Book Description
INTRODUCTION"Ecuador, so tiny on the map of the world, has always possessed the grandeur of a great country to those who know her well." Albert B. Franklin, Ecuador: Portrait of a People
Sitting on the equator between Colombia and Peru, Ecuador is the smallest of the Andean nations, covering an area no bigger than Nevada. For all its diminutive size, however, the country is packed with the most startling contrasts of scenery, taking in steaming tropical rainforests, windswept highlands, ice-capped volcanoes and palm-fringed beaches, all within easy reach of the capital, Quito. It's a land of bold contours and heightened colours, where you can find yourself beneath a canopy of dripping vegetation amongst clouds of neon-coloured butterflies one day, and in a highland market, mixing with scarlet-ponchoed indigenas the next. It's also a country of astounding biodiversity, boasting 1600 species of bird (more per area than any other South American country), 4500 species of butterfly and over 3500 species of orchid, to cite just a few examples. Add to this the country's stunning colonial architecture and diverse indigenous groups, and it becomes clear why Ecuador is ! regarded by many as a sort of South America in miniature, offering a pocket-sized microcosm of almost everything travellers hope to find on this bewitching continent. As if more were called for, its attractions are triumphantly capped off by the Galapagos Islands, whose extraordinary wildlife has gone down in history for its pivotal role in shaping Charles Darwin's theories on evolution. Geographically, Ecuador's mainland divides neatly into three distinct regions running the length of the country in parallel strips. In the middle is the sierra, formed by the eastern and western chains of the Andes that surge abruptly into the clouds from the lowlands either side. Punctuated by over thirty volcanoes, the two chains are joined by a series of high plateaux at around 2800m above sea level, separated by gentle transverse ridges, or nudos ("knots" of hills). This is the agricultural and indigenous heartland of Ecuador, a region of patchwork fields crawling up the mountainsides, of stately haciendas and dozens of remote communities. The sierra is also home to many of the country's oldest and most important cities, including Quito. East of the sierra is the Oriente, a large, sparsely populated area extending into the upper Amazon basin, much of it covered by dense tropical rainforest - an exhilarating, exotic region, though under increasing threat from oil-production and colonization. West of the sierra, the coastal region is formed by a fertile alluvial plain, used for growing tropical crops such as bananas, sugar, coffee and cacao, and bordered on its Pacific seaboard by a string of beaches, mangrove swamps, shrimp farms and ports. Almost a thousand kilometres of ocean separate the coastline from the Galapagos archipelago, annexed by Ecuador in 1832. All this provides a home to some fourteen million people, the majority of whom live on the coast and in the sierra. They are descendants, for the most part, of the various indigenous populations that first inhabited Ecuador's territory, of the Incas who colonized these lands in the late fifteenth century, of the Spaniards who conquered the Inca empire in the 1530s and of the African slaves brought by the Spanish colonists. Although the mixing of blood over many centuries has resulted in a largely mestizo (mixed) population, the indigenous component remains very strong, particularly among the Quichua-speaking communities of the rural sierra, and the various ethnic groups of the Oriente such as the Shuar, the Achuar, the Huaorani and Secoya, while on the north coast there's a significant black population. As in many parts of Latin America, social and economic divisions between indigenas, blacks, mestizos and an elite class of whites remain deeply entrenched, exacerbated here by ! a slew of recent economic and political crises. And yet, even as poverty and unemployment increase, as their national currency is lost to the US dollar and their political leaders continually fail to tackle the country's problems, the overwhelming majority of Ecuadorians remain resilient, remarkably cheerful, and extremely courteous and welcoming towards visitors.

Opening the door to Ecuador.......2001-01-02
The Rough Guide provided us with essential information on how to travel and tips on safety and health proved very helpful.
