Book Description
This ground-breaking book by international experts on all aspects of food production, farming and animal welfare shows that there is an alternative to intensive farming of animals or genetic engineering in order to feed the world. The alternative, which is healthier for humans and kinder to animals, involves not devoting enormous resources to the production of meat, subjecting animals to often appalling treatment and creating both unfair food distribution and a poor diet. The contributions challenge the entire system of agriculture and the food market, asserting that animal welfare, human welfare, and the welfare of the planet go hand in hand.

Not worth a second look.......2002-11-21
I am usually very conservative about giving very high or very low ratings, but this book surely deserves it more than anything else I've read. I got this book thinking that it would be a lovely introduction to some reasonable explanations for becoming vegetarian. Boy, was I wrong. Supposedly, this book gives the two sides of the vegetarian debate (i.e. hippies and meat industry moguls) a chance to meet and talk about the differing reasons they believe they are right. It is a wonderful idea which loses everything in the execution. In the entire first half of the book (whose second half I declined to read) there were all of two footnotes. Not a single claim of either side's evidence had any substantial (read, non-partial) support. This book is aimed at idiots who cannot tell the difference between what other idiots say and a well-thought out argument citing researched statistics. Unfortunately, neither side was up to the task of actually founding their arguments in anything other than propaganda. Naturally, as a result we end up with the most biased and unfounded set of arguments as possible. No wonder so many people steer clear of this argument--with twats such as these authors on either side, I would too (that is, if I didn't already know which side is right).
terrifying account of the dangers of anthropocentrism.......2000-08-10
This is a horribly depressing book for anyone who cares about the future of this planet. In one of the most optimistic essays, it's argued that the world faces 3 choices: grow GM crops en masse, destroy the world's remaining wildlife, or convert the entire population of the US to veganism. It's then pointed out that only 0.2% of American's are currently vegan. Another essay points out, even more terrifyingly, that third world countries are seeking to emaulate western patterns of meat consumption, with all the horrifying consequences this has for their environments and spiritual lives. Other essays provoke a Becketian laughter at the absurdity of the human condition; in one it's pointed out that the US spends more on weight loss products than any other nation does on food. The reasons for this anomaly are pointed out elsewhere; massive subsidies for the agribusiness industry which produce the illusion of "cheap" meat and global trade agreements that prevent countries from introducing animal welfare laws. The only possible cause for optimism is the hope that this book's ideas may be widely dissiminated and cause people to realise the danger that eating meat poses to their own health and to the future of the planet.
Well written multidisciplinary overview.......2000-05-19
This book gives an interesting multidisciplinary overview of the food / environmental / wealth problems we're facing which will probably only exacerbate, and possible solutions -- including a proponent of GenMod crops. No, this book isn't some extremist book stating "let's all become vegetarian!" (as the title may suggest), nor does it seriously draw on "sentimental" arguments. I feel this book makes us reflect on the whole issue, leaving us to decide ourselves. Recommended for anyone interested in "why it is necessary to reduce meat consumption" and a good overview anyway for the current state of affairs in this field.

Great Balance of Content and Detail.......2004-07-06
I used this book on a trip a couple of years ago and it was very valuable. The paper is a light grade so while the book is thick it is not heavy. If you are in a town of any decent size then there is info on what to eat, see, and where to stay. The maps are good and suggestions are too. I've read quite a few travel guides over the years and this series may be the best all around and best laid out of any of them. You might want to read more details before you leave but this is the one to carry along on the trip. I have not seen any new editions but I hope Foder's continues with this series.

