During sleep, the mammalian brain generates an orderly progression of low frequency oscillations. The nature of these oscillations changes as the brain moves from sleep onset into deep sleep. Although readily measured and recorded, the underlying neural mechanisms involved and the purpose of these oscillations have remained unclear. However, as we learn more about the properties of neurons in the thalamus and cerebral cortex and their interactions, it has become possible to suggest a role for these occurrences. This book reviews the molecular components and ionic mechanisms underlying sleep oscillations, including their distorsion into epileptic seizures. It reviews the properties of ion channels, synaptic interactions, intrinsic cellular behaviour, and how these elements assemble into oscillating circuits and networks. The precision experimental data collected has provided a foundation for the study of dynamic activity in the central nervous systems and it is now possible to suggest a role for thalamocortical oscillations in memory consolidation. Thalamocortical Assemblies is for neuroscientists, neurobiologists, physiologists and other researchers interested in sleep and memory processes.

This book presents a very complete overview of the physiology of thalamic neurons. It covers both single neuron and circuit properties. It explores the mechanisms underlying normal and pathological oscillations in which the thalamus is involved. I liked very much the last chapter which speculates about the role of oscillations in memory consolidation. The book is very clearly organized, goes in the detail. The only criticism is that it is rather for a specialized audience with a solid background in electrophysiology.

Heaven on Earth.......2007-06-04

This slight book reads like a leisurely travel article from a magazine that offers good wine with the article. Cunningham gets the facts and history of Provincetown straight but he adds to his narrative his personal anecdotes. This is what wonderful writing is: a perfect blend of the factual and the personal. Having lived in this place that is heaven on earth---Provincetown---I was touched deeply by this little book. Many times while reading it and certainly when I finished I wished I could leave cloudy Los Angeles for the golden perfect light of Cape Cod. Bravo, Mr. Cunningham, for another lovely piece of writing.

A Gay Man Walks...and walks...and (?)...in Provincetown .......2004-11-24

I bought this book having read another book in the series about Nantucket, and having lived on the Cape for a good part of my life, I am always interested in adding another book on the Cape to my small collection. This book however is not so much about Provincetown, a town on Cape Cod, as it is a gay guy's experience of life in P-town. It begins well enough. Then the author shares with us that he prefers the company of men. Okay, do we really need to know? Well, apparently, because he goes on and on until he takes us into an almost surreal Breugel-esque night landscape of men languishing after men's love. One has the impression that beyond every dune, behind every door and around every corner there are men having sex- not just any men, but painfully beautiful men according to the author. On page 119, I learn that Provincetown is being "widowed by AIDS"- being a widow myself I wonder what the comparison is that he is making- will we be left with only the natural beauty of the Cape to comfort us? Will we be able to go to the beach without having to ask how to get to the heterosexual family beach? (Well, I did learn that much). One can only hope. I agree with another reviewer that the research is meager- the anecdotes uninteresting. What a disappointment.

A Fine Book About a Fine Place.......2003-07-08

Michaeal Cunningham loves Provincetown and conveys that love in every sentence in this beautifully written book about a great town. He ably does what every travel writer should do: he convinces those who have never been to Provincetown to visit and makes those who have been there want to return.

Mr. Cunningham does a thorough job of describing the town's geography as well as both the famous artists who lived there in the past and those of the present, also the "town characters" one can run into on the busy streets on any summer day. There is also poems by Mark Doty, Stanley Kunitz, Robert Pinsky and Melvin Dixon, among others included throughout the book.

Finally Mr. Cunningham discusses the effect AIDS has had on the gay population of Provincetown in a chapter called "Death and Life" and pays tribute to a friend named Billy who died from AIDS. "Provincetown has been widowed by the AIDS epidemic. It will never fully recover, though it is accustomed to loss. . . Provincetown possesses, has always possessed, a steady, grieving competence in the face of all that can happen to people. It watches and waits; it keeps the lights burning. If you are a man or woman with AIDS there, someone will always drive you to your doctor's appointments, get your groceries if you can't get them yourself, and take care of whatever needs taking care of."

Is there any wonder why this writer loves Provincetown?

Old and New Cape Cod.......2003-06-06

I have never been a lover of P-town. As a child, my family made a yearly visit to climb the Pilgrim Monument, but as I got older, the long drive from our Harwich vacation home (also on Cape Cod) home made climbing the monument less appealing. Every now and then, I did visit the place, but more often than not, I found it crowded and congested, and always had trouble finding a parking space. The art galleries, a small book store, a store that sells all sorts of odds and ends, and of course the people made a visit to the town worthwhile, but I never realized what all the hype was about until I read this book. Lands End gave me an appreciation for the town and the people, and the history, and when I recently visited the town, I had a new appreciation for this interesting and varied community, largely due to Cunningham's ability to be a "tour guide."

Cunningham's book is almost a guided tour, not by a tour director who is just doing a routine job, but one who actually loves the place being visited. As he takes readers on a tour of the sights and sounds of the town, we see a place where he grew both as a person and as a writer. Though the work is factual, it flows more like a book of prose than a piece of journalism. Cunningham's awe of the rugged beauty of this small town on the Atlantic coast is easy to detect. He also seems to feel as if he is a kindred spirit to the artists and writers who inhabit this town, known both on and off season as an art and writing colony. His book treats the locals with respect. Provincetown has become rather well known as a "gay Mecca." Cunningham certainly makes mention of the many aspects of this town that are part of a gay culture, but Cunningham writes in such a way that the entire Provincetown community-locals, gays and straights, artists, writers, business people, and tourists, all make Provincetown the beautiful, somewhat quirky, but interestingly cohesive community it is today.

