From the "100 Best Resorts" series by The Globe Pequot Press. The
authors point out that travelers save up to 25 percent of vacation
costs when booking all-inclusive stays. Rates start at $800 per week, per person; the average cost per couple is $2,500 per week. In addition, all-inclusive travelers often receive airfare discounts; for instance, Club Med (the original all-inclusive) has exclusive deals with airlines while the owner of the Sandals chain also has a controlling interest in Air Jamaica.

All-inclusive resorts offer one price for all services, gratuities, food, and lodging. If nothing else, it is an amazing peace-of-mind feeling to go on vacation knowing the exact cost. There are no surprises, especially in cost, with all-inclusive resorts; consistent quality is another trademark. The resorts were originally designed for singles but now cater to couples and families, too.

This book excludes European properties, in spite of Club Med starting there some 50 years ago. The rankings and the book have a very US-centric focus. 84% of the properties are in North America, including US, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. In fact, this book could serve as a useful guide for someone choosing between resorts in Jamaica and Mexico (27% of the listings).

Contact points, including toll-free telephone numbers and Web sites, are provided for each listing. Check with either or both for package deals, specials, or other additional information. Prices for most properties are listed per person, per day, even though the Introduction indicated that most stays are for one week. It would be nice to have weekly rates listed, especially if they are different (that is, less) than the daily rate times seven. Another silly inconsistency that bothered me is that airports (and other information) are listed in different formats;
perhaps because the authors merely duped the information provided by the resorts. For instance, the closest airport for most of the Jamaican resorts was listed three different ways, although it was the same airport (Donald Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay). Also, airports are listed in time, distance, or both from the resorts. This would probably bother only me.

Over the past few years I have visited several of the resorts listed in this book. I've found the management and conditions excellent. I like the resorts so much that I wouldn't want the mass market or other wrong-headed persons to visit. That makes me hesitate to promote these spots too much. However, in the face of the curious pans on some of the resorts from other Amazon readers, I felt compelled to make note of my own times at these Best All-Inclusives! I'd also like to mention my absolute favorite but that I'm going to keep a secret of course!

We bought the book because it seemed thorough and well written at first glance. Both my wife and I eventually read most of it -- it was entertaining and well done. We used it to select the kind of vacation we wanted and the particular resort. I found it to have a lot of diverse, interesting choices with great detail. We traveled to a resort in the Bahamas that the Parises recommended and found it to be exactly as described -- and in some ways even better! We have since lent it to a neighbor with our high recommendations. I know places can change for the better or worse quickly, but we definitely were pleased --

We visited two of the so-called 'Best' all-inclusives in this book, and they were terrible (neglected, unkept, terrible food). I wouldn't trust this book, and certainly would not use it to plan a hard-earned vacation.

Despite the title this is almost entirely about the US and its' near neighbours. Europe and Asia get a cursory glance. The resort coverage itself is sparse and there are few illustrations.

Review of "This Rimy River".......2000-05-22

This was a book that I purchased a few years back direct from the company. I heard that there is a new book on Vaughn Oliver and v23's work coming someday soon. In the meantime, I thought that I might write this review.

The book format is big with plenty of lovely photos and nice subtle details (i.e. silver ink throughout the pages). It really makes you see the evolution of his work over the years of v23's conception. There are also quotes throughout the book from fellow musicians and designers who have come to know Vaughan Oliver that make for a very nice retrospective.

The only problems with this book is that I wish that it had more text particularly from the Vaughan Oliver himself about his experiences and design methods. The book format is easy to damage and get dirty, and the inks from one page sometimes rub off onto the next page.

Other than that, a good book overall.

Good, not great.......2007-02-09

Interesting in parts, but it didn't live up to the title. I found it to be more of an exploration of how dogs became domesticated over thousands of years, and the ways in which they differ from their wild brethren. There were some good insights, but overall I felt it was too "clinical", for lack of a better word. I much preferred the author's How To Speak Dog.

This is an excellent book. i believe all dog owners who love thier best friend must read it.

john fisher is a dog behaviourist, read: dog shrink. reading between the lines of this book, i believe he is very dedicated and is driven strongly by his love for dogs.

in the first chapter of this book, he explains what it is he does - he listens and looks at how a dog behave, or what the problem behaviours are; he would use then his vast knowledge of how a dog would behave/think to recommend a solution.

next, he would explain how modern society/living clashes with having a well behaved dogs. the crux of most dog problems is social ranking. modern society sets this basic instinct in dogs awry at times. in a short chapter, he tries to tell us how we can re-establish ourselves as masters in the eyes of the dog.

the rest of the book lists from A-Z a long list of behaviourial problems and how to deal with it. most problems will be attached a related real life problem he encountered, and the solution he advised.

the book concludes with a 10 page appendix. this is where he lists his techniques to olve problem behaviours, there are only 1 or 2 techniques though.

i suspect 'Think Dog! An Owner's Guide to Canine Psychology' by the same author is a newer version of this book, which was first published in 1991. so you could check that book out.

if you love dogs, understand their mentality, read this book!

Very illuminating, excellent resource.......2003-01-19

Written by an experienced pet behaviour councellor, this book is a must-read for dog owners, especially inexperienced ones. One of the most educational books on dogs I've ever come across. Explains many misconceptions we have about the way dogs interact and behave and assumptions we make that lead to negative results when training our dogs. Every topic discussed is supported by examples from Mr. John Fisher's practice in his work with problem behaviour, or rather what we label as problem behaviour according to our value system. I'll definitely buy Mr. Fisher's other book "Dogwise: The Natural Way to Train Your Dog" as soon as I find it.

