Dr. Tavassoli, unfortunately, employs classification schemes which are not widely used or accepted. Elston and Ellis or Page's upcoming new addition are better choices.
An excellent book worth investing in.......2000-11-01
It is rare in any field of medicine to have such an incredibly detailed and comprehensive book being written by a single author. The depth of knowledge, the number of references and the copious illustrations are an invaluable tool for study and reference. The prose is lucid and logically organised. I recommend this book to all aspiring pathologist as well as those who are sitting for their FRACP.

It would seem that this book has not been updated in some time since The Blue Man Group hasn't been performing at Luxor for over a year.

I recently took my family to Las Vegas. With young children we were not able to spend time in the casinos. I bought this guide and it helped me to plan the vacation which included details on nightlife, shows, and celebrity restaurants. The guide was easy to carry around and offered options that could fit into any budget. We found out that there was more to do in Vegas than gamble!

I don't know how old I was when I first learned of the Nazi death camps; the Holocaust was an unknown word. As an adult, young children come to me asking for books about the Holocaust. I am confronted with the question, how much information to give and what form should it take? In this picture book Hiding from the Nazis, David Adler, in slightly stilted, but in unambiguous words lays out the pivotal moments of Hitler's systematic persecution and murder of the Jews in the Netherlands. This true story centers on Lore Gottschall and highlights the danger, isolation, and deep break of trust suffered by those who hid from the Nazis. This story cannot be told with out bringing to light the courage of Dutch families who bravely hid Jews from Nazi invaders. Lore is separated from her family and hidden on a farm in Holland at great peril to her protectors and shows the sacrifice her family made to survive in a personal way. Mr. Adler also shows how rocky the reunion of the Gottschall family was and shares what happened to the Danish family and the Gottschall's after World War II ended. The illustrations of Karen Ritz clearly show the story with color, facial expressions and movement.

April 28, 1945, eight months after he was shot down over Nazi-Fascist controlled Northern Italy during World War II, Corporal Francis Medina walked back into his squadron headquarters. Most World War II MIAs returned within a few weeks or not at all. Successfully evading the enemy for eight months was a rare accomplishment, yet this is what he did. This is the exciting and heartwarming story of the 20 year old tail gunner's life with two families of the Italian Resistance. Living with teh Masieros and the Zangirolamis, Francis Medina became Francesco. If you liked the first book you need to have this one too. Very good continuation to first one. Lots of new fish and plant species and some mistakes done in the first book are corrected in this one.
A 2nd volume to, IMHO, the best all-round aquaria reference.......1998-10-10
A large and recommendable guide to fresh and brackish water fishes and plants, in the style and format of volume 1 (to which it often refers for further information on related species).
Contents:
- A section on aquatic plants both sub-aquatic and emersed, including 22 pages dedicated to the flowers of the plants featured (mostly pictures - from the small and humble to the impressively coloured and shaped). 150 plants are described (according to their count).
- A section on iron and other nutrients: symptoms of deficiencies, fertilisation, CO2 addition and general plant care and choice guidelines (about 10 pages total, includes some pictures of symptoms of common plant problems)
- A section on algae, including description, pictures and control for: blue-green algae (cyanobacteria), diatoms (a.k.a. brown algae), and cluster, beard, green bunch, green spot, black spot, pelt, black brush, filamentous and suspended algae (9 pages, with pictures).
- Some 22 pages on anatomy and physiology of fishes.
- The largest section (almost 2000 pages) describes and contains pictures of some 850 species (again, on editor's count). From time to time a picture of a biotope is included - sometimes with specifications as to the fishy inhabitants, sometimes with miscellaneous comments. The origin of these is quite unbalanced: while South America scores some 17 photos, lake Malawi makes do with 4 (though 2 are underwater ones - the only ones to be so!), lake Tanganyka with just one, Australia with 3 and Asia with 1. The rest go completely unrecorded. To make matters worse most of these are landscape pictures giving little information about the actual habitat of the fish or plants. Only in one picture can aquatic plants clearly be seen (apart from water lilies, that is) - no specific biotope information is given for plants at all.
All in all this is, I believe, a great reference book on plants and fish. It shows many remarkable plants and fish, many of which are not even normally commercialised. Great for the terminally curious and those whose imagination runs ahead of their tanks' possibilities. But not a good source of biotope information (other than short descriptions and hints contained in the individual species descriptions).

Vol 2 not much help for aquarist.......2003-02-23
A good book if you are a diver and collect your own specimens and need to identify them, Pictures are well done and in color and makes for good and enjoyable reading. The chart at the bottom shows a nice table for suggesting watermovement, temperature range, difficulty factor for raising, availability in the trade.
I give it one star because although nicely done 90% of the speciments pictures are listed as unavailable to the trade or protected species and unavailable. 90% are also recommended for people with at least two years of marine experience. It was written at a college level as to a lot of the terms. To be fair I believe two items were listed as a difficulty level of one (snails) and maybe three or four in the level three catagory. Level 4 being the highest degree of difficulty.
There is not very much for a beginner or intermediate aquarist looking for things to add to their aquarium since they are listed as unavailable. It would of been much better if it had listed more items readily available and in the easy to moderate range of difficulty. I would not recommend this book to anyone trying to find, identify, or purchase items for an aquarium, especially beginners. For the advanced marine aquarist it has some beautiful pictures and info.
However this was an atlas and not necessarily intended for aquarium buffs.
Good follow-up of the original!.......2001-09-29
Well,I own the german original edition of this book,which I got before it was released in english,but it`s the same book. I can still read some german - it`s an easy language to understand.
Anyway,I prefer to write a review in english.
When I got the first book about two or three years ago,I thought there was something missing. There was only fishes of the order Perciformes,and the only invertebrates included were crustaceans and some anemones. I thought that was very strange. As there was some trouble when making this massive seven-book series,the second volume should have included other fish,but instead,here comes the missed invertebrates. It begins with a lot of sponges.
Although care advices are beeing given,sponges are NOT recommended as aquarium animals,due to their feeding habits. Therefore,all of them has a high difficult grade. But if you shall go diving in the caribbean or something,it could be valueable as a marine life identification guide.
The next chapter are treating the missing cnidarians from the first book,with stony corals and soft corals,and even some jellyfish!This section is taking up almost the half of the book,but as the corals is a rather dominating group of marine animals,that is completley understandable. Practical advice are beeing given for all of them. After reading it,I would mostly recommend the leather corals as suitable aquarium animals. Forget the jellyfish. The stony corals often have beautifull shapes but they`re not very colourfull. After this huge chapter,the next animal group dealt with are the flatworms. We often think of worms as disgusting animals,but these are very beutifull,but difficult too keep in an aquarium as they eat sponges. They are often mistaken for sea snails,but they have no gills on their back. Also included are the comb jellyfishes,a rare group of pelagic sea animals related to jellyfishes.
The final chapter are dealing with the molluscs,a very diverse group of marine animals. Here,we can see mostly shells of different kinds,and they are very beautifull and varied. Especially the small,but incredible section for nudibranchs. Some of these shells,altough not the cowries,can be kept in a marine aquarium very easily. So far,this book has been a valueable resource for me,as it has so many species included. Do not forget to buy the first and third volume,while volume 4-7 are additional species introduced. I do not own volume 5,but I`ll get that some time too. But so far,volume 1,2,3,4,6 & 7 are the BEST marine life identification guides available!
Marine Atlas Volume 3.......2000-04-27
I was quite pleased with the content of this volume. The information is very concise, informative, and accurate. The location information as to where you could locate the various species could not be surpassed. This is a must for any diver, or marine biologist.