Customer Reviews:
Truly GREAT for a shotgun approach, but not in depth and misses some stuff.......2006-08-23
This is from the same publisher I've used for several multi-week trips (including Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming). While I usually look at 2 - 4 guide books before or during the trip, this one seems to get used most often while actually driving. I have found it's format very useful. I like it since it let's you see at a glance what sort of things are in a given area of the state and what might be worthwhile going out of the way to visit. Very few of the "highlights" or "must see's" were wrong (well, OK, the Purple Cow restaurant in Montana should NOT rate as a "must see" - that's the only dud I've found).
There are only two significant negatives: it can miss some sites that would be worth seeing and it's not very good on camping information. But how could they possibly cover EVERYHTING in a book this size (for more depth, the "Moon Handbook" series of travel books can't be beat). In other words, they don't always list _all_ the good restaurants, just a couple. They might only mention one or two camping grounds, when there are several nearby that are as good or better... but it's an excellent starting point.
Two minor points: They tend to be a little on the "happy" side in their reviews and sometimes a little more directions (besides the address) are needed since you can't always have _detailed_ maps for every area in the state.
The series tends to be a little more positive than the "Moon Handbook" or "Hidden" guides tend to be. I suspect part of it is that they don't have room to cover the "bad places" to visit, but part is a little more just being nice (i.e., they don't mention the parking is bad or you have to pay separately for drinks).
On the other hand, it does have a couple of good recommendations for contacts / outfitters for outdoor activities related to a given town/area. It also has useful, but brief information on the restaurants, hotels, and attractions.

Colani: The Art of Shaping the Future
ASIN: 2906571962
Release Date: 2000-11-02 |
Book Description
Since the 1950s, designer Luigi Colani has changed the face of our culture with his designs for automobiles, aircraft, motorcycles, furniture, bathroom appliances, cameras and other electronic equipment, computers, and jewelry. Working in Europe, the United States and Japan, Colani has worked with relentless verve to create designs that reflect the genius of the natural world--as he has put it: ''I do no more than imitate the truths revealed to me by nature.'' Educated in both art and engineering, Colani's innovative designs are born from a deep understanding of ergonomics and aerodynamics--of how bodies interact with their environments and with other bodies--but they also resound with a playfulness and beauty often missing in high-tech design. This gorgeous new volume highlights the best of Colani's half-century career in design, including such trendsetters as the Colani Alfa, the Mazda MX-5, the Drop teapot, his headphones for the Sony Walkman, and the Canon T-90, among numerous others.
Customer Reviews:
A disappointing and brief biography of Luigi Colani.......2002-09-12
I had high expectations of the book, as not many books have been written about the inventor of "bio-design". But I was rather disappointed. The first section is a very brief review of Luigi Colani's life, and describes some of his designs. The second half of the book is cobbled together from three interviews done over a number of years. There are no real new insights into the man behind the all the bravado and rhetoric.
The translation into English from the original French was not very well done. There are numerous spelling mistakes and errors. There are black and white photographs in the main text, but many of these are poorly reproduced. The colour photographs at the rear of the book are small and few in number; this is a great pity as Colani is famous for his many flamboyant designs. There are better books about Luigi Colani and his designs than this one.
Customer Reviews:
truly unique design visionary.......2007-03-05
First, if you are a transportation design student/professional/enthusiast, this is a collector's must-have. It's pretty rare, so get your hands on it asap.
Colani is a truly magnificent designer. If you enjoy opening your mind to new ideas and design philosophies, this is a book for you. With projects ranging from helicopters to monorails to city cars, Colani easily demonstrates his discipline for BioDesign. I really cannot describe with words, you just have to see his creations for yourself.

