Gobs of information! This book didn't leave me on an abandoned trial that is blocked by a new housing development like SOME BOOKS. Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource.......2007-07-11

This book organizes all of its road rides and off-road rides together in 8 geographic areas in Northern California, and includes difficulty ratings, distance, time, elevation profile, map, directions and useful descriptions for each ride. What I like best is the author's lists of "best" bike rides in 12 different categories, such as Best Oceanfront Rides, Best Rides for Wildlife Viewing, and Best Rides to Waterfalls, among others. It covers more routes than any other bike guide I've seen or owned.

5 out of 5 stars very handy indeed.......2004-02-03

I am an avid biker (http://www.sujee.net/outdoors/biking/) and this book has found a permanant place in my camel-back! I have read/bought my share of biking books in Northern california. But I liked this one better b/c

    A) rides are clearly classified mountain or road : this seems trivial, but more than once I had turned up to a trail with my road bike, just to find out the trail is not paved / dirt.

    B) Every ride has clearly marked 'how to get there' 'difficulty' and 'elevation maps', etc.

    C) All rides are neatly catogorized into locations and a very easy to use reference / Table of Contents

    D) Plenty of rides for every level. Most of them have a little 'insider tips' as well.

Great Book! This is what you should know, at the very least, before you go out to buy a German Shorthaired Pup. If your breeder isn't raising the litter this way look elsewhere. This breed is one of the smartest types of dog around. BUT you have to start them early and you can not slack up on them. If you follow the guides in this book it is easy, but Please give your dog these needed encouragements to be "ALL THAT HE CAN BE" If you were to follow this book to the letter both you and your dog will be winners.

4 out of 5 stars Basic Grounding and Reference Material.......2000-05-29

This book is informative for the novice GSP owner and also a useful reference book for owners who show and work. Valuable breed line information in one book.

3 out of 5 stars Okay for a beginner who needs basic info regarding training........1999-04-08

Unfortunately, the paper is of a much higher quality than the information or organization of the book. There is very little information regarding American field trials. The scant info included is primarily about a few midwestern GSP trainers and owners. There is no information regarding NAVHDA field trials. The training book published by NAVHDA is a much better more systematic guide to training a verstile hunting dog such as the GSP.

Most of the info on kennels and breeders is focused on show kennels and show dogs. For those readers interested in history of the GSP and current trends in breeding in a much more comprehensive manner, I recommend Der Deutsch-Kurzhaar. It costs 3 times as much but is 20 times better.

3 out of 5 stars If you don't hunt with your GSP, don't read this book........1997-05-18

I had to give this book a low score, but I admit Mr. Layton didn't write it for me. If you are planning to hunt, try, and show your GSP, then this is the book for you. But if you are like me, and you want a dog as a loving family member, active participant in outdoor events; if you could care less about the dog's lineage (as long as he is healthy); and if you think the AKC and FCI are just a bit nuts for telling you your dog is no good because he is a few centemeters too short, don't read this book. Admittedly, most GSP owners are professional handlers and hunters. But there are a lot of us out there, too. And we don't appreciate Mr. Layton's snide remarks about those who hold the quite reasonable belief that it is possible to enjoy nature without murdering it. This book presents a strange mix. It is at once too detailed and too simple. For example, the section on breeding bitches is excellently detailed, but I doubt the average reader would use this book as a guide in that regard. By contrast, the sections on puppy and field training are woefully inadequate, and the only way to train a dog according to this book would be to select a previously trained dog to work with, which defeats the purpose. Mr. Layton assumes too much of his readers. Somehow, he goes from his excellent section on birth to a similarly excellent section on advanced retrieval work. But how we got our week-old puppy to that advanced state of training seems to have been left on the editing-room floor. I also did not enjoy Mr. Layton's superscilious atttitude toward raising dogs. Though he is correct that the safest bet in purchasing a dog is to buy a puppy from a reputable breeder, those of us who rescue adult GSPs from the pound (and certain euthanasia) and work patiently with them, knowing that they will probably never achieve their puppy potential, deserve the accolades (not the derision) of our fellow dog owners. In sum, if this is the only book you will ever buy for your GSP, find something else. If you are a hunter or champion breeder, this may be the book for you. If you are training your dog independently, and want this book only as a supplement, enjoy it. But to anyone who can't understand why some humans get a thrill out shooting defenseless creatures for sport, steer clear--this book will only upset you.

