Customer Reviews:
A must-read for all AVG Fans!.......2003-01-01
A few years ago (around 96'), I had the luxury and luck to find myself, at the age of 12 to be in contact with Erik Shilling. During that contact, which lasted for several months, he went to the extraordinary lenghth of sending me his book -for free!! Autographed, it is one of my most treasured possessions.
I have read it and re-read it dozens of times since then. It sits on my bookshelf in the good company of General Robert L. Scott's books (The Day I Owned the Sky, God is My Co-Pilot, Runway to the Sun, Flying Tiger: Chennault of China), Gregory "Pappy" Boyington's Baa Baa Black Sheep, and Frank S. Losonsky's Flying Tiger: A Crew Chief's Story, among others.
If you ever have the great oppertunity and luxery of speaking to Erik Shilling, do so. And if you ever come upon his book, do not hesitate in buying it. I promise that you will not regret doing so.
A must for serious fans of the Flying Tigers.......2002-01-15
Mr. Shilling's autobiographical work is a fine insight into the minds of the pilots that made up the Flying Tigers, CAT, Air America, Bird Air and others; men who lived for their profession and loved the experience of the Far East.
The text is written as one who is a true test pilot. The details of each aircraft flown and the events described are especially vivid. The story of the sonic boom is prophetic. Mr. Shilling's style is very believable.
Of the aircraft the Demon is the most intriguing. Very few aircraft historians are familiar with this unusual beast. "Destiny" brings it to life. The reviews of the true capabilities in the P-40 are enlightening to the detractors of this important fighting machine.
Do not miss an opportunity to get this gem!
A must for serious fans of the Flying Tigers.......2002-01-14
Mr. Shilling's autobiographical book is truly a great insight into what made the legendary men of the AVG, CAT, Bird Air and Air America tick. His stories of close calls and unusual people and places are truly worth the search to find this rare gem. He is one of the last unsung heroes from the dark early days of World War II for America left.
The reader will find themselves looking for more books of this genre after it is done. This is also the only place known where a man who knew the ins and outs of possibly the greatest US fighter that is not known to the common aircraft historian, the Curtis-Wright Demon (CW-21), details his "affection" for this strange and wonderful bird (and his time on a cold mountain with one). Mr Shilling also debunks many of the common myths about the P-40 in the early part of the war and reveals it as possibly the best fighting weapon available to either side in the air in the hands of individual pilots with the nerve needed to fly it right. He writes like the test pilot he was.
Pick this one up for a wonderful journey in a strange time.

Customer Reviews:
Pleased so far.......2007-01-22
I bought this book recently (the new edition). I have read through it in planning my upcoming trip. Although I have yet to test the accuracy of the information in person, the book strikes me as practical. First, the book is paperback and fairly slender-- so not too bulky or heavy to actually carry around while you're traveling. The second thing that struck me is that it provides maps, including a metro line map. Although the maps may not be the most user friendly with their small print, they'll do fine for the trip planning stage of the trip (I usually get a good city map for navigation once I arrive to my destination city). The sections seem thorough, with an entire chapter on the history of the city. I was pleased with the day trip chapter as well, which lists many options for day trips, how you can get there, what you can do there, and how long it takes to travel there.
As far as the accuracy issue, I have yet to find a guidebook that is completely accurate. That being the case, I view them as one source of information among many and do not rely exclusively on a single guidebook.
Many inaccurate info.......2005-10-13
I have been reading the last 3 editions of Lonely Planet Madrid and it contains tons of innaccurate information over and over.
As in Spain one can not fine a lot of Australian wines, they draw the conclusion that "Spaniards do not take leaps into the unknown"
It is like everytime they make a new edition the stay 2 days in Madrid and take everything of the last edition, fading Madrid's feeling, culture, way of life and thinking.
Photography is also awful but this is just my opinion.
new guide is better.......2004-12-10
Looking at the dates, it seems like the reader reviews for this book are all for the old guide. The new version just came out, and I think it looks and reads a lot better, so maybe it's time to put up some new reader reviews.
um, i thought the guide was pretty good........2004-07-09
I spent 5 days in Madrid last August and found this book to be a useful guide. it will lead you to a good time in madrid, which consists of going to the museums, a bull fight and eating a lot. also, i recommend going to one of the sherry bars mentioned in the book.
How NOT to do Madrid.......2002-02-27
First and foremost, this book states that the Madrid Metro is "safe". This is not true for foreign males! The central part of the Metro (near the art museums and the city center) is rife with pick-pockets. We caught 1 attempt each day, or first 3 days there. The perpetrators were not, as some claim, "South Americans".
Many restaurants listed are gone. All prices in the book are quoted in pisitas, which is annoying now that everything is in Euros.
The maps are barely useful, being rather too small to read street names easily.
I have enjoyed other Lonley Planet Guides very much, but this one is a real stinker.

