Practical and Light.......2004-10-26

I bought the book for a recent trip which included stops in Paris and Amsterdam. Also included in the book are sections for London, Venice, Florence, Rome, and Madrid. If you're used to Rick's style and sense of humor from his TV show or his other guides, this book will fit you like a glove. The Paris section includes a city walk, the Louvre, Orsay, and Versailles, while Amsterdam's section includes a city walk, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, and Anne Frank House. Paris' city walk takes you from Notre Dame meandering through the Latin Quarter to Pont Neuf while Amsterdam's takes you from the railway station to the Rijksmuseum.

Let me start by pointing out that almost any city guide you buy will include some sort of walking tour. In my opinion, walking is the best way to see a city and to appreciate its size and layers. The walking tours for Paris and Amsterdam were well organized and informative, but I would have expected more than one to be included for each city, especially Paris with all its diverse "villages".

His hints for the museums were informative, but I found that they seemed to be focused on getting you in and out in the least amount of time. He provides two-hour tours for both the Louvre and Orsay in Paris. I thought they were good starting points (maybe read them before you go for the basics, which entrance to use, etc.) but I would suggest at least another couple of hours of exploring on your own in addition to what he describes for each. Don't forget the cafes inside when you need a break. I found Orsay's audioguide for 5 euros particularly useful. I found the book to be an excellent resource for Versailles allowing you to shimmy past the tour groups. The information in the book for each room was usually more than what we heard the live guides tell the tour groups. The map and guide of Versailles' gardens was also very useful. ONE VERY IMPORTANT NOTE THAT RICK FAILS TO MENTION is that beginning in 2003, Versailles began an all-encompassing, 17-year renovation plan. The beautiful Hall of Mirrors is currently being renovated in sections so you'll always likely be able to see some of it, but not the whole thing for the next many months. Versailles is worth seeing regardless, just don't be disappointed when you get there.

In Amsterdam, Rick's descriptions for Rijks and Van Gogh are great. The audioguides for each were worthwhile as well though certainly not necessary if you're armed with the book. This book is totally unnecessary for the Anne Frank House. Everything you need to know there, you watch on the slick plasma TVs or you read on the display cases and in your free guide. One exhibit there that Rick fails to mention is a temporary exhibit at the end called "Out of Line" which runs at least until May 1st, 2005. It's an interactive, voting-type thing where scenarios are shown on two monitors and you then decide whether freedom of speech or the right to be protected against discrimination should be held more important. It's a fitting end to a visit to Anne Frank House with topics as varied as Eminem's rap lyrics, soccer chants, and religious edicts covered. The room's votes are tabulated after each scenario and you can walk in and out as you please.

A lot of this book can be found in other Rick Steves guidebooks, but if you're going to visit more than one of the cities covered and you don't need all the fluff found in the more comprehensive books, this is probably the way to go.

This book is an excellent tribute to those who designed,built and sailed on the world's most famous ship. It is also a fine tribute to those who sacrificed so much to find the ship laying on the ocean floor,at a depth of 2 1/2 miles below the surface,375 miles SE of Newfoundland,and 1,000 miles due East of Boston; and bringing back to us, in unimaginable detail ,how this magnificient ship, in all her splendor, looks today in her final resting place.For many decades ,there was wild speculation of how the ship would look after so many years under such great pressures and even if she could ever be found. All that speculation has been resolved,thanks to the efforts of these determined and talented people.Not only have they found her,visited her,returned with fantastic photographs;but have also done a superb job of sharing it with us through Motion Pictures,Documentries, beautiful,haunting and imaginative drawings and keepsakes such as this dazzling book.

Going to an abyss can be a good thing.......2006-08-13

This book is a welcome additon to any on the RMS Titanic. Its not just history but of the crew of the deep sea submarine. The Titanic always captures ones imagination. This book shows the wear, and tear that nature is bringing the wreck of the Titanic. Its sad how much has changed since her discovery by Bob Ballard. The book goes into depth through pictures, and artwork of famed painter Ken Marschall. What is happening to the liner is awful. I also can respect a book that goes to the abyss without raping the Titanic that is a graveyard too, that deserves to be left alone to its fate by nature. Thank you for Amazon for allowing me to review this book, and give a little opinion on the subject of Titanic.