Bullmastiffs Today (Book of the Breed)
ASIN: 087605081X |
Book Description
This all-new book for everyone with an interest in this guard-dog breed is invaluable as a source of guidance and enjoyable study. Topics covered include history and development, living with a Bullmastiff, showing, training, general care and breeding. This is an essential in the library of all Bullmastiff owners and admirers.
Customer Reviews:
Authors' actions speak louder than words.......2006-01-11
I, like the reader's review before me, grew up in the dog show world with sporting breeds being my family's breed of choice. As I became an adult, able to decide on a breed of my own to raise and show, I developed an avid interest in the Bullmastiffs.
Through local channels, I was put in contact with the authors of this book who ultimately sold me the best dog I have ever had the pleasure of owning -- my Bullmastiff (who is six years old now). These authors have done all Bullmastiff fanciers a favor by putting their decades of knowledge about the breed in this book. It covers all aspects of the breed and answers many questions for both novice and expert fanciers.
Having witnessed first-hand the lineage of their breeding program, I can attest to the fact that they practice what they preach. This book has become my "Bullmastiff Bible" throughout my endeavor to build upon a kennel of my own. Highly recommended reading for anyone considering the addition of a Bullmastiff to their family setting.
Incredible Book - Incredible Authors!.......2001-12-24
This book was one of the first ones about this breed that I purchased to do my research. My family has more than 20 years of experience in the world of dogs (showing, breeding, raising and training) but this breed was a new one for me -- and the book was very informative (in my opinion, a "must have" for any prospective Bullmastiff owner). After doing the research, I located the authors and purchased a dog from them. The authors were very personable and their knowledge of breeding for the 'betterment' of the breed is evidenced in their bloodline. I will be purchasing several copies of this book to give out to others down the road who may become part of my own breeding program in the years to come.
If you only buy one book..........2000-10-28
...this is the one to buy. As a first time Bullmastiff owner, I bought multiple books on the breed. This book gives a great historical review of the breed, what to expect, advice on care, training and breeding. It also includes show winners, pedigrees and notable kennels; therefore a great resource for anyone that is going to be involved with the breed. This book is thorough and detailed, and out of all the books I have read on Bullmastiffs, the best and most accurate one based on the day to day life with my Bullmastiff.
Definite show dog book.......2000-05-18
I am awaiting my first bullmastiff pup and I was looking for advice primarily on care and training. In this book, although it did have some good information on care, very little had to do with trainng and day to day life with your bullie. There was extensive information on the development of the breed in Canada, U.S. and Europe which I wasn't particularly interested in. There was also a lot of good info on breeding, which I was also not interested in. If you are a potential "pet" owner, I do not recommend this book very highly
A great source.......2000-05-17
This book is an excellent source of information on the bullmastiff. Through this book did I fall in love with the breed. It has valuable information on what to look for in a breeder as well as the health concerns for the breed. As a first time owner of a bullmastiff, this book allowed me to become more familiar with the background of the breed. There is more information on showing a bullmastiff then I wanted, but this book was especially helpful.

Book Description
Fresh from his award-winning monograph on penstemons, Robert Nold turns his attention to one of the best-loved — and most frequently misunderstood — groups of garden plants. Columbines: Aquilegia, Paraquilegia, and Semiaquilegia is the first gardener's guide to these striking plants in more than half a century; and in his funny, personal, and charming prose, Nold makes sense of the thorniest taxonomic and horticultural questions they present. Sixty-five species of Aquilegia receive detailed examination, with a complete summary of cultivation needs, history, and biology. The author also describes plants of the genera Semiaquilegia and Paraquilegia, cutting through confusion and dissension to create a useful overview of these "columbine cousins." Nold also provides a brief history of hybridization, and practical chapters on propagation and pests and diseases round out the book. In addition to beautiful paintings by the author's wife, celebrated botanical artist Cindy Nelson-Nold, the book also boasts several dozen exquisite photos of columbines in the wild and in gardens.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Aquilegia Guide.......2004-12-09
Both botanical and gardener friendly, this book is every bit as good as Robert Nold's last. Although Paraquilegia and Semiaquilegia are mentioned, this book is mainly on Aquilegia. His coverage of Aquilegia is great as he goes in depth about the history, species, diseases and much more. The chapters on pest, propagation and cultivation are great and speak of his experience with these plants.
So, if you are looking to learn more about these unique plants, this is the book to check out. Nold's descriptions of these plants will definitely make you want to try more of this genus in your garden.
Covers both wild species and garden hybrids.......2004-01-14
Robert Nold's Columbines is the first gardening guide to these plants alone in nearly half a century. Detailed examination of the species accompany biological and cultivation facts in a title which covers both wild species and garden hybrids. Some color plates add excitement and interest.

