1 out of 5 stars The islands are great...this book is not........2007-05-25

The author must have been sucking lemons while he wrote this book. His attitude toward the Philippines and the things in it is quite poor, and he makes serious mistakes.
Errors in fares & costs are understandable due to the age of the book, but dangerous to the traveler who relies upon them. He appears to confuse sites within Manila (specifically, the Divisoria Marketplace with the Quiapo marketplace). He is quick to tell you where you can get a burger and fries in each town, but seems uninterested in Philippine cuisine, which can be truly delicious.
The author advises shopping for toy Jeepneys, sarongs and "rice gods" as the only good souveniers of the Phils. The only place I found these was in commercial souvenier stores in Manila, or in the airport. I find that many localities have characteristic woven goods (coconut fiber in the Bicol region, for example) that are practical and easy to travel with; freshwater pearls are also easy to find.
The author's attitude toward most country towns seems to be that there is "nothing to detain you" there. Indeed, if you make the slightest effort to get to know the people and the regional specialties, you may prove him quite wrong. There may not be a shopping mall or a first-run movie theater, but then, is that what you really went there for?
In sum, the Philippines is a wonderful place (I just returned froma 2-week trip). Go and have a great time, but avoid this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Never been?.......2007-04-27

I am planning my first trip to the Philippines this September. Actually this will be my first trip out of the US and i am looking for a good guide to help me gather information. I must say i will buy more than one guide but this one is very good. Loaded with more information that i thought i would ever need. This book is an excellent jumping off point if you know nothing about the Philippines. A good buy, but i would recommend getting more than just one guide.

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT PURCHASE.......2007-03-14

Hi we have just returned from the philippines. We used the guide to determine which areas to visit, the descriptions and ambience of the places mentioned in the book fit extreemly well with the places we visited. Would def. Reccommend.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting read .......2007-01-03

I purchased this book in preparation for my first trip to the Philippines. I found the book very resourceful and full of interesting tid-bits. I'm leaving this month, so I will not know how practical the book is until then. However, everyone has picked it up off my coffee table and enjoys looking through it. Compared to other travel books that I have looked at, this one has been the most informative and organized.

            Book Description

When the ancient sites of Herculaneum and Pompeii were excavated in the eighteenth century, the objects found there renewed artistic interest in classicism. Neoclassical style and imagery permeated paintings, sculpture, furniture, and decorative arts of the period, and a central element of design in all these art forms was the vase.

This beautiful book is the first to focus on the vase as an artistic and ornamental form in a variety of media. It presents and discusses about one hundred hidden treasures from The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s reserve collection—not only vases but also wine and water urns, knife boxes, ink wells, perfume burners, fabrics, carved paneling, marquetry furniture, silver, works on paper, and paintings—all using the vase motif. Vase imagery ranged from austere to fantastic to romantic, say the authors of this book, and the vase became a new paradigm of artistic achievement and a central symbol of European Neoclassicism.

The average reptile owner has two or three reptile pets, not necessarily of the same species, and needs one book that will answer all their questions. What can you expect from a reptile as a pet? How do you set up a habitat for a desert snake or a rain forest frog? What should you feed these most finicky eaters? There are also tips on avoiding salmonella, advice about handling your pet and a section on what to do if you are bitten. The most comprehensive information on every aspect of the subject is presented in an easily-accessible, quick, fun format.

            2 out of 5 stars incorrect information.......2006-10-15

The author doesn't even know the difference between reptiles and amphibians. She states that herps that live in water are amphibians, which would make a turtle an amphibian. (Amphibians do usually live in water, but this characteristic is not what defines the difference between a reptile and emphibian.) Even though turtles are reptiles, and therefore you would think that they would be included in this book, they are not. For turtle info, she directs you to her turtle book. Most of the rest of the information in adequate, but there are much better books out there. Don't waste your money on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Before you get a reptile/amphibian, you MUST read this book.......2001-01-17

If you're considering purchasing a reptile or amphibian pet, get this book first, and read it. The author instructs both on reptile and amphibian husbandry basics, as well as provides a LOT of good information which will help you decide if a herp pet is right for you. The species specific sections are more of an overview and mostly useful for helping the reader decide what kind of reptile/amphibian pet is right for them; a book specific to the chosen species (such as the VMS Herpetological Libray Series) should be chosen to complement this, as the care information is too brief to be an exclusive source.