Haunting.......2006-08-06

"Ghosts of the Abyss" features a collection of the greatest Titanic Wreck images to date. Cameron has wandered into areas of the ship inquiring minds like my own have often wondered about. The contrast of the Titanic then to what she is now reveals the tragic aspects of this signifciant historical disaster. What was by far catching were several 3-D models present here and there such as the Grand Staircase among other locations within the ship. The angles of the images taken and lighting of the wreck were brilliant. If anything, the rare images of the D-Deck vestibules make the book worth the price. A must have for anyone who is captivated by the former elegance of the ship of dreams.

The Titanic in photographs then and now (with now in 3-D).......2003-09-10

Director James Cameron has remained obsessed by the wreck of the Titanic and managed to avoid working on his next real film by putting together the giant-screen 3-D film "Ghosts of the Abyss." Not that you can really blame Cameron for being wary after putting together the biggest money making film of all time (in non-adjusted dollars). But then what did David O. Selzink do after "Gone With the Wind"? ("Duel in the Sun," which was not bad, but what does not suffer in comparison to "GWTW"?). I fully expect the director's cut of "Titanic" to be coming out on DVD next, but in the interim there is "Ghosts of the Abyss" and this book, which provides more than 35 3-D images based on the film. Following Jake the Robot that Cameron sent deep inside Titanic you use your official "Robot Mask" so that you can see the ghosts.

The main perspective of the book is to provide a contrast between period photographs of the Titanic and recent underwater shots taken by Jake. The 3-D effects are okay; the head-on view of the Titanic's bow showing the prow and the rust-shrouded railings around the forecastle deck (page 23) is the only one that really got a reaction from me. The ones with the ghosts are also just okay. The actual photographs are pretty amazing as far as I am concerned, so adding ghosts or even doing them in 3-D are not exactly pluses as far as I am concerned. If this book just did the straight forward compare and contrast of the photographs then and now I would have been just as impressed. Younger readers, for whom a lot of these pictures will be new, are the ones who are going to like this book (and the 3-D pictures) the most.

3-D is a pass........2003-06-27

Just received my combo of Ghosts: Journey and Ghosts: 3-D. Very disappointed in 3-D. The vast mojority of pics are from old photos we have seen many times before with the attempt to "3-D" them. I bought the book for what the movie 3-D was and came away very disappointed with the content.

I know I may be a little over the suggested reading age, but I was blown away by the 3-D pictures contained in this book. Once I saw the movie , "Ghosts of the Abyss," I knew I had to get some of those images to keep! It is great to get a chance to see pictures I have looked at for years come to life. The wreck appears to be right in front of you. This book is great for all ages, even if you think it is a kids book, get it for the images. Ken Marschall is a wonderful artist and to see some of his painting in 3-D is phenomenal. I know if I was a nine year old this book would have surely fascinated me. If you are looking for a more information packed book, I suggest going for, "Ghosts of the Abyss A Journey to the Heart of the Titanic", which is a GREAT read.

A good book if used judiciously.......2005-07-20

I found The Perfect Puppy extremely useful in shopping for my last two mixed-breed dogs. I concede that no dog will conform to all characteristics attributed to the breed. But reading the profiles made me sensitive to different traits, and I used that sensitivity in shopping individual dogs.

Eeeek!.......2001-12-15

There were times when I wanted to throw this book on the floor and shout "No! No! No!" First, I think Hart & Hart were far too discouraging regarding adoptions of adult dogs, although since the book is aimed at puppy buyers, I can look past this. If only that were the book's only foible...

The authors suggest that bringing a female dog into a home where there is already a female dog is just as trouble-free as bringing a male dog into the same situation, which I just haven't found to be true. (In my experience, one dog of each sex is preferable in a multiple dog household.)

Many of the breed rankings seem really off. Australian Shepherds and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, for instance, significantly differ from the profiles Hart & Hart present. Chessies are far more dominant and territorial. Further, this book encourages people to conflate Chessies with Labs, which is not helpful, since there are pronounced differences in the temperaments of the two breeds.

