5 out of 5 stars Visiting Boston, buy a travel guide.......2004-11-21

I have been to Boston twice within the past year. I absolutely love the city and am seriously considering a move their one day. I bought this travel guide before my second trip. (I wish I had read it before the first trip) The guide helped a lot, but it seems to be biased in favor of its advertising. I did, however, learn a lot more about the city after reading it. The book is definitely worth the money, but my suggestion is that if you are going to spend $2000 on a vacation, buy two or three different travel guides and compare notes. I would also suggest "TimeOut Boston" for a more edgy view of the city.

    4 out of 5 stars A fine book.......2002-04-11

This is my first Frommer's guide book. The map is great and better than Fodor's. The accomodation section is definitely the best part of the whole book. Arthur Frommer is really a penny pincher. For twenty something travelers who want to go the night spots will have to ask around or go with Lonely Planet. This book is a 5 star for the budget consicious older folks and anybody traveling with families.

      Book Description

The whimsical toucans, chickens, owl, and penguin from Write Around the World return, bumbling and tumbling around the world and through time, discovering where numbers came from. From the first counting machine (fingers), pebble markers (or calculus in Latin), and Incan knot-tying to the development of our modern counting system originating in India in 776 C.E. (which took suspicious Europeans 500 years to adopt!), From Zero to Ten is an entertaining and easy-to-understand introduction to the only truly universal language in the world -- numbers -- and related concepts such as trade, money, measurement, time, and even lucky numbers.

        Book Description

Never mind potatoes. Using a radicchio stalk as a stamp (all it takes is a knife for cutting and an ink pad for coloring), one can discover the flowers in the vegetable garden. And then there are irises, peppers, cabbages, brussels sprouts, tomatoes (only very firm ones are recommended), lettuces, and so on.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Very clever.......2004-12-11

I admit, I just thumbed through this one in the store. It's cute, it's clever, it's thought provoking, and it gives decorative results. It just doesn't have the depth or breadth of Munari's "Tree," for example.

There are lots of good pieces here, some simple and some very subtle. The simple ideas are even simpler than a "potato print." To make a potato print:cut the spud half, incise the exposed flat surface, press the flat side into ink, then press the inked shape onto paper. Here, you just cut the end off the veggie, ink, and stamp. The veg defines its own shape, unique per individual cabbage or radicchio, but similar within a species.

What's cute is the simple stamping technique for creating many families of flower prints. What provokes thought is how the development of the species or individual creates such distinctive marks, and marks distinctive at such different levels. There is subtle biology at work here, made visible in the inked impression.

What lacks, however, is the direction in which a child artist may grow. Munari's "Trees", for example, starts even more simply, but gives even more directions to explore. "Trees" leaves open doors for the visual artist, fractal mathematician, or intelligent child. Munari just didn't rise to his own standard in this book.

This book is good, but Munari has done better. An art instructor may want this book, but amateurs like me can learn more elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Manual for Horse Starting.......2007-01-19

I think it's a wonderful book, and for starting a young horse it's a wonderful guide. Simple, easy step-by-step guides on how to ground drive and then transferring it to saddle, then all the in-saddle work you'll need to have a good, firm riding foundation on your horse. I thought it would have more on groundwork, like some on-the-ground leadership establishing exercises, but I think I just misread it. There IS some wonderful stuff about teaching a young horse to tie, as well as using it and tying them longer and longer to teach patience.

Overall it's a wonderful book for the horse who has the VERY basics down (leading, picking up feet, etc.) and will lead you through the rest, sacking out, tying up, saddling, ground driving, NECK REINING (VERY good section here!), and more foundation building riding lessons.

Our Garden Lover's Guide series has been hailed by Garden Design as "eminently practical" and by Home as "authoritative" and "indispensible." Each book is designed for readers to use as they travel through a state or region. Similar to our highly successful European garden guides, the U. S. guides are illustrated in full color with numerous photographic images and watercolor drawings of the most significant gardens, all specially commissioned for these books. Dreams of Grace - Images and Remembrances from the Dance Department at LaGuardia High School.

Combine Frank Peters' photography and the loving commentary from former students and instructors and you have this joyous look inside New York's public high school for the arts. Dreams of Grace is filled with gorgeous photographs of the dancers, on stage and in the classroom.

