Book Description
Oxygen binding proteins are large multi unit proteins ideally suited for the study of structure function relationships in biological molecules. This book, based on a Symposium at the Xth International Biophysics Congress in 1990, provides a synthesis of recent advances in our knowledge of invertebrate oxygen carriers such as hemoglobins, hemocyanins, and hemorythrins. Comprehensive reviews are combined with new research results of importance to all biochemists and molecular biologists interested in oxygen carriers in general, their gene structure and comparative biochemistry. Of particular value are the studies of invertebrate oxygen binding proteins which perform their function and have structures vastly different from the vertebrate hemoglobins and myoglobins, as well as numerous examples of modern molecular techniques as applied to research on this diverse group of proteins.

Customer Reviews:
Expensive City.......2006-05-03
This book is breezy, chatty, and eager to please. The writers want to be your friend on your visit to London. One restaurant review suggests you avoid the salmon; the description of the Tower of London tour warns you away from the locking-up ceremony, calling it "cheesy." The cheerful tone the writers take is wonderful, but that doesn't excuse the fact that they think the average visitor to London is made of money.
Admittedly, like most crowded cities, London is notorious for its high prices. But if you limit your visit to the highlights in this pocket-sized volume you will be seeing a very expensive city. The authors' idea of an "inexpensive" hotel can run over 95 pounds per night, which to this working-class Anglophile is pretty pricy. And their discussion of shopping focuses heavily on Harrod's and the Carnaby Street revival, not the nieghborhood shops and pubs where you can get a nice shirt and a pint without being singled out as a tourist.
And if you're more interested in culture than in bringing home trophies, the authors aren't speaking your language. Though they touch on highlights like the RSC and the Tate Modern, frankly most of us only needed those pointed out on a map; thorough reviews were superfluous. How about the more esoteric theatres and museums, the small coffee shops where folkies play Welsh murder ballads, the walking tour that takes in the best busking corners? I'd pay good money for a tour guide that included those.
I can't call this guidebook bad. If you have mad money enough to throw around with moderate abandon, this book may well be right up your street. As I've mentioned above, its pointers and reviews are thorough, not to mention affable and organized. But for curious college students, sailors on leave, and the eager working American who manages to swing two weeks off work, this book is way out of your league. Keep browsing for the right volume, because this one ain't it.

Book Description
Which is more important, the coffee you drink or the cup you drink it from? The choice is a difficult one for any aesthete to make, and it is only highlighted and intensified by famed Italian coffeemaker illycaff , which, since 1933, has been producing one of the world's greatest espressos, and which, since 1992, has been commissioning limited-edition coffee cup designs from internationally renowned and emerging artists, musicians, and filmmakers. If the story of the coffee begins with Francesco Illy in Trieste, the story of the cup begins in 1990 with architect and engineer Matteo Thun, who designed a white espresso cup to the exacting specifications of the Illy family. The volume and diameter had to be just so, the rim had to accept resting lips in a most practical manner, and the all-important bowl at the bottom of the cup had to conserve heat effectively. Once the prototype was approved, the family set about having it transformed with original work by the likes of Sandro Chia, Nam June Paik, James Rosenquist, Robert Rauschenberg, David Byrne, Francis Ford Coppola, Joseph Kosuth, Jeff Koons, Marina Abramovic, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Michel Comte, Jannis Kounellis, and Louise Bourgeois. Good to the last drop--unless coffee isn't your cup of tea.
Customer Reviews:
A must for any ILLY COLLECTION fan........2005-10-03
Illy to some is the best coffee in the world, I can't say that since I have not tasted them all but I do love Illy, especially their espresso pods, but Illy is more than just coffee, they represent the most advanced and yet the most simple of pleasures... and their cup embodies that. This book is all about that, It covers the creation and a good decade's worth of artisitic varatations on the Illy cup.
I have been bitten by the Illy Collection bug and own a few of the sets, it's nice to have this book as a guide to the "expensive" past. The only problem is that the collection is only through 2003, so it is missing the 2004/2005 cups. Espresso has never been so stylish!

