            Book Description

James Houston lived among Inuit in the Canadian Arctic between 1948 and 1962. He slept in their igloos, ate raw fish and seal meat, wore skin clothing, traveled by dog team, hunted walrus, learned how to build a snowhouse, and raised a family. While doing so, he helped change the Arctic. Impressed by the natural artistic skills of the people, he encouraged the development of exhibits and sales of Inuit art in the south - sales that have brought millions of dollars to its creators. Confessions of an Igloo Dweller, a wonderful piece of storytelling, recounts Houston's fascinating and often hilarious adventures among a confident, smiling people who spoke no English. Taking readers into the heart of Inuit culture, it joins the tradition established by Fridtjof Nansen, Vilhjalmur Stefansson, and Farley Mowat. A book full of adventure and anecdote as well as the delights of art and the hazards of cold, it is illustrated with forty drawings by the author.

            5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down.......1999-12-03

This book was a delight to read. Mr. Houston's admiration for the Inuit culture is evident on every page. Many of the passages and stories are thought provoking and educational. I especially enjoyed his descriptions of bewilderment turned to enlightenment by such unassuming teachers.

            4 out of 5 stars A really good book.......1999-09-09

Really enjoyable. This man's interraelationship with a disappearing culture and the hurdles he faced in the Arctic wilderness are tangible and detailed. Mostly this book is about a youth (his own) - lost but still remembered. I read Joseph Conrad's Youth at the same time and the themes were quite similar.

4 out of 5 stars "Yes, but is it Art?".......1997-08-15

First this is a book about art. If you have ever wondered how those most beautiful Eskimo sculptures and prints have found their way to your local gallery; this book tells you how.

Mr. Houston was the first artist to recognize and search out the Inuit artforms and to deliver them to the art markets "outside". In every detail, name by name, you can read about the Inuit art culture from the very first stone figures and bone scluptures, to the latest prints.

Second this is a book about Arctic. Adventure on a epic scale. Mr. Houstons' honeymoon was one of the very few trips from east to west across Baffin Island by sled. Mr and Mrs. Houston spent years in the Arctic living in the Inuit way; both their sons spoke Inuktitut in preference to English and preferred raw seal meat to... well that was all there was to eat.

Sadly there are in this book no prints of the Inuit art, nor photos of the artists, nor any example of the art described in the text. For all the journeys by sled, boat, plane, and on foot there are no suitable maps. For a book about a culture that is so completely linked to geography, there are no maps for the reader to follow nor plates for the art lover to love.

The most astonsihing event of the book occurs on page 9. A very young Mr. Houston steps off of a plane in the Hudson's Bay Arctic, looks around, and flatly refuses to live any place else; He stays for 15 years.

You can add Mr. Houston to the list with Barry Lopez, William Vollmann , Farley Mowat, and John McPhee; thoes writers that get the Arctic Expericence

            5 out of 5 stars Gripping, non-judgemental, true-life narrative........1997-06-12

This is one of the finest first-person, historical narratives I've read for many years. Mr. Houston provides a unique, non-judgemental series of observations and first-hand stories about the Inuit and his own experiences living among them and working with them and, most importantly, learning from them. He is very honest in relating his own foibles and potentially life-threatening mistakes. His style is very easy to read and personal and I could not put this book down after starting it. Mr. Houston lived a highly privileged and unique life among a pre-literate but very evolved group during a crucial turning point for their culture. This is a rare and wonderful narrative.

5 out of 5 stars A vivid view of Inuit life.......2001-08-23

"Arctic Memories," by Normee Ekoomiak, is a wonderful view of life among one of the indigenous peoples of Canada. The author, Normee Ekoomiak, is one of the Inuit people of northern Quebec. This book contains full-color reproductions of Ekoomiak's paintings and stitched fabric creations. Each piece of visual art is accompanied by an explanatory mini-essay by the artist.

Ekoomiak's vivid art depicts the Inuit people, the natural environment, and the animal life of the Arctic. We see a family in the iglu, polar bears, children playing various games, a family ice fishing, a flock of geese flying, and more. Although most of the artwork is in a fairly realistic mode, there are also some stunning stylized depictions of figures from Inuit folk traditions. One such marvelous piece, for example, depicts a tusked narwhal surrounded by mermaids. An important recurring motif is Okpik, the spirit owl "who sees everything."

The book is presented in a bilingual format: the text appears in both English and Inuktitut (the Inuit language). Inuktitut is written with a striking, almost mathematical-looking type of script which is similar to that used in the Cree language. This appearance of two very different scripts alongside Ekoomiak's fine artwork really enhances the visual appeal of the book. All in all, an excellent book for readers of all ages.

              5 out of 5 stars A fabulous book.......2002-12-01

For over thirty years, Canadian photojournalist Fred Bruemmer has lived with and photographed the Arctic peoples of North America, and in this book he draws on his numerous experiences to fashion poignant and moving memoir of his life in the North and the many people who he has met. This is a book that for someone like myself, who has a limited understanding of this region, will give them new understanding and deeper insight into its past and the lives of the peoples who have inhabited it for countless generations.

                            Book Description

Emerging from the world of commercial art and product styling, design has now become completely integrated into human life. Its marks are all around us, from the chairs we sit on to the Web sites on our computer screens.

