very long time frames would be required to detect trends. Models of habitat supply have been suggested as a method of monitoring small mammals. We explore the feasibility of monitoring structural measurements and habitat supply for small mammal species using an area near White River, Ontario, Canada, as a case study. Small mammals were surveyed in the region for 3 years, and associations with mapped and stand level habitat attributes examined. Thirteen species were recorded, but only five species were recorded in sufficient numbers for habitat associations to be examined. The deer mouse and red-backed vole were recorded from all mature forest habitats, although both were more prevalent in mixedwood stands. Red-backed vole abundance was linearly related to stand age and the volume of downed logs. Deer mice were most abundant in recently clearcut stands, with abundance declining sharply in 5-15-year-old stands. They were also abundant in mature forest, where they were significantly associated with downed wood volume. Vegetation complexity was also significant for both species. Habitat supply maps for both species could be readily developed, and structural attributes modified by forest practices were important. However, strong year-to-year variation in the abundance of both species in mature forest prevented carrying capacities from being reliably assigned to habitat supply maps. Thus, while relative changes in the availability of high, medium and low quality habitat are identifiable, expected changes in minimum population size cannot be inferred. The effect of cumulative disturbances on the quality of available habitat is also unknown. Without this information, change in habitat supply cannot be used to assess the sustainability of forest management actions. We suggest that dynamic landscape meta-population (DLMP) models may provide one solution, and require further exploration as a sustainability assessment tool.

This book is more than just a price book. It uses a series of questions to help you nail down just what you are looking at. In the BASICS section you find the different types of inlays as Line inlay Marquetry, Parquetry, and Oyster-veneering. The book is small enough that I carry this with me.
Some of the highlights are:

Great Photos.......2000-10-13
Millers is a clear, concise book and very well organized. My experience in the past with antique books is that there are very few photos of the items they are describing. This format is great if you already know the basics about antiques but it makes in almost impossible for a beginner to identify and price items just from a description. Millers provides tons of colour photos, with brief descriptions of what items were used for, what makes them valuable, what things devalue them and an estimate value. This format makes for quick and easy identification of hundreds of pieces. This is the perfect beginner/intermediate antique resource guide.

Good book for rose historians or other rose gardeners.......2002-06-27
I love this book, but found it a little daunting when I first unwrapped it. It is not your standard "lots of beautiful pictures" book. There are a few pictures, but they are not particularly good. It is the writing and the information contained that make this book so valuable. I keep it on my bedside table now and browse through it regularly, to read the fascinating histories and yummy descriptions of roses.
One thing that makes this book so excellent is the beautiful writing and the fact that he includes text and information from older rose resources/material that would be difficult to find without going to an extensive library. It is informative and gives detailed histories of old garden roses with descriptions that truly give you a feel for the roses. There is a rich section on propagation and the cultivation of roses, as well, although I found this less interesting than the historical information. I am particularly interested in Moss roses and this book had excellent material relating to the development of this type of rose, as well as all the other categories such as Portlands, Gallicas, Albas, etc. If you are confused by the categories, you cannot find a better source for explaining how these classes are different and how they may have come into being. I highly recommend it for people who are interested in history and development of roses. I have not seen a better book in this category, and I have quite a number of rose books.
If you are fascinated with the history of the rose, you should get this book--I read this time and time again when considering additions to my garden or when I simply want to know more about the old garden roses I grow and get the characterists of the various classes of rose straight in my mind.
The Best Book About Roses, Period........2001-07-08
One of the previous reviews said that this book is "not for the gardener." Perhaps it is not for the general, whining newby who can't tell the difference between a hybrid tea and a gallica or the lazy reader who can't get past any book that isn't slopped about with gaudy, glossy photographs and illustrations. But it *is* for the TRUE gardener who appreciates substance over style and really wants to learn about all that roses have to offer. The information contained in this book is priceless, charming and soul-satisfying. If you want a basic rose book with those goofy illustrated directions for planting a rose or identifying black spot, then please drive to Wal-Mart and pick one up there. If, however, you have outgrown the Ortho series (or the equivalent) and want something a bit more...wonderful...then please look no farther than G.S. Thomas and his unsurpassed trilogy of rose books.
It's Not a Picture Book - But it is Very Good.......2000-10-19
If you are a rose-lover who lives from show to show, this book is not likely to please. Nor is it likely to be a good book first book for people new to roses. Firstly, it is not a picture book, though it does have some of the best rose photos to be found in books. Secondly it is not about the "hot" roses of today Hybrid Teas, Floribundas, and Miniatures.
Graham Stuart Thomas started out growing such roses, but in his early twenties he was visited by Constance Spry, an Old Rose lover who changed the way he looked at roses. Thomas has spent the rest of his life preserving, promoting, and documenting Old Roses, Shrub Roses, and Climbing Roses. His studies have honed his aesthetic sensibilities. And it is these keen sensibilities that inform this book. We can rely on Thomas to tell us not just the features and history of a rose, but to relate to us how he feels about it. It is this judgement that makes the book extremely valuable.
As we mentioned, the book has a section of one or two hundred photographs and watercolor paintings. These are classic photos, of whole plants. They teach us how the roses will look as garden plants. And as such they are more valuable than a ten thousand photos of single hybrid tea blossoms.
It is easy to recommend this book to anyone who wishes to learn how to choose good, gardenworthy roses that work as landscape plants. Any well-rounded rose grower really should have spent some hours perusing its pages.
Excellent Rose Reference Work.......2000-05-01
This book has turned into my best and most accurate reference on roses, especially historical roses. Graham S. Thomas has given fascinating and thorough information on the development of roses. I have also found his descriptions of many varieties of roses to be supurb and thorough. Gardeners who prefer a more lush and informal style of gardening will also appreciate his information on growing roses as he doesn't carry pruning to the extreme that so many gardening books advise. On the whole, if you are interested in the history of roses and growing Old Garden Roses, you must get this book.
Not for the gardener.......2000-04-04
This book is magnificent - as a reference work for a rosarian. Unfortunately, it fails to give the clues a gardener might wish for in terms of how a rose will adapt to climates, etc.

Martin Boyd (1893-1972) is a contender for recognition as Australia's greatest novelist. Dr Niall's is the only full-scale biography available so it is gratifying that this book is itself a remarkable achievement.
Boyd was an enigmatic figure. He wrote principally about life in Australian settings yet he spent most of his life living in England and on the Continent. No simple view of the writer emerges from his fiction, and the picture given in his correspondence differs significantly from what emerges from his personal diaries.
Niall had good access to the friends of Boyd who remained alive, to his larger family, the houses he lived in, and much of his writing. I suppose this biography could be said to be authorized although the researcher has not shied away from controversy.
It remains a general biographer and specialists will want more. Coming from a continuing family of visual artists of acclaim, Boyd was very serious about his "hobby" of painting and drawing, and more needs to be said on this. Who were the Bloomsbury people he met who so influenced him? Then it would be interesting to know about the book reviews Boyd published anonymously to fit a convention of the times. And Boyd has always had a public in the United States, but what did U.S. reviewers say about his writing? Niall acknowledges that since she finished writing on Boyd (to go on to another renowned biography) new and important data have come to light.
Niall's life of Boyd remains an authoritative general biography and seems set to become at least a minor classic of the genre.
