Study of the cultural-political strength and ecological tragedy of the Sami from Russia's Kola Peninsula. .

    3 out of 5 stars Many questions.......2002-02-22

This book contains a collection of articles, journal entries and essays about a mapping project in the Sami lands of the Kola peninsula. As I read the book flaps and prefaces, I kept wondering, "What is this book about?". And then I kept wondering as I got lost in the rhetoric of the first chapter. And I said, "Well, surely the topic of the book and the project that it seems to be about will become clear soon." As I read the remaining chapters, I was able to put the pieces together. It seems that the book is one product of a Canadian-Sami joint research project to map Sami resources that was completed in about 1998. One of the main intentions of the project seems to be to provide the Sami with maps that they could use to bolster their claims for land usage rights in Russia.

This book is rather a mixed bag of goodies. The main message is not very clearly stated, yet, the information contained in various parts of the book is extremely valuable, and the stories are quite interesting and illuminating. Despite the slimness of the volume, the essays and articles still manage to contain a good deal of historical and ethnographical information about the Sami, as well as documentation about who worked on this particular project and how. The journal entries provide a rare view into living conditions in small villages of Northern Russia in the mid-90s, just after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The book is filled with photographs of modern Sami landscapes, juxtaposed with color reproductions of 18th century prints by Leems. The maps, which were the reason for the project, are included in an envelope in the back, and are the main treasure of the book.

          Book Description

Showcasing selected works from The Museum of Modern Art's superlative architecture and design collection, Objects of Design features a wide variety of industrial and domestic artifacts by great designers of the modern period, from early masters such as Hector Guimard, Frank Lloyd Wright and Josef Hoffmann to contemporary practitioners including Droog Design, Ettore Sottsas, Gaetano Pesce, Hella Jongerius and others. Some of the objects represent turn-of-the-century designs of the Vienna Secession, Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movement; others are Bauhaus and de Stijl explorations; still others show Charles and Ray Eames and other American designers of the second half of the 20th century; representations of the Italian design revolutions; and contemporary manifestations of familiar genres using radical new materials and techniques of manufacture. The book's 360 color plates not only reveal the range of aesthetic viewpoints in design since the late 19th century but together trace the historical development of the Museum's celebrated design collection. In the introductory essay, Paola Antonelli, Curator, Department of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art, explores the history of modern design as well as the story of the museum's collection and its influence on the history of modern and contemporary design itself.

MoMA canonized modern design as it did 20th-century art, and this anthology of pictures and expert texts highlights a collection of 3,708 objects that range in size from microchips to a helicopter. About a tenth of those are illustrated in nine thematic sections. Many are icons, but there are a few surprises, especially among recent acquisitions, where the inventive use of materials supplants functional beauty. Paola Antonelli, MoMA Curator of Architecture and Design, describes the collection as presenting a history of ideas and realizing a part of Alfred Barr's dream of a unity of the arts. She explains how the old selection criteria of truth and beauty have changed while retaining some of their old authority. It's comforting to know that relativism does not yet extend to firearms, making MoMA's collection a gun-free zone. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)

            Book Description

An incisive exploration of the still life genre as artists have rediscovered and reshaped it in the 20th century, Objects of Desire proves that despite the century's hostility toward older aesthetic conventions, avant-garde artists of many schools have made of the still life a vital opportunity for invention. From Matisse, Picasso, and Braque to the Dadaists, Surrealists, and Pop artists and finally to contemporary creators like Cindy Sherman and Charles Ray, the still life has hardly led a stolid, stable, or staunch existence. Originally a subject reserved for painting, the genre has progressively invaded the arena of sculpture, its themes reinvented in the provocative assemblages called "readymades," its forms recast continuously into the present. Published to accompany a major 1997 exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, Objects of Desire traces a radical rethinking of the genre in terms of subject matter and formal invention.

1 out of 5 stars Dilbert in the Artplace.......2006-11-02

While doing research for an essay on the "Search for Postmodernism in a Modernist World," I purchased Ms Rowell's book, curiously titled Objects of Desire. At the very least, it was a questionable investment. However, it is indicative of what is wrong with the world of modern art [or even postmodern art] where pretentious jargon takes the place of actual description, reason or discussion as an excuse for art works that in the end are just boring.

At the time of the book's publication, Ms Rowell was allegedly a curator at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Her explanation of Postmodernism gets at the heart of the matter in such a way that I am compelled to quote her at length, in particular her explanation regarding the bridge between pastiche and schizophrenia:

"The possibility of pastiche -- its neutrality and blankness - presupposes that individualism is dead. The copy is impersonal; the model is either indifferent, forgotten, or never existed. High modernism, however, was "predicated on the invention of a personal private style... This means that the modernist aesthetic is in some way a unique personality and individuality, which can be expected to generate its own unique vision of the world, and to forge its own unique, unmistakable style." Yet today, scientists, social scientists, and cultural critics are "exploring the notion that that [sic] kind of individualism and personal identity is a thing of the past; that the old individual or individualist subject is `dead'; and that one might even describe the concept of the unique individual and the theoretical basis of individualism as ideological." Thus the old models of modernism are no longer viable. As we know, schizophrenia is defined as a basic breakdown of relationships - because objects in a perceptual field, for example and between words and their meaning or content, or between words and each other as a continuous fabric of meaning in a linguistic system. As a result, the schizophrenic has no concept of time as linear, interconnected, and sequential, and none either of personal identity as a selection and interrelation of certain specific human potentials at the expense of others. Conversely, because the schizophrenic does not (indeed cannot) search for meaning behind the object, behind the word, or within the unhierarchical unfolding of the field of experience, he or she has an experience of the present and of its objects that is "overwhelmingly vital and `material'... ever more material - or better still, literal - ever more vivid in sensory ways." ... Pashtiching the objects of desire of our traditional landscape, they set a film of meaning (or nonmeaning) between themselves and ourselves. In their deliberate displacement and disconnection from familiar circuits of meaning - whether aesthetic or real - these surrogates or simulacra embody another register of experience, that of the signs and systems of the postmodern world." [Rowell, 194-195]