Thanks also to the authors for including information on the damage being done to Ecuador's pristine rainforest and indigenous communities by a few oil companies. This is something that senstive tourists need to be aware of - the rare and fascinating tribal communities, the jungle wildlife and natural beauty we travelled to see are in real danger because of the actions of a few short term organisations who are right now planning a big push into the Oriente region.
Overall this is a really good, clear guide book with excellent recommendations for where to stay, what to do and even good tips on where to eat, drink and party. Don't go up the jungle without it! Thanks from Carmel McConnell and Catherine Purkiss

Book Description
Typotektur takes a look at posters from various countries and periods that share a special feature of typography: the tendency to break out of the two-dimensional space of lettering and establish hybrid links with architecture. Letters, words, and entire sentences form architectural figures that can be read both as pictures and as words. The playful handling of typography has led to an exhilarating wealth of variations in the history of poster art. Starting with contemporary poster design, the widely divergent strands of development in the architectural treatment of lettering are here traced back in time through the 20th century. The fifth book in a series based on the poster collection of the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich.

Just in time for the 40th anniversary of its original publication, Margery Fish's classic gardening memoir has been published in the United States for the first time. Fish and her husband Walter, a former editor of the Daily Mail, bought a dilapidated house and two acres of limey clay in Somerset in 1937, fearing the onset of war. For the next two decades, they cultivated, pruned, and watered, with Walter providing the direction and the sense of order and Margery the flowers, the unstructured flora, and the wry observations. As in all of the best gardening books, Fish's memoir leavens technical information on gardening with memory and reflection. The book is above all the story of a marriage within the story of a landscape. Walter's lectures on the importance of structure, the distant war, the hardships of postwar England, come through slightly muted, like the outlines of buildings seen through dense foliage.Book Description
First published in Britain in 1956 and never before available in America, We Made a Garden is the classic story of a unique and enduring English country garden. One of Britain’s most esteemed gardening writers recounts how she and her husband set about creating an exemplary cottage garden from unpromising beginnings on the site of the former farmyard and rubbish heap that surround their newly purchased home in the countryside of Somerset, England. Each imbued with a strong set of horticultural opinions and passions, Mr. and Mrs. Fish negotiate the terrain of their garden, by turns separately and together, often with humorous collisions. From the secret to cultivating the smoothest lawn to the art of lifting and replanting tulip bulbs to the landscaping possibilities of evergreens, the diverse elements of successful gardening—and delightful writing—are bound together by Mr. and Mrs. Fish’s aspiration to cultivate that most precious and slow-growing quality—the fundamental character of a good garden.Customer Reviews:
Great Garden, Great Book, Not So Great Marriage.......2004-02-25
The book is haunted by the presence of Walter, and his likes and dislikes, and right ways and wrong ways to do anything. You can't help but feel Mrs Fish must have breathed the world's biggest sigh of relief at his passing, since it finally allowed her to get on with her gardening.
Here's a sample: Walter would smother her seedlings by putting too much manure around HIS roses, he decorated the outbuildings with bought mounted animal trophy heads (until they rotted), and he would stand guard over his wife while she planted dahlias to ensure she did so 'correctly.'
Not to be missed! (And for others in the just-as-absorbing-when-not-about-the-garden books, you must turn to Beverley Nichols and any of his brilliantly charming works about house or garden).
Note: a 3 star ranking from me is actually pretty good; I reserve 4 stars for tremendously good works, and 5 only for the rare few that are or ought to be classic; unfortunately most books published are 2 or less.
A Slightly Depressing Weed Of A Book.......2003-01-30
Garden story...........2002-11-28
Fish's little book will be considered a gem by experienced gardeners who can picture the plants she names in the mind's eye, identify with her triumphs and failures, and appreciate a useful clues from an obviously seasoned hand. Garden veterans will also identify with the greedy gardener who never has enough space, the stubborn gardener who plants Nepeta despite it's runaway habits, the recalcitrant gardener who hides the verboten brilliant orange Lychnis chalcedonica at the back of the beds, and the disobedient gardener who leaves many openings in the cemented walkway hubby designed to thwart weeds.