The school solicited their alumni and former instructors for commentary and remembrances. Here's one example:

"Dance in America has been enriched by LaGuardia. It brings young people to the art that otherwise may not have had the means or opportunity." May O'Donnell, Past Instructor

This book was all right, but the best book on the subject I've read is entitled: Bridal Bargains: Secrets to Having a Fantastic Wedding on Realistic Budget. There were numerous names of vendors and suppliers for desirable brand named items at discount prices. A fabulous find and reference. Elaine Bales Anchorage, Alaska

I just finished reading this book. Although I have only begun planning my wedding, I had already started to feel very overwhelmed at trying to pull off the wedding I wanted for as many people as I wanted, for a mere $10000. This book really helped calm the fears, and inspired me to believe I can do this. Hopefully the tips and worksheets will help, and the checklists of questions to ask vendors seem like they will be wonderful to have. I recommend this book to anyone who (like me) thinks it is insane to spend an outrageous amount of money on just one day, but still wants to have a wedding that doesn't look cheap and poorly done.

Finally, a book on getting more out of your wedding budget without resorting to obviously cheesy things that show you cut corners. Our copy has more pages dog-eared and highlighted than not, and we're even passing ideas along to our friends. The reception section on what to order for food choices was terrific, and I especially loved the part about where to look for a wedding gown that's not one of those cut-rate wedding factories and still find a big bargain on a designer dress. If you want to get twice or three times the wedding for what you have to spend, get this book and get ready to highlight all the great ideas. We're going to have a much better wedding now since we read this.

We were given this book by a friend for our son's Blessing. It is the perfect little book. Has really cute pictures and nice verses. We read this to our son when he needs a "quick book" at the end of the day. We actually call those nights "Bless Me" nights. He really likes and quiets down as soon as we start into the first page. We are buying this book for a friend's Bris. So it is also multi-denominational. Very cute!

This book is so adorable and perfect to read to your child before bedtime. With just a few words a page, your child will love the simplicity of this prayer, along with the great pictures. "Bless the moon, Bless the stars, Bless my night-light, Bless my cars, Bless my trucks, Bless my chairs, Bless my table, Bless my bears, etc!" This has become a favorite.

I came across this book at Ross or Marshall's (can't recall which). It is by far one of my favorite night time books. It's simple. A lot like Good Night Moon but it is about objects that truely exsist in a child's room.

In this affecting memoir of his childhood in a "blue sky" family--the aerospace community of California, specifically those working for Lockheed--David Beers mourns the passing of an era of limitless possibility and exploding prosperity. Combining poignant family reminiscence, interviews, and brief essays on culture and technology, this book paints a convincing and elegiac portrait of life in 1950s and 1960s America. Beers's father, Hal, a former aviator turned Lockheed engineer, is at the center of the book, and the author's deep ambivalence toward him mirrors his ambivalence toward the values surrounding his "blue sky" upbringing.

                                Book Description

Beer’s “important...fascinating” book(Los Angeles Times) shows how suburban California came to epitomize the american Dream-until its affluent complacency was shattered by downsizing, anxiety, and distrust.

                                5 out of 5 stars Amazing........2007-06-04

This book is amazing. There is a belief that if we just work hard enough, all come together and contribute the right little pieces, we can make everything good, without changing ourselves. This book is an examination of that mythology. In the end it was fear that fed it. The idols, sputnik, Apollo, were false, designed to give the nation(s) something to believe in besides fear. In the end it may be story of how we came to find that massive technology, and massive coordinated efforts were not the answer.

                                2 out of 5 stars Blame dad.......2007-01-09

The author definitely has some issues with his father. It's always easiest to blame the parents. Although well organized, it's still a pretty cheap piece of whining.

On reading "Blue Sky Dream" I am reminded that once there was a nation that thought it could do anything-There still is: ISS-International Space Station.

4 out of 5 stars Blue Sky or Rust Belt, it happened to us all...........2004-08-02

I bought this book because I heard that it was about the decline of the aerospace industry in California and how it affected the family of one engineer. This attracted me first of all because my lifetime dream had always been to work in aerospace, preferably in California. The second reason was that I had never achieved this dream and I wanted some indication that it wasn't all that it was cracked up to be- sour grapes on my part. I came away with conflicted opinions. Deep down I didn't want that "Blue Sky Dream" to be over, to be less than my dream. I recognized my own early upbringing in the tale- the worship of Von Braun, the Chesley Bonestell art, the model planes, Tom Swift books, the electronic kits and erector sets, Lost in Space- all of it. Yet, the overall experience was not exactly nostalgia, or if it was, it was a bitter nostalgia.

