Lives up to the Rough Guide reputation.......2006-05-05

The fourth edition of the Rough Guide to Los Angeles lives up to the outstanding reputation of the travel publishing company. One of the best features of the Rough Guide is its crystal-clear yet fine type, printed on durable and thin pages, so that a ton of information get packed into a compact format. This is all accompanied by a glossy front section providing an overview of the highlights of the City of Angels.

The Rough Guide sticks to a tried-and-true format, starting with the basics, then providing detailed coverage of ten sections of the city (including Orange County, which probably doesn't want to be considered a part of LA). Inland coverage extends only to Pasadena, so this is a better bet for coastal travel than it is for going into the eastern portions of the Los Angeles area. The last third of the book contains listing for accommodations, restaurants, bars, shopping, and activities. The selection of budget motels is a bit limited (beyond Motel 6), so anyone looking for a good deal on accommodations should head towards the Internet for a search. The restaurant and bar listings (organized by region and also indexed by type) are comprehensive and provide a good starting place to finding the spot to fit a traveler's mood.

The book concludes with contextual information about Los Angeles, including history essays, references to LA in film, and books set in LA. As a reader, I appreciate that the basic must-have facts are in the front, with the optional history section relegated to the back of the book. The maps are second to none, with exquisite detail and major areas of interest well-identified.

The Rough Guide to Los Angeles is a worthwhile investment for any pleasure-seeker, business traveler, weekend tourist, and even the hardened local who would like to know a bit more about the multitudes of activities LA has to offer.

Ein schönes Büchlein ist Count Your Way Through Germany!.......2000-05-06

This little book is quite unique. Although written in English, it presents some interesting snippets of German culture. I love the cover: a picture of Der Rattenfänger von Hameln (The Pied Piper of Hamlin). I have my own language school, and hold a Master's degree and PA Teaching Certification in German. This will be a great text for me to use to introduce German culture to children OR adults. Gott sei dank, the author does not depend on stereotypical examples, such as the Alps, Lederhosen, Wurst, Bier, to present the numbers from 1-10. Whether he is well acquainted with Germany's culture and history through his own study of German, or not, the author, nevertheless, reflects his wish to provide accurate information. I offer kudos to him for his attention to correct English grammar as well. I can't wait until Count Your Way Through Germany 1-20 comes out!

A wonderful book to introduce German culture!.......1999-03-03

As a teacher of German in an elementary school, it is always difficult to find appropriate (if any) books to use in the classroom. Although this book is written in English, therefore technically off-limits in my German-only program, it has wonderful cultural ties that can be used at some point in my classes. The pictures, if nothing else, give a lot of information about German culture. This is also a great book for regular classroom teachers wanting to introduce a new culture to their students. What a thrill to find!

The University of Nebraska Press editions of The Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition are widely heralded as a lasting achievement. In all, twelve volumes and a comprehensive index are projected, which together will provide a complete record of the expedition.

Volume 12 contains the most complete listing of the plant specimens cataloged by the Lewis and Clark expedition. All but one of the plants were collected by Meriwether Lewis, the most skilled botanist among the expedition’s members. The collection, however, was nearly lost over the years due to its scattering among various botanists who intended to catalog the expedition’s scientific discoveries. Fortunately, for many years the specimens have been in the care of major institutions, principally the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. The 239 extant items are brought together here for the first time. This invaluable volume will assist researchers and enthusiasts hoping to identify each plant’s location, distribution, and use along the expedition’s route.

The Essential Botanical Volume for Lewis and Clark Study.......2000-08-18

Number twelve in a distinguished, and, multivolume effort by Dr. Gary Moulton, The University of Nebraska, The "Herbarium" volume of "The Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition" is the most comprehensive, edited botanical reference of the known plant specimens of the Corps of Discovery, 1803-1806.

As an impressive culmination to the Journals, the herbarium collection finalizes the extensive botanical scholarship contained in the notes produced by Dr. Moulton in the previous eleven volumes, published periodically over the past twenty years. The product of extensive research into the known world repositories of the extent plant specimens, this volume contains only one known error in terms of inclusion of a plant specimen that cannot be attributed to the expedition's collection. This one specimen at the Charleston Museum has been discounted since publication.

Nevertheless, this volume contains relatively high-quality image reproductions of the known 238 specimens in the Lewis and Clark Herbarium, in addition to a clear introduction to the history of the Herbarium collection and the scholarship behind its most recent publication. 227 specimens are currently housed in the Academy of Natural Science in Philadelphia, and the remaining 11 are housed in the Kew Gardens, London. Of this list, 177 are distinct, individual specimens.

In the future, it is more than likely, despite this exhaustive effort on the part of Moulton, that a few new specimens will emerge from the depths of the American Philosophical Society, The Academy of Natural Sciences, and Kew.

Until such a time, this volume is an absolute necessity for anyone seriously interested in understanding the natural history ramifications of the expedition, the study of Lewis and Clark, and, for that matter, America's landscape legacy. One wonders how many more specimens would have been added to this collection if Lewis' early collections for the lower-Missouri had not been lost to decay during the expedition itself.

"Volume 12, Herbarium of the Lewis and Clark Expedition," Gary E. Moulton, Editor, The University of Nebraska Press, completes a fantastic series and must be added to complete one's collection of the first eleven volumes of the truly great American literary epic.

The only wish of this author would be the publication of high-resolution, color digital images of the Herbarium on CD or DVD, as a compendium to this volume. Perhaps in this way, we could all experience more clearly the wonder of viewing this most valuable treasure.

Dr. Gary Moulton should be congratulated for a job very well-done.

Vague and lacking serious information.......2000-06-11

Lots of B&W photos, some color and not near enough information. Each picture is accompanied by a price range, but that is only good for that item. What about all the variations, models, makes? I feel this book didn't give me enough information to make any educated purchases. I now know very little more than I knew before.

A Very Useful Book For Collectors of Old West Memorabilia........1999-12-14

Brand new 1999 book contains 224 pages with 500 very large black and white and 32 great color photos. It covers 1,500 western items, ranging from Art, Books and Paper, Homestead, to Hispanic Influence, Native American Memorabilia, Rodeos and Wild West Shows. Each category is well described, and prices are updated for 1999. This book was written by two experts in the field. A must have book for lovers of old western collectibles.
