Book Description
This publication contains the proceedings of "Relaxin 2000: The Third International Conference on the Hormone Relaxin & Related Peptides", held on October 22-27, 2000, at the Cable Beach Resort, Broome, Australia. Delegates from academia and industry who attended this meeting, the latest in an irregular series, participated in an exciting scientific program that covered all aspects of current relaxin research, the growth of which in recent years has been stellar. Seminal topics presented at the conference and in this book include: clinical roles for relaxin, elucidation of novel sites of action of the hormone, relaxin-induced signal transduction, identification of non-pregnant roles of the hormone, and of novel relaxin-related peptides (particularly insl 3 and 5) and their possible synergistic actions with relaxin. Audience: This book will be of considerable interest to both endocrinologists and protein researchers, including those engaged in studies in members of the insulin super-family.

Customer Reviews:
travel guide works.......2007-01-11
i live in albania as a foreigner employed by the UN. we have found this guide to be mostly accurate. many guides on albania miss things or are just plain wrong. this is one of the better ones--take it fromo a resident who has bought many bad travel guides about this little explored country.
The first was better.......2006-11-06
The second edition isnt fully rewritten, there are a lot of things which changed thence, but arent mentioned. ( Banka e Kursimeve since 2005 is Raiffeisen bank )
The style of the second one is for the more stupid travelleres: there is more hotel and restaurant addresses, less history, more advices how to travel by bike and how to tramping, but less about the feeling of the country. And there are a lot of boxes about unimportant english people, who once spent in this country some time, and nothing about the people, who have made more about Albania...
The Only Practical Guide to Albania!.......2006-09-04
If you want to travel around Albania and do more than just hit the few most visited highlights, this is no doubt the book to take.
It is the only English-language guide devoted to Albania alone, and it offers a good coverage of the places and things to see, fairly up to date details of transport and accomodation options, decent maps of both regions and individual towns or cities, as well as well-written background information on culture and history. All the stuff you would expect from good practical guidebooks like the better-known Lonely Planet series (whose coverage of Albania is dismal!).
It is also fairly balanced in covering both budget and upmarket places to stay, something other books often fail at.
So why only 4 stars?
Well, some of the maps would need to be more accurate - they sometimes showed places on the wrong street or corner. Also, in a few cases, practical details were missing, with the existence of accomodation being mentioned, but not the usual details on how much it cost. Same goes for transport info.
Finally, and most mystifyingly, the author has chosen to use non-standard place names ("definite", conjugated forms) even though she herself admits this form is not what you will see in Albania on maps, destination signs of buses or road-signs!
However these shortcomings are well outweighed by all the useful info in the book. If you are planning to tour this little-visited country independently, don't leave home without a copy!

Anyone for Albania?.......2006-02-25
I always purchase a guidebook when I move to a new country and finding one on Albania was not easy so I first of all appreciated that Bradt had published a guide book to this not-so-traveled-to-country. The book is good for basic site information but not as comprehensive as some other brands. You won't find another one though so in this case, I am most pleased.
Indispensable guidebook for Albania.......2005-03-05
Gloyer's book inspired my trip to Albania, and it was useful every step of the way.
She offers tips on how to get through the airport without hassles, which hotels are worth booking, and what to see in just about every part of Albania a tourist might go to. Her writing style is well beyond the norm for travel guides, without a hint of the Weltschmerz that afflicts so many travel writers. She has a sly sense of humor, and will even boldly tell you to avoid a hotel run by the local mafia. Also, there aren't many travel guides that include tips on how to help alleviate poverty and suffering in the country being visited, but Ms Gloyer thoughtfully includes such information. She obviously loves the country and is very fond of its people, and it's quite a gift to Albania to have such an honest and worthwhile travel guide available in English.
Book Description
Written by an insider and Albania enthusiast, the Bradt guide to Albania takes a fresh look at how and where to explore the heritage of this hidden corner of eastern Europe. The guide includes cycling routes and hikers’ trails to help independent travelers make the most of the Mediterranean countryside and there are up-to-date details on outdoor activities, wildlife and history. Albania’s archaeological treasures are well covered, including the ancient city of Butrint and hilltop site of Byllis.

