Book Description
Full of heart and humor, this coming-of-age tale is no small thing — the tale of a boy's search for love and identity in the face of longing, abandonment, and uncertainty.
When twelve-year-old Nathaniel and his two sisters discover an ad in the paper for a free pony, they can hardly believe their luck. But what will their mother say? Mom's been having a hard time ever since Dad walked out on them four years ago. But caring for a pony might keep Nat and his older sister, Cid, from bickering, and it would mean so much to eight-year-old Queenie. It takes some serious persuasion — and a promise to use Nat's paper route money for the pony’s keep — but Mom finally relents.
And so begins a year of self-discovery, as Nat struggles to deal with his father's absence; look out for his younger sister, who is "different"; and recover from having his heart broken by a rich, pretty girl from school. Life is not always easy, but Nat knows that Smokey, his very own pony, will be waiting for him at the end of each day. Or will he?

No Small Thing.......2006-03-31
The book No Small Thing is a great book by Natalie Ghent is a great and adventurous book that helds a memorable story.Once a rich family and now poor since divorced now lives in a small village.Three kids to care care of of one mother.Soon the three kids finds themslves with a horse that may actually change their lives. With the accidents and the adventure of finding their dad again in the big city that moved away because of them.
I liked this book because it was a really sad and happy story together. Each chapter would at least give you a clue of what you would be reading next and it just makes you want to keep on reading. It's book in something that's really memorable to me because of the details that they describe the events going on through the problems. It may be hard to understand but in some parts it gets really emotional and it just makes you feel ike you're in the story.
Another reason that I like the book is because of how she wrote the book.On how one family had so many difficulties on one horse that she wanted her children to keep because they were so happy with it.It's sad when she tells how Queenie fell off the horse and it was really emotional for me how she wrote the story. On how three kids took care of one horse while being poor and at the edge of starvation. The whole story is based on how a horse changes the family and always give them the joy that even that if they were really poor they could still face the things ahead and forget the bad things and live while they can.
My favorite part of the book was when Queenie fell off the horse and broke her shoulder. Then their mom got mad and told them to give bakc the horse that they got for free. Then they got into a rage and ran off to the barn to protect her and tell her that they will never take her back. That they will always kepp her safe.I liked that part because i thought that that was really realistic and the way she described made me feel like sometimes that was me and it made me feel how my parenst feel if i really do shut out that i hated you and just run off to a unexpected place.
Wonderful.......2006-03-20
Ghent's work is precise, well paced and captivating. While by all means a horse story, No Small Thing has many other layers, and is not at all for hippophiles only - of course, equine enthusiasts will find it special, too. A distinctive peice of equine literature, it covers a theme uncommon to all horse books before it; it's not about winning a show, or rescuing an injured foal. Instead, it covers a much more intense, realistic topic- a trio of sibling's uphill struggle to afford to keep their pony, in the face of severe povery.
An interesting mix of characters, occurances, and memories blend together smoothly to create this "different" kind of a horse story.

Product Description
Kirsty's got a secret--a big, four-legged secret . . . When they moved out to the country after the divorce, Mom promised Kirsty a pony of her own. Then Lancelot practically drops in her lap, and Kirsty empties her money box to buy him. He's skinny and starved and only half trained for riding. But he's hers, all hers, and Kirsty is overwhelmed with joy. Because of Lancelot, Kirsty finds a new friend, Faye, whose grandmother, Lucy, runs a pony farm. Because of their friendship, she finds a place to board her pony, and because she makes herself so useful around the place, she finds herself signed up for riding lessons as well. But what she can't seem to find are the words to tell her mother that the pony she'll be riding is her own. Then Kirsty falls and finds herself in the hospital--and in hot water with her family and friends. First there's bickering and blame, then disappointment, and finally doom: Lancelot must go. But at the last moment, Kirsty finds the support she needs, and it comes from the most unexpected source.

WONDERFUL!.......2006-04-18
This story is one I would love to give to a new mother. It's a wonderful story with spendid illustrations.
I wish it were on the market. It's as good a gift for a new mom as the famous "Love You Forever" book.