This book is worse than worthless, it is misleading and can give people a false sense of security.

If you are looking for a puppy or dog, a much better bet is Brian Kilcommons' "Paws to Consider," or for a lighter, mongrel-centric touch, Kilcommons' "Mutts: America's Dogs," which contains short profiles of the more common mixes. I found both of Kilcommons' books to be right on target.

If you're looking for accurate breed profiles, keep looking.......2001-11-21

I don't know where the author got his information, but I surely don't think he's ever met an Australian Shepherd. If the other breed profiles are as mis-guided as this breed profile, Purebreed Rescue Groups are likely to see an influx of dogs purchased by those who thought they'd done their research. For the record: Aussie's *don't* read your mind without training, and a family with children had better have the time and commitment to devote to training this breed. In my experience, Aussie's are a highly excitable, high-drive breed with a profound instinct to herd. This herding drive requires focused training so that the dog will learn what is appropriate and what is not. Woe betide the intruder that thinks my male is a "benign" watchdog, or the poor soul who thinks my female, who is quite literally *never at rest*, is "relaxed". And if you think an Aussie won't challenge your dominance, think again: not only will some of them challenge your dominance, they'll challenge your intellect, patience and SAT scores (and probably top them too)! And a low rating on excessive barking? PUHLEEZE!

Don't get me wrong... Aussie's are the perfect breed for the *right* home, provided that home has made an informed choice and is fully committed to appropriately training and exercising their Aussie. If that home has used this breed profile they'll be expecting an "out of the box" mind-reading-mild-mannered-
playful-perfect companion, and they'll be unpleasantly surprised by the amount of training it will take to get that perfect companion, and quite unprepared for the level of exercise this breed requires.

While the intent of this book is admirable, it's execution falls far short of the mark. Readers would be better informed simply by consulting a responsible breeder for research, a local kennel club for references, or by contacting the purebreed rescue club... these rescue groups are more than happy to educate people about the characteristics of their breeds, and have a vested interest in preventing "uninformed" choices.

By all means, read this book for some light reading, but if you're looking for accurate and substantive information on which to base your selection of a new four-footed family member... keep looking.

Dangerous information.......2001-11-21

This book provides some very misleading information. Take the Australian Shepherd for example -- according to this author, the Aussie makes the perfect family pet because it is a "benign watchdog" that will not challenge its owner's dominance! How wrong! The Aussie, as a herding dog, is bred to handle tough situations, to turn a bull around, grip a 250 pound ram in the nose, etc. They like to "herd" children, tell them what to do, and if there is not a strong leader in the family, will happily take over that role! The evaluation of the Aussie could mislead people into believing they are buying a laid-back, easily trained pet, when in fact, they acquired a strong-willed herding dog, looking for a job to do, with an insatiable need for exercise, training, and strong leadership. Not given the right leadership, Aussies can easily become destructive. The breed standard describes them as "reserved around strangers" and poorly trained and socialized Aussies may become aggressive! This breed is absolutely wonderful -- for the right owners, willing to provide the right training, exercise and leadership. I would give this book five MINUS stars!

Clearly they didn't do their reseach - and followed others........2001-08-03

I spent 1 minute with this book and it was evident that they did NOT do research of their own, they merely took false studies and slapped them into a book. While I can only speak to the areas I know, I cannot say the entire book is worthless, but if one section is so clearly unresearched the value of the book as a whole, in my eyes - is null.

I own and work with Siberian Huskies and am apauled every time I see something claiming them to be aggressive this is NOT a breed trait by ANY stretch of the imagination.

With many researchers they marks "huskies" as being aggressive but fail to denote the difference between siberian huskies, alaskan huskies etc. It's a shame people will base their opinions on books like this and propogate bad information.

Any dog of any breed CAN be aggressive. But by standard, the siberian is most definitely not aggressive towards people and other dogs. If you want good information, turn to a GOOD breeder or a rescue organization near you. Breed specific rescues are throughout the country and are more than happy to help educate you on the shortcomings of their breed.