The book may appear a bit dense to the new gardener as it describes activities such as composing flower beds, creating walkways, and engineering rock gardens with inferior rocks, with no illustrations, other than a few black and white photos-one of Mrs Fish on bended knee at work in her rock garden. However, all is not lost. Determined gardeners unfamiliar with the various plants Mrs Fish names can refer to a nursery catalogue since 60-70 percent of the plants available in the 1950s can be found contemporary mail order publications

RALPH COTTON HAS DONE BETTER!!!.......2001-02-22
Jesse James had a twin brother.......1998-04-23
Jesse James? Even today the name rings with excitement. Ralph Cotton brings that excitement roaring to life in his romantic first novel: WHILE ANGELS DANCE published by St Martin's Press.
One thing about Jesse James, everybody has an opinion, and nobody else agrees with it.
With a subject this volatile, you open the book with a ready sneer, ready to pounce on all the facts sure to be a little awry. But there is a delightful surprise in store. This writing is so good the sneer is immediately transformed into a grin of sheer delight.
Who cares about chasing down facts when you can go chasing down the old owlhoot trail with the 'real' Jesse James that Mr. Cotton has dreamed up?
A writer's job is to raise that curtain of the mind and create a reality the reader can actually see, hear, touch and smell. Ralph Cotton jumps right in, and pulls the reader in after him. In just a matter of minutes the smoke is boiling and outlaws with the bark on stand in the shimmering light with guns blazing.
There's no turning back, from the first page to the last, you will be anxiously watching the shadows to see what happens next.
"You could stumble into more trouble in two minutes than you could crawl out of in a hundred years." in those days.
Jeston Nash killed a Yankee soldier over a horse trade in Kentucky and the only place he could run to was the home of his Aunt Zeralda Samuel, the mother of Frank and Jesse James.
"Look here," she said to Doc Samuel. "He looks enough like Jesse to be his brother."
Frank and Jesse were off riding under the black flag of Quantrill's guerillas. The rumors of Nash's presence bring them back, leery of a trap. "I'd been drawing a fresh bucket of water from the well; the only sound in the stillness of morning was the squeaking crank handle and the clucking of chickens scratching in the dirt. Then all at once behind me, a horse nickered low, and the single heavy thud of a hoof jarred the ground. I froze, felt the skin ripple on my neck, and wondered in that split second how the hell a rider could've slipped in without them chickens raising a fuss."
It was Frank. "Frank could lock on to your eyes like a coiled viper, and though I learned to overcome it in time, that day at the well, off guard, I just stood there staring, dumbfounded by the sudden appearance of this stranger with a friendly smile and a voice like gravel wrapped in silk. And behind him ... less than fifteen feet ... not one rider ... but six! They'd slipped in as quiet as smoke, and sat there atop their horses, looking hard eyed and evil."
WHILE ANGELS DANCE has two things going for it: The characters are so real you dread finding out what might happen to them next, and the outlaw humor has your face laughing before you realize your belly is shaking.
For example, Quiet Jack had been living with a widow for some time when Jeston came to call. "You know, she killed her husband," Jack said casually the day we dug up the bank money.
He smiled affectionately. "Yep, stabbed him in the heart while he was asleep."
"Does that bother you when you go to bed of a night?" I asked.
"Why should it?" he laughed. "We ain't married!"
However, the token sex scenes are much too toxic even for a professional reader like me. Is all this trysting really that necessary?
The first one is more than a chapter long and could easily have been cut in half without the novel suffering any serious trauma. The blue language is almost black in places, but so naturally used that it doesn't actually ruin the story.
Only two, very brief scenes, jar the jaded senses. Both are deep into the novel and this reader probably only noticed them because discovering any less-than-perfect writing was a shock by that time.
A movie from this effort is almost unavoidable. Unfortunately, like Hondo, not even another John Wayne could make it as good as the original.