If you want to grow your own food, but don't have any space, this is the book for you. Even though it's set in the UK, and I live in Australia, I found plenty of ideas that I was able to use to successfully grow food in a 2 square metre plot behind my house. There are lots of different options shown (eg rooftop, indoors, balcony, pots), with lots of colour photographs. I liked that there was a focus on design as well- not only should the area be productive, it should look attractive.

5 out of 5 stars What a breath of fresh air.......2003-01-06

Living in a small space with no bed to call my own I picked up this book and read it. It was wonderful! Lots of information on gardening specifically for the urban dweller. The photographs were wonderful, as was the writing. Included information on raised beds, regular beds, container gardening, fruits and vegetables, flowers, and anything else the city dweller might want to grow. Also included really interesting information on pollution and its effects on the urban dweller's garden and information on pests and what can be done to control them. There was also a heavy influence of organic gardening and how this might be done in the city.

An excellent book all around, it's become my new favourite gardening book.

4 out of 5 stars Practical planning for the small garden.......2003-05-15

          Really Small Gardens.

This is the Royal Horticultural Society's "practical guide to gardening in a truly small space" and it is a very comprehensive guide to planning a small garden. The author has covered all the planning bases in a down-to-earth, practical style.

Written by a garden designer whose tiny gardens have won awards at the famed Chelsea Flower Show in England, this book has a wealth of ideas for gardens, courtyards, rooftops and alleyways - all presented with the eye of the artist.

She spends time helping the reader deal with the elements of a small garden that a reader might be stuck with. She offers ideas for gardens that might be too shady, too hot, too exposed, cursed with clay soil, overlooked by a hideous brick wall, or containing ugly sheds, manhole covers and electricity meters. Not only are the ideas suggested, but at the back there is a how-to-do-it section to help you make the vision a reality. I found this very valuable. It's all very well saying "Hide an ugly brick wall with a trellis covered with vines", but how do you get a trellis to stand up against a brick wall? This book explains it.

Then having dealt with the problems, she moves along to the possibilities. These is so much you have to choose when you plan any garden, and a tiny space takes more planning than most. Would you like formal or informal? Crammed with plants or restrained? Would you like to "borrow" the surrounding scenery or exclude it at all costs? Jill Billlington will take you through the planning for the garden of your dreams.
Lest you thought that gardening was a pastime for gentle souls, in the chapter titled "Illusion" the author has included sections on concealing, exploiting and trickery. It sounds more like Las Vegas than Chelsea Flower Show. But this is where she gets down and dirty with concrete ideas for hiding anything you don't want to see and drawing to everyone's attention the best aspects of your garden.

The book has a directory of what the author calls "tried, tested and dependable" plants for small spaces. This includes some small trees, both deciduous and evergreen (if you should have enough space), as well as shrubs, perennials, climbers, bulbs and annuals. It ends with plans for different shapes and styles of garden and hints about how to shape plants growing beside walls and how to go about making structures such as arches and trellises to support them.

This is a book for anyone planning a small garden. The author's artistic approach is a revelation to gardeners like me who are not very artistic, and will be welcomed by those who are artistic and will enjoy the practical approach of a kindred spirit.

3 out of 5 stars larger type for small gardens.......2000-03-01

This is an intelligently written and photographed primarily European garden book (some American exceptions) but the typeface is so small, it makes enjoying this book extremely difficult. Shame on the publisher.

                            Zaida's book is GOOD!
I could identify with much of what Zaida expressed. I would defintely buy this book again. This is not an elaborate "how to learn to belly dance" book (I learned belly dance 30 years ago-Greek/Turkish, Egpytian and Moroccan styles) it is more of a how to live with Joy and dance in your life. Would like to read more from Ms Carter in the future.

                              Book Description

What really happened to a soldier in the infamous Maori battalion, killed in the battle for Crete during World War II? And why did the soldier’s family place a curse on O’Dwyer, the officer who was his commander at the time he died? Half a century later two Oxford dons, Newall and Winterstoke, attend the funeral of their colleague O’Dwyer, an expatriate New Zealander. After the ceremony, Newall reveals to Winterstoke the story of the curse placed on O’Dwyer during the war and, in the days that follow, he continues the tales of O’Dwyer and his ‘cursed’ life. Slowly the stories of Newall, another New Zealander in self-enforced exile, and of Winterstoke are also revealed in Stead’s complex and subtle narrative which shifts across time and space from New Zealand to Oxford to Croatia and to Crete at the time of the allied defeat there.