Book Description
BACK IN PRINT WITH 37 ADDITIONAL IMAGES NOW IN COLOR This mammoth repository of images and essays redefines mid-century modernism. A stunning showcase. Publishers Weekly Comprehensive, well-written, engaging.ARTnews
Design 1935-1965: What Modern Was presents a definitive and distinct perspective on the decorative arts of the mid-20th centurya period that has only grown in popularity since the book was first published in 1991. Now back in print with 37 new full-color plates of formerly black-and-white images, it is certain to be reaffirmed as a classic of design literature.
The encyclopedic, stunningly illustrated volume spotlights seminal objects from the period's most significant innovators, including the Eames's iconic chairs; Noguchi's sculptural lamps; Sottsass's early, rebellious furniture; as well as jewelry, ceramics, and textiles by a range of contemporary masters. Renowned historian Paul Johnson's thought-provoking essay provides a sociopolitical context for the works, and noted experts in various design fields offer a wealth of information.
Customer Reviews:
Modern in the Past Tense.......2004-02-13
A comprehensive survey of the decorative arts from 1935 through 1965 but unfortunately I was disappointed by the editorial arrangement of this book. It is basically encyclopaedic in nature but the editors decided to split it into the following chapters, Streamline Modern, Biomorphic modern, Modern historicism, Postwar modernism, Modern pattern and ornament, Expressionist modern and finally Beyond Modern. Many of the artists mentioned, of course, easily drop into one or more of these periods. For example, Finnish designer Timo Sarpaneva's work is featured three times, vases from 1950 and 1953 and a 1955 glass decanter, each is pictured and described in detail with additional related information and at the back of the book is his biography. I really feel it would have been more appropriate to have each artist's work and bio in one place and the essays, defining the various styles, together at the front of the book.
I was impressed by the range of the artists and designers covered in this survey, not just the fine arts of Miro and Dali but also the graphics of Herbert Matter and Milton Glaser and even the creative contributions of companies like Herman Miller and Polaroid. The authors have rightly considered all aspects of mid-century creativity.
The scope of the book is North American and Europe but if you want to concentrate on America have a look at the two volume, 'The American Century: Art and Culture' (1900-1950 ISBN 0393047237 and 1950-2000 ISBN 0393048152) by Barbara Haskell and Lisa Phillips. I found these two books very comprehensive in their coverage and also visually quite stunning to look at with their hundreds of illustrations.

Book Description
There has never been a truly authoritative, practical and comprehensive guide to bits and bit combinations available to the rider and horse-owner, a vacancy which has been highlighted by the recent renewed interest in a more thoughtful approach to bitting and its effect on the horse. With regular reports in the equestrian media of horses transformed by the change of a bit, and how a particular top name in the sport has successfully converted a horse to a new type, the equestrian world will welcome this thorough work by respected expert Elwyn Hartley Edwards.
The author give details of every known bit in the world, with photographs and working diagrams to show how each group works. Covering everything from the simple snaffle to the Western bosal, it is totally international in content and approach. Elwyn provides a fascinating insight into the history of the bit and explores the latest developments in design and manufacture, with details of subsidiary tackle and bitting for different sports and activities.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent reference material!.......2007-07-31
FINALLY a complete look at horse bits and practices from the beginning of horsemanship through today. A necessary book for every serious horse person's library - this is one we will come back to again and again I'm sure. Includes excellent photos and diagrams of the different bits and hackamores et al with explanations of how and WHY each piece works. While the author does have some disapproving tones at times, so what? It's his book and thus his voice after all. As long as the information is accurate and clearly given that is all the matters.
great book.......2007-05-08
This is an awesome book for anyone who wants to learn more about bits. The pictures are great, and the book includes some history as well. It's also very easy to read, especially for the type of book it is.
"For the Novice and the Experienced Rider".......2006-09-03
....since getting back into riding the English discipline after a break that lasted quite a few years, I was surprised when I discovered just how much technical information had slipped my mind. Since the art of bitting was at the top of my list for my about-to-be new horse, I eagerly awaited its arrival and was not disappointed. The book opens with a chapter about the evolution of the bit, then concisely describes the many bits, the variations thereof, how they feel to the horse and how to determine the best choice for your equine companion. This information far exceeded the expectations I had when I first submitted my order. Bits & Bitting helped to re-acquaint me with this very important piece of tack! The pages speak to the novice in laymans terms and also to the experienced rider that may be looking to change his or her horse's bit.
A must read for aspiring horse professionals........2006-07-24
I bought this book with the hopes in mind to learn about the different types of bits. I didn't just want to know what they were called, but also what purpose they served. I felt that this book was a good start to my understanding bitting. I found the author, Elwyn Hartley Edwards, to be absoutely entertaining with his side comments; he stated his opinions, but without taking away from the facts, which is something one must admire with his British humor.
Thorough Study of the Subject.......2006-03-15
This is a very thorough study of bits and their application. It covers the history of the bit and theory behind its use. Rein effects are clearly and concisely explained (easier to demonstrate than to write about) and the horse's anatomy regarding the cause and effect of bit/bridle pressure is illustrated brilliantly to help the rider understand the effect of proper cues on the entire horse.
The book emphasizes proper application of all riding cues, specifically how the bit reinforces information already relayed to the horse through the seat and legs.
The illustrations are very well done and complement the book nicely.
This book could benefit the beginner, but it is so thorough that it really fits into the intermediate skill level. The depth of information could easily overwhelm a beginning rider who is still struggling with basic skills.
My assessment of the author's writing is that it is witty and at points humorous, in the dry manner of which the British are famous. I never felt the author was pompous or "angry sounding." It seemed to me the author is a true expert in this field and was laying out the information including his "expert opinion." I appreciated his opinions and felt the book would not have been nearly as informative without them.
I almost did not buy this book based on the previous reviewer's comments. I'm glad that I bought it and once I started reading it, I found it flowed smoothly from cover to cover. My knowledge and skills are the better for it.