Is there anything more that can be added after such an erudite analysis? Perhaps there is. However, the analysis does cause one to ask a number of questions. Did anyone buy this book for anything other than the pictures? How does one get a job as a curator in a major museum? And more to the point, was there an editor, or was the editor on vacation when page after page of turgid, incoherent and virtually incomprehensible pseudo-intellectualism made its way to print? Or perhaps this presentation is meant to be a literary representation of Postmodernism, most likely a parody of postmodern Deconstructionist style. One can only hope that this is satire - the world of Dilbert in the "artplace." Dramatic readings of her text have provided considerable entertainment for my friends and family, who found it quite amusing.

                          Book Description

Based on an analysis of how horses naturally behave, this practical and helpful handbook addresses common problems that owners have with their horses and how to overcome them. Horse owners learn to use a horse's natural instincts as a sociable herd animal to curb such behaviors as fidgeting during grooming, pushing their owners up against a wall, and kicking their stable walls. Written in an accessible, easy-to-reference A–Z format, each behavior problem is addressed both in terms of what causes the behavior and what can be done to solve it before it becomes habitual and a danger to the horse and its rider.

                              Book Description

Gardening is now the favorite outdoor leisure activity in America. Homeowners realize the health benefits available from gardening and the potential increase in their home's property value.

Regional gardening titles offer the most useful advice because they provide credible information on the plants that perform best in specific states. Gardeners want information they can trust and use successfully in their own gardens.

The Mid Atlantic Gardeners Guide is devoted to offering the top landscape plants for four key areas of the Mid Atlantic region: Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and Washington D.C.

5 out of 5 stars Great for beginners in our area.......2005-02-02

We recently bought our first free standing home on 1/4 acre in the Maryland suburbs of Washington. My original plan was to 'garden every inch', but I soon realized that was not a 'plan'. After going through several volumes and magazines in the library, I came across this book.

Its beauty lies in the fact that it helps the begginer to PLAN. The gorgeous pictures helped me decide which plants I like visually; the icons let me know immediately which plants do well in shade, sun or both; which are drought tolerant, which attract bees, which are scented, which are native; the list seemed endless. I also like the fact that the book includes water plants, trees, grasses and shrubs with the usual fare because we are fortunate enough to have dogwoods in our yards and now I know how to take care of them.

The reference guide includes contact information for area garden centers, including one about 15 minutes from where we live.

I hope readers can find a guide like this specific to the areas in which they live.

The best recommendation of all: after 3 renewals from the library, I finally decided to BUY the book - I'm definitely going to use it this spring and always.

1 out of 5 stars Scant information, plentiful redundancy.......2004-09-28

Aside from providing a list and pictures of popular local plants, this book provides little useful information about individual species and their cultivation. Much of each one-page species description is pure boilerplate providing generic information on planting that is repeated over and over again throughout the book, rather than being stated once in a section on cultivation. Truly disappointing.

                              4 out of 5 stars pretty good.......2003-04-03

I like that this book is specifically about the area in which I live. There's lots of good info here. I wish there had been more flowers listed, though. I wanted to find a smorgasbord of pretty, interesting and different flowers from which to choose. (I'm not looking to plant trees, so I just skipped over that section.) I think this book is a pretty good resource for neophyte or relatively new gardeners in the Mid-Atlantic.

Telling a story from one point of view is so much easier than from two. Or five. Or, goddess forbid, 30. But there are some events and people that demand many points of view. Dancer/choreographer Martha Graham was utterly different to different people in different circumstances and at different times in her sweeping career. In Robert Tracy's oral history, Goddess: Martha Graham's Dancers Remember, Graham's passion and creativity are recalled by 30 of her dancers from the 1920s to the 1990s, including many who became international stars: Merce Cunningham, Paul Taylor, Rudolf Nureyev, Anna Sokolow, and more. This Rashomon-style approach allows her many contradictions to stand out vividly, but all the respondents seek to analyze the spark that was the source of her creativity.

"Mr. Tracy knows what to ask Graham veterans, and he gets answers that will interest specialists and non-specialists alike. The range of emotions, of wit, of sensibility is especially dazzling: the inner life of a great dance era is concentrated in these people and is evoked on every page." -Arlene Croce Illustrated with 65 photographs

If you know, who Martha Graham was, then it's time to find out what people who worked with her really think about her work, and their experience for their life. Names such as ,Merce Cunningham, Paul Taylor, Pearl Lang, and more, are in the book, and they are saying what they think . Robert Tracy, the Author, meet all of them, and through his writing, it's your turn to meet them, have a good reading...
