I would use this book as one of the texts if I were teaching a herpetology course. It contains a comprehensive view of snakes' anatomy, sensory organs, and adaptations. If you're looking for a book that will give you an amazing amount of general snake knowledge, this is the book for you. For accounts of particular species, however, you will need to pick up additional material.

That was the word used when I asked my son-in-law how he liked his birthday present. He generally is not a reader but is very interested in snakes. He read the entire book and enjoyed it very much. He said he gained a lot of useful information.

I am not reviewing this book just can find no where to write a review of the site. in the memory you use to put the larger photos on you could put the table of contents and samples in the book. i see no virtual review of the book, nothing about it, no number of pages, no table of contents nothing. so therefore i will not buy from this site. i dont buy what i cant see or have no clue what the contents of the book is. this book is only a book of snakes not sure if it contains what i want or not. all i have a title that is all. titles dont sale books unless one is looking for a specific title.

Heartwarming Story.......2007-10-10
This is a unique and heartwarming story of a lion cub who grew up vegetarian. For those that believe in Heaven and creation, it is a wonderful glance into what was and will be again. For those that do not, it is an interesting and sweet story of a lion who grew up detesting meat and blood. For those who do not know how to eat healthfully as a vegetarian or those that do not understand that no creature truly has the need for ingesting meat or blood, this may seem baffling. But for those of us who have been vegetarian for generations, and healthfully and wonderfully so, or have raised "carnivores" as vegetarians and watched them lead healthy, happy, long lives, it is easy to understand! No matter what side of the creation/evolution carnivore/vegetarian belief you may be on, you will enjoy this non-religious story of the lion who grew up as a gentle giant. It is a wonderful read for children, families, and adults alike. Enjoy!

Little Tyke was truly as gentle as a house kitten. As a boy I knew Georges and Margaret Westbeau and Little Tyke. Not once did Tyke ever display the negative tendencies we expect from a wild animal. She was raised as a member of the Westbeau family, would eat out of your hand, kiss you on the cheek and rub against you for attention. Raised in an atmosphere of love, she returned love to those around her. I have given dozens of copies of Little Tyke as gifts since it's first publication in the 50's, and will continue to do so. Little Tyke definatly understood humans. Her story will change the way you view a lion forever.
Baffling, but true.......2000-03-20
A lion cub is born, apparently allergic to meat and blood. While the diet described should have resulted in blindness and death, she grows to normal sized adulthood as a family pet (!) light reading, no explainations offered. Ripley's believe it or not is offered as a witness. More of a kids book than a serious analysis of the implications, it is a good read and the photos are amazing.

Excellent reference for the serious collector.......1999-02-22
I bought this book, along with Volume 2, a couple of years ago. I have found it to be a thorough reference for the models of rifles discussed. The photography is very good and the author has discussed just about every conceiveable aspect of these old guns. The book is very readable and is brimming with useful information. I credit this book with launching me in a very enjoyable hobby! Anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the intimate details of these guns will do theirself a favor by acquiring this book.

"Gardening is by definition interference with nature," begins Ann Lovejoy cheerfully. That said, gardeners will save themselves no end of trouble by cooperating with nature insofar as possible. Thus naturalistic gardening, which has made real inroads into the more formal, traditional American gardens over the past few years. But naturalistic gardening doesn't mean just throwing a lot of seeds on the ground, or letting the weeds take over. Lovejoy's practiced advice helps gardeners get a handle on constructing a garden that is like nature, but with an element of art. Allow plants to follow their own natures by judicious placement, she counsels, and you will minimize their care as well as reveal their essential beauty.
Lovejoy includes enough practical instructions to allow anyone with a reasonable amount of gardening experience to create a successful naturalistic garden, and the inspiring patterns of the example gardens, beautifully photographed by Allan Mandell, are nicely explained. Lovejoy even gives a chapter to the hotly debated tropicalismo school of naturalistic design. The emphasis is very much on gardening in the northwestern United States, but anyone who yearns for a more natural look in the garden will benefit from the principles outlined here.