I wonder how the author decides on an items worth. Could it be how many of that particular item he owns, or is looking to purchase? Otherwise somewhat informative.

Good Information.......2007-01-20
It was a very informative book! Since it was for a present I cannot really say much except that the person I gave it to is very happy with it, and find it very informative.

Nice for Greenhouse Growers.......2001-01-01
"Orchids are Easy" is a helpful book for someone planning a greenhouse. The first part of the book goes into detail about the planning that goes into building a greenhouse--including location, building materials, necessary equipment, watering and climate control.
Brief chapters cover the culture of orchids, propogation, pests and diseases. The final section is the "A-Z of Orchid Species". This area has nice closeups of each featured plant, but is pretty limited in scope. You won't find anything about Cattleyas, Phalaenopsis or Cymbidiums here.
If you are looking for information on Oncidiums, Odontoglossums and some Dendrobiums you find solid information and nice photography.
Book Description
All in color! Orchids can be found in virtually all regions of the world, and have attracted people for many years with the exquisite colors and beautiful shapes of their flowers. But how can you grow these extraordinary plants? There's advice on cultivating orchids in the home (on a windowsill, on a trolley, and in a window greenhouse) and in the greenhouse (heating, ventilation, temperature control, storage and maintenance, and more). Next comes potting and composts, light, water and humidity, feeding, propagation, germinating seeds, and pests, diseases, and other ailments. From fertilizers and containers to pruning, watering, and weeding, the essential information you need to know is here. The last section describes 30 orchid genera, including their history, physiology, and horticulture requirements. Rather than simply admire the beauty of orchids, why not cultivate some of your own! Trim size: 8 1/4 x 10 1/2.

True Beginners & Beginners w/ High Aspirations.......2003-04-09
As a windowsill orchid hobbyist who already owns a few beginner's books, I found this one to be beautifully designed with gorgeous photos and photographic step-by-step directions on full repotting (including root trimming), dropping on an orchid (moving a healthy but overgrown plant to a larger pot w/o touching root system), orchids in baskets, and mounting orchids on bark. The section on pests/disease is also very clearly articulated with large photographic examples.
The book does, however, go into quite a bit of detail about different types of orchid pollination, propagation, as well as greenhouse construction. While these topics might be interesting for the first-time grower, I'm a little unsure as to whether most "newbies" starting out with a handful of plants have THAT kind of space, time, or money to devote to the hobby, at least at first. I was also hoping for a bit more info on miniature orchids. Then again, coming from a f/t grad student who has to relocate herself and her orchids every 6-10 months, you may want to take that with a grain of salt! Buy this book? Yes! But you may later want something else that suits your specific growing conditions.
Gardener's Guide To Growing Orchids.......2001-05-17
I have 5 or 6 books on basic orchid care and this supasses all of them in depth of content. It is simple to understand and the pictures are breathtaking. More importantly, they examine every part of orchid care, not just the basic air, light, water. There are detailed instructions on how to hybridize your own orchids, which I have only seen before in costly advanced books. I feel this book is an excellent resource for the beginner who has an orchid or two and wishes to know more. It's a handy reference for "just the basics" as well.
A must for your orchid "library".......2000-07-14
This book has some of the best pictures of orchid blooms I have ever seen - like looking at the real plant! The book goes beyond the usual with color pictures of the structure of the different types of orchids and a wealth of informational "tidbits" surrounding the beautiful color pictures. The oversized book allows for larger type that makes reading it a pleasure. A wonderful resource book to add to your "orchid" library.

Rose Cross over the Baltic.......2003-10-16
Publisher's info:
This volume is a study of Rosicrucianism in the early period of the seventeenth century with emphasis both on the local reception of the Rosicrucian pamphlets in the Baltic area and on the original group of Rosicrucian authors in Tübingen.
In the first part of the book the Runic theosophy of the Swedish Rosicrucian Johannes Bureus is studied in its millenarian context, beginning with his Adulruna Rediviva of 1616. The Paracelsian prophecy of the Lion of the North is also shown to be a Rosicrucian theme.
The general millenarian background to the Rosicrucian publications is then explored and implications are drawn from the Rosicrucian doctrine of the great conjunctions, from the emergence of new stars, and from their comet research.
Readership: All those interested in intellectual history, seventeenth-century studies, and the history of western esotericism.