Book Description
Canes and pipes, especially those made from found materials or by unsophisticated craftsmen, have long been of special interest to carvers and collectors. This guide collects over 200 pen and ink sketches of canes and pipes executed over a period of 35 years by an extraordinary folk artist. These sketches, very impressive in their own right, depict a strange and wonderful group of objects, many with fanciful carvings of mythical or imagined people and animals.
Customer Reviews:
Too weird for me!.......2003-03-24
The carving drawings are ugly and demon-like. If you dig the bizarre, then this is the book for you!
An excellent book of designs and sketches..........1997-02-19
This is an excellent collection of cane and pipe designs! The designs are quite imaginative. While some are impractical, most make very good walking sticks. This is not a book for neophyte cane makers, but a great addition to your shop library

ferns are some of my favorite plants. This is a great book and I have had it a while I use it every time I teach a class on ferns. I really like the comarison shots of the different selection. THose really help to Identify labeless plants. I would have like some of the info in a bullit points at the beging or end of each enrty. for height hardiness and the like the stuff that every entry should have this would have made the book easier to use. BUt that doesn't mean I wouldn't get it I love this book. It is a must have.
the book is usefull.......2001-05-25
I am a gardener (for research) in China, these days I thought of using ferns on landscafe,I have know few about how to grow the ferns before.By a chance,I read the book at a professor's home,'Oh,it is very usefull for me!',I thought at the same time.But...but I dont know how to get the book. Book Description
In recent years, the number of strip clubs in the United States has increased dramatically. Dressed up with terms such as "gentlemen's clubs," they often feature valet parking, limousines, executive dining rooms, extravagant menus-and, of course, topless or nude women dancing on stage. Stripping has become a big business, with over 3.5 million people, primarily men, attending clubs each week. But what about the women who perform in the clubs? Why do they do it? What is their perception of their job?
Numerous interviews with working strippers accompany extensive research in the literature. Some strippers see stripping as simply a job, others view it with a degree of embarrassment, while many see it as an opportunity for empowerment. Few became strippers by design but a surprising number continue to strip for many years. The use of drugs and instances of abuse are covered, as are the views of the strippers' families.
Customer Reviews:
Elizabeth, Pole Dancer from SC.......2007-07-10
My thoughts are that this book was way over priced for its contents.
The concept of a man trying to write a book discussing anything about the trials and tribulations of women in the Adult Entertainment Industry is tiring and long winded. The interviews are all the same. You could save yourself the time, spend the same money in a club and interview the dancers yourself. I was recommended to read this book for its historical element in context to pole dancing and burlesque. I found a few funny tidbits of information none of which I believe to be totally factual and not fabricated from the male point of view.
This book was supposed to be a book-length study designed to explore the stripper's "image, her person, and her meaning". In the first half of the book, the author explores the dancers' working conditions, the pros and cons of being an exotic dancer. In the second half of the book, the author decides how and why the dancer has become mythologized by men in today's day and age. The author constructs an extensive binary between the dancer as an ideal, "...ever available, infinitely gratifying, monolithically sexual, and physically ideal..." and as a demon who displays her sexual power only to refuse the men to whom she is this object of display (113-125). The author interviews a small number of dancers for this research of which he never identifies the exact number, and while the first half of the book is fairly inclusive of their thoughts and ideas, the second half is practically devoid of anything except the author's personal theorizing.
In one of his chapters, the author allows the women in his study to describe the benefits of exotic dancing as an occupation. Many of the dancers interviewed report feeling a stronger sense of self; these women have become more sure of themselves as women, and feel that a certain amount of personal growth has occurred as a result of stripping. For many women, a greater sense of satisfaction with their physical bodies is reported, and women also remark on a heightened sense of confidence that pervades their daily lives.
Thus it is evident that many of these women derive a sense of empowerment from being dancers. The following chapter includes a lengthy discussion of the scarring psychological effects of stripping, thus undermining some of these women's statements.
Does nothing to dispel a persons misconceptions.......2001-04-05
The interviews were a little interesting, the book was well written and structured, however it does not discuss the relationship of prostitution to stripping, pervasive influence of government and/or organized crime nor the long term effects such exploitive use of a strippers beauty may have had on their relationships since. The concept seems to need a little more in-depth exploration. I also felt that the critical, feministic theory is limited to only a few paragraphs and it should have been covered more thoroughly. I don't think this book does much to challenge a persons preconceptions or prejudices.
Interesting if you know nothing about the adult industry.......2001-04-04
Pornography and adult entertainment has truely grown within the last few years. Everything is pretty much accepted, so it's no surprise that more and more books are being written on topics such as these. My problem with this boko and many like it, is that they're all written along the same lines. There are hundreds of strip-clubs throughout the United States, Mexico and Canada. This book covers interviews with strippers to find out why they strip and how they feel about it. All the answers are the same, too bad. It should cover interviews on the men that visit these clubs. Why do they visit these clubs, what do they think about the strippers, how much are they willing to spend, etc. Since all these stripper books are the same, I was hoping someone would cover interviews with the patrons instead of the stripers. Overall, this book was not worth reading.
It seems like all these stipper stories are always the same........2001-04-04
This book is too expensive for the contents. The book covers why women strip in clubs, then it goes on through many chapters of explanations, but in the end it tells us that it's because they make good money and fast. The book goes on to explain a strippers percetion of her job, then it goes on to tell us that strippers go through greatlengths to justify what they do and how they blame society, x-relationships, family and others, but never themselves. The book goes through many interviews, all of which are very much common and related. A good girl strips to finance her education, to support her children after her man leaves her or to support a drug habit. Or the most common, but not admitted, just for the money. This good is well written, but the story about all these stippers are all the same in this book and on every television review or movie. I wish this book would have covered something new, useful or insightful.
Fascinating and authoritative...well-written and thoughtful........1999-04-16
Fascinating and authoritative sociological study of strippers and stripping. Based on exhaustive interviews. Well-written and thoughtful book for anyone who wants to better understand both the day to day life of strippers and the psychological underpinnings of the world of the strippers and their patrons.