Nature, plus........2003-05-23
The subtitle "Reflecting the Planting Patterns of Nature" clearly expresses the focus of this book, as do the first words of the Introduction "Natural gardening is not natural".
The writer, who has earned the American Horticulture Society Writing Award, has authored numerous gardening books and her approach is comfortably informal. She is knowledgeable about the topic, expanding the idea of using native plants and placing them where nature would have them to include the relationships between plant communities and inter-layering canopy trees, shrubs, perennials and ground covers. Each of these may be native or non-native but they echo natural plant patterns of the area and accentuate the features of each plant and its place.
After reading the book I felt I had begun to understand that the look of a natural garden is uncluttered, well proportioned and, large or small, makes a statement about both the gardener and the place.
Based in the Pacific Northwest the writer uses gardens of Washington State, Oregon and British Columbia to illustrate her theme. The many color photographs of Allan Mandell beautifully illustrate the text. (Wonder of wonders these days when many book illustrations are pretty, but quite meaningless on the page.)
This is one of the most practical and yet most lyrical books I have encountered on the topic of natural gardening. It's an art that is not nearly as simple as it appears to be. The writer shows that it can be done with flair and style, even in a small garden and on a limited budget.

A Very Interesting Book.......2001-12-24
Naturalistic Gardening, by Ann Lovejoy, is an excellent book, especially for anyone with woodlands on their property. But the book is useful too for those who just want to fashion gardens that retain that wild feel, that natural look.
The photographs from Allan Mandell are exceptional and capture well the spirit of this fine book. For those gardeners who have never read any of the many gardening books by Ann Lovejoy, this will be a treat. Ms. Lovejoy writes in a way that is always clear and easily understandable, and her writing has a voice that is fun, energetic, full of life.
All of the books by Ms. Lovejoy are quite good, as is Naturalistic Gardening. No mention is made of my own specialty, allergy-free gardening, and some of that component would be welcome here, but still, this is a book to provoke some real thinking--a book to inspire different, less rigid, less formal gardening. I enjoyed it very much.
An Excellent Book.......1999-06-22
Ann Lovejoy is inspiring and fun to read. This book seeks to help the gardener embrace her natural surroundings in creating a garden that mimics natural forms and "layers". Ms. Lovejoy shares insightful design information in a flowing and exuberant style of writing that sparks the imagination. I have so many great ideas for my wooded yard garnered from this book. Where I would have cut down trees, I clearly see gloriously shaded possibilities. And Mr. Mandell's photographs are so beautiful. You will love this book.

Well-researched synthesis.......2006-03-24
This is a particularly well-researched and comprehensive examination of opposition to dancing, especially by religious leaders and theologians, since before the Puritans. My background is in Renaissance dance, so I can't attest to the book's accuracy regarding the later periods, but the initial chapters on early antidance views are excellent. Sometimes Wagner fails to distinguish between Puritan and more mainstream Protestant reformers, but otherwise she provides an impressively thorough overview of antidance treatises and their arguments. This book is also pioneering in its scope; it examines common themes shared by antidance writers over four centuries and on two continents, and demonstrates how many later dance opponents borrowed heavily from their antidance predecessors.
what every dancer should know.......2003-12-20
Despite what another reviewer said, this book is not about
a woman and her dog. It tells who the people are who
are against dancing. It documents how fiercely opposed they
were up to the early part of the 20th century, but unfortunately
says little about later in the 20th century. I suspect the
reviewer who said it was about a woman and her dog did not
want you to read the book. Perhaps the reviewer was one of
the people the book is about.

I found this book quite profound, yet mysterious and confusing. Perhaps my knowledge of classical dance is a bit outdated, but I was in Cats. I would have liked more pictures. Despite all of these things I was enlightened by this cryptic tale of a woman and her dog.