There should be more spell-it-out for the beginner books like this on the subject. Turtles are very difficult to care for properly and this book is full of truths on the matter. Concise and thorough - a necessity for the rookie or pro turtle keeper.

4 out of 5 stars It is a useful source of info for tort lovers........1999-04-01

Easy to read and lots of practical information based on author's vast experiences. As a beginner, I truly found it resourceful and useful. If you love to read a how-to book, it is the one you're looking for. But if you love fancy photos, 4-color pictures for reference purpose, etc. it's not what you need. Liz, it'd be very much better and will be perfect if you could possibly include more 4-color pictures of famous tortoises and turtles.

5 out of 5 stars this is a great book!.......1998-11-30

I think this book is a top notch one and everyone wanting to know more on turtles should read if not buy this book!

This book is long overdue documentation on automatic wristwatches from countries other than Switzerland. These watches were always considered superior micro-mechanical products and posed a challenge to technicians. It was only a question of time, before the collectors' interest in these watches expanded from Swiss watches to those of other origins. A total of 123 watches are illustrated in three different views and are described in detail.

You've spent thousands of dollars and countless hours transforming your house into a minimalist haven. You won't want to junk it up with tacky houseplants. Still, you think it could use some living greenery, if only for its ionizing properties. Turn to Hip Houseplants, and in the first chapter you'll find ideas for plants that contribute to a minimalist décor: orchids of course, a tuft of isolepis grass in a simple tin container, partridge-breasted aloe. Or maybe your apartment is decorated in retro '70s style--bright plastic dining chairs, starburst wall clock, and the like--but something's missing: the spider plants and the kalanchoe. Florist-to-the-stars Orlando Hamilton's book emphasizes matching plants and containers with their surroundings: What plants look good and thrive in steamy bathrooms? Where should you place a spreading plant, or one with a bold architectural structure? How can you use artificial illumination to spotlight your prized calla lily? In short sections, Hamilton discusses texture, color, leaf shape, pattern, and scent. The listing of 86 hip houseplants and their characteristics, ideal environment (unfortunately, none of these is a shade plant), and maintenance requirements could be used as a shopping list on your next trip to the garden center. --Liana Fredley

            Book Description

Discover natural ways to create a stylish home with the ultimate living accessory for interiors. In Hip Houseplants, Orlando Hamilton transforms the Cinderella reputation of indoor plants, demonstrating how their chic shapes and living color can complement every stylish interior. The Ultimate Design Accessory: Discover serenely scented plants for bedrooms, scene-stealers for grand entrance halls, and even "desktop ionizers" for home offices. Orlando shows how there is an auspicious plant for every part of the home, including steamy bathrooms and tiny kitchens. He also explains how to match plants to every type of decor. In vivid and inspiring photographs, he presents, for example, elegant palms as an integral part of a sumptuous Moroccan room, and porcelain-delicate orchids as a sublime touch in an Asian Fusion-style setting. Stylish Containers Lit to Perfection: The right container provides the perfect link between a plant and its surroundings. Wooden containers, lacquered bowls, and even kitchen colanders are pressed into service with stunning results. Orlando shows how to use pebbles, stones, and moss as trims and how to highlight plants with dramatic halogen and fiber-optic lighting. With advice on plant care and a useful resource section, Hip Houseplants has everything you need to enhance your interiors with the ultimate in stylish greenery.

            5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2004-06-23

This will be the 8th time I have started to write this review today! I can't quite sum up into words how much I am enjoying this book! I love plants-- unfortunately; I know nothing about caring for them and keeping them healthy. I bought this book because I recently moved into a new town home and thought I would really love to incorporate some plants into all the new space our new home has to offer, but in a tasteful way. The ideas in this book are spectacular!! The book opens with several gorgeous photographs. The way the chapters are organized is wonderful! There is a chapter for different theme rooms (i.e.: Bold and Contemporary, Asian Fusion Style, Modern Mediterranean), a chapter for color and scent (what plants give off a full fragrant scent and what gives off light fresh scents, full page layouts of different plants of the same color), a chapter for shape and texture, a chapter for different rooms in the house (plants best suited for bathrooms, bedrooms, etc.),a chapter for choosing pots and containers, a chapter for lighting, a chapter for plant care, a plant maintenance guide to use for quick reference, an address and directory listing to some of the products listed in the book and lastly, an index for all the plants listed in the book. I plan on giving several of these to friends as gifts this year! The best thing about this book is that it isn't one of those books that you can admire the products used and never replicate them due to hard to find materials. The pots are all fairly easy to find (lots of them look like they are from Ikea, which you can do a telephone order for, some are terracotta pots that were spray painted silver and they look like metal! and some are big ceramic pots that you can often pick up at flea markets, yard sales or even stores like garden ridge or home depot). This is a great book for anyone looking to incorporate plants into their home!