Think Like Your Dog!!.......2000-11-28

This book is a must for dog owners! Dealing with a dominant puppy was such a frustration until I read Mr. Fisher's book. My puppy's attitude changed the first day I implemented these training ideas. He is now a joy to be around. All it took was me learning to think like a puppy!

For some reason, I never really got into this book.

It's quite well written ... even amusing at times ... the solutions offered for common problems faced by dog owners are generally quite practical and sensible ... Perhaps, I never really got into this book because the book doesn't offer anything original, or maybe because the author keeps plugging his other books every chance he gets ...

Hmmm ... probably the latter ...

Otherwise ... it's a reasonably good buy ... and deals with most common problems faced by dog owners. This book might would have got three and a half stars, but Amazon doesn't have that ... so ...

Great Book with sense of humor!.......2000-07-28

I loved this book. If you are a beginner, you will find it very interesting. The author answers tens or hundreds of questions one might have regarding dog's behavior. The book goes like, Question - Answer; and those are questions dog owners asked the author. If on the other hand you are an experienced person who read several books already, again you will love this book and find yourself laughing while reading. I found it amusing and humorous, sometimes....rolling on the floor laughing with the way Mr.Ross answered some questions! Highly recommended

Why Does My Dog Drink Out of the Toilet?.......2000-05-17

My husband and I wanted ONE book that provided clear, easy-to-understand, easy-to-follow training instructions, as well as answers to a variety of questions, such as how to introduce a new puppy to an established, older resident dog and cat household, how to kindly, effectively and gently train a young puppy so that it will bond with his human "pack" members, should we still exercise an older dog with arthritis, just to name a few.

Over the past 2 weeks, we've read at least 10 different dog breed ("AKC 100 Top Dog Breeds", "Animal ER"), psychology ("The Wolf Within", "The Dog's Mind") and/or dog training books ("ASPCA Dog Training" by Dr. Bruce Fogle). Although a few books were very good, most did not have all the information we needed contained in one book. This book was by far the most helpful because the format is clear and easy to read, the content is widely varied, informative and frequently hilarious. The thinking behind the training techniques is logically explained. The training methods are very easy to understand and follow. Information on other topics, such as diet, hearing loss, overcoming car sickness, flea control, handicapped dogs, etc., is included.

We used the techniques described in this book to counteract some bad habits our beloved 12-yr-old Lab/German Shorthair Pointer had acquired over the years, and implemented some of the techniques discussed while we observed, temperament-tested and chose a 9-wk-old German Shorthair puppy (out of a 9-puppy litter) to add to our family. Both the breeder and my husband were quite impressed with the IMMEDIATE POSITIVE RESULTS I obtained with the puppies upon first-time use of these methods. I also got great results with our own 12-yr-old dog. (OK, our 12-yr-old SPOILED dog!)

The questions in the book were asked by people all over the country about anything and everything pertaining to dogs of all breeds and ages, covering a multitude of situations. You are sure to find your own questions answered in this book, whatever they may be. The author(s) are experienced dog owners (they have 4 dogs, ranging from 14 years old to 2 years old) & trainers. Their humane, common-sense methods are clearly explained, easily learned and can be used by pet owners of all experience levels.

Initially, I wanted ONE all-purpose book, but because this book was so informative and enjoyable, it looks like I'll have to add "Dog Talk" and "Puppy Preschool" to my library.

I highly recommend "Why Does My Dog Drink Out of the Toilet?" to any current, past or future dog owners. You will enjoy reading about the experiences of the authors and other dog owners, you'll find the information helpful and fun to learn, you'll laugh at some of the dog stories, you'll REALLY enjoy the positive results you get with your dog(s), and your dog will probably breathe a sigh of relief now that you finally understand him.

Complete but no "market" prices.......2003-12-07

The book is complete, that is; you should be able to find whatever you are looking for back as a reference for numbers and years but the values mentioned are extremely high. Just follow on-line auctions for a while and you know that the "real life" values are.
Almost text only. You cannot use this book without a picture book to accompany it.

Helpful Desk Reference.......2001-10-15

Since buying this book, I have referred to it many times. If you are a Barbie collector or trader this book would be very helful. I use it everyday for just that reason. The pictures in the front are great. The large price guide section is as well. Not only vintage & comtemporary Barbie's but many accessories & other items. I was happy to find a section on Gene dolls, which I am just becoming familiar with. Very happy with this book purchase.

Not Just a Price Guide.......2001-03-05

Sure, there are prices for just about every single Barbie item every made, but it's much more. This book is very helpful in looking up what item goes with what outfit, the year it was made and the stock number/name. The photos are very helpful to clearly identify which doll you are looking at. I especially like the price guide for the individual vintage accessory pieces. This year Gene and other fashion dolls were added too. Knowledge is power. You can't know too much about your hobbie/collection.

Samuel ben Hofni Gaon was head of the Yeshiva of Sura in Baghdad during the cultural renaissance which characterized the Buyid period. His writings reflect the impact of Arabic literature on Jewish intellectuals at this time. The first part of this volume presents the known details of his life and extensive writings and describes the dynamics of contemporary, tenth-century Jewish culture: the decline and temporary restoration of the yeshivot and the intellectual activity outside of them.
