The book quality is really lacking. I'm sure it will have completely fallen apart by the time I return as the book has come apart from the binding with only an hour of use. Lonely Planet, you know how durable these books need to be!!!

for himalaya lovers.......2001-01-21

the book presents a very focussed view for people interested in trekking in the indian region of the himalayas. it gives details of treks along with relevant maps. it is not for those looking for a general tourist guide for the region, but can be used by a variety of trekkers. usually one does not trust the trek details and advice given in such books and this might be very general at times. but it is different in this book. I am myself from one region in the himalayas and some of the facts and details about my region were also interesting and so accurate that this made me like and trust the book.i have also read the previous edition, and the author has built the book across regions. but the information is not very consistent across regions and one can easily make out some gaps for some regions. on the whole a good buy for people interested in specifics.

Almost annoying.

I agree about the fluorescent pages. I was really, really surprised that anyone would actually box large clumps of body copy (which by the way were written by someone who exists on a much higher plane of existence that the rest of us!) in to heavy fluorescent frames, which basically served to give me the worst headache I've had in weeks.

I was relieved though, that there was some redeeming content in the book. I appreciated the attention to various art disciplines, however, I would (as a graphic designer), have appreciated a LITTLE more attention to print projects.

I agree that it is perhaps, mis-titled, as I wonder if it truly represents "design culture," but there is much to inspire, and I found it worth having.

overviews are necessary.......2000-08-26

i like the book because of its overview and mixed / cross polinated approach. I don't think that vernacular design that informs our culture is any more inspiring necessarily to students than a more avant garde approach. Either way, I did find some mainstream design included and yet a lot was on the edge too. I think students, especially will gain from the survey approach here. They do not have enormous opportunities to see whats out there while they are in school and this resources makes a good effort at bringing it to them and the public. The layout is also fine. I do not fault the organization of the pages or thematic titles used throughout. It is a demonstration of cross fertilization in design that is pushing the envelope and thats the message of the book to me. Design is not complacent and not sitting still - it is pushing frontiers and making new relationships between information and communication, materials and process, environmental impact and human life/style, and so much more is happening all around us. I think its a good project.

Design Culture Now is the title for the catalog of the National Design Triennial(an exhibit of the best product,graphic,and architectural design done in the last three years). It's a nice title, but I'm not completely sure how accurate it is. The book contains a lot of nice pictures of designs and some decent writing about it. However I'm left wondering is this what design culture is? My feeling is that this a collection of the best stuff that has been in magazines about design for the last three years or the culture around designers not the designs that influence culture at large. The saddest part about this book is its unrealized potential. The concept is a decent one. Curators from the three fields of design looked far and wide for the best design in the country created in the last three years. They then met and instead of categorizing by building, product, or graphic they devised seven categories that served as umbrella themes in design (fluid, physical, minimal, reclaimed, local, branded, narrative, unbelievable.) The result is interesting. In the FLUID category an iMac is a page away from a rollercoaster in PHYSICAL a redesign of a shopping cart is grouped with a poster where a man has scarred his body to advertise a lecture. The juxtapostions are interesting but do not save the book. Too much of the work resides in the avant-garde, unseen by most people even fellow designers in many cases. A good example is the work of Martin Venezky (in the PHYSICAL category) a designer who alters the characteristics of letterforms by cutting and distorting them, while the work is interesting enough is it a profound influence on design culture? More likely it is work influenced heavily by grungy graphics. Similar things happen throughout the book where novel objects are elevated to undeserved levels. Another flaw is the attribution of design movements or the lack of criticim for being derivitive of the design movements. Hailing Razorfish as the creators of great internet sights is ok but the book makes it seem as if they are responsible for the idea of E-commerce sights, a better solution may have been to list E-commerce as a topic giving credit to the multitude of companies that have had a hand in developing this amazing revoluton in web design. Conversely, the fluid category is filled with iMac knock-offs which is ok but it should have made it clear that these things were obviously influenced by Apple's ID team. The book design also left something to be desired. Ellen Lupton designed the interior(she was also the curator responsible for graphics) and I was thoroughly let down. I am huge fan of her book Design/Writing/Research a monument in design criticism and book design in general. This book however is the polar opposite. The day-glo inks are the most noticeable flaw, giving me headaches while I tried to read the essays. other than that the layouts are just mediocre. It feels like every other design collection you have seen, which is ok but considering her scary talent it could have been much better. Overall I give it three stars, The project had good intentions, It broke traditional categories, included things not traditionally associated with design(roller-coasters, comic books, etc.), and tried to show a cross pollinated view of design. However I hope the next installment equally favors vernacular design along with the avant garde and provides more critical insight into who made the biggest waves and who merely latched on.