5 out of 5 stars Plants as design elements: Excellent beginner book........2001-10-28

Some people are into 'hip.' Some people are not. Don't let this title throw you: This book is not your pass-card to the ranks of the coolest of the Cool. It's about plants. It's also about pots and light and color and space.

Orlando Hamilton has put together a masterful beginner's guide to thinking about plants as design elements. Starting with the basics, he quickly reviews a variety of atmospheres, from Modern Chic to Retro to African Revival to Beach Comber, adroitly leading you into basic design concepts, then moving on to an element by element examination of how tone is set. Each style gets one page of commentary, one full page picture, and 3 inset sample shots to give a more in depth sense of the style. The result is a brisk introduction to the art that adroitly leads the reader into thinking about their own environment and the elements that define it.

Moving into specific components, Orlando manages to zoom in on particulars, coherently covering a range of possibilities, without letting you lose sight of the larger picture. He talks about individual spaces (bathrooms, stairs, diningrooms, hallways), how they relate to the whole, & reels off possibilities, complete with lavish pictures to illustrate his ideas, and captions to explain how the particulars come together. He talks about forms, textures, sizes, and colors, each one addressed separately, and how they contribute to a room's overall presentation. He talks about pots, he talks about stands, he talks about lighting, he talks about materials... He talks about _details_, and all those little things that you might not think of as important until you see for yourself the stunning impact something as simple as a pot can contribute to the whole.

I think the genius of this book is the brevity with which it is able to communicate ideas. The interplay between text, photograph, caption and title is such that the author is able to convey these ideas without bogging you down with text (unlike certain reviewers). The pictures are appropriately gorgeous, the text is brisk but friendly, the captions are tremendously useful in elaborating his points, and the section titles cut right to the heart of the matter. And yet he leaves plenty of room for you to disagree or improvise...he even has a small section on how to paint pots!

In other words, this isn't a step-by-step primer, it's an introduction to concepts. Concepts that, having been grasped, will help you shape your own creative atmosphere.

                Book Description

Long before any dance performance is presented, an artistic collaboration takes place in the studio between dance teachers, musicians, and dancers. This book, a companion to the author's Music for the Dance: Reflections on a Collaborative Art, explores that collaboration, considering every level of training from creative movement for the very young to the daily workouts and rehearsals of professional ballet and modern concert dance companies. Designed to be easily accessible to those without musical literacy or an extensive knowledge of dance technique, the volume is appropriate both for dance teachers, musicians, and students, as well as for the parents and theater-goers who want to know more about what goes on "behind the scenes." This book also encompasses styles of jazz dance and some ethnic forms in the African tradition. Based on Katherine Teck's experience as a studio musician and on her interviews with outstanding dance teachers and musicians, the book addresses a wide variety of musical concerns. For dance teachers such topics as finding and training an accompanist, communicating musical needs, working with a live musician in class, and collaborating for original choreography are covered. Subjects of interest to musicians include the existing repertoire for dance, how to analyze movement patterns, techniques of improvisation, how to find formal training, and career possibilities in dance. Finally, for the dancers themselves, the work provides an introduction to ways in which music and movement can relate. Of special interest to dance historians will be the author's interviews with leading artists in the fields of both ballet and modern dance. An appendix provides listings of further resources, as well as a checklist of important reminders for musicians and teachers. This work will be a valuable resource for courses in dance technique, musical collaboration, and dance history, as well as an important addition to both public and college libraries.

                            5 out of 5 stars a fantastic read.......2001-03-14

this is an excellent book - one of the best I have come across. I have usually found songwriting books dense and unreadable - but this explains the process clearly with good references and clear explanations. A must for any budding songwriters out there.

                            4 out of 5 stars excellent resource.......2000-04-04

I highly recommend this tool. Less weighty than many similar texts, Learn Songwriting takes you over the basics, and shows you how to proof your music before you take it to the market. A must for the novice songwriter, and anyone who is looking to branch out into a new field of creative writing. Also recommend Sheila Davis' series.