The author does an extremely good job of capturing the feelings of the time. I knew exactly what he was talking about. The experiences with the wide open, empty world of the new subdivision was mine (though ours was in a former cornfield and not an orchard.) Also, when things began to turn sour and he realized that paradise wasn't all it was cracked up to be I knew exactly what he was describing. However, perhaps because I'm a little older I also identified with his engineer father. While I never made it into aerospace I did make it into less glamorous engineering projects in equally less glamorous surroundings. You see, the rust belt experience is in many ways similar to that of the blue sky belt- but it hit us earlier and harder. My parents lost that suburban ranch. There were no huge government interventions to buy us time; in fact the government siphoned resources out of the rust belt to build the blue sky belt- continously. To be fair, the author does point this out.

I found the book on the whole to be satisfying- if not optimistic. I recognized the ring of truth here. I also recognized the problems that he was describing, especially the sell-out of engineers and workers by a management with no drive or imagination. He is correct in why there was no peace dividend and no retooling of industry into useful peacetime production. It never happened. Moreover, we are now all freelancers with no security, no benefits, no guidance, and no inspiration.

The book is not totally without hope however. The deep, almost mystic, faith of the author's mother speaks to that. That's the remarkable thing about my experience reading this book, for I saw myself in the experiences and attitudes of the father, the son, and the mother at different stages of my own life. Unlike the author I do not see the inherent incompatibility of science on the one hand and mystic faith on the other. You just have to decide what represents a higher reality, and what represents a lower, you just have to get your priorities straight. Maybe one day the whole country will get its priorities straight too.

                                5 out of 5 stars A similar life.......2000-02-29

While my dad worked in a steel mill in western Pa. this is my story too. It is the story of growing up, Catholic, in the 60's & 70's in a small town. The Lost in Space chapter is fun, since I collect LIS toys now.The author was shooting higher than this, but it hit me emotionally at a lower level. I enjoyed the book, and have re-read it many times.

Finalist in ForeWord Magazine's Book of the Year Award Health Category!

A simple, straightforward guide for improving health and well-being by learning to hear and heed intuitive knowledge and wisdom.

For more than a century, Americans relied heavily on allopathic physicians to diagnose and treat illness. In the past 20 years, however, a dramatic shift in attitudes toward health and healing has taken place, with more and more people now looking within themselves for healing.

Provocative without being controversial, Health Intuition offers a simple, effective, and practical approach to improving health by using one's intuition. In a clear, easy-to-follow fashion, author Karen Kassy lays out common problems, patterns, and issues that block individuals from optimum health--and more importantly, describes how to discover and solve them. Using intriguing anecdotes and case studies, Kassy, a practicing health intuitive, demonstrates the principles of health and shows how they apply to--and can be used by--anyone. Health Intuition's strength lies in its simplicity and timeliness, building on popular theories and presenting them at an easily accessible level.

                                      Thank you, Ms Kassy!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guidance from a kind woman........2002-12-31

I remember walking into a bookstore and like a beacon going over to the display of this book when it was newly released. After reading the back I knew it was for me. Fast forward a couple years and I have finally read the book. If you are a fan of Caroline Myss and alternative health, this is a must-read.

Unlike some other (medical) intuitives (it is a growing field), Karen's approach is unique. Her kind and gentle manner come through in her writing. Her advice is excellent and she is experienced in this field. The book weaves personal stories of clients throughout her own personal story and development of her gift of health intuition. This means she is able to understand your personal health issues by knowing your name and age. She practices a holistic view health, meaning she is concerned with the mental and emotional aspects of health and healing as well as physical. Her book is well written and you can easily grasp which areas of health might be ones for you to work on.

I also had the opportunity to receive a health intuitive reading from Karen most recently. She was right-on about many things with my own health and offered suggestions I had not considered. Her website has more information on how to contact her: ...

5 out of 5 stars How to let your intuition guide your life changing decisions.......2000-12-02

Karen Kassy's book is a priceless guide to contacting your own inner intuitive guidance system. The clearly written instructions and guidelines are easy to follow. Within the first week after reading the book I was able to receive very helpful, clear guidance involving business matters and health matters, especially from the aspect of stress reduction.

Chapters include a description of Kassy's work as a medical intuitive aiding others with her intuitive readings of their health problems, and chapters outlining medthods for readers to follow in doing their own intuitive work.

She is very careful to give thorough explanations as well as suggestions for conserving your own energy when working with problem situations and people.

Her confidence in everyone's ability to contact their own intutive energy is very reassuring. She writes with the tone of a very caring teacher and friend.

Her book is the perfect gift for the new year.