One of the pioneers of design studies and still one of its most distinguished practitioners, Victor Margolin here offers a timely meditation on design and its study at the turn of the millennium and charts new directions for the future development of both fields. Divided into sections on the practice and study of design, the essays in The Politics of the Artificial cover such topics as design history, design research, design as a political tool, sustainable design, and the problems of design's relation to advanced technologies. Margolin also examines the work of key practitioners such as the matrix designer Ken Isaacs. Throughout the book Margolin demonstrates the underlying connections between the many ways of reflecting on and practicing design. He argues for the creation of an international, interdisciplinary field of design research and proposes a new ethical agenda for designers and researchers that encompasses the responsibility to users, the problems of sustainability, and the complicated questions of how to set boundaries for applying advanced technology to solve the problems of human life.

Opinionated and erudite, Victor Margolin's The Politics of the Artificial breaks fresh ground in its call for a new approach to design research and practice. Designers, engineers, architects, anthropologists, sociologists, and historians will all benefit from its insights.

                                Book Description

Kingdon's remarkable seven-volume masterwork on East African mammals concludes with two volumes on the bovids, placing them in a broad comparative, ecological, and evolutionary context. Volume IIIC covers cattle, water buffalo, kudus, elands, dwarf antelopes, duikers, reedbucks, and waterbucks; IIID covers gazelles, impalas, wildebeests, oryxes, sheep, and goats. In addition to the stunning, lifelike drawings that are an integral part of the text, the volumes include a reappraisal of bovid taxonomy and original analyses of the form and function of body shape and size, horn shape, coat pattern, and tooth structure.

                                5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2000-05-03

This is an excellent resource tool for anyone with a serious interest in African insectivores and or bats. The author provides detailed information, not found in most texts. The drawings are wonderful.

                                5 out of 5 stars A "Must-Have" For All Wildlife Artists!.......1999-11-02

As a professional Wildlife Artist, my field includes painting, sculpture, and taxidermy.

This makes all of the "East African Mammals" series of books by Jonathan Kingdon an absolute necessity. The text gives a wonderful insight into the natural history as well as the historical ancestry of the majority of East Africa's wild children.

But even more, it is Mr. Kingdon's exquisite pencil renderings of the individual species as well as the structure of their musculature, that make these books so special.

These musulature drawings, in turn, are further enhanced by deeper dissection-like illustrations revealing the deeper muscle structures responsible for much of the movement and support for the mammal in question.

This volume takes us through the largest of the antelope on the African continent - the Eland, both Giant and Common, the Sable antelope, and both Kudu, Greater and Lesser - as well as the vast selection of East Africas' smallest antelope species. The Duikers, and Klipspringer, among others, are handled in all their delicate detail. Besides photos of these little antelope, these illustrations are absolutely needed in order to produce accurate renderings. I cannot stress enough, the importance of the anatomy that is revealed within these pages.

The books in this series are therefore especially indispensable to the Wildlife Restorer (taxidermist) as a guide to anatomy that we rarely get to see "in-the-flesh" as it were.

I can, therefore, wholeheartedly recommend this series of books to anyone who cares enough about their chosen field of art, to pursue all ends to collect as much reference material as possible.

These books are an excellent addition to the wildlife artists' library.

These types of drawings are especially fascinating in the Large Mammals volume, wherein the trunk of the elephant and the mouth structure of the hippopotamus are visually dissected to provide a greater insight into these structures, and their performance in the animal.

5 out of 5 stars Agrippina Vaganova, Ni Zabila (not forgotten).......2002-12-24

Bravo to Professor Peggy Willis-Aarnio for her efforts in detailing the life and times of Agrippina Vaganova! In this extremely well-documented book, she has included historical and biographical information on A.Y. Vaganova that has previously not been available in or translated into English.
Especially satisfying was the information provided from L.Rozhdestvennskaya's (editing ?) of Vaganova's "Articles, Recollections, (and) Materials" published in 1958.
Books and journal articles are not always republished in Russia, so when you see a book on the shelf at "Dom Knigi" or at "Gostiny Dvor", you buy it no matter what.
And Vaganova's "Articles, Recollections, Materials" is a must-have if you can ever obtain a copy. Although it will probably trigger a "special" tax or customs payment to get it out of the Russia, since it may be considered an archival document, artifact, or antique.
To Professor Willis-Aarnio's credit, she has examined a tremendous amount of original source materials, and this is reflected in her work and scholarship.
For the average reader or student of ballet, she has included an overall history of classical dance, and just as importantly, the development and history of ballet performance in Russia.
For the balletomane, she has included lots of footnotes, a list of Vaganova's performances and roles, and a list of her pupils, a ballet timeline, a ballet lineage of teachers, and the original introduction to Vaganova's "Fundamentals of Classical Dance."
Also, there are several insightful essays on the teaching of ballet contributed by Caroline Breshears, an educator and protege of Professor Willis-Aarnio.
At 637 pages, the book serves as both a textbook and a reference book for the history of classical dance.
Still, one wishes for more translated information and anecdotes about Vaganova's early teaching experience, the birth and life of her son, the blockade of St. Petersburg in 1941 during the Great Patriotic War (WWII) and how she stayed behind to care for her mother, the travel to Perm, her work at the Bolshoi Theatre during this time, and the current location or existence of the "forgotten or misplaced" Pomerantsev archives.
But clearly, Professor Willis-Aarnio's efforts are a much needed and appreciated work in this area. One only hopes for further publications from this author and educator in the subject matter of classical dance forms and teaching methodology.
While it may be a bit premature to say that the center of classical dance pedagogy has shifted from Saint Petersburg, Russia to Lubbock, Texas, USA, this particular book has certainly started the momentum in that direction.