I not only like this book, I send it home with all my pups. It has up to date info, great photos and necessary info for new pug owners. I think it is a great book for the basic pet pug owner & because it is reasonably priced I am able to offer it to my customers. Highly recommend!!!!!

If you want to learn about pugs, read this book, and then go out and buy another book about pugs.

"The Essential Pug" is a hodgepodge of little bits of information, most of it not specific to pugs.

The chapter "On Good Behavior" takes a lot of time to tell you basically nothing. But the author of the chapter seems to agree with me that you need to look to other sources: "Find out all you can about your chosen breed first [the book is supposed to be for pug owners], then master rudimentary training and handling skills."

No kidding.

Only a few sections are really about pugs. Other places plugged the name "pug" into pre-existing material. But a lot of places they didn't even bother with that. "...your chosen breed."

Good book, great pictures.......1999-08-18

This book, text-wise, is nearly identical to "The Pug:An owner's guide" by Patterson. It's decent, but nothing spectacular. About half the info is generic to any breed (training, illnesses, etc.) This book, though, has wonderful photos. So adorable! It's also several dollars cheaper. I'd recommend this book over "The Pug", but the book by Phil Magitti is better than both.

Within the late tenth century, Kiev produced enamelled liturgical and some secular objects that adhered to Byzantine traditions. During the course of the 17th century the Kremlin Armoury in Moscow and various northern trading centres emerged as major bases for the manufacture of both liturgical and secular enamels while the key to the programme of westernization initiated by Peter the Great in the early 18th century was the attraction of foreign artisans who brought their own techniques to the new capital of St. Petersburg. The nineteenth century closed with a dichotomy of styles: classicizing, courtly traditions that flourished in St. Petersburg, all of which were demonstrated in the art of the pre-eminent master, Carl Faberge. However, Moscow served as the heart of the Russian revival movement, and it is the vibrantly coloured and exotic-looking revival enamels that are so highly prized by collectors today.

Russia drew from many cultures to develop its own distinctive styles and methods of enamelling; its strategic location on the trade routes between western Europe and Asia, and between Scandinavia and the Byzantine and Islamic Near East was particularly relevant.

The enamels illustrated in this book are from three sources: Henry Walters, the founder of the gallery in Baltimore that bears his family's name, visited St Petersburg and patronized the firm of Carl Faberge in the summer of 1900, while Marjorie Merriweather Post's superb holdings of Russian and French 18th and 19th century decorative arts are housed in the Hillwood Museum in Washington D.C. The third source is a private collector who began exploring the entire range of subjects, styles and technoques of enamelling associated with the Russian revival movement.

This book is great for parents, children, and teachers. It covers butterfly gardening, understanding butterflies, identifying butterflies, and provides a wonderful variety in pictures and information. It is presented in a format that is of interest to all ages. This book needs to go to print again and be widely available. If it doesn't, grab one while you can.

Attract Flying Gems to Your Garden.......2000-06-29

This is a wonderful book, packed with an amazing amount of information, engagingly presented, in its 144 colorfully illustrated pages. The author's fascination with, and immersion in, his subject is apparent, and generates a responding enthusiasm in the reader. Learning that, for instance, high altitude plants tend to be pollinated by birds, not insects, because of the lower temperature and humidity, and because they are less fragrant, may not be needed to make a butterfly garden, but it is a fun snippet of knowledge.

The book can be divided into three major segments: The first two chapters tell us about butterflies (and moths) in literature and lore, as well as nature. The second section (chapter 3) provides brief discussions of over two dozen butterfly species, with an emphasis on food sources for both the caterpillars and adults. The third section is about the plants one can place in one's garden to make it attractive to wild butterflies; not only food sources, but as roosting places. Over 100 plant species are discussed, organized by type (shrubs, trees, annuals) and season. This is followed by a chapter on the general principles of designing a garden for butterflies, with two example garden plans.

A fascinating read for the armchair gardener, no coffee table book yet profusely illustrated, "TheButterfly Garden" is also full of good and specific advice for attracting these beautiful creatures.

A slimy attack on a great poet. This is a disgusting book. I am sure it was only published because of the left-wing domination of the Australian publishing industry. McAuley was a Catholic anti-Communist and the left will never forgive him for this.

Under normal circumstances, one of the minimal requirements for writing a biography is a degree of sympathetic interest in the subject. On this criterion one would wonder why Cassandra Pybus bothered to research and write the story of James McAuley. Apart from a flicker of sympathy for the emotional coldness of his upbringing, this account is almost entirely lacking in empathy or understanding of McAuley's motivation and his strengths.