Rich and thorough.......2006-01-01
A very descriptive account of life and environment in the Arab world, the author brings details of familial relationships that are absolutely foreign to the Western world. She is an Australian woman trying to fit into a world that doesn't allow for anything she is used to. Romantic, intuitive, caring, in the end total failure.
It is THAT world vs. THIS world. Will the gap ever be bridged? The author can make you believe that it never will. This is excellent literature for anyone interested in learning about the Arab world.
Honest and true.......2001-08-16
un my opinion this book is one of the few books that give an honest opinion about the Arab world and its rich culture. And as an Arab i'm very happy and pleased to know that there are people who give other cultures a chance to be explained and understood.

tell us more.......2000-05-20
I found this first novel/autobiography interesting but incomplete. Perhaps the author is still too close to the events and to her husband and thus unable, or unwilling, to to be frank with us. At the end of Michele Drouart's book, her husband remains a shadowy stranger. We gain very little insight into their relationship and yet he must surely be the character, aside from herself, who we need to know - even if only through her eyes.
What is refreshing, is that Drouart is not judgemental of the Jordanian society of which she is unable to become a part.Indeed, she greatly admires the sisterhood of women in that culture. The women of the family are very accepting of her and eager that she should feel welcome. This is no rehash of "Not Without My Daughter". I feel it is a genuine attempt to understand another culture without imposing our own value system. Like Drouart, I am a West Australian woman also raised in a conservative WASP environment (White, anglo saxon, protestant) and I found it most interesting to read of a life whose experiences are so different to my own. However, she leaves me feeling disappointed that she was unable to share more of herself with us.