Customer Reviews:
Waste of money - call someone for latest information.......2006-02-02
I can only assume that the people who rated this book positively did so before they travelled to the Bahamas. Here is the short and skinny version of my comments: 50% of the information I tried in the book was incorrect. The restaurants had changed, key tourist spots were closed, and hotels they said were amazing were absolute crap. Some of the places that were no longer open, like the Bird Watching Nature Reserve, had been closed for two years. SOme of the people at the hotel laughed when I showed them parts of the book.
The Bahamas have been hit by major tropical storms and hurricanes and have suffered due to this. Things close every month and if you want the latest and greatest information, call a hotel that you are considering staying at and get them to tell you what you can do if you stay there. This book was a waste of money.
I will post the same rating for the Frommer's book, so do not think this is simply a negative for Fodors. I will say that Frommer's was the worse of the two, but Fodor's only get's 2 stars to Frommer's 1.
Book Description
Venture through the unknown lands beyond the Mississippi with Lewis and Clark, their crew of army men, the slave York, the young Shoshone guide Sacagawea, and a dog named Seaman. See the party brave all kinds of hair-raising obstacles in its search for a water route to the Pacific Ocean. Rosalyn Schanzer's marvelously detailed and engaging illustrations work beautifully with excerpts from Clark's journal and other primary resources to re-create one of America's greatest adventures. From hostile terrain to helpful Indians, from boating disaster to grizzly bear encounter, the people, places, and events of this amazing expedition come to life on every page of this outstanding picture book.
Customer Reviews:
A Great American Tale.......2004-05-09
The adventure and thrill of the Lewis & Clark Expedition is brought to life here in a story that both children and adults could appreciate. In beautiful and carefully rendered folk-style illustrations, and with descriptive text from the actual journals of the participants, the book has the appearance of something that almost could have been written in the early 1800's, when the expedition occurred. Rosalyn Schanzer's personal interest in the subject, especially the journals and the Indian tribes, seems to bring out the best in the storytelling, which primarily illustrates the first 1 1/2 years of the Corps of Discovery's journey to the Pacific Ocean. The story is accessible and easily understood, yet the attention to detail should satisfy those trying to learn, and even researchers in this important chapter in early American History.
Lovely Illustrations.......2003-01-20
A very good book about the Lewis & Clark expedition. The illustrations were vivid and the best part of the book. I would recommend this book
Superbly presented in an exciting picturebook format.......2002-05-17
Set in 1804, How We Crossed The West by Rosalyn Schanzer is the true story of the incredibly adventurous Lewis & Clark expedition exploring westward from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean (May 1804 to November 1805). Superbly presented in an exciting picturebook format for young readers, the "reader friendly" text is taken from the original journals of the explorers themselves, though slightly edited for clarity. The wealth of illustrations are warm, colorful acrylic/colored pencil designs that bring a great journey through early America vividly to life. As educational as it is entertaining, How We Crossed The West is a superbly presented history and very highly recommended for school and community library collections.
"Primary Source" of Information.......2002-04-02
This book is an excellent example of a primary source of information. I originally bought the book because I believed it would be a good resource for teaching about the Lewis and Clark Expedition, but after I got it and realized the text was created from journal entries made by Lewis, Clark and others, I was truly excited to be teaching from this book. There is just enough text per page so as not to be overwhelming to elementary students and the illustrations are gorgeous.
Outstanding Children's Book!.......2000-05-12
My son (4th grade)recently did a report on William Clark. He used several resources but kept coming back to this one. The day after he completed his project I sat down to read the book myself - what a treat! I think the information is so interesting - much of it taken from the actual journals of Lewis, Clark and the Corp of Explorers! The illustrations are a great compliment to the story being retold! Because the copy he was using was from the public library I am ordering one for us to keep. I look forward to finding more books by Schanzer - I hope all of her books are as well written and illustrated!