People who love Cape Cod will enjoy this book. Those who have visited the town will have a greater appreciation of the community after reading this book. Tourists will find the book a nice memory of a unique town. Provincetown visitors who are less than fans may find a new appreciation for the town and will once again struggle with the transportation woes of the town.

One Man's Love of Land's End!.......2003-05-10

"A Walk Through Provincetown" is not your typical travel guide. Cunningham was invited to contribute to a series of travel books and this is his unique and inspiring contribution. It's a one man journey across a town that he first came to over twenty years ago. Cunningham has given us an interesting combination of historical facts and personal reflections. He describes Provincetown's cultural interests, its shops, bars, street life, heritage, gay cruising areas, and its historical sites.

Cunningham presents a very personal view of Provincetown, one that is filled with wonder, joy, and a deep love of this town. He always writes beautifully, and this book includes poems and prose passages from many of Provincetown's other distinguished writers. This book is a pleasure to read for anyone who cares about this very special place, and for those not familiar with the town, a way to learn about it from someone who cares. This is an elegant personal tour of a town that has always been rich in diversity. Hopefully, it will remain that way for this generation and generations to come. Cunningham has made a great contribution in furthering that goal. A wonderful book!

It is reminiscent of the huge Doodle Art posters that I colored as a kid. I recently bought another one of those posters at a drug store, and loved it so much, that I looked for similar items here on amazon.com. If you love coloring in detailed patterns, and enjoy the almost meditative state it can put you in, then buy this book right away!

This is a great book to color that will hold your interests for a long time.Designs are very complex bordering the realms of geometric designs ,floral patterns , and stained glass window all rolled into one page of intricate detail, printed on a non-bleeding , high quallity paper.I started coloring this book with my girlfriend one day out of boredom and before I knew it , I was starting the next page and then the next... My only possible complaint (had I any to offer ) would be the fact of not being able to locate more publications by Christine Dymond . Definitely a good choice.

This book is really only a small bird species guide. It really doesn't tell how to care for birds much at all. If you want a small reference manual for caged bird species then this book is for you. If you want a bird care guide, look elsewhere.

A vast well of information on different bird species!.......1998-08-25

As a Veterinary Technician, bird breeder and bird enthusiast,I highly reccomend this book to anyone interested in bird keeping. It is not limited to the normal birds as you might find in aviculture, as it has sections on wild birds, and birds of prey. It has 8 sections high-lighting the different families of birds, then breaks that down species by specie. It has a nice intro to bird keeping, housing, basic care and diet. I would have liked to see more info on manufactured parrot diets, but the author does have illistrations showing different seed diets available. In the birds section, this manual REALLY shines! it gives easy to understand symbols for at-a-glance comparisons to other birds. Some of these are: ease of care, size, noise level,aviary type, temperment, and basic breeding info. The photos of the birds are breath taking, and the book boasts over 200 of them!The last section deals with disease and first aid, a topic which would be a manual on its own, and the book gives good information in an easy to understand way. It's also a nice high quality soft cover book, that you can return to over and over. A must while at the bird show!

Rock on Record Collectors.......2003-06-09

This is an awesome reference guide. Let me first say that I am not a hard core record collector. I have about 600 albums and a few 45s. I found Goldmine Record & Prices the perfect reference book to help me identify and price my collection. It's easy to use and compact so that I can carry it with me when I go looking for records to add to my collection. And the price is great when you consider that there are almost 30,000 records listed. Plain and simple: It's the best value out there.

Rock and roll and Frank Sinatra.......2002-09-02

Goldmine magazine officially recognizes two forms of popular music: rock and roll and Frank Sinatra. On occasion, it grudgingly concedes the existence of other things, like R&B, country, and rock and roll. Oh, wait--I already mentioned rock and roll. So, it's no surprise that this price guide avoids most of the "adult pop" people who sold tons of vinyl from the late 50s through the early 1970s--folks like Johnny Mathis, Ray Conniff, Vicki Carr, Mantovani, and Percy Faith. The premier denouncer of rock among pop singers, Frank Sinatra, is included, however, though Perry Como, who had many times more hits, is nowhere to be found. The Beatles are mentioned any number of times in the introduction, because, naturally, anyone consulting a record price guide will want to know about all things Beatles. Cliche City, U.S.A. Well laid-out, anyway, and useful for cross-indexing years of release for albums and 45s not listed herein. Goldmine's anti-"pop" bias, though, is a problem.

Breathtaking pictures, spellbinding!.......2007-10-03

The book is full of breathtaking photos of honed bodies of ballet dancers of one of the most famous dance group in Europe. It is poetry in motion. By its sheer aesthetic value the book will make a valuable addition to any home collection. Keep it on your coffee table at all times and keep it open. A great conversation piece that your guest will not want to put down.

Talk about uninspiring............2006-04-05

This is photography? The photos are just plain aweful. The photos are uninspiring. It's mostly grainy documentary photos of the Stuttegart ballet. The studio shots are boring, usually taken with one light source from above, and the poses are very typical and unoriginal. The worst are the blown up cropped shots that looks like images that an amateur photography would do.

The book also has extremely poor layout, it seems it was trying to be creative with it. For example, you have many full page spread with just one word scaled up to fill the space. Then you have pages with one small photo that fills up about a fifth of the space.

I was hoping to find compelling and dynamic or just plain interesting photos, but found none. You might want to wait until this goes in to the bargain bin before purchasing. I know this is a harsh review, but I was very dissappointed with how some people could publish snapshots and call it photography.

I have returned this book to amazon.