Planking to Rave Reveiws...........2007-03-29
I really enjoyed this book...different ideas and lots of great ideas to try...well worth the money
Amazing Flavors!!.......2006-03-02
We have been plank cooking salmon for years. The Haugen's book on plank cooking has opened up a new world for us. WE have used recipes from every chapter both on the grill and in the oven and they are all wonderful! The easy to follow instructions and recipes will make it easy for anyone to become an expert at plank cooking!
An introduction to a Pacific Northwest Tradition.......2006-02-28
I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, and have always enjoyed the flavor of salmon cooked over alder. After some friends treated us to alder "planked" salmon on a camping trip, we searched Amazon and discovered this book. We've tried a number of the basic recipes with great success. Perhaps more significantly, those recipes have encouraged me to experiment with a variety of woods for some of my more "traditional" recipes, every time with great success. (For example, spareribs, a Texas-style dry rub, and either an alder or hickory plank make a fantastic taste combination.) The recipes include a wide range of spice and flavor combinations, from simple to what I would call "nouveau cuisine," which should meet most people's taste preferences. And the range of possible combinations, based on wood types, additional spices, or flavors in the soaking process, leaves room for almost limitless experimentation.
We have enjoyed the book so much that we've given it as gifts to several friends. Their responses have also been enthusiastic.
Scott & Tiffany Haugen.......2006-02-18
In response to Cook Kazoo, we were surprised with the harsh review. Several thousand of our books have been sold and this response was the first negative one we or our publisher have received. The recipes in Plank Cooking were all kitchen tested multiple times. We had at least 5 taste-testers per recipe and many of the recipes were cooked by other people prior to being published. There are however, things that can go wrong in plank cooking if instructions are not followed. To insure plank cooking success only use non-treated, non-resinous woods such as alder, cedar, oak, maple, hickory, apple or cherry. There are many great cooking planks on the market today. Planks need to be soaked prior to cooking to not only prolong their life but to impart moisture into the food. Planks on the grill need to be closely monitored to prevent excessive flare ups and to control the amount of smoke desired. Finally, good quality ingredients must be used to produce a high quality meal. If you haven't tried cooking on a plank, give it a try, the possibilities are endless!
Plank Cooking disappointing.......2006-02-12
I purchased this book as a Christmas gift for my husband since plank cooking is a cooking style that we enjoy. We have been disappointed with this book. Each of the recipes that we tried was inedible and some have inconsistencies and inacuuracies in the recipes. I originally decided to purchase the book because I liked the photography and the layout and I can only hope that similar attention to detail will be added to the recipes themselves. We have now relegated this book to a new role as a fire starter.

Great Read.......2007-02-15
I truly loved this book. It represents the history in a way that makes you want to make your own history in herbs. It inspires me.
Book Description
A ghost story with a difference. Savannah, Georgia, from the first days of the Civil War to the present, is the setting for this tale of a most unusual haunting. Luzette, only eleven years old when a stray bullet ended her lifetime, shares with the reader the account of her deathtime. Confined to the house by forces she struggles to understand, Luzette's spirit is at times a warm and welcoming presence and at others a fearsome specter. The changes to the house in which she died, the evolution of the cultural and social mores of the surrounding society, the people who live out their lives in the old house. Contains historically authentic, but possibly offensive, language.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent, a worthwhile read........2006-09-28
I ordered this book in August. Finished it in two days, I couldn't put it down. Luzette is amazing, her story is one of fear, love, loneliness, fear, courage and hope. I wish sometimes that I would have an encounter like the ones described within. Luzette is now one of my all time favorite characters, and this is without a doubt my favorite book.
Essence.......2006-09-19
Essence is a fascinating story about the ghost of a little girl that haunts a house for centuries. The story takes the reader through many time periods, and provides beautiful examples of human emotion and desire through the introduction of many well developed characters. I could not put this book down, it was extremely entertaining.
An Interesting Read..........2006-08-17
The best thing about this story is that I came to care about the main character and it is easy to empathize with her. Using her voice to "speak" to the "writer" or her story was a little cheesy - it did not seem to work well (for me at least). Overall, an interesting read...worthwhile.
Not your typical boo..........2006-07-04
I am always open-minded when it comes to ghosts and this story had a definite different spin. I actually looked at the web site prior to reading the book, so I was delighted that the story could be true. The history and lives of the people made it interesting and a good read. I think some of the stories of the families could be novels themselves. I would have enjoyed the book better if it had allowed me to bond with some of the other characters. Worth reading. I appreciate the author's patience and hope of publication, however his editor left a lot to be desired (misspelled words, missing words, etc. causing distraction from the flow of words).

I loved this book and I am an avid reader of ghosts, hauntings, and the macabre. It is most unusual and delightful and I recommend it highly. I was apprehensive at purchasing it because it is classified as a novel, however, there is a website [...] that shows it could be true.