McAuley had at least three public faces: the poet, the scholar and the political/religious activist. It seems that Pybus has a tin ear for verse and so is unable to convey any sense of his achievements in that area. Instead she mines his poetry for symptoms of sexual, religious and political hangups. Religion has traditionally been a vehicle for the highest spiritual aspirations, but she is apparently tone deaf to this area of human experience as well.

The English historian and philosopher R G Collingwood deplored the decline of religion and the rise of the "Prussian philosophy" of political bullying. Obsessed with the rise of dictatorships in the 1930s he felt that democratic principles had lost the 'punch' that religious faith had once imparted to them. This amounts to a repetition of the mournful commentary by Yeats in his poem "The Second Coming":

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world...
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity...

This was the situation confronted by McAuley when he turned from the romanticism and anarchism of youth to Catholicism and political engagement in the 1950s. It is the domain of politics where Pybus is most at home. Reporting on an address by McAuley at the University of Sydney she writes "It was not the poet I went to hear all those years ago. Then, as now, it was the political ideologist and cold war warrior who compelled my attention". Unfortunately her attention must have wandered, or maybe he said things she did not want to hear because she went on "I don't remember what it was he said".

Of course it is unreasonable to demand that McAuley's biographer should be a poet with religious sensibilities, however an academic historian should provide something more than a journalistic account of the work of Santamaria, Krygier and others who opposed communist influence in the trade unions, the Labor Party and the universities. Pybus provides no historical perspective on these activities. A younger generation of readers may need to be reminded that there was a cold war, sometimes more than cold, as in Korea, Malaya, Vietnam and other insurgencies, not to mention Hungary. During that time a hostile totalitarian power threatened peace and security all over the world, with its agents in the west, including Australia, being funded and directed from Moscow. Due to the treason of the intellectuals, who as Pybus pointed out, mostly supported the other side, those who did not, such as McAuley were called all manner of names.

McAuley was the first editor of the Austrlian quarterly named Quadrant, the Australian arm of the worldwide anti-communist Association for Cultural Freedom. The magazine first appeared at the time that Hungarian refugees started to turn up in the West after escaping from Russian tanks in the streets of their home town. Many Australian communist left the party at that point, though the realities should have been apparent to well informed people from the 1930s, from Koestler's Darkness at Noon, from George Orwell's journalism and from the local waterside workers disruption of the allied war effort during the Hitler-Stalin pact.

It appears that Cassandra Pybus has missed the moral point of the anti-communist stand of the Quadrant supporters. They were a small part of the worldwide intellectual resistance to an aggressive dictatorship. As for the CIA funding to Quadrant which provided so much delight to Stalin's "useful idiots", it is unfortunate that Quadrant could not raise more funds locally but nobody has suggested the writers took their orders from overseas in the way that the communists did.

The outcome of the cold war remained in doubt until well after McAuley's death. The stakes were high and this no doubt contributed to the sense of urgency and impatience on the part of the McAuley and others, especially in the face of indifference or obstruction by people who should have known better. The final collapse of the Soviet empire surely revealed to the most empty-headed Vietnam Moratorium marcher that there was something rotten behind the Iron Curtain.

Pybus merely notes that McAuley was on the losing side in the 1970s. It should be added that this was mostly because the leadership in Australia and the US destroyed their moral credibility by introducing conscription for the Vietnam war. This was hardly McAuley's fault because he was a not a rightwinger of the coercive kind. He probably would have endorsed Hayek's statement "Why I am not a conservative" (Postscript to The Constitution of Liberty). A real conservative such as Malcolm Fraser (Prime Minister during the 1970s) showed his true colours when, in addition to supporting conscription and retrospective taxation, he cut back funding to Quadrant and raised the tariff barriers to impede free trade. A google search McAuley + Rathouse will turn up some helpful essays to illuminate his role in the poetry and politics of his time.

Defects in the research in this book have been documented by other reviewers who were closer to the action than myself. The embarrassing gesture towards homoeroticism as a spring of McAuley's motivation has been rubbished by commentators across the ideological spectrum.

Almost 100,000 dollars of public money went into this project and what is one to make of the expensive white elephant that has come off the press? As a taxpayer who unwittingly contributed to the funding I would like to ask for my money back. However if Cassandra Pybus is prepared to make the trip I would be willing to support research in the Moscow archives to document the flow of Soviet funds to the communist party in Australia and to fellow-travelling writers.