Book Description
The digital revolution has brought with it a dizzying multiplication of new styles and techniques in the field of graphic design not to mention a whole new professional jargon. The Designer's Lexicon is the only cross-disciplinary technical dictionary that captures this rich and often confusing profusion of design-speak. It is packed with over 4000 terms that cover the broad spectrum of practices a modern designer must be familiar with: traditional graphics, pre-press, photography, printing, typography, and computers. Four hundred color diagrams and illustrations visually supplement the definitions. With a sturdy concealed spiral binding that reduces wear-and-tear, The Designer's Lexicon exemplifies the criterion designers seek most in a reference book utility. For established professionals navigating new design terrain, as well as students, production managers, and printers, this is an essential dictionary for a new century.
Customer Reviews:
Informative, organized, thorough.......2007-08-16
I haven't referred to this book as much as I thought I would, but it has proven to be a good resource for computer, internet, photography, typography, paper, prepress, printing and finishing/binding information.
This book provides definitions of hundreds of terms and includes illustrations and photos where needed to make a point.
I will hang on to this book for a long time.
Handy day-to-day reference.......2005-09-18
Not only is this the most complete reference for terminology, it is one of the most inventive and best examples of infomation design (similar to the work of Richard Saul Wurmann in its approach to looking up information, but without the maps and graphics). It's cross-referenced to the hilt, and contains explanations even seasoned old-timers will find useful. I'm currently using it as a required text in one of my design courses (graduate-level); my only hope is that it stays current and updated as the field and technology progresses.
An education in itself.......2002-09-02
I have a fairly minimal background in graphic design, except for a two week class I took when I was 12 (I'm 24 now). Other than that, I'm just computer literate and I learn things quickly. This book gave me a wealth of knowledge in an easy to digest form- Running into terms in your Adobe help files that you don't recognize? Get out the lexicon. Talking to a printer and you don't want to sound like an idiot? Get out the lexicon. Everyone from beginners to pros should have this book. The definitions are simple but precise, with examples of the more difficult terms to make them easier to understand. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars.
A definite reference book worth owning!.......2002-08-13
Have you read about the story of a designer who went for an interview with a design company and was not considered because they didn't know terms such as "gutter" or the difference between "seriff" and "sans-seriff".
Sure, many of us should know those terms but if you are an individual who wants to continue to learning these terms that printers or professionals tend to use and you are asking yourself in yourself "what the heck are they talking about?". Sure, no one will blame you if you were nodding off in your graphic design class or didn't really read that chapter on print terminology or just plainly forgotten the terms but the thing is, if you really want that job, don't want to look ignorant in front of certain people or if you don't want to continually badger that professional, printer or broker of terminology, then "the designer's LEXICON" is the book that you will find quite helpful.
The book is broken down to chapters for terms such as:
· Computer Terms
· Internet Terms
· Photography Terms
· Typography Terms
· Prepress Terms
· Paper Terms
· Printing Terms
· Finishing Terms
· General Terms
And to find these words, you are provided with a word finder which helps finding that word in a jiffy.
You know paper but you are asked by a client about satin laid paper, a printer wants you to ad a bleed, a designer asks you about glyphs or asks you about a pica size for print where you usually are working more with pixels, it's important to know these words and it's good to have a book that you can look to and get the definition quickly.
There are a few reference books that I highly recommend which include popular books such as "Artist's & Graphic Designer's Market", "Pantone Guide to Communicating with Color" to name a few, "the designer's LEXICON" is one of those books that is worth owning.
Great reference tool for all in the graphics field.......2001-01-28
A great book for defining all those confusing terms in all the computer and design books. It clearly defines the terms you will come across in the design, layout, pre-press, and printing fields as well as offering many illustrations and diagrams or useful charts further explaining terms.
I looked long and hard to find it and for this price, EVERYONE who works in the field should own it!