Customer Reviews:
Terrific job, Paula and Lori! What an accomplishment!.......2007-10-12
What a wonderful accomplishment for Paula and Lori! The information pertaining to early purses such as misers, pockets, chatelaines, textiles and needlework purses! I especially enjoyed the chapter on purse restoration. The photos of the figural & scenic purses are absolutely amazing. The celluloid and compact purse examples were also a delight.
For everyone who knows these two lovely ladies, they know that they truly have a passion for purses. Many times I have heard of Paula donating her time to deliver public presentations, printing and passing out breakthrough information on early purses and donating them to interested parties, as well as contributing to other books including mine. If anyone deserves a pat on the back for this groundbreaking book, it is these two ladies, Paula Higgins and Lori Blaser. Congratulations ladies! Well done!
Magnificent!.......2007-05-17
What a beautiful book; filled with glorious bags of the past, historical information and current values. There are hundreds of bags, created using techniqes such as beading, embroidery, tapestry, netting, crochet, knitting, tambour, loom, petit point and various stitchery. Gorgeous bags are displayed - eye-smacking delicious- that I have not seen in other collectible publications; a real plus for collectors. There is a chapter dedicated to restoration of vintage bags, with instructions for repair and cleaning, plus photos; tips when purchasing bags; and choosing the right purse frames. At the back of the book, page 256, I was delighted to see the two contemporary bags by Katerina Musetti, an artist and established opera singler; the bags are exquisite. It is obvious this book is a culmination of Paula and Lori's purse obsession, historical studies and labor. I highly recommend this inspiring book for collectors, as well as, bag enthusiasts; a book not to be missed. Review by Lydia F. Borin, The Beadwrangler
Passion for Purses.......2007-05-12
'Passion for Purses' is a beautiful, quality reference book for all purse lovers & collectors; from novice to the serious collector. The book has special emphasis on very early antique purses by one of the most knowledgeable persons around today. Contains previously unseen purses from private collections that have never before been published. Hundreds of pictures on quality paper, excellent information on the many catagories of purses that are included. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a passion for purses. Great book for study or pleasure.A Passion for Purses, 1600-2005
Purse book to die for.......2007-05-09
For those of us mere mortals who can love from afar and have a "Passion for Purses" and.. the collectors among us, WOW. This book is a consumate collection of the incredible history and workmanship of this much needed and desired personal item. The descriptions and photographs of each purse made me feel as though I was almost visiting them in person. The depth and breadth of the collections plus the amazing amount of detail & photos given on the handpicked items for this book made me feel as though I got a real education and my money's worth for sure. I still cannot figure out how these authors gained so much knowledge and still have lives other than their immersion in purses...do they, I ask? This book was written by people who LOVE what they do. I have read and reread this book too many times already. My husband actually was impressed. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable as I was an antique dealer for years, but I have seen things in this book that I never even knew existed. A "Passion for Purses" - my compliments. This is the first book I have ever bothered to review but - it is just that FABULOUS.

Make the most of the Golden State's unique climate and planting conditions.
Customer Reviews:
The very best for Southern California gardeners.......2007-09-21
If you are tired of gardening advice that's good on the East Coast, but doesn't work in Southern California, this is the book for you. It provides real solutions for our unique climate, advice from local professionals, and a reliable planting schedule. This book and Sunset Magazine's Western Garden Book are all you need for successful gardening in Southern California. And in spite of the tone of this review, I have no affiliation whatsoever with the author or publisher :)
A book written in and for my own backyard.......2001-07-16
The combination of this book plus Sunset's Western Garden Book will arm the southern California garden enthusiast with all the tools and experience necessary to give a green thumb's up. A true plant geek will find validation and a friend in Smaus' and will read the book saying "been there, loved that". Activities like hoarding plants bought from the Huntington Garden's May plant sale struck a familiar chord.
A transplant to Southern Cal. will quickly gain the inside track to where to go and what to plant to make the best of this unique climate.
Excellent Reference.......2000-06-05
Coming from New England I needed a lot of advice on what to do with the clay soil and arid climate in Southern California. The Sunset Western Garden Book along with this selection is a great combination for those new to gardening in Southern California. (Try the soil amendment recipe, it worked wonders form me!)
FINALLY !.......1999-12-29
Thank You Mr. Smaus ! Finally a book that talks directly to the Southern California gardener. If you live and garden in the So. CA area this is the book you need. Maybe I won't have so many failures in the coming year. This book opened my eyes wide.
Excellent........1999-07-13
If you live in Los Angeles, you need this book. Smaus is the garden writer for the excretal Los Angeles Times and one of its sole redeeming virtues. Smaus covers a range of topics, including plantings suggested for our area and timing of various tasks. Unlike most gardening books, which are written for East Coast or Mid-West audiences, and which are generally unhelpful for our unique climate, Smaus' advice has proven consistently accurate. The book's sole flaw is the lack of an index. Because the articles are short and there is a detailed table of contents, this is not a major problem. Highly recommended.
