This is one of the best travel books I have ever used. It emphasizes things to do and see, also history and culture about the area. It uses informative maps and photos of Belize that I found very helpful.

We'll be using this book, I'm sure, on our first trip to Belize in May of 1999. Belize isn't a country that most people have been to --- I would imagine --- so I think that pictures would have helped this book out tremendously.

Great History Book!.......2000-05-21

I liked this book because it starts in year 1000 and ends with year 2000 celebrations. For each year, this book tells you at least one important thing that happened in that year. For example, here's what it lists in 1985 (I picked this very important year because that's when I was born!): The unseeded West German tennis player, 17-year-old Boris Becker, makes history whe he becomes the youngest Wimbeldon Men's Singles Champion.

and... Holland's Phillips and Japan's Sony introduce the CD-ROM (Compact Disk Read-Only Memory.

and... A 48-game chess match betweent world champion Anatoly Karpov and Gary Kasparov, both of the USSR, ends after 5 months due to Karpov's exhaustion. Karpov eventually loses his title to the 22-year-old Kasparov.

and... One person is killed when the GREENPEACE ship Rainbow Warrior, in the South Pacific to disrupt French nuclear tests, is sunk by an explosion in Auckland, New Zealand, two French service agents are later found guilty of manslaughter and sabotage. AND..... The Nevada del Ruiz VOLCANO erupts in Colombia, killing some 25,000 people.

I also liked how this book was divided into age periods, The Age of Religion, The Age of Conquest, The Age of Expansion, The Age of Revelation, The Age of Commerce, The Age of Revolution, The Age of Industry, The Age of Technology, adn Celebration. A very cool book!

Practical help schooling or re-schooling your horse.......2000-05-01

This book emphasizes practical schooling, or re-schooling, that will prepare your horse for dressage or jumping. It is written in a conversational tone and is one of the few books on training horses that can be read cover to cover, as opposed to the majority of horse books that the reader puts down after a chapter or two and thereafter only consults for reference when things are going wrong. It is more "real-world" than most books, giving advice on solving the most common problems that arise and not assuming everything will go smoothly from day one. The author's philosophy is grounded in classical training, oriented toward reward rather than punishment and creating the conditions for proper work. There are no short cuts, no fiddling with the reins to get the head down, for example. One reader in a dressage catalog stated that this book and Reiner Klimke's were her favorites. Having also taken instruction from the author, I can state that his approach works and that there is no discrepancy between the written page and the riding arena.

This book was easy to read and told alot about apples. It had great pictures too. I really liked the part at the end where it showed the life cycle of the apple. Anyone interested in apples should read this book. Crunch!

This book is colourful and interactive. It allows an educator to tailor the book to it's audience of toddlers to school age.

Perennial Favorite.......2000-08-29

My grandchildren, ages 4 and 18 months, never tire of thisbook! It holds their interest more than any other book they own. Although the recommended age is 4-8, at mcuh earlier ages they loved the vivid colors, shapes, and illustrations. The cut-out shapes fascinate them, whether for a game of peek-a-boo, or the action involved in flipping the page and seeing a different picture behind each cutout. As my 4-year-old learns to read, he now enjoys the book at a different level but just as much. The illustrations are beautiful and even hold my interest with repeated readings, something I can't say for other children's books. In instituting values, we also like the message of diversity, which the children perceive easily as they recognize and relate to the hands of people of different colors. If you're only buying one children's book as a gift, for the children's own library, or to keep for your granchild's visits, this is an absolute must for ages 1 to 8.

Barreling inside, Sam was wiping off his shoes when Ellen and Maxie appeared in front of him, both of them looking shaken to the core.
"Thank goodness you're home," Ellen said, her voice quavering. "Mom and Dad were in a car accident."

Sam I Am, by Ilene Cooper, is a story in which 12-year-old Sam Goodman must discover how his family can stay together when they practice different religions: His mother is Christian and his father is Jewish. It is a riveting novel; it makes you think about the different faiths and why they have fought against each other over the years.

One appealing aspect of the book is how middle schoolers can relate to it. Sam is just a normal 7th grader; he hangs out with friends, does his homework, and sleeps in late. Also, he has younger and older siblings, which can be a pest or a comfort to middle graders.

Another highlight of the novel is how the plot is always moving along. Whether it be going to the mall, hanging out at a party, or participating in a snowball fight, Sam is always doing something. The story flies along even faster when Sam discovers that his dad has been sent to the hospital after a car accident.

One more interesting part of the book is how it relates to the real world, talking about fights over religion from the past and in the present. When Sam learns about the Holocaust in school, he ponders why God let all those people die. He wonders why faiths are still fighting, and speculates on how he can help. Sam tries to figure out why people just can't get along.

Sam I Am is powerful realistic fiction, perfect for any kid or teenager. It truly makes someone think about different religions, and how they are related to the world today.

A warm, humorous exploration of family relationships.......2004-12-11

The trouble all started for twelve-year-old Sam Goodman the day the family dog, Pluto, knocked over the Hanukkah bush. With a Jewish father and a Christian mother, Sam has grown up in a family with mixed religions. Rather than learn about each religion fully, his parents decide to let their children choose their faiths when they are old enough.

After the destruction of the Hanukkah bush (his parents' compromise, created as a mixture of both of their faiths), the Goodmans decide to try something different this year. Since Hanukkah and Christmas Eve fall on the same day, a dual celebration is planned. Both grandmothers join the family for dinner and gift exchanging. Unfortunately, the evening does not go as swiftly as planned. Sam wonders what all the fuss is about religion and why people keep fighting over it.

Sam's best friend Avi is preparing for his Bar Mitzvah, and Sam wonders why no one ever asked him if he wanted to be Bar Mitzvah-ed. In his confusion, he starts talking to God but finds that God doesn't answer back. Instead, Sam has to figure out the answers on his own.

Reminiscent of ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT'S ME, MARGARET by Judy Blume, SAM I AM tells an important story that is common in many families today. Author Ilene Cooper uses humor and warmth to explore the relationships between Sam and his family, but she doesn't forget to also include the other trials and tribulations that typical twelve-year-olds face.