A friend raved about this, and she was right!!.......2002-06-22
A friend of mine who raises and shows dogs raved about this book, so I picked it up. It has been very helpful, even though my puppy will not be a show dog, it has helped with my understanding her better.
Outstanding value.......2000-09-12
If you are serious about competition obedience this book should be a required read. It was a great help for me when I started to show my first dog. It points out all the little things that can make the difference between a qualifying and a non-qualifying score. If this book was 5 times more expensive it would still be worth every dime.
A most informative and up-to-date book........1998-02-28
The author does not miss a trick with this book. If you are at all interested in AKC Obedience, whether you already compete or are even considering it, this is THE book to read. Rather than give lengthy training methods for the basics of obedience (any book can do that), Handler specifically covers what and what not to expect from an AKC obedience trial or sanctioned match, and gives wonderful advice on "proofing" your dog for each required excersise. This book is nothing short of a necessity for the AKC obedience competitor.
Good basic book for those new to obedience work.......1997-07-03
I like this book because I am just starting to
get interested in showing my dogs in obedience.
The author covers almost every imaginable topic
including what to wear and what to expect at a
show. I also like that she assumes that the reader is working with a trainer as it encourages the reader to find a good one. The illustrations are very helpful as well.
Book Description
A quick, easy reference that will help you with those last-minute show brush-ups. Successful Obedience Handling, 2nd edition will teach you: *Nine ways to proof your dog's heeling *How to avoid common handler errors *How to select the proper attire and equipment *How to tell if the dog that you have trained is ready

Very Useful Information .......2007-05-07
This book was excellent. It tells you where you will loose your points and how many so you know what to repeat and what to let go in the stressful ring world of comptetive obedience. It was recommended to my by my vet who also shows in obedience during our first shows. Our performance was much improved at the next set of shows.

Isadora Speaks: Writings & Speeches Of Isadora Duncan
ASIN: 0819565601 |
Book Description
This cultural study of modern dance icon Isadora Duncan is the first to place her within the thought, politics and art of her time. Duncan's dancing earned her international fame and influenced generations of American girls and women, yet the romantic myth that surrounds her has left some questions unanswered: What did her audiences see on stage, and how did they respond? What dreams and fears of theirs did she play out? Why, in short, was Duncan's dancing so compelling? First published in 1995 and now back in print, Done into Dance reveals Duncan enmeshed in social and cultural currents of her time -- the moralism of the Progressive Era, the artistic radicalism of prewar Greenwich Village, the xenophobia of the 1920s, her association with feminism and her racial notion of "Americanness."
Customer Reviews:
Examining Isadora's international fame.......2002-12-08
Done Into Dance: Isadora Duncan In America by Ann Daly (Associate Professor of Dance History and Criticism, The University of Texas, Austin) is the exciting story of that legendary American dance icon, Isadora Duncan. Examining Isadora's international fame, as well as her profound and pervasive influence on a rising generation of American women, Done Into Dance links Isadora with the social and historical currents of her era, including her own personal association with feminism, and her racial notion of "Americanness", while striving to answer just what it was about her dancing that captivated so many people. Numerous excerpted sources and black-and-white photographs round out this telling and highly recommended biographical portrait.
